Moderator’s Message During the last forty five days, I am sure many DCC members have been touched by Celebra-tions of Life and Godspeed. Alt-hough these times have sad-ness, they also offer compassion and hope. To see our members support and comfort each other, and to organize in such a way that our activities continued - it

was indeed a challenge for many.

The words that come to mind are: generosity, uncon-ditional love, commitment to the congregation, respect, compassion and tenderness of the heart during these times. To see every one work together to accomplish so much - I have been in awe of all the cooperation and working together under such challenging conditions.

During Anton's absence, we thank Bob Hardy and Melissa Tumaneng for a wonderful job in pastoral care. In addition, Bob did a fantastic job working with Alan Kelchner for the Celebration of Life Service for Kristin. Peggy Gierke and Judy Leach were fantas-tic organizers for a beautiful service and recep-tion. Thanks to all the Deacons for their help. Lynda Manstrom was very busy in the front office answering questions and preparing materials. To see everyone work together to accomplish so much - I have been in awe of all the compassion and cooperation under such challenging conditions.

We welcomed Rev. Laura Engelken effective August 1 to help us out with our Children’s and Youth pro-grams. Appreciation to Cathy Anne Hatter and Brit-tany Hatter (Children's Ministries Commissioners) and Alex Hasselbrink and Deb Dailey (Youth Ministries Commissioners) for all their support. Rev. Laura brings a lot of talent and experience to the programs. Prior to Lydia leaving DCC, she was also very helpful in tran-sitioning responsibilities to Rev. Laura. There are al-ready many great things planned for the groups.

The Godspeed and farewell presentations to Lydia Mulkey were especially beautiful and touching. So many people did many extra things to make this a won-derful and memorable event for Lydia. Thanks for Carol Gilliland and Anne Moulds for all their partici-pation and planning. The Children’s Ministries Com-missioners (Cathy Anne and Brittany) were involved in special presentations, Karen Kawaguchi did a photo collage, Trish presented a special Godly Play gift, there were gift cards from the Youth (presented by Syd Dent) and a special letter read by Dave Hill to Lydia, from Anton. Thank you to all the folks that par-ticipated and made this a special day for Lydia.

And during this time of transition, our wonderful choir and gifted musicians participated in the services and provided beautiful music for the congregation. Thank you all for generously sharing your talent during this time.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you Congregation, Council members, Pastors, Deacons and Office Staff for your dedication to Danville Congregational Church.

From the Vision Committee

Last January the congregation approved a commit-tee to review the church’s vision and come up with a new statement. Through February, March and April we collected the opinions of the congregation about what worked, what needed to change and what was important to Danville Congregational Church. Kathy Mitchell presented the findings of that research in May. Following that meeting the Vision Committee met with Kathy over two weekends and synthesized those ideas and themes into a new vision statement for Danville Congregational Church. Below is the re-sult of those efforts.

At Danville Congregational Church we welcome you to a progressive spiritual community that is open and affirming, celebrates differences, and encourages alternate views. We explore the Bible with curiosity and enthusiasm, taking it seriously but not literally. Taking Christ’s call passionately to love our neighbor, we extend our faith into ac-tion for the betterment of all. Wherever you are on life’s journey, we offer you a place of peace and hope.

On August 19, the Council Approved and accepted this vision statement unanimously.

Now what? The commissions and the committees of the church will be looking at ways to incorporate this vision into their work. The Vision Team will be having a second hour sometime in October. In this second hour we will be leading small groups in an

exercise Council went through “Stop, Start, Con-tinue.” As a church and community, to live out this vision, what needs to “stop” or change; what needs to start; and what needs to continue?

The Vision Committee will be meeting periodically over the next months to review how DCC is embrac-ing the statement, recognize accomplishments, and encourage opportunities to incorporate this state-ment of our values.

The Vision Committee: Syd Dent, Anton DeWet, Bette Felton, Joy Grant, Bob Hardy, Dave Hill, Alex Hasselbrink, Trish Moosbrugger, Chris Rauen, Melissa Tumaneng

Associate Pastor Search Committee

The search committee is off to a great start. Drew Nettinga of the NCNC Conference met with the com-mittee to discuss the Pastor Search process. The committee has begun the first important step of the process, which is updating the DCC church profile and developing a job description for the Associate Pastor Position. In late September we will begin holding meetings with the congregation to get input for the Associate Pastor Position. Please watch for the dates of these important meeting, so you can share your perspective on this important position.

