Chicago, United States From Frank Sinatra’s sophisticated jazz and 1920s prohibition mobsters to Cloud Gate’s seamless steel, Chicago is notorious for its colourful history and present-day wonders alike. ‘The Windy City’, as it is known, rests at America’s epicenter; well connected and brimming with diverse architecture and a vibrant art scene. Catch a Blackhawks game, treat yourself to a cheesy pizza or wander around the family-oriented Lincoln Park Zoo. Until January 3, designers and artists from around the world will attend Chicago Architecture Biennial – a series of exhibitions and installations, which explore the city’s modern architecture and urbanism. chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org

GlobetrotterHere’s what’s hot in travel this month…

Transylvania, RomaniaTransylvania is by far the most romantic and astonishing of Romania’s provinces. Phenomenal mountain peaks, wooded valleys, high-roofed churches and gothic castles are just a few of the wonders that welcome visitors. Horse-drawn carts glide through Saxon villages that glitter with ice and snow. The region is famed for its therapeutic waters and the 14th Century Bran Castle, Dracula’s hilltop fortress, which is majestically perched on a formidable peak. Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, first visited the medieval town in 1998 and has been a regular visitor ever since, restoring a handful of enchanting farmhouses that visitors can rent. transylvaniancastle.com

Äkäslompolo, FinlandFancy a refreshing dip in icy water? It’s not as unpleasant as you may first think, and the Finnish have faith in the benefits of plunging into a frozen lake. Ice-cold water is supposed to keep away sickness, enhance your stress tolerance and improve blood circulation. In Äkäslompolo, a remote village in northern Finland, foolhardy travellers can take the plunge while their cautious companions rent a sauna in Ylläksen Yöpuu. Those willing to drive 40-minutes north can meet Rudolph at the Torassieppi Reindeer Farm. The Northern Lights Safari is highly recommended, which takes you deep into the tranquil Arctic wilderness on reindeer-drawn sleighs. yllaksenyopuu.com; torassieppi.fi

‘Tis the seasonDitch the tinsel, hang up your stocking, wrap up warm and explore these offbeat winter breaks in and around Europe

Faroe IslandsAdrift in the billowing waves of the north Atlantic, this enigmatic 18-island enclave hovers halfway between Iceland and Scotland. For the audacious traveller who’s prepared for ever-changing weather, the forgotten Faroes with their unspoiled moorlands, dramatic fjords and bird-rich cliffs are a walker’s paradise. The destination isn’t on the average traveller’s radar and manages to epitomize mystery, history and modernity. Although intimate and secluded, the islands are chock-full with authentic adventures for all kinds of visitors. Grass-roofed hamlets smothered in snow, spellbinding waterfalls and volcanic shores make this destination an alternative winter wonderland.

Every December, Chile’s skies burst with colour and movement as meteoroids streak across the horizon. This year, the most extraordinary annual meteor shower is expected to peak on either December 13 or 14. Where better to see it than at one of the most remarkable destinations for stargazing: Atacama Desert?

As one of the world’s least light-polluted locations, visitors

enjoy cloudless desert nights. Its remote position between the Pacific and the Andes, in addition to its jagged ravines, far-reaching salt pan and rocky terrain, makes it like no other place on earth.

At their height, the Geminids could produce between 50 – 100 shooting stars every minute, so whether you’re using the naked eye or a telescope, you’ll see thousands of sparkling meteors,

as well as the velvety mist of the Milky Way.

Atacama Desert’s sweeping views, tranquility and silence makes it an authentic travelling experience suited to those keen to venture off the beaten track. Geysers, hot springs, volcano climbs, mountain biking and ancient Incan ruins are just a few of the activities available at one of the driest places on earth. Who’d have thought?

Stay at: Alto Atacama Desert Lodge and SpaLocated in the beautiful Catarpe Valley of the Salt Mountain Range, this resort is inspired by the local architecture and conceived to blend seamlessly into its terracotta-coloured surroundings. It is unlike any other property in the region, with a stable of friendly llamas, alpacas and a delicious choice of local cuisine. altoatacama.com

Winter FunUndiscovered skiing in JapanResting spectacularly on a seeping volcano, Asahidake is the tallest mountain in Hokkaido and a gateway to the unspoiled wilderness of Daisetsuzan – Japan’s largest national park.

Swirling sulphuric smoke and thick, powdery snow make this destination a unique ski experience. Its secluded and unpatrolled backcountry access is heaven on sticks for advanced skiers, thanks to the fluffy terrain and lack of crowds.

Unlike most resorts in Korea, China and Australia that sculpt ice to form their smoothly groomed runs, Asahidake is always soft and ideal for adventurous riders who like to take advantage of the forgiving conditions.

Where to stay: La Vista Daisetsuzan Enveloped by graceful mountains and commanding peaks, this warm and rustic hotel offers guests an exquisite experience. Boasting a variety of indoor and outdoor hot spring baths, with accompanying recliner beds, it truly is a winter wonderland. japan-ryokan.net

Where to eat: When hitting the slopes, skiers have easy access to a Japanese café in the Asahidake ropeway building, which serves traditional cuisine including ramen and rice dishes.

What to do: Asahiyama Zoo Your chance to get up close to some of the world’s most fascinating animals, including seals, penguins and polar bears. The zoo’s unique enclosures feature pop-up perspex tubes and windows to enable close-up viewings.

