June 2013 Newsletter Vol 5: Issue 12 - World Wide Workshop June 2013 Newsletter

Dear Partners and Friends, It's summer, but we haven't slowed down one bit! Globaloria

classes ended in June with Globey Award Ceremonies in Silicon Valley, Austin and New

York City, and we kicked off Globaloria summer camps across the country. EdSurge and

Education Week named Globaloria a top program to teach kids game design and coding,

and Cisco awarded a new grant to support Globaloria in Silicon Valley. The Games for

Change Festival invited us to speak on a panel in favor of better game-based learning in

schools, at the same time as we called for greater efforts from Obama's ConnectEd Initiative for broadband in

schools. And in the spirit of the Miami educators our staff recently trained in digital learning, we wish you and

the students in your life a summer full of learning outside the classroom. Cheers, Idit

    1. EdSurge Lists Globaloria in Top 40 Tools to Learn Coding

EdSurgeincluded Globaloria in its collection of editors favorite 40 Tools to Learn

Coding, which was published as part of the newEdSurge Guide: Teaching Kids to

Code. The introduction to the guide notes the growing importance of these tools to

our youths future: We are teaching [children] to code... because our world has morphed: so many of the

things we once did with elements such as fire and iron, or tools such as pencil and paper, we can now

wrought in code. We are teaching coding to help our kids craft their future.

    2. Education Week Discusses Globaloria as Leader in Coding Classes for Kids

Education Weekhighlighted Globaloria as a leader in engaging K-12 students in coding

education through game design coursework. The article,Computer Coding Lessons

Expanding for K-12 Students, published in EdWeek.org's Digital Directions, focused on

forward-thinking programs that offer teachers creative ways to introduce students to the

    increasingly essential skills of coding.

    3. Games for Change Invites Idit to Take On Game-Based Learning Trends

World Wide Workshop president Dr. Idit Harel Caperton led a rant panel at the2013 Games for Change

Festivalin New York City on June 17. Idits session,Gamifying Schools and Schoolifying Games: The

Art, The Science, and The Myth, also featured Dr. James Bower of Numedeon, Inc.; Dan White of

Filament Games; and Andrew Gardner of BrainPOP challenging trends in game-based learning that fall

short of improving education and society. In summary of their points, Idit called for a new approach to

game-based learning: Lets use games to change the game of education.Read a summary of their rant

    here.

Elk, a Native American reference in his talk.

    4. Idit Responds to Obama's ConnectEd Initiative with Inspiring Examples

Dr. Idit Harel Caperton took toHuffington Post Techto reflect on President Obamas ConnectEd initiative, which plans to connect more students to high-speed broadband nationally and invest in digital

learning tools, practices, and training in Americas schools. In her blog post,ConnectEd is a

Great New Presidential Initiative, But We Are Already Behind, Idit notes that the program

goals are admirable but that results are needed more quickly than the proposed five-year

    timeline.

Evidence that this is possible can be found in Idits recent Skoll World Forum article,

Mobilizing Underserved Communities to Enter the Digital Economy, in which she presents

innovations like Khan Academy and Globaloria as disruptive digital education programs that

have efficiently overcome challenges of delivery and access by scaling and localizing, tochange learning, not just schools.

    5. World Wide Workshop Trains Education Leaders in Miami

World Wide Workshop Vice President of Programs and Production, Shannon Sullivan, brought best

practices from Globaloria Leadership Training to a broader audience this month. On June 19 and 20,

Shannon spoke to school administrators in Miami about how they can integrate video game design into

core school curriculum. Sharing results-proven strategies for using student enjoyment of video games to

engage them in learning, the session was a joint initiative with Workshop partner, theScholastic Art &

    6. Globaloria Goes to Summer Camp: Students, Alumni & Teachers Run Camps in TX and CA

What's this year's hottest summer camp?Coding camp for kids!As computer programming skills are

becoming more critical in K-12 learning, this trend is taking off--and Globaloria is part of it!

Austin, TX: Laura P., a Globaloria high school student atEast Austin College Prep, led a computing

summer camp, Globaloria and Game Design for Girls, with support of a grant from theAspireIT Middle

School Outreach Program Pilot Fund, a pilot initiative of NCWIT. Twenty middle school girls learned how

to research online, blog, design digital products, and code using Globaloria. Being able to share my

knowledge with middle school girls, who have the same interest in computing as I do, was an amazing

feeling. But being able to see their effort and curiosity in the activities they will perform was an

    unforgettable experience,reflected Laura.

Laura (right) shows a video from Stanford's women-in-tech group, she++, at camp.

Also in Austin, students from all over the region participated in theRound Rock ISDKids Investing in

Careers, Knowledge, and Skills (KICKS) Summer Enrichment Program. Thanks to theSTEM Council at

Skillpoint Alliance, seventy-five students spent four weeks learning essential digital literacy, game design,

and coding skills using Globaloria. The camp was led by Globaloria teachers Angela Walton, Sharon

Simmons, and Laurie Cohen, with assistance from World Wide Workshop interns Valerie Malcomb and

    Lindsey Losh.

San Jose, CA: California students are also staying busy this summer, continuing to hone their STEM

skills with three Globaloria Summer Schools in the San Jose area.Oak Grove School Districtlaunched

their first Globaloria Game Design Summer Camp at Sakamoto Elementary School. Educator, Ashley St.

Lawrence is impressed by the motivation and dedication of her 17 students ranging from 5th to 8th grade,

all of whom are excited to create their own video game. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley also

has Globaloria Summer Camps for the second year at the Smythe and Levin Clubs in San Jose. Both

camps are very popular with students in the local elementary and middle schools.
