EXPERTS

AGREE! Regular

Check-ups are

Recommended

Especially every

100 YEARS!!!

In conjunction with our church's Centennial

milestone next month, St. Andrews is having a check-up! The

Centennial Committee has engaged Komatsu Architecture, Inc.

(yes, our own Karl Komatsu!) to arrange numerous specialists to

conduct on-site evaluations of our buildings, in particular our

church sanctuary. The Komatsu firm calls this "preservation

planning" and we should all agree that, after 100 years, this is a

good time to start! The evaluations will identify both critical and

long-term needs, resulting in an invaluable tool for maintenance

and restoration planning. Also, Komatsu has located a specialist to

clean our exquisite altar just in time for the Church's Big Day!

Karl Komatsu and several of the firm's professionals have

spent countless hours sourcing and coordinating the experts who

will be making the evaluations and many more hours

enthusiastically working with the Committee. The Komatsu firm

graciously has donated this precious time to St. Andrew's and we

are especially grateful for this extraordinary gift.

So expect to see some scaffolding, ladders, and hardhats

around for about two weeks beginning Monday, April 23. Expect

to see that work will not coincide with any of our routine activities.

Expect to witness the purity of our altar once it is cleaned. But most

of all, expect to thank Karl Komatsu for his lovely, lovely gift!

THANK YOU, KARL!!!

Alice Waters, Junior Warden

Jane Bird, Centennial Committee Chairman

Opportunities Abound to Be A Part of The

Centennial

As you can see from the article above, there are many

opportunities to participate in the Centennial Celebration.

While it is expected that many in our midst will be

beneficiaries of the delightful activities, there are also many

opportunities to take part in the events as a “worker bee”.

Jane Bird and the Centennial Committee stand ready to put

you to work.

Other opportunities to take part as an “Executive

Producer” exist. Whether it be a donation designated to cover

part of the cost of one of the events (rentals, food,

transportation, entertainment, fees, etc) or even an entire piece

of the activities, your participation is greatly appreciated.

There obviously will not be another opportunity in our

lifetime to be a part of such a wonderful celebration of our

history and to indeed make some “history” to be remembered

in St Andrew’s future. Any inquiries of how you can help

should be directed to Jane, her committee or the Church staff.

Every year for Easter Day, Saint Andrew’s Church is adorned to the Glory of God with traditional white lilies symbolizing not only “the beauty of holiness” but also the purity of Christ’s righteousness with which, through His Death and Resurrection, we sinners have been clothed. Lilies therefore also symbolize, and express gratitude for, what it means to be “born again” or “born from above” by being baptized into His Risen Life by Grace through Faith, the sweet fragrance of eternity. As an expression of thankfulness for newness of life in Him, the generosity of many parishioners this year was reflected in dozens of lilies given to adorn our one hundred year old stone church as follows:

There is no greater satisfaction than having a satisfied audience. You know the kind that doesn’t want their money back but wants more, more or in some cases doing it again and again. Of course, audiences can vary as can their signs of approval or disapproval. Yes, nothing is more pleasing than a satisfied customer. No boos or rotten tomatoes thrown, just applause, applause, applause, more, more, again, again….encore, encore! Children and pets are the best at innocently sharing their enthusiastic or non-enthusiastic responses. Rarely do I hear “more, more” when a plate of vegetables is placed in front of my grandchildren (maybe a carrot with promises one will grow taller), but anything with sugar is generally a guarantee, a real crowd pleaser, for more, more. “Chocolate, I want chocolate…more, more.” A push on a swing is another pleasurable guarantee for more, “higher, higher, again, again.” Pets have the best way of letting one know when they want more generally with a little nudge of the nose/paw or in some cases a slight “woof, woof” or “meow, meow” which in pet language means, more, more or scratch, scratch…again, again. Novels, films and various stage performances are other venues when one may desire more, more, again, again, as can the consumption of a delicious meal. The Beth Moore Bible Study, James Mercy Triumphs has proven to have been one of those delicious, crowd-pleasing, more, more, again, again moments. The Women of St. Andrew’s cultivated the pearls of wisdom from the Book of James this spring during the Thursday Morning Bible sessions concluding with a desire for more, more. Last week, the women met for a light lunch and further cultivation of each pearl, sharing the luster and varying hues found with the beautiful strand of pearls adorned through the wisdom of James. Some ladies expressed their thoughts writing a journal; some by memory, as one memorized and recited the entire book while others honored James’ legacy by verbally expressing how principles, images or illustrations applied to their lives. James has illustrated what it means to embody the life and wisdom of Jesus. His legacy does not end in the fifth century but

continues with and in us. This is crowd pleasing. This is

satisfaction. This is counting it pure joy!