MY CITY

Paris

Start your day by having a light jog or walk in Parc Monceau. When you enter the park, through the great gold gates, you get a real feel for its rich history. You’ll encounter so many surprises along the way. The statues make you feel like you are in an outdoor museum which is decorated with the most spectacular and grand trees.

If I had only 24 hours to explore the city, I would spend my day walking. This is the best way to discover Paris and to truly get a feel of the historical background of every street in this amazing city. I would start at The Opera, towards Rue de la Paix leading to one of our most popular landmarks, Place Vendome. Then I would walk to Rue de Rivoli, near the breathtaking Jardin

des Tuileries and towards the bustling Place de la Concorde where the Champs-Élysées is situated. Pass in front of the iconic museum, The Grand Palais, and take a left to Avenue Montaigne. At the end, cross the Seine River via one of the most famous bridges in Paris, and the route will lead you directly to the Eiffel Tower.

I would stay at this amazing boutique hotel, nestled in the heart of Paris, called La Maison Favart. This hotel has an incredible history; its rich décor looks as though it’s something out of a movie.

An unforgettable place I’ve visited in the city is Café de la Paix. This famous cafe is a must see! A piece of art, it’s incredibly influential and flavoured by the past. It is a Parisian institution, and a charming enclave for lunch or an afternoon tea.

Fashionistas should head to Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Now, this is the place to shop! A culturally-significant area packed full with new emerging designers, it was

also a hangout for famous intellectuals including Sartre, and Emile Zola.

For peace and quiet, head to Île Saint-Louis. This is my favourite place when I need a rest; ironically right in the heart of Paris. It is in one of the oldest parts of the city; a natural island surrounded by two bridges on both sides of the Seine River. It is such a romantic and beautiful locale.

Don’t miss dining at Maison Blanche. With the panoramic view, this restaurant probably has one of the best views of Paris, overlooking Avenue Montaigne. For me, this rooftop view is simply stunning - it is beyond words.

Most people don’t know this about the city, but The Viaduc des Arts is an understated tourist attraction. It’s an old railway that is no longer in use, but you can visit the splendid Promenade Plantée, and wander around many galleries and shops. You will see many arts and crafts, and get a real insight into French ‘savoir faire’.

Rob Arrow is a product manager at dnata Travel and a self-confessed hotel geek. With nearly a decade of experience in the luxury travel industry, Rob loves nothing more than talking hotels and discovering destinations. His favourite country is Lebanon, his favourite city is Los Angeles and his dream is to own a boutique retreat in the Italian Alps.

Tivoli Gardens during winter, Copenhagen

Ask theEXPERT

Q. We’re looking to start the New Year with a healthy holiday. Can you recommend any great wellness retreats, anywhere in the world, where we can relax while getting fit? A. January is always the month of reflection and New Year’s resolutions, but sometimes we need that extra push.

Fortunately, a number of retreats and resorts have been opening worldwide. Most of these are healthy living resorts in countries where being fit is promoted and embraced.

One of the best is Como Shambhala Estate in Bali. Shambhala means ‘peace’ in Sanskrit. Partake in a variety of different treatments from Ayurveda,

Stress Management or the latest Oriental medicine; in the most luxurious of surroundings. If you want to combine a fun road trip with wellness, there’s the Westlake Village near Los Angeles, which is home to the California Health and Longevity Institute. The best nutritionists, therapists and medics will be available to get you back on track and reach your fitness goals. Adjacent to the clinic is the beautiful Four Seasons Westlake.

If detox is what you are after then Sha Wellness Clinic, about one hour from Alicante in Spain, is the top place to travel to. Here you will have a full assessment before you begin, so the programme is really tailored to your personal needs.

Q. Which cities are the best for kids – with interactive museums and parks, that also have fantastic family-friendly hotels?A. More and more hotels are beginning to recognise the importance of entertaining the younger travellers, in addition to the more seasoned jetsetters.

After all, they are the customers of the future. Taking children on a city holiday is always an adventure in itself, as you need a destination you are confident with so you can focus on keeping the children entertained.

I personally think that, for interactive learning, you can’t beat London. You

have a multitude of interactive museums; from the Science or Natural History Museum to the Tower of London. There are also many more, coupled with an array of fantastic hotels; the majority of which feature extensive children’s programmes.

Rocco Forte Browns hotel is in a fantastic location. If you want to be close to the museums, The Berkeley Hotel also has a fantastic children’s programme, in addition a lovely rooftop pool so you’re able to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Aside from London there is Hong Kong - a fun city in itself! Add on Hong Kong Disneyland and the attractions around Victoria Peak, and here you can have a fantastic long weekend with all the family catered for. Especially if you stay centrally at one of my favourites; Island Shangri- La.

Similarly, Singapore has many fun attractions for the children, coupled with Universal Studios and Sentosa. A long weekend at the St. Regis Singapore with its great approach to kids will leave the whole family fulfilled. One destination that is a little more off the main map, but great for the family is Copenhagen. Here you have the Tivoli Gardens, and of course Denmark is the home of LEGO and LEGOLAND; great parks and friendly people. The recently reopened Hotel D’Angleterre is in a perfect location to explore all this mini capital has to offer.

Yannick Alléno is one of the world’s most celebrated French chefs, whose experiments with

flavours and textures have landed him a number of Michelin

stars. He selects his favourite dishes from around the globe.

Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet, ShanghaiOrder: Chocolate foie gras tartineEach dish has been prepared like a piece of jewellery. I really enjoyed the whole experience at this restaurant. It’s unlike anything else I’ve ever seen or eaten. Each detail is amazingly thorough; absolutely everything is there for a reason. Each dish is delicately cooked with an authentic Asian influence.

Eleven Madison Park, New York Order: Roasted carrots with dates on the top, and sprinkled with wheat berries for added crunchI really loved this dish. It’s simple and gourmand, both at the same time. To be able to take something as simple and natural as carrots, to then turn them into something that tastes completely new is an amazing thing.

Osteria Francescana by Massimo Bottura, ModenaOrder: Five ages of parmigiano reggiano at different temperaturesEating at Osteria Francescana is a real journey through Italy. I am huge fan of Italian food and Massimo cooks his cuisine with a modern twist. I like his work around parmigiano. When you are able to take one ingredient and do so much with it - wow, this is something I love to see.

Astrid & Gaston, LimaOrder: Chilled, raw sardines splashed with a tangy yellow chili sauceThe theme of the menu at Astrid & Gaston changes very often. I like this idea of travelling around Peru and tasting different local cuisine. As soon as you step into this beautiful house, you just know that you are going to leave with an amazing Peruvian experience. My favourite dish may not even be on the menu when you visit!

Narisawa, TokyoOrder: Soup of the soil; bread of the forest; essence of the forest; ash-sean of the seashoreI love the fact that all of these ingredients come from independent farmers and that all the dishes have to be experienced with all the senses. The modernity of this dish is amazing and I love its creativity. When you use the finest and freshest ingredients, you are guaranteed to have amazing results and that’s worth returning for.

Out Of This WorldKameha Grand ZurichDesign-wise there is something incredibly soothing about the majority of the universe: expanses of serenity, mostly monochrome, with an almost minimalist approach (until you encounter the odd galaxy of colour every few million light years, obviously). Humankind has spent an eternity being visually-intrigued by the cosmos, and the Kameha – through the creative telescope of Germand artist Michael Najjar – has taken one giant leap for hospitality with a stunning, truly innovative Space Suite that figuratively puts guests among the stars. Universal artwork, a zero-gravity bed, rocket engine inspired spotlights and other galactic elements achieve elegantly-executed space station chic. Yes, it is a European getaway, but staying in this Spaceous Swiss suite you might just wake up on Europa. kamehagrandzuerich.com/en/space-suite

Anantara The Palm Dubai ResortAt this unique relaxation destination, a Thai approach to spa excellence is in harmony with distinctly Arabian surroundings upon the iconic Palm Jumeirah. Sure, self-healing comes in different doses: for example, retail therapy at Mall of the Emirates is nearby. But our advice here is to stay nestled on-resort, to switch-off from the stresses and strains of life and immerse in serenity. Leave the adventures for a different day – it is time to explore inner peace, and there are few better settings for that. The idyllic beachside resort continues the ambience of calm in its Spa suites, with a menu of experiences such as muscle-melting massages, ancient time-proven therapeutic treatments, invigorating facials, replenishing spa scrubs and Arabian exotic wraps among the treats.

Try this…The ‘Hammam’, a Turkish bath, is a thousand year-old tradition, modernly-perfected here, where it has just opened. Expert therapists are on-hand to deploy the latest innovations in wellness, with a range of wholesome products in their beauty arsenal. Tailored treatments and an immersive foam bath enable your mind to drift-away: go-solo or alternatively experience a dip with friends, family or a loved one, in this opulent setting of heated marble. dubai-palm.anantara.com

Château de ChillonIdly perched on the craggy rocks off Lake Geneva’s banks, this water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. The romantic monument is an architectural jewel, protected by the vigilant and looming Alps. The island on which the castle is built once acted as a stategic barricade to regulate trade between northern and southern Europe. Undoubtedly the prettiest Swiss castle, the site has been occupied since the Bronze Age and dates back to the 12th Century. For many years, Château de Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy.

Jet d’EauLaunched in 1886, this 140m-tall lakeside fountain shoots up water to create a sensational sky-high plume. At any one time, seven tonnes of water is fired into the air, much of which sprays spectators wandering on the nearby pier. Occasionally the structure is illuminated in a misty pink or blue; organised to commemorate a humanitarian occassion. Although it’s Geneva’s third pencil fountain, Jet d’Eau has become a remarkable symbol for Geneva’s residents and is one of the world’s tallest fountains.

All AboardIndia’s mountain railways are a fundamental part of the country’s rich legacy

Kalka-Shimla HimalayanBoard one of India’s narrow gauge trains and clatter through 96km of dense green deodar forests. Over six hours, travellers are submerged in the sweet aroma of apple orchards, pine trees and cultivated terraces. During the winter months, snowy Himalayan mountain peaks feed icy lakes and gushing rivers. The connecting train for Delhi, this Kalka-Shimla Himalayan route, boasting 102 tunnels, is both fanciful and practical.

Nilgiri MountainNowadays, the use of authentic steam trains has gone into decline, however a few whimsical troopers continue to enthusiastically shuffle into the Indian hills. Covering a distance of 46km, the Nilgiri Mountain Rail is one of sheer diversity and breathtaking natural beauty. Swagger through peaceful tea plantations and picturesque rocky terrain. Established in the early 19th Century, this route was often taken by colonial sahibs fleeing the stifling summer heat.