If you have questions or comments for the commit-tee, please contact one of the members: Anne Seiler, Bill Armstrong, Bob Hardy, Fiona Klassen, Judy Halden, Laura Beaver, Syd Dent, Carrie Hrousis, Kyra Kennedy (chair)

The DCC handbells will next play on Sunday Octo-ber 5 when the Sister Parish delegation worships with us. Please contact Mary Deauclaire ASAP if you think you might be interested in joining (musicians play for the entire fall season from September 7 through December 14). Rehearsals are on Sunday nights 5:45 - 7:30PM.

Don’t miss Second Hour on September 21 – Mary will share her inspirational experiences from this summer’s National Handbell Seminar in Atlanta, GA.

At the end of July, four members of the DCC Hand-bell Ensemble - Randy Jang, Janis Jang, Lynn Borgueta, and Mary Deauclaire attended the annual Zephyr Point Handbell Conference on Lake Tahoe. Here’s what they said:

Randy – I heard of all the fun and learning that eve-ryone had enjoyed in past years, so I thought to my-self, “Why not?” There was sooo much to learn! I found everyone very helpful and easygoing. I discov-ered that even though much of the music was “over my head,” I was comfortable at a level I could enjoy. Mary prepared me well at DCC. I was familiar with the chimes and mallets and many techniques, and I kept playing a lot more notes than the last time, yea!!

Janis – I remember playing the first night and the 2 composer/conductors, Michael Glasgow and William Kyle, were concerned. We didn’t know how the mu-sic was supposed to sound and apparently THAT WASN’T IT! But by some miracle by the final night the music was beautiful and our audience appreci-ated it. All that in just three days!

Lynn – It was a great honor to play freshly com-posed music conducted by the original composers themselves and then having friendly interactions with them too. One of the conductors assigned me 5 big bells, the biggest bells actually, and me being the smallest among all the ringers was quite a fun chal-lenge. A big thanks to Danville Congregational Church for this great opportunity.

Mary – Some of my favorite things at Zephyr this year: Sitting in silence in the early morning light on the end of the pier, joking around with some “seri-ous” musicians, rocking out playing Katy Perry’s Firework at the concert, feeling the kinship among our own group from DCC, ringing bells, ringing bells, and ringing bells…

Dedication of the New Cross The cross which was hung in the original sanctuary now hangs in Kairos Hall. While Kairos was un-der construction, it was hung, temporarily, in the present sanc-tuary. So many liked seeing it there that Worship commis-sioned another cross to be hung

in its place on the east wall of the sanctuary.

The original cross was commissioned by the Forsyth family, early members of DCC. It was carved by Charles Marshall Sayers, a woodcarver, who had a woodcarving school in Alamo. Worship was pleased to locate his grandson, Kenneth Davis from Mendo-cino, following in the tradition of his grandfather. He was commissioned to carve a matching cross for DCC. Ken tells us he used some of his grandfather’s tools that were used to carve the original cross. Come join us on September 21, with Ken, as we dedicate this beautiful new addition to our sanctuary. A note regarding our music program:

Many of us are still feeling the loss of our beloved music director and friend, Kristin Pankonin. For me, no matter who is playing the piano, her spirit is there to help guide and direct with enthusiasm. We honor her every time we take what Kristin has provided us and use her musical energy to move forward at DCC. To keep on keeping on, in courage and faith as she had exemplified for the last five years, play-ing, directing and bringing out the best is each of us, despite the challenges of her own, is the best contri-bution we can make on her behalf.

In this time of transition, until a new music director is hired, we have been blessed with many wonderfully talented DCC players contributing their inspiring en-ergy in the support of the Sunday services, and we pray that their love and creativity continues to fill our sanctuary and our hearts.

The DCC Council has approved the appointment of a Search Committee to work the process of finding a new Music Director for DCC, one who will lead us into new musical experiences on Sundays and spe-cial services. We will keep you informed as this pro-cess moves along.

In the meantime, Julie Herndon will be back to play along with our DCC players as an anchor for the Sunday services starting on August 24. Julie is a very experienced and professional church musician and we are looking forward to having Julie back to support the music team.

5

I pray with our community as we find ways to heal and support each other in the many transitions and changes that have been experienced. Yet we can also feel good about our new friends, families and long dedicated members wanting to be a part of such a strong and vibrant church with people that care so deeply.

