Acceptance of GodThe J2E goal #1 of acceptance of god is where I would surrender my whole life to god;develop a relationship with Jesus Christ; And allow the holy spirit to work in my life. Ithink at the beginning of this semester I had developed in this J2E goal quite well, but Ialso realized that there is always room for improvement. Doing journals like the artifact Iput for this portfolio has helped me realize that there is room for improvement and Ineed to get busy improving. The journals we have done this year have really made methink a lot. Especially this one, where you kind of had to evaluate your self. Evaluatingyour self is a real eye opener; You realize just what condition you are in, weather it bephysical or spiritual. I know that sometimes I back slide in my progress getting to knowthe lord better, and then I do a journal like this and I wake up and see that I am goingbackward not forward! Its like falling asleep on the job and I think the lord knows whento send something like this journal along at the right time to wake us up. I know in thefuture I won’t always being doing eye opener journals, but I still always want to makeprogress getting to know the lord! By doing these journey to excellence goals this yearthe principles are embedded into my brain so that when I am older and out of school Iwill still probably participate in activities that go along with these goals. Which is a goodthing I think. These goals are good principles to live by. I believe they are goodprinciples to have in the home and at school, and doing things like this journal helps toreinforce them into our lives.

Commitment to the ChurchThe journey 2 excellence goal # 2 states that I will have a desire to know, live, andshare the message and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church. With this goal atthe beginning of this semester I think I had this goal under control. Doing activities withthe church and activities with the school this goal was pretty well good. But as I havesaid before there is always room for improvement. Some of the assignments that havehelped me accomplish this goal better would be the Legacy Projects, the journals, andthe song dramas that we have been doing this year and semester. By doing the songdramas and the legacy projects we are actually out in the community and are sharingthe Seventh-day Adventist message. Those assignments are a very good way toaccomplish this Journey to Excellence goal. The journals that we have been doing havehelped reinforce what we have done in the community. The artifact that I used for thisJ2E goal has helped a lot. It is good to discuss your progress and what else you need towork on. That is why I thought this journal would be a good artifact for this J2E goal. Inthe future I don’t think that this goal goal will be to hard for me to master, because Iwill be participating in activities such as VBS and other things that our church and schoolwill be doing. And also in my everyday life with the people I meet, I can share God’sword by my example to them. This goal is one of the easiest for me so I don’t think thatI will have to much trouble incorporating it into my life. I also think that the Lord willempress upon me the right activities that He wants me to do . So with the Lords helpthis goal will be fulfilled.

Interpersonal Relationships

This Journey to Excellence goal tells that I would develop a sense of self-worth, skills in interpersonal relationships, and understanding of the responsibilities of family membership, and the ability to respond with sensitivity to the needs of others. This goal is a little bit harder to do, but I think at the beginning of this semester I was okay with that goal. I think over the semester I have progressed some. Assignments like the retells and the projects where we had to grade other peoples work helped me with this goal. Especially when you are grading somebody else’s work, its hard to do constructive criticism and do it tactfully, because you wouldn’t want to her that persons feelings. And by doing assignments like these you get to practice your skills in that area, and hopefully you get better at is so you won’t her peoples feelings. Also I think it helps you to respect other people’s opinions better, while respectfully disagreeing with them. This is a very important skill to possess, especially when we all get older and have jobs and have to respectfully disagree with people that maybe in a higher position than we are. This is definitely a much needed life skill. The retell assignments that we have been doing this year have enforced this Journey to Excellence goal well. When we did the dramas we all had to agree on one idea and many people would have completely different ideas than everybody else. And when we would journal about somebody’s poem or creative writing we would have to be tactful if we really didn’t like it or whatever we felt about it. I think in the future I won’t have a hard time with this goal in my life, because there is always going to be that person that tries your patience, and pushes your last button but the Lord will always help you when you need Him.