Neral-Matheran HillIndian railways aren’t just a means of transport; they’re a way of life. Opulent former railcars of maharajas have set new standards of comfort and style. The Neral-Matheran route is surrounded by charming local villages and lush valleys; a true getaway. Adventure travellers who love to push boundaries should remember the government ban on riding train roofs - once a stimulating escape from the overcrowded and overheated carriages.

Need To KnowE-Tourist VisasInternational travellers who are visiting India to travel or meet friends and relatives should have at least six months validity from their date of arrival in India. Your passport should have at least two blank pages for stamping by an Immigration Officer. For more details visit indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html

The Raj Palace, JaipurDating back to 1727, Raj Palace is the city’s first royal residence; built by then Indian prime minister, Thakur Mohan Singhji of Chaumoo. A cultural blend of the Mughal and Periodic, crystal chandeliers, priceless antiques and traditional Indian fittings greet guests to this luxurious dwelling. Offering world class facilities and service, it’s a sightseeing destination and grand hotel. DestinationsThe White Stuff

Stay in an alpine lodge San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge, Italy THE MAGIC: What do you picture when you think of a mountain lodge? Fur throws on cow-hide sofas? Smooth pine floorboards? Gingham trimmings, hand-warming fires, views of snowy forest from the cosy side of a casement window? Or tons of tasteful Heidi charm, with underfloor heating? You’ll find them in ski towns throughout the Alps, but if you don’t want strangers whooshing past your front door, look to northern Italy’s San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge; a restored 500-year-old hunting lodge.

Overlooking dramatic Dolomite valleys,

owners Stefano and Giorgia were once big cheeses in Italian fashion (with Escada, Ferretti and Moschino on their CVs), so expect impeccable taste alongside the original beams, family heirlooms and antique doors. What to do? Moonlit snowshoe hikes; wildlife walks… Stefano likes to show off his wood-carving: Giorgia shares local recipes (cheesy gnocchi; speck and spinach dumplings) - or they’ll leave you alone to lounge in the sauna or spruce-panelled parlour.

OR TRY: Make that view one of Scotland’s dramatic mountain range, from the renovated 18th-century Crofts of Cairngorm which sleeps 14. greatnorthlodges.co.uk

Page 57: World Traveller Dec'15

55

December 2015World Traveller

Chug through the snow Golden Ring, Russia THE MAGIC: Winter rail travel can be romantic - especially in Russia. Take a rail tour of the historic towns north of Moscow and you’ll experience golden-age travel, taking you to watch the sun set over Rostov’s frozen lake and Yaroslavl’s icy Volga River.

Mingle with folk embarking on the trans-Siberian on your way through Moscow’s fairy-tale Yaroslavsky Station to board your ride to Rostov Veliky - then off you go, through 200km of frosty forests, snowy-roofed dacha holiday homes and iced-gem-domed buildings. The express services here are a cut above: sleeping carriages have a samovar for hot drinks; seats are like high-backed armchairs; and glasses of tea in ornate silver holders are delivered by liveried staff.

Spend a night in Rostov Veliky, strolling from the lakeside fortress to St Jacob’s monastery. Next night, in Yaroslavl, try the sauna and hot tub at the wooden Alyosha Popovich Dvor Hotel.

OR TRY: Head to half-timbered Wernigerode, three hours by train from Berlin, and steam up the Brocken mountain in wooden carriages, along a narrow-gauge railway. hsb-wr.de

Take the kids to meet SantaSanta Kohlers Lantbruk, Sweden THE MAGIC: Head to the upper reaches of Norway, Finland or Sweden, and it’s practically impossible to avoid him. The easy option is the all-singing theme-park date with Father Christmas (that’ll be Santa Park, in Finland’s Rovaniemi - see santapark.com); but if you want to avoid queuing with numerous other families (a process that has even the most enthralled four-year-old questioning the authenticity of it all), then there’s much to be said for the rustic approach. You need Swedish farmstead Kohlers Lantbruk (kohlerslantbruk.se), which works festive miracles in Gallivare, 240km northwest of Lulea. Here, you’re pulled on a sleigh (by horses, but the effect is still splendid) along snow-swaddled forest trails, where fir trees are thickly coated in white, and hilly silhouettes frame the view, halting at a cabin for sausages, coffee, and meetings with the star of the show. Children enjoy a personal audience with St Nick, the chance to request every present they can think of, and an early gift to tide them over to December 25.

OR TRY: You can also meet Santa in Vuotunki, a hamlet close to Kuusamo in Finland.

Opening image: Sheep in a snowstorm – a bighorn Yellowstone National Park resident, one of a species whose horns alone can weigh up to 14kg.

Clockwise from left: Overlooking 103km of Plan de Corones pistes in a luxury Italian lodge; off the beaten track on a train to the Golden Ring of Russia.

Overleaf, left and right: Ice-Queen sized bed? The glacial, palatial Igloo Hotel in Norway; 120km-high atomic oxygen particles create an awe-inspiring green Aurora.

Page 58: World Traveller Dec'15

56

Sleep in an ice hotel Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, near Alta, NorwayTHE MAGIC: Snuggle up among reindeer skins on a four-poster bed carved from ice, watch your breath form plumes in the air, listen to the ice creak and pop in the snow-muffled night. There are several ice hotels in Europe, Canada and Japan, but it’s at the palatial Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, far above the Arctic Circle in Norway, where you’ll really embrace your inner ice queen.