Blessings in peace, Bob Hardy ARE YOU READY TO ROCK? Generational Jam

Do you love music and its role in our life and worship as a community? Join others of all ages and skill levels on the first Sunday of each month before service to learn a musical piece to share during that morning’s

worship. Led by our Children’s Music Director An-gela Schmidt, we’ll gather at 8:45AM to prepare for worship at 9:30AM and add a beautiful dimension to our Family Service each month. Our first Genera-tional Jam session will be Sunday, October 5. For more information, please contact either Pastor Laura [email protected] or Angela Schmidt at [email protected].

Sister Parish Delegation News Delegation dates: September 29 – October 6, 2014

The five Delegates from San Antonio, Quiche, Gua-temala continue their preparations for their trip to Danville, studying about the US and making deci-sions about their itinerary. We’re happy to introduce Carrie Stengel, Executive Director of Sister Parish in Guatemala in this month’s issue of The Good News. To learn about how we are building relation-ship with our Sister Parish visit www.sister-parish.org. or see the video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhxlo1iVT7s

Carrie grew up in South Min-neapolis, Minnesota, sur-rounded by an inspiring com-munity of family, friends and mentors. Shortly after grad-uating from Macalester Col-lege with an International Studies degree, Carrie left for Guatemala to work as a human rights accompanier. Since 2004, Carrie has worked with a number of or-ganizations, planning north-

ern-based education and advocacy and coordinating community-based accompaniment in Guatemala.

Carrie is grateful for the opportunity to work with the dedicated group of people at Sister Parish and to continue building mutually beneficial relationships across borders.

Interested in being a Host Family? Contact Trish Moosbrugger, [email protected] for more information.

A property work day is scheduled for September 6 beginning at 9:30. All volunteers are welcome! The primary focus will be on cleaning out and reorganiz-ing various storage areas on campus including the storage shed in the back of the property. We will be scheduling another work day, probably in November after the leaves have started falling, that will concen-trate on landscape.

The paving of the passenger drop-off zone in front of the sanctuary has been completed. The addition of painted stripes to the new asphalt and ADA warning mats along the curb are being made to meet current Town of Danville requirements.

Shades for Kairos Hall have been selected and or-dered; these will facilitate daytime meetings in the hall. They are the same style as those in the Day-spring classrooms and the hallway outside the music room.

Website Committee Forming

Did you know that 90% of new church members check out the church website before attending? We are in the process of forming a committee to review our current website, and decide on next steps to re-design and/or recreate our site to make it easier to navigate, friendly to visitors, and to take advantage of the latest technologies available. If you are inter-ested in being on this committee, please email Ka-ren Kawaguchi at [email protected].

New Circles are coming soon! New people, new leaders, new Circles names!

Please plan to attend the Circles Sunday event Sunday, September 28, following worship for the “big reveal.” Prior to that date, everyone will receive a letter informing them of the name of their new Cir-cle, and on the 28th when you meet as a group, you will find out who else is in your Circle. This will be a time to get acquainted, to learn who has accepted the jobs of Circle Leader, Sunday Tasks Coordina-tor, and Caring Coordinator, and to begin planning activities of interest for your Circle. Your participation on Circle Sunday is vital. Child care will be provided for children 4 and under; older children are invited to join the circle meetings.

Looking forward to seeing you September 28!

Diane Stein, Circle Committee Chair

Church Family

It is time to send in your recipes for our cook book. We would like a recipe from all our members and friends, young, old, youth and children, male and fe-male. Everyone has something to share, from BBQ sauce to candy, your favorite drink or main dish. You may submit as many recipes as you wish. Please email them to Kim Michaud at: [email protected].

We are accepting the recipes through the month of September and will be compiling the book after that date. If you have any questions call or email Kim or Anne Moulds, [email protected]. Thank you for helping to make this project a big success.

Church Family is hosting a Potluck and Dominos night, Saturday, September 20 at 6PM in Kairos Hall. We will be serving salmon and ask for side dishes and dessert. Bring your own beverage. Please sign up with Cindy Lindstrom or check the bulletin board in Koinonia Hall for a sign-up sheet. We are looking forward to seeing many of you on the 20th!