Responsible Citizenship

This Journey to Excellence goal says that I will develop an understanding of cultural and historical heritages, affirm a belief in the dignity and worth of others, and accept responsibility for local, national, and global events. At the beginning of this semester I was okay with this goal, but I believe I have improved a lot over this semester. We have done so many assignments that have helped us with this goal. For example the Gandhi video we watched, and then the paper we wrote about him later. The study of World War II, and the Holocaust museum we went to go see. All of that has developed in me a deep sense of history and what our world had gone through. I still can’t believe the horror of the Holocaust! It was unimaginable the pain that those people suffered through, I only have a very minuet sense of what went on during that time. Another assignment that has helped with this was all of the reading that we did this semester. In the Bible book, and the World History book. And all those vocab articles that we have read and took a test on. Those have made me more aware of the news and what is going on in my world. And our legacy project that has been going on all year long. It has helped me in the sense of community and world responsibility. With all of these assignments that have really made an impact on me I don’t think this J2E goal will be hard for me in the future. I think now at the end of this year this goal is probably the one that I have completed the most. I think this is the goal that I have progressed in this year it may be another goal though.

Healthy Balanced Living

This Journey to Excellence goal states that I will learn to accept personal responsibility for achieving and maintaining optimum physical, mental, and spiritual health. To be honest at the beginning of this semester I don’t think I thought about this goal that much. I believe that I was striving for this goal only I was doing it without realizing it. Because I strive to be physically fit, and I read a lot so my mental capability is enhanced, and devotionals have helped me in my spiritual life. I was striving for this goal without even realizing it. But when we would do assignments like reading Emma I think I started to realize what this goal was all about. Reading Emma was a good mental exercise for me, it was also very enjoyable to. I enjoy reading Jane Austin's books. It tied in well with this J2E goal, and also the journals we would do after reading chapters in the book helped as well. I think reading the World History and Bible books helped as well. They were definitely very interesting to read. As far as the spiritual side of this goal I think by reading the Bible books I moved closer to this goal. For the physical part, although I can’t think of anything we did in World History Humanities, we did a lot of physical activity in Personal Fitness class. In the future I don’t think that I will have to much trouble reaching this goal. I think that it will come naturally because in my daily life I already try to read, workout, study my Bible, and spend time talking to God. I will probably slack of on one of the other, but I am hoping that I can accomplish them all equally. At least I hope I can!

Intellectual Development

This Journey to Excellence goal tells me that I need to adopt a systematic, logical, and Biblically based approach to decision-making and problem-solving when applied to a developing body of knowledge. This J2E goal was probably the one I had the hardest time with. I am not quite sure why but I did. I think the journals that we have done this year have helped me. And also the vocab articles and comprehension quizzes have also helped. The vocab articles that you had us read Mrs. Bacon were challenging, especially the political ones. They made us think and comprehend what was going on in the world. Which is a good thing, but it was a little difficult for me. Sometimes the political stuff confused me a bit and I had to really think about it. But it just helped me develop this goal further so it was okay in the end. And challenges are always good for the mind and body. I think this year has been the most challenging for me, but it has just helped me in the long run. So I guess I am kind of glad about it. I think now I have progressed a lot since the beginning of this semester. And in the future I think that I will progress further with this Journey to Excellence Goal. I am sure that life will always through something like a vocab article or a journal in my way to help me move forward towards the finish line of this goal. Okay maybe it doesn’t have a finish line, but it will help me move forward anyway. I think this goal will be an important skill for my life. I don’t exactly know how yet, but I am sure it will be someday soon, or maybe one day later on in the future.

Communication Skills

The Journey to Excellence goal of Communication Skills says that I need to recognize the importance of effective communication and develop the requisite skills. This is such an important skill for school and life! Many families, coworkers, bosses, and employees have a hard time communicating with each other and that just creates problems so this skill is a wonderful thing to have. At the beginning of this semester I don’t think I was as good as I should’ve been but I was working on it. The assignments that have helped me this semester were the vocab quizzes, because you have to have a good vocabulary to be able to communicate effectively. And also the retell assignments. With the retells you have to make sure everybody in your group knows what to do, when to do it, and make sure they have all of their materials they need. Because it is not very nice if you just IM or email somebody right before class and tell them that you don’t have your script, or your part. That creates a big mess. You need to communicate with them earlier and let them know way ahead of time. That is why this goal is so important. It makes life a lot easier if everybody communicates what and when they need to. We had a lot of retells and vocab quizzes this semester so I think I have progressed a lot from the beginning of the semester. And for the future I see myself progressing even further. Just being in a family helps me with that. And hopefully as time goes by I will learn even better how to communicate with people, so that everybody knows what they are doing. It makes life so much simpler. And I am sure my parents and teachers appreciate it when I communicate with them.