Is it cold? Sure. Temperatures can dip to a toe-numbing -700C (you’ll need to wear a couple of base layers and a decent down jacket), but sleeping bags suitable for below -300C temperatures are provided, so you will check out with extremities intact. Besides, you can warm up over fireside dinner in a log cabin. One night is enough for most - plenty of time to pose with the elaborate icy sculptures of reindeer-drawn sleds and Vikings, before scuttling down long, blue torch-lit corridors to your comfy cave for the night.

OR TRY: The original Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, invites different artists to craft snowy suites each year - this winter, expect a life-size elephant and a ‘70s-style ‘love capsule’. icehotel.com

See the Northern Lights Thingvellir National Park, Iceland THE MAGIC: The Northern Lights can be fickle and frustrating and there are no guarantees you’ll catch a glimpse. But they can afford to play hard to get. When they do appear, the shape-shifting celestial colours have a seductive pull all their own: see them once and you’ll only want more. They shimmer into Nordic skies as early as August, but they’re at their best between October and March.

Where? You want a trip with lots going on, so the Lights will come as the cherry on top — and also a no-show won’t ruin your holiday. Cue Iceland, with its frozen waterfalls, twisted lava formations and icebergladen glacial lagoons. Watch the

Aurora dance above mountain peaks from your private hot tub at Hotel Grimsborgir, near the Thingvellir National Park, 90 minutes’ drive from the airport and far from Reykjavík’s view-spoiling light pollution. Or go wilder still, with a late-night trip to a remote 380C geothermal spring, where you can lie back and listen to local band Sigur Ros playing on the underwater speakers. By day? Put your plans on ice with a trip to the awesome Gullfoss waterfall — frozen in winter — or into the Glacier, the huge, eerie man-made glacial cave — and Star Wars VII set.

OR TRY: Finnish Lapland may lack the other-planetary scenery, but starry skies and Aurora sightings are more likely.

Looking forward to great grub?Try… Canazei, Italy

How it fits the bill: The Dolomites are where the culinary traditions of Italy, Austria and the local Ladini collide to mouthwatering effect. Expect none of the clichés that clutter the tables further north. Here, you’ll feast on pungent Puzzone cheese, dipped in mustard chutney, orzotto (like risotto, but made from barley) and polenta mixed with local meat and porcini mushrooms.

Canazei is the perfect launchpad for a tour, mixing broad and beautifully groomed pistes, sensational scenery, and - for the money - the best lunching in the Alps. Hit Baita Checco, at Catinaccio, for rich, earthy, mountain flavours; the Rifugio Emillio Comici, above Selva, for seafood from the Adriatic; and Baita Cuz, in Buffaure, for fig ravioli and the weirdest aperitif in the Alps: a Calimero, which mixes the likes of espresso, egg, and cream - it’s both pick-me-up and put-me-down in a single glass. baitachecco.com; rifugiocomici.com

Or try: Courmayeur in Italy is one of Heston Blumenthal’s favourite lunch spots in the Alps, and it’s not hard to see why. Maison Vieille, at the top of the ski area, cranks out a superb spaghetti bottarga (made with fish roe), while Petit Mont Blanc (at the bottom) spit roasts to brilliant effect. Both come served with fantastic views of Mont Blanc. maisonvieille.com; petitmontblanc.com

Fun fact: Although Canazei is bursting with flavour, it’s a very small village with a total population of 1,000 people.

Fancy getting off-piste? Try… Jackson Hole, USA

How it fits the bill: A giant off-piste playground, pointed at the sky, has all the terrain you could ever want from a mountain. Jumps, chutes, open bowls, tight trees, widely spaced trees every turn seems to offer up a new challenge, and there’s a good chance you’ll be skiing it on a pneumatic coating of fresh powder as well. The past five winters have seen a snowfall average of 11.65m on the upper slopes — that’s twice as much as most European resorts get.

How do you ski it? Any way you want. In common with other North American resorts, Jackson Hole protects all its slopes against avalanches, so you need neither guide nor safety gear to tackle it. For the full effect, however, sign up for one of its four-day Steep and Deep camps. The combination of ‘you-can-do-it’ tuition and challenging terrain is going to transform the way you ski. jacksonhole.com

Or try: Val d’Isère in France has everything an off-pister needs — including reliable snow, slopes (both steep and easy), and a small army of superb instructors to help burnish your technique. With slopes that top out at 3,400m, it’s a great late-season destination, too.

Taking the family? Try… Reberty 2000, France

How it fits the bill: When you’ve got young children in tow, the last thing you want is to schlep about all over a resort, delivering your brood to ski school, picking them up again, and then finding somewhere to eat. Which is why Reberty is so brilliant. Squirrelled away at the top of Les Menuires, it’s home to a tight little enclave of chalets, with the ski-school kindergarten on the doorstep and a buzzing restaurant next door for lunch. Better still, several of the chalets are run by British tour operators specialising in childcare, so there are nurseries and kids’ clubs on-site.

Once you’ve unpacked and picked up your ski rentals, you’re unlikely to leave this snug little cocoon, except to click into your skis in the morning, or maybe to ride the (free) bus down to the swimming pool and the soft-play area in the middle of the resort. Just outside, an easy blue piste plugs into the vast Three Valleys network of lifts and pistes so you won’t be compromising on the quality of the skiing, either.

