Worship at Lake Shore The Sixth Sunday of Easter

The Worship of God May 10, 2015

Youth Sunday Zach Helton

The Scripture Acts 10:34-48

Though youth participate in worship at Lake Shore

year-round, we designate one Sunday a year for the youth to lead worship.

This is a time to remember the place of adolescents in the church and to join

them in the unique way that they worship God.

E aster happens every day. Easter happens each time those who mourn rise up again to honor those they've lost by loving life more dearly. Easter happens every time we stand in solidarity with those who've lost all hope and say, “Hold on, we're at your side.” And Easter happens every time, in spite of woe and death, in spite of the multitude of ways we've turned away, in spite of our failures and denials, we say “yes” to life.

Earthquake in Nepal: Responding as Individuals and as a Church

Bread for the World is urging Congress to renew our

federal government’s major child nutrition programs,

including those for school meals, summer feeding, and

the WIC nutrition program for pregnant and new

mothers, along with their small children.

Every five years, Congress must re-authorize the law

that funds these programs, which have helped millions

of children over the decades. Please send personal

letters or e-mail messages to members of Congress.

Follow these steps for an effective letter:

1. Provide your personal information. This tells your

members of Congress that you are one of the people

they represent.

2. Ask for specific action. For example: “I urge you

to protect child nutrition programs from cuts and

harmful policy changes.”

3. Give reasons for your request. For example:

“My church is already helping by [example], but I also

expect the government to do its part to address hunger

in this country.

4. Send your letter to Congress using the form in

this link: http://www.bread.org/ol/2015/ or stop by

the table in the church hallway.

“Do not withhold good from those to

whom it is due, when it is in your power to

do it." — Proverbs 3:27

Nepal needs our help. Though it isn’t our country that is in shambles, we can respond like it is. Hundreds of charities are responding to the disaster, and deciding where to give money when so many are doing good things can be challenging. The Global Missions Covenant Group has researched relief organizations on charitynavigator.org. These are three we suggest that have a history of working with strong local partners in Nepal prior to the earthquake and who are providing aid for the most urgent needs today:

Charity Water https://www.charitywater.org/blog/nepal-is-in-need/

UNICEF http://www.unicefusa.org/stories/5-ways-unicef-responding-nepal-earthquake/24631

Doctors without Borders http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/country-region/nepal

Once the current emergency needs for water, food, shelter, sanitation, hygiene, and care for the injured are met, your support will help Nepal rebuild sustainable resources. We encourage you to do your own research on these and other sites and contribute toward the basic long-term needs of the people in Nepal. Watch for other ways to respond through Lake Shore in the future. — The Global Missions Covenant Group Rick Allen, submitted this request from a friend of his who has been trying to collect funds for Dhulikhel Hospital in Kathmandu that is taxed beyond its resources. Please contact Rick for more information if you are interested in donating. Here is a link to the hospital website: http://dhulikhelhospital.org/

Youth News

This Sunday is Youth Sunday! Please bring your kids this Wednesday so we can go over the order of worship and assign roles! Also, we’ll be recognizing seniors and the youth that joined us this year, so if your kid falls into one of those categories, please let me know if you won’t be able to join us!

Sunday School time this week will be a time to go over worship and address any last minute questions or issues. If your student is in the service, please plan on bringing them to Sunday School. Thanks!

Next Wednesday, the 13th, is our Dessert Auction for Youth and Children’s Camp! Now this is a live auction, not a silent auction, so come ready to bid aggressively (but peacefully, of course).

The first payment for Passport ($100) will be due to the church office by Wednesday, May 13th! This is also the deadline to request scholarships. Partial scholarships are also available. Remember that Passport will be June 13th-20th. We meet at noon on the 13th to depart and arrive back on noon of the 20th. I believe I sent out a different date earlier this year, please forgive me. That date did not factor in the bus itinerary. The final cost will be $360 this year per camper. If it is any consolation, on June 13th, 2014 in Greensboro, NC, it was 76 degrees. That’s worth at least $200 of that, right?

If you are interested in chaperoning Passport this year, please contact me. I have space for two!

There will be no meeting on Sunday evening after Youth Sunday. Enjoy your time together! —Zach