Applause, applause, more, more!

“As for you, continue in

what you have learned and

firmly believed.”

2 Timothy 3:14

“Dearest James”

The words you say, the way you do, are much to swallow and hard to chew.

At times it’s more than one can bear. But then I know it’s because you care.

A slight glimpse made you wince. Just one look you were convinced.

Just one look, that’s all it took. Just one look inspired this book.

(1Corinthians15:7-10)

Pearls of wisdom that you give, (3:13-18) a little change, how to live.( 1:1)

Be patient and forgive, you teach, (5:7-11; 3:16) words of caution for one’s speech.( 1:19; 3:1-12)

Quick to hear, slow to speak, (1:19) Was it anger I need to tweak? (4:1-3; 4:13-17)

Resist the world, be not proud. (1:17; 3:14; 4:4-10) Do not murder, curse out loud. (4:1; 5:6; 3:10; 5:12)

No is no, yes is yes. (5:12) No false promise. No second-guess!

Let’s stand firm. Let’s be fair (2; 5:4; 3:17) Be most humble with no air. (1:9; 3:13)

Submit to Him, all in prayer. (1:5; 4:7; 5:13-18)

He does rejoice to always hear (5:17) our every fear, our every tear. (5:13)

This I know, it’s very clear His love for us is so dear.

Love your neighbor and the poor, (1:27; 2:5; 2:8; 4:12) while persevering a will to endure.(1:2-3; 1:12; 5:11)

Pray to God, His healing cure. (5:16) He will answer, I am sure. (5:17)

And should one tend to stray, (5:19-20) Please know, reaching out is ok.

The Good News is to share. (Acts 15:13) Show the lost that you care.

The Father of Light will set you right (1:17) granting joy in the morning, joy at night, (1:2-3)

joy in our gloom….temptation has no room! (1:2-18; 4:9-10)

Dearest James, you are the proof, a wanderer who found the truth. (1 Cor. 15:9-10)

Faith in action is a must. (2:14-26) Now I know, James the Just,

counting it joy, in Him we trust.

Faithfully yours

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

The Essentials of Our Faith by Judy Mayo

Special Study This Sunday

The last three weeks we have been looking in Sunday School at the wonderful Easter story, and at a number of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus to His disciples and friends. This has been a fascinating study! This Sunday, we will spend some time looking at some of the key elements of our faith as we look back to review the high points of the Apostles’ Creed, and

as we look at some of Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount. “What, in a nutshell, are the most important teachings of the Christian faith, and what is the biblical definition of a Christian?” We’ll also have a fun, participatory review (by classes) of some of the important things we have covered in class the past few months. One of these exercises is a team quiz, when class members can help one another to score points as we review some of the high points of the past year together. This is not really a “Showdown,” but a “Show Up to Stand Up for Jesus!” Our young preschoolers will look at a few very simple teachings of Jesus from His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5, 6, and 7), with several age-appropriate enrichments planned for them. It promises to be a great Sunday!

Mite Box Offering Report

We had a wonderful mite box ingathering this spring, and it is a joy to report to you that our 2012 Lenten offering totaled $ 4,002.08. This is great news! This week the offering has been delivered to Fr. Javier Loyo, for use in his congregation of Iglesia San Juan Apostol. Fr. Loyo was so very excited and grateful to receive this check showing the love, respect, and good wishes of our congregation for the people of San Juan. San Juan’s members love Fr. Loyo and love their church very much, and they keep it spic and span and beautiful! Recently some of San Juan’s members put a fresh coat of paint on the ceiling of the church, and it looks wonderful. Personally speaking, I have thoroughly enjoyed several leisurely visits with Fr. Loyo during the past month, at San Juan, and now have more respect than ever for the good work which this mission congregation does. Thanks so much to ALL of you (children, youth, and adults) who participated in this offering!