Save the Date! Walk or Hike Sunday, October 19

This year our Central Contra Costa Church World Service CROP Hunger Walk and SHELTER, Inc.'s Mount Diablo Hike for Shelter share the same date - Sunday, October 19. Make plans to choose one of these great events, get out and make a difference! The CWS/CROP Walk raises funds for Church World Service's food ministry programs (75%) and for our local Winter Nights Shelter (25%) through sponsorship of afternoon walkers (including dogs) on a route in Walnut Creek. Hike for Shelter offers three morning hikes, from an easy stroll to a strenu-ous summit hike, to raise funds and awareness for SHELTER, Inc.'s programs to end homelessness for Contra Costa families and veterans. Go to Shelter-Hike.org for Hike for Shelter information and on-line registration.

On September 6 a groundbreaking ceremony will begin a two to three year Habitat For Humanity pro-ject in Martinez. This project involves the construc-tion of 20 single family homes, which will require, in addition to the “sweat equity” of the future occu-pants, the hard work and financial support of many individuals, organizations and churches. The Out-reach Commission has decided that our congrega-tion is up to the task, so we are initiating involvement with other faith communities to become a Faith Part-ner. Once this project gets underway there will be many opportunities to fulfill our church’s “sweat” commitment (Habitat provides the tools and gives very good, well supervised instructions on the tasks we’ll be asked to do). We are all invited to the Sep-tember 6 Martinez groundbreaking at 10:00 am. The address is 401 Heron Lane, just off Pacheco Ave-nue.

Our first Outreach project for Beyond Emancipation, which provides ser-vices to aged-out foster youth (young adults who are too old to receive finan-cial help through the foster care system, but who are not yet equipped to make it on their own) is nearly complete. During July and August a playroom in a Beyond Emancipation house in Oakland for young women with children, was painted, furniture was provided and installed, and window curtains were provided and installed. About a half dozen members of DCC provided the financial, organizational, and physical contributions necessary to accomplish all these tasks. A shelf sys-tem for books and storage will also be provided as part of this project.

Our Backpack and School Supplies Project was a big success. This congregation provided a total of 43 backpacks filled with supplies (35 for Shelter, Inc. and 8 for Contra Costa Interfaith Housing) plus five packages of supplies for the CCIH Homework Club. Thanks to all of you who helped these children, rang-ing from Pre-K to 12th grade, get a good start to the school year.

Sunday, September 14 Immediately following worship All parents and guardians of our youngest DCC at-tenders (birth – 5th grade) are warmly welcomed to come celebrate the first Godly Play session of the fall season! Join Pastor Laura and Children’s Minis-tries Commissioner Cathy Anne Hatter on the patio immediately following worship for ice cream, sorbet, and fresh berries. We’ll have an opportunity to meet one another and hear about some of the exciting plans for children’s ministries in the coming year! The children will join us after participating in Godly Play. Dayspring Preschool opened its doors in late Au-gust, 2010, thanks to the Vision, generosity, time, talent, and prayers of the DCC congregation. At that time, we had only 24 children enrolled and very high hopes for success! As we begin our fifth school year (!), we have 103 children enrolled, wait lists for all four of our classrooms, and an incredibly talented and loyal staff of teachers. To date, we have pro-vided tuition assistance to fourteen families with fi-nancial need through the Dayspring Scholarship Fund, and we enjoy a very strong reputation in the East Bay community as a high quality preschool. We are all so deeply grateful to DCC for that original Vi-sion that led to this Exceptional Community! We are also grateful for the continuing support of DCC mem-bers and friends who assist with maintenance and repair needs, facility improvements, and Dayspring events. Thank you all for your willingness to lend a hand and share a smile!

Before the 2014-2015 school year began, the entire Hope Center was thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom. The staff worked diligently during their in-service week between the end of Summer Sessions and the beginning of the new school term. Class-rooms have been refreshed with new themes, brightly decorated bulletin boards, new and re-freshed learning materials, and new cubby labels. Child files and computer records have been created for our new families and archived for our families who have moved on to elementary schools. Janice has conducted several staff planning meetings to ensure that our curriculum meets current bench-marks for Kindergarten readiness. There is much to do, and it always gets done with great enthusiasm and teamwork!

The school year began with two Orientation meet-ings on Monday, August 25 (one for preschool fami-lies, one for Pre-K families). Parents learned about Dayspring policies and procedures from Janice in Kairos Hall, while the children were introduced to their new classrooms, teachers, and classmates, and enjoyed a fun activity and craft project. Many weren’t ready to leave when their parents were!

Visit the Dayspring website at www.dayspringpre-school.org for more information!
