World Health Day

World Health Day is celebrated every year on 7 April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 1948, the World Health Organization held the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate 7 April 

of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day. 

The World Health Day is celebrated to create “awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern 

for the World Health Organization (WHO)”. Activities – related to that particular theme and the resources provided.

make cities healthier

World Health Day 2010 will focus on urbanization and health. 

With the campaign "1000 cities - 1000 lives", events will be organized worldwide calling on cities to open up streets for health activities. 

The campaign aims at many states organizing a one day event on sports and health related issue in the week of April 7 to 11, 2010. 

The event aims in promoting the health related policies and to make the politicians and stakeholders take into account the long term and short term effect of urban policies on the health of the citizen. 

World Health Day 2009:Save lives, Make Hospitals Safe in Emergencies

World Health Day 2009 focused on the safety of health facilities and the readiness of health workers who treat those affected by 

emergencies. Health centers and staff are critical lifelines for vulnerable people in disasters - treating injuries, preventing 

illnesses and caring for people's health needs. 

World Health Day 2008: Protecting health from the adverse effects of

climate change

In 2008, World Health Day focused on the need to protect health from the adverse effects of climate change & establish links between climate change and health and other development 

areas such as environment, food, energy, transport.

The theme “protecting health from climate change” puts health at the centre of the global dialogue about climate change. WHO selected this theme in recognition that climate change is posing 

ever growing threats to global public health security.

WHO and international partners are underscoring 

the importance of investing in health 

infrastructure that can withstand hazards and 

serve people in immediate need. 

0n the day, various local, national and international events are arranged so as to educate the public on the importance of the health issue. 

Conferences are conducted for doctors and health workers on the topic of the year and public talks and shows are arranged around the week to create awareness among the public.

At the school level informational displays 

and exhibitions are organized to educate 

the children about the issue and its impact. Some schools also 

conduct essay writing, painting and quiz 

competition in the World Health week.

 During the week, free and affordable medical checkups 

and medical camps are also organized throughout the world. Talk shows and TV programs are also 

conducted to create awareness and help the people to work towards the fulfillment of the goals.

This all creates a more in depth understanding of the issue and helps to realize the goal through the common man.