Easter Event at San Juan Apostol

We had a marvelous day this past Saturday at Iglesia San Juan Apostol! Fr. Loyo had advised us to expect a very large crowd, and thus we arrived with 2400 stuffed eggs, 36 loaves of sandwiches, and chips and cookies galore. It was also fun to take along some crafts and games and a couple of large pinãtas. The Lord provided a bright, beautiful day, and the fellowship and fun were touching and very memorable. (I even brushed up on my

Spanish just a little for the occasion). There is a sweet spirit of joy and enthusiasm at San Juan, and the people there are so warm and friendly. Fr. Loyo is the epitome of warmth and friendliness too. Thanks so much to our St. Andrew’s members who supported this event. (I know we were competing with myriads of Saturday soccer and baseball games!) It was a wonderful day from beginning to end. Bravo and countless thanks go to Melissa Pelton for doing the food shopping for this event, and for making hundreds of sandwiches, along with her good friend Colleen Mazurek. Melissa and Colleen also spent many “pockets of time” during the last month stuffing eggs, and Wendy Golden joined in this effort when she had a little free time here and there. Our children also stuffed and decorated eggs in Sunday School. Many thanks also go to Nancy Komatsu and Charlotte Laker who made sandwiches and brought some other supplies for the picnic. Suzanne Gill and Melissa Pelton took great photos of the day, and Susan and B.J. Lewis helped onsite in countless ways.

VBS Team Meeting This Sunday

A lunch meeting for the overall VBS Team will be held this Sunday, April 29, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in the Koslow Library, with a nursery provided. We’ll be going over some final elements of our “game plan” for VBS ’12, and setting goals and work days and nights. Also, you may begin registering for

VBS this Sunday at the VBS table outside Moncrief Hall. Don’t miss “EXPLORING THE DEPTHS OF GOD’S TREASURES” to be held June 25-29 from 9:30 to 12:30 daily. Dive in and get involved!

Sunday School Awards

A Back to School Treat This Year!

Please note that we are doing something brand NEW this year with regard to our exciting Sunday School and Bible Olympics Awards Ceremony. With so much going on with our Centennial Celebration this year, and with several conflicts which were arising with a number of our families in late May this particular year, we have switched our year-end Sunday School Awards Ceremony from the latter part of May to Sunday, August 26, for this year. This may not become a permanent tradition, but after emailing many of our parents, it seemed a good thing simply to TRY for this year. The celebration will take place on the stage in Moncrief Hall, with festive banners and decorations, that Sunday from 11:15 to 12:30, with lunch and all sorts of fun surprises in store. Since we do not ordinarily “promote ahead” in Sunday School until September, it is still authentically an “end of year celebration”… with the excitement of a back-to -school event also. We hope the entire congregation will be present that day to applaud our children! Go on and mark August 26 on your calendars NOW!

Guild of the Christ Child by Maureen Grable

“Is that Jesus?” my sweet two year old asks while eating lunch out one day…and again

“Is that Jesus?” while watching The Masters golf tournament on television…and again

“Is that Jesus?” while we race through the grocery store.

I can not think of a better time to show her who the real Jesus is. The St. Andrew’s nurs-

ery staff and the NEW Guild of the Christ Child have started a new Hands On Bible curricu-

lum. We are so excited for this truly once in a lifetime opportunity to show Jesus to our lit-

tlest members of the church. They are ready and eager to learn.

Our guild is looking for volunteers to teach during the 10:00 church service. The lessons

are sweet and simple. There is very little preparation needed and you should finish just in

time to make it into church to hear the sermon. Please consider this opportunity. If you

would like to share in this opportunity please con-

tact me by email, [email protected].

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds;

tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them

on your foreheads. Teach them to your children,

talking about them when you sit at home and

when you walk along the road, when you lie down

and when you get up.