Personal ManagementPersonal management means I need to function responsibly in the everyday world, using Christian principles of stewardship, economy, and personal management. This one is toughie. It was hard for me to chose an artifact for this one, because life in general teaches this Journey to Excellence goal quite well. But I ended up choosing a journal that we did this semester. I think that all of the assignments have helped me with this J2E goal because in the unique schooling that we do here in AE21 you have to be very responsible or else you don’t get your work done. Of course we do have facilitators to help us with that but it is still up to us to do the work and turn it in. So this skill is a MUCH needed one in AE21. If you don’t then you aren’t going to make it in AE21 very long. I think that the journals we have done this year have made us more aware of what is going on in the world. They have helped me progress in this Journey to Excellence goal by not only making us more aware of what is going on in the world, but helping us to understand and learn how to discuss it. When we learn how to discuss it we can see what we need to do as Seventh-day Adventists to help the world and to function how God would want us to in it. I think in the future I will further progress in this skill. I believe that by being actively involved in the church I will learn how to be a better stewardess and how to live using the Christian principles in my daily life. I think when I get a job it will help me in personal management and economy. Because I will be learning how to invest my money.

Aesthetic Appreciation

This Journey to Excellence goal of Aesthetic Appreciation says that I need to develop an appreciation of the beautiful, both in God’s creation and in human expression, while nurturing individual ability in the fine arts. To show how I have progressed in this J2E goal I chose my media journal that we did this year. Another thing that we have done that helped me develop an appreciation for the fine arts was tunnel that we went through in the Capital with all the high school student’s art and the art gallery that we went to in Washington D.C. It was a beautiful art gallery and I did appreciate the art there. I had a really good time looking at all the art pieces and discussing them with my group: Heather, Daniel, and Pastor Reid. It was quite interesting and I am very glad that I got the chance to see it. This media journal helped me to appreciate God’s creation properly. As you notice in today’s world the media displays humans in a very immodest way. I didn’t realize just how they use people (mostly women, but some men) to get people to buy things. It is very sad and disheartening. But I am very glad that I know now a lot more about the media and how they can twist something beautiful that God created into something that man lusts after. This assignment was a very good way to become more aware of what Satan destroys. And what wonderful things God has created. Satan will always try to tempt us to look like and act like what we see, but if we remember this Journey to Excellence goal and ask for God’s strength we can get through temptation and we can make it through without being damaged to much.

Career and ServiceThe Journey to Excellence goal of Career and Service states that I should develop a Christian work ethic with an appreciation for the dignity of service. At the beginning of this semester I think I was good with this J2E goal. I think that I had an appreciation for the people that do service for others. I have always had a deep appreciation for people that do missionary work in other countries and in the United States. The assignments that helped to me make more progress with this goal were the Bible book chapters that we had to read, the legacy line that we had to add to through out the semester, and the legacy project that we have been doing all year long. The legacy project especially helped me with this goal. Us girls at Murphy decided to do a legacy project together. We are sponsoring a child over in Thailand. We did things like a bake sale to raise the money to support her. And it isn’t very much money to sponsor a child yet it provides so much for her. I greatly admire people who go and teach those children about Christ, history, math and reading. I also admire people who start organizations like REACH and ADRA to help countries that aren’t as well developed as other countries. And I admire people who go and help out when disasters like the tsunami strike other nations. I think in the future I will always have a deep admiration for these people. You have to have a burning desire to share Christ with other people. And I admire that greatly. I hope that someday soon I will be able to share Christ with others perhaps as a student missionary, or maybe just in my everyday life. I don’t know what the Lord had planned for my life but I do know that I want to serve Him with all of my heart, and these Journey to Excellence goals have helped me fulfill my dream.