Or try: High-altitude, easy-skiing Obergurgl in Austria has long been a favourite with British families who want to be sure of their snow, whenever they go. Accommodation includes several big, child-friendly hotels and a chalet run by childcare specialist Esprit. espritski.com

Fun fact: Reberty 2000 offers fantastic snow conditions due to its favourable positioning at (yes, you guessed it) 2000m. The location also boasts seven fast, broad and sweeping peaks or passes that tower over 3000m high.

Page 64: World Traveller Dec'15

Going late in the season? Try… Zermatt, Switzerland

How it fits the bill: Europe’s highest run and highest cable car, a convenient glacier on which most of the world’s national ski teams train in summer, 20-odd lifts open right through mid-August. How does it not fit the bill?

It’s true that some of Zermatt’s lower slopes get a bit melty in spring (there’s no shame in riding the lifts down at the end of the day to avoid a slushfest), and that pistes are pretty flat up on top of the glacier. But you’ve got Italy’s equally snow-sure Cervinia lift-linked next door, and even if there wasn’t so much as a centimetre of snow, you could happily spend a week gaping at the awesome Matterhorn that divides the two resorts.

Or try: Winter lasts until the end of April in Canada’s Banff National Park, which makes Lake Louise a canny choice for Easter skiers. The ski area’s small, but regulars love its friendly instructors, ego-boosting pistes and views across an ocean of forest to the cliffs and crags of Mount Temple.

Fun fact: Avoriaz is the snowiest resort in France and sits at 1,800m. It is purpose-built; perched on a sloping shelf that towers over the dramatic plunge of Morzine. Entirely free of wheeled traffic, cars are left just outside the village to avoid chaotic departures.

Planning to party? Try… Ischgl, Austria

How it fits the bill: Yes, yes, Ischgl is very Germanic - walk into Trofana Alm at 5pm on any night and it’s wall-to-wall Bavarians singing ‘Country roads, take me home’ at the tops of their voices. But that’s a good thing because Germans are the friendliest drinkers in Europe. They like an old-fashioned dance, too. What makes Ischgl so much fun is that you can mix a singalong at the Trofana Alm, or clubbing at Pacha, with a boisterous spin, arm-in-arm, on the dance floor at Nikis Stadl – its must-visit reputation the legacy of late, great owner Niki Ganahl.

Ischgl’s intermediate pistes are unsurprisingly, given the nightlife, underused before lunchtime. It’s a joy to ski on a sunny morning when everyone else is still in bed. trofana-alm.com; pacha.at; pizbuin-ischgl.at

Or try: In any week of the season, Mayrhofen in Austria gets animated after dark. But true party animals should target April 4-9, 2016, when the Snowbombing Festival explodes; mixing street parties, woodland concerts, discos in an igloo, and just a little bit of skiing and snowboarding. Additionally, the village is picture postcard pretty, littered with colourful and traditional chalets.

Fun fact: La Plagne in France is the world’s most visited ski resort (2.5 million skiers a year). With an area of 10,000 hectares and 22 piste km, the region is divided into purpose-built villages. Each boasts a selection of quaint eateries, for all your après needs.

First-timers? Try… Alpe d’Huez, France How it fits the bill: It’s easy in a big-name resort for beginners to feel like second-class citizens hidden away on some forgotten patch of flat snow, while the Gore-Tex brigade struts about, telling everybody how many cliffs they jumped before lunchtime. But not in Alpe d’Huez. Here, the nursery slopes spread out on the southern side of town and put first-timers centre stage. You won’t find a bigger stretch of pistes on which to master your turns in either the Alps or the Rockies.

But please, pay attention when you book your accommodation. Alpe d’Huez is a big, sprawling resort, and you don’t want to waste your time clomping around in your ski boots. Target the sector called the Rond Point des Pistes, so that your chalet or hotel will be next to the beginners’ slopes.

Or try: It may start and finish steep, but in its middle section Courchevel is a famously benign place to ski, unfurling the kind of broad, soothing pistes that are perfect for first-timers once they’ve mastered their snowplough turns. To maximise the low-stress effect, book lessons with one of its sympathetic ski schools — and avoid the school holidays if you can; try Ski Total. skitotal.com

Fun fact: Saas-Fee in Switzerland has a lovely little area of nursery slopes, set to one side of the main ski area. Progressing beyond them isn’t straightforward. You’ll need to ride the lift up and down the mountain every day to find the next patch of flat.

Going with a mixed-ability group? Try… Whistler, Canada

How it fits the bill: Endless variety is the name of the game here. Hell-for-leather chutes, smooth pistes, whiteknuckle tree runs and brilliant terrain parks you can ski them all in a single, 1,500m descent, or focus on the kind of slope that suits you best. Either way, you’ll never get bored.

Whistler’s other great strength is its ski school. This is the biggest, buzziest, most highly-rated ski area in North America, and it attracts some of its most motivated instructors. Whether you’re making your first snowplough turns, or want to fine-tune your jumps, you’re all but guaranteed great tuition.

Or try: If you’ve got any skiing stars in your group, they’ll thank you for suggesting Les Arcs, in France. It’s famous for its nice, wide, easy pistes, but at the top of the Paradiski area, which it shares with La Plagne, are some of the most spectacular and hair-raising off-piste descents in the Alps.

Fun fact: Méribel sits in the middle of the vast Three Valleys lift system, packed with wooden and stone chalets; scattered around the magnificant backdrop of the mountains. It’s not short on pistes, with several popular routes for guests to enjoy from peak to pillow.

