World Language Newsletter April 2016 World Language Curriculum We integrate the social studies standards and content into Kindergarten—3rd grade Spanish class. In 4th grade, some social studies and other content areas are integrated into Spanish class. All students receive 30 minutes of instruction three times in each six day rotation. Every year your child will learn about a new Spanish- speaking area of the world. In Kindergarten, they will learn about Cuba. In first grade, they will explore Honduras & Central America. In second grade they will learn about Mexico. In third grade, they will focus on Spain. In fourth grade, they will learn about Peru in South America. Units Covered This Month Kindergarten Transportation: types of transportation, how these types of transportation travel (by land, water, and air) Spring: identify symbols of spring through the five senses, spring is 1 of 4 seasons in Wisconsin Introduction to Maps: locate land and water on a map, identify maps symbols and label a compass rose, identify continents and parts of the world address: city, state, country, continent, and locate Wisconsin, the United States, Cuba, and North America on a map First Grade: Maps & Globes: identify and interpret maps & globes, identify 7 continents and 5 oceans, recognize real world pictures and map symbols Homes: climate, location, and availability of materials impact what types of homes people live in, purpose of homes, different types of homes in the U.S. and Honduras Second Grade: Spanish Speaking Women: Frida Kahlo (Mexican artist), Celia Cruz (Cuban salsa singer), Sandra Cisneros (Mexican- American author) Occupations: we need different people to do different jobs, different people enjoy helping the community in different ways Third Grade: World Address: Where do we live? Identify our village, state, country, continent, hemispheres, and planet Urban & Rural Communities: Why do we need communities? Distinguish between urban, rural, and suburban Fourth Grade: Map Review: cardinal and intermediate directions, latitude and longitude, physical features and cultural features History of Peru: timelines and a mini-book focusing on the history of Peru, the Inca culture: their architecture (Machu Picchu), agriculture (corn and potatoes), communication (quechua, chasquis/ messengers), quipus (a way to keep records), and beliefs (Inti, the sun god) Letter Sounds A = ah E = eh I = ee O = oh U = oo Poema del mes: La araña pequeñita subió, subió, subió. World Language Curriculum We integrate the social studies standards and content into

El Plan del Idioma Mundial Integramos los estándares de estudios sociales en la clase de español en

los grados de kinder hasta tercero. En el cuarto grado, algunos estándares

de estudios sociales y otras temas están integrados. Los

estudiantes reciben 30 minutos de instrucción, tres veces en cada

rotación de seis días. Todos los años su niño aprenderá acerca de una nue-

va área hispanohablante en el mundo. En kinder, ellos aprenderán

acerca de Cuba. En el primer grado, ellos explorarán Honduras y

América Central. En el segundo grado, ellos aprenderán acerca de

México. En tercer grado, ellos se centrarán en España. En cuarto grado,

ellos aprenderán acerca de Perú en América del Sur.

Unidades de Este Mes Kínder

Transporte: tipos de transpor te, cómo viajan estos tipos de

transporte (por tierra, agua, y aire)

Primavera: identificar los símbolos de la pr imavera por los 5

sentidos; la primavera es 1 de las 4 estaciones en Wisconsin.

Introducción a los mapas: localizar tier ra y agua en un mapa,

identificar símbolos de mapa y direcciones de la brújula, identificar

continentes y partes de la dirección mundial: ciudad, estado, país,

continente, y localizar Wisconsin, los Estados Unidos, Cuba, y América del

Norte en un mapa

Primer Grado: Mapas y globos: identificar e interpretar mapas & globos, identificar 7

continentes y 5 océanos, reconocer fotos del mundo real y los símbolos en

el mapa

Hogares: el clima, localización, y disponibilidad de mater iales afecta al

tipo de casa en donde las personas viven, los propósitos de hogares,

diferentes tipos de hogares en los Estados Unidos y Honduras

Segundo Grado: Mujeres hispanohablantes: Fr ida Kahlo (ar tista mexicana), Celia Cruz

(cantante cubana de salsa), Sandra Cisneros (autora mexicana-americana)

Ocupaciones: necesitamos personas diferentes para hacer trabajos

diferentes; a las personas diferentes les gusta ayudar la comunidad en

maneras diferentes.

Tercer Grado:

Dirección mundial: ¿Dónde vivimos? Identificar

nuestra ciudad, estado, país, continente, hemisferio, y planeta

Communidades urbanas & rurales: ¿Por qué necesitamos las

comunidades? Distinguir entre urbana, rural y suburbana

Cuarto Grade:

Repaso de los mapas: direcciones cardinales e inter medios,

latitud, longitud, características físicas y características naturales

La historia de Perú: líneas de tiempo y un libro que enfoca en la historia

de Perú, la cultura inca: su arquitectura (Machu Picchu), agricultura (maíz y

de abril. Esta celebración especial incluye

fiestas, juegos, comida, y canciones.
