Dear Friends, When people ask me if a god created the universe, I tell them that the question makes no sense. Time didn’t exist before the big bang, so there is no time for god to make the universe in…No one created our universe, and no one directs our fate... We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that I am extremely grateful. This quote is from one of the greatest physicists of his generation: Stephen Hawking. His statement, and others like his from the evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins and other scientists, frames the on-going debate between science and faith. Is the gulf between science and faith unbridgeable? Science, it seems, has put many of our religious contemporaries on the defense. In fact, Dawkins once said, “The problem that I have with religion is that it makes otherwise intelligent people say the most stupid things.” Many people of faith are afraid to admit that they believe because it seems that they have to check their intelligence at the door before they can enter a place of worship. Yet, another brilliant scientist, Albert Einstein, wrote near the end of his life: A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, of the manifestations of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute the truly religious attitude. In this sense, and in this alone, I am a deeply religious man. Do you notice the similarity between Hawking and Einstein, in spite of the different conclusions they reach? Hawking speaks of an “extremely grateful” attitude and Einstein of the deep emotion before the “profoundest reason and most radiant beauty” revealed in their study of the universe. What both are saying, it seems to me, is very close to what St. Augustine once wrote over 1600 years ago: “If you understand God, then it’s not God you understand.” Einstein and Hawking thought of God as one who restricts our freedom, a kind of dictator. They couldn’t believe in this “god” and found him unnecessary for understanding the universe. If Augustine is correct, their restricting god, the god they don’t believe in, is just a concept about God, and not God. And, that concept is unnecessary for our lives. I think it’s better to recognize that science begins, as Einstein and Hawking also found, with the wonder and awe that comes from being alive. Faith begins with the same experience. Both begin with a shared belief, the belief that the world is understandable. Both also recognize that any understanding is limited. We always desire to learn more. It’s this “more” that people of faith mean by God. It’s this God-given wonder that draws us to question all that we know. Of course, Christians go further and declare that, in Christ, God has shared himself with us and shown us what reason itself can’t prove, nor ignore once it’s experienced: that God is love and his love for us is unconditional. Faith doesn’t stop us from thinking. Faith encourages us to use our total selves, even our scientific questions, to love and understand the world and the Creator who gave it to us. Love Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

When people ask me if a god created the universe, I tell them that the question makes no sense.

Yet, another brilliant scientist, Albert Einstein, wrote near the end of his life:

A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, of the manifestations of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty – it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute the truly religious attitude.

IN THE CHURCH

MEDITATION

PSALM 93

God acts within every moment

and creates the world with each breath.

He speaks from the center of the universe,

in the silence beyond all thought.

Mightier than the crash of a thunderstorm,

mightier than the roar of the sea,

Is God’s voice silently speaking

in the depths of the listening heart.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

4th Sunday of Lent

“For God so loved the world that he gave his

only Son…” – John 3:16

Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to

us, the gift of His own Son is truly the greatest.

How can we ever thank God for a gift like that?

God does not ask us to sacrifice our own

precious firstborn, but He does ask that we be

generous in making some sacrifices for Him.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS Next meeting will be on

Thursday, March 19th

in the Faith Center!!

Come discuss Sunday’s Gospel!!

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than

others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra

energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you

should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly

appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The

energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot

them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already

been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR 2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select

the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