Booking on a budget? Try… Val Cenis, France

How it fits the bill: Set just south of major-leaguers such as Courchevel and Val d’Isère, the Maurienne Valley is France’s secret stash of low-cost resorts, much-loved by day-tripping Italians, canny Czechs and local Lyonnais.

Val Cenis is the best base offering a come-hither mix of steepish pistes, cheap self-catering accommodation, and reasonable prices on the mountain. But you’ve got to promise yourself you’ll get out and day-trip, too: especially up to tiny Bonneval-sur-Arc. Hidden away at the end of the valley, in a secret kingdom of snow, it’s one of the quietest places to ski in the Alps.

Or try: If you can’t kick the A-list habit, but want to do it on the cheap, then Brides-les-Bains, at the foot of Méribel in the Three Valleys, is a good bet. It is a popular holiday destination and boasts many attractions, including several health spas and ski chalet deals.

Fun fact: Bansko in Bulgaria is a historic, quaint town, set of the flat valley floor of the spectacular Pirin National Park. The central square reveals the town has a serene and charming heart, with fairytale architecture.

Looking for a lesser-known locale? Try… Isola 2000, France

How it fits the bill: Reached in about 90 minutes from Nice, tiny Isola 2000 radiates an agreeable end-of-the-road feel. Tucked at the summit of the southern French Alps, the resort is no ancient hamlet, but it certainly does ‘really-rather-pretty’ - all subtle timber chalets and trad-looking apartment blocks with icicled eaves. What’s more, in sharp spring sunshine those jagged panoramas will have you glued you to your terrace long after breakfast. Of no major interest to international pisteplayers or chi-chi après-skiers, Isola’s dinky 120km of runs (three blacks,11 reds, 21 blues, seven greens) draw a low-key set, as keen to hike, or to bronze in deckchairs and sip hot chocolate to funky music, as to endlessly descend the slopes with a showy wiggle. winter.isola2000.com

Or try: Why stop at one gem when you can have five? All of the pocket-sized areas in Austria’s East Tirol can be accessed with a single lift pass, and as well as a range of scintillating slopes, you get the buzz of skiing a region no-one’s heard of, let alone visited. Obertilliach is the pin-up destination: a huddle of sun-blackened barns and farmhouses, protected as a historic monument, which is home to a tiny but sensational collection of pistes.

Fun fact: Grimentz is often touted as Switzerland’s big secret; a shining example of a village typical in the region. Be sure to check out this cultural jewel.

Want to soak in the spa? Try… Seefeld, Austria

How it fits the bill: How do you like your spa time? Wrapped in hay? Plastered with mud? A his-and-hers chocolate massage, perhaps? Or how about standing for three minutes in a room that’s been chilled to -1100C by liquid nitrogen?

In pretty little Seefeld, set on a snowy plateau near Innsbruck, you can try all of these, and much more. Nearly 30 of its hotels have their own wellness centres, and the town has laid on 2,000sq m of public saunas and treatment rooms for those staying in guesthouses and apartments, too. Meanwhile, between spa treatments, a whole world beckons. Skiers get a modest 37km of pistes, but who cares when there’s so much else: cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and curling on outdoor courts.

Or try: Bad Gastein in Austria, which has been a spa town for centuries and caters to every possible taste - from a Radon gallery at the far end of a 2km cave, to modern pampering in state-of-the-art hotel wellness centres. Don’t get too floppy, though: there are some steep runs to be tackled on the 112km network of local pistes.

Fun fact: Few resorts in the world will pamper you more professionally than the elegant and exclusive St Moritz.

MoscowFinding cold comfort

Russia is synonymous with the cold, from furry ushanka hats to hot drinks in a land where even the matryoshka dolls nestle inside one another to seemingly fend off the cold snap. The architecture is alluring, the streets steeped in history, and as the mercury drops well-below zero there is much to explore in this majestic capital.

Must Do: In Gorky Park after dark, you’ll find illuminated gardens and woodland to witness skate-happy Muscovites criss-crossing the vast network of frozen pathways late into the evening. VDNH goes a step further; a pleasure park with ice sculptures, cafes and a cross-country ski track. Retain the winter-wear and get above ground level by venturing up Sparrow Hills for a 200 metre-high vantage over snow-kissed Moscow. Feeling the chill? Seek respite from the cold on the literary trail to the houses of wordsmiths Dostoyevsky, Chekhov and Mayakovsky, or in one of the cities many diverse museums.

Home from Home: You crave a memorable trip every time you travel, and merely looking at the commanding exterior of the National Hotel makes Moscow feel a historic choice, as does the 19th century-inspired decor. Welcome to the cultural and business centre of ‘the Whitestone’, residing at a hotel that is only 100m away from The Red Square and the Kremlin. The National ‘combines historical ambience with up-to-date convenience and top-notch service with genuine Russian hospitality’. Your 5-star stay begins at dnatatravel.com, or by calling dnata on +971 4 316 666.

Dining Delights: Find the social elite at Café Pushkin while dining like a Tsar; sample widely-heralded Italian cuisine at Piccolino; feast in the eclectic ‘dark shrine’ of Bon, with its Kalashnikov lampshades…

Inside Tip: The UNESCO world heritage site of Novodevichy Convent and Cemetery is the peaceful home to a stunning church, which is doubtless the focal point. Yet tucked behind the convent is the cemetery. You’ll discover hundreds of memorials, crafted to honour influential Russian figures: artists and writers, musicians and dancers, politicians and cosmonauts.

DestinationsWinter Cities

New YorkAn icon on ice

A must-visit destination year-round, the ‘city that never sleeps’ comes into its own once the winter-wind begins to whip through the Empire State.

Must Do: It is the one place where staying firmly on the beaten track is not a cardinal sin: shop-‘til-you-drop on Fifth Avenue (and beyond) while admiring the ‘directed’ holiday window dressings; gaze up in awe at the colossal Rockefeller Center tree with its resplendent Swarovski star.

Home from Home: Standing tall among the skyscraping giants of downtown ‘NYC’, the Grand Hyatt New York ensures you keep your finger on the pulse of this vibrant city: the hotel is mere steps from the Chrysler Building and Grand Central Terminal, with the iconic Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center also in close proximity.

Dining Delights: Café Sabarsky, an elegant, oak-panelled Viennese Café on the Upper East Side serves as the perfect place to warm hands around a cup of creamy hot chocolate. PJ Clarke’s has well-established origins dating back to 1884, where the modern-day in-crowd would slurp oysters and chat over a hearty cheeseburger. After all, this is New York - convention is out the window! Hide from the world and sample rustic American fare at Joseph Leonard, a cosy West Village enclave.

Inside Tip: 2016 marks the 125th anniversary of the New York Botanical Garden, with a timetable of exhibitions lined up throughout the year to commemorate the milestone. This winter? The Holiday Train Show sees model choo-choos chug along half a mile of track past miniature world landmarks – just one of the attractions in this 250-acre Eden.

HelsinkiWhen Hel freezes over

There’s frosted magic from start to Finnish by taking distinctly Scandinavian sojourn, with outdoor adventures on ice juxtaposed with winter-warming bites of indoor dining and laid-back indulgence.

Must Do: Conveniently compact, there is action in every corner of this city; from pulse-racing Kasinonranta beach snowkiting, to crossing the icy sea to rural Seursaari Island. Rent skis at Paloheina Recreational Centre for traversing 200km of capital-encircling trails to your heart’s content, and – once toes begin to tingle – restore warmth to invigorated muscles at the in-demand Kotiharju sauna.

Home from Home: In a prime locale, the luxury Hotel Kämp has long been the choice de jour for royals, heads-of-state, business travellers and tourists alike. This establishment provides five-star elegance

68

Left to right: City skyline panoramas...but don’t forget to look down when Ice Skating at the Wollman Rink in Central Park, New York; the snow-dusted winter streets of Helsinki; Festive markets and a Ferris wheel at Alexanderplatz in Berlin.

BerlinWhere winter brews

The German capital is a city to be explored whilst wrapped in warm layers; ideally wearing robust hiking boots, while strolling hand-in-hand with a loved one.

Must Do: With festive markets galore to explore, visitors need a map just to navigate the 60 seasonal shopping havens. Trinkets range from contemporary and urban themes to the traditional festive fairytale. Give the bank-card a brief break by taking an audacious dip in the outdoor (heated) pool aboard the Badeschiff barge.

Home from Home: Ritz-Carlton occupies a prime address in what is arguably Europe’s most-contemporary urban plaza, The Potsdamer Platz. A district whose character is achieved through a fusion of art, entertainment and shopping, The Platz becomes a Winterworld from early November. The hotel adds to the

architectural awe of the area, and is replete with an array of top-class amenities.

Dining Delights: Banquet your way across a delectable culinary spectrum, from street-food to fine-dining and every morsel in-between. Mutter Hoppe offers hearty Berlin cuisine in the heart of Berlin; Austrian and local delicacies can be sampled at Brechts Restaurant; Brauhaus Lemke at Hackescher Markt, meanwhile, has casks aplenty of homebrewed, hops-infused beverages to rosy the cheeks.

Inside Tip: Year-end is a reflective time, and the Berlin Wall Memorial pays homage to days past, serving as an outdoor information centre where films of the wall’s construction are screened. This is not a history lesson but aesthetic appreciation, as the structure has become a canvas for bright and thought-provoking murals.

and is an ideal retreat after a day of iceberg hunting.

Dining Delights: Short winter days mean long nights brought to life by an array of inviting bars and eateries in this vibrant seaside destination. Jurri, with their sumptuous Finnish twist on tapas comes highly recommended. As does bohemian enclave Bar 9 (the place to be seen) and the bistro brilliance of Rafla. Enjoy blinis alongside divine portions of Finnish freshwater whitefish roe and gravlax.

Inside Tip: Acoustically perfect and architecturally edgy, the glacial Musiikkitalo (Music Centre) offers a rich calendar of Finnish orchestral and Helsinki symphonic performances. These elite concerts often rouse patriotism in the locals, in addition to cultural appreciation among visitors.

Worth the trip then. So what makes this Fairmont special? It’s the fourth Fairmont in the

restaurants and lounges, with the latest jewel being a supreme Friday Bruch at Spectrum – worth the visit in its own right. Savour an enticing array of freshly-prepared international cuisine with vistas of the incredible Gulf: as you’d expect from a hotel billed as “an extended beach of Dubai.”

What else is there to do in Ajman? The emirate is harnessing its natural beauty to entice visitors from all over the world, with plenty of exciting developments. Ajman City Centre Mall has newly opened, and there are cultural trips to take including the Ajman Dhow Yard, Ajman Fort and a National Museum.