Deuteronomy 11:18-19

Tuesday, March 27

To all of the precious people of St. Andrew’s:

My heart is full of gratitude and love for each and

every one of you. I always feel the presence of the

Lord when I enter your beautiful church. All of you

are so loving and gracious.

The last time I was with you, I told of a very irksome

event – my purse was stolen. I was fearful of what

could happen to me. The thief had my ID’s. What

about identity theft?

A charming lady said, “You need a God Box!” In

minutes, I had a God Box! It is such a comforting

gift! I immediately put all of my problems and

negative thoughts into the box! Of course, God was

with me.

Sunday, I took the God Box to First Baptist, Dallas,

to show to the members of my Sunday School class.

They were in awe of such a gift. Some were down-

right jealous!

My God Box is by my

bed. I sleep well!

My thoughts and love are

with all of you, dear, dear

ones of St. Andrews’.

Fund Committee meeting at 4:00 PM Koslow Library.

Saturday-Sunday, May 12-13, 2012 Centennial Weekend. Celebration, services, entertainment, music, food and fellowship... You do not want to miss this milestone!

Reunion of Frequent Travelers is still in the mix We just need a date which should be set soon. THANK YOU “GO-GO’S” For the beautiful altar flowers last Sunday. You all are so special! Ed and I are very touched by your thoughtfulness and generosity. The Altar Guild even took pictures for us to share with family and friends. Again our deepest appreciation.

SUGGESTED THOUGHTS

Over the last several weeks two questions were raised. First, “how shall we live the eternal life” that began when a person adopted Jesus Christ as their Savior and made a desire to live the life He set forth? Dallas Willard, in his book the Divine Conspiracy, suggests that the Christian life after salvation can be similar to taking a master class in becoming a disciple or more descriptively, an apprentice of Jesus. What would it be like to have Him as our Teacher. Perhaps we would enroll in His class aware that He knows all there is about each of us, our life, needs and wants. The good news is that we are eligible to enroll in the master class, but we have to sign up for His class, and it may not be not one we might want to pursue. Christians learn early that eternal life begins with confidence that Jesus is who the Bible says He is, the Son of God, the One who enables us to have access to the Holy God. Perhaps we recognize that Jesus is our avenue to the eternal life here and now in this present life, specifically a gospel for our lives NOW, and not for life only after we die. It is about living now as His student, not just as a receiver of His “goodies”, our desires, or even to make us moral or virtuous. Even though these things may happen, our lives are a by-

product of the faith we live and in which we participate. Let us ask this Master Teacher to open our understanding to actually do, as many before us have done, what their acknowledged Teacher has laid out to do. Dallas Willard thinks that individual Christians still hear Jesus say, whoever hears these words of mine and does them is like those intelligent people who build their houses upon solid rock, standing firm against ever pressure of life. (Matthew 7:24-25). It would be so inspiring if our understanding of the Gospel allowed us to answer that second question, “will I”, with “I will.” I will do what the Master Teacher has said. I will follow His instructions. Restoring my heart to be a disciple will involve exercises/practices of behavior, will, thoughts, emotions and social interaction. Let’s take an exercise this week towards becoming a disciple through a lesson in behavior. Make a quiet time in your day. Be quiet in body and soul. Don’t hurry. It is important to slow your body down. Pray through a scripture, for instance, Romans 12:1-2, which helps one to focus on one’s body and mind, to present them to God as a living sacrifice (disciple/apprentice). Another exercise/practice for quiet time could be to read aloud Psalm 23. You might also want to put it in your own words, if this helps you to feel closer to God .

Jesus Calls Us…Outreach and Serving Opportunities A regular column featuring information about St. Andrew’s Outreach and current Serving Opportunities

Do you have a special place in

your heart for “little ones”? St.

Andrew’s Nursery staff and

members of the new Guild of the

Christ Child have started a new

Sunday Hands-On Bible

Curriculum for toddlers that

includes learning about Jesus and

engaging in age appropriate hands-

on activities.

Would you consider serving as a teacher periodically

from 10 until about 10:30 (which allows you to join the

worship service in progress in time for the sermon)?

There is very little preparation needed, and the lessons are

very sweet and simple.

Please contact Maureen Grable at

[email protected] or 817.624.1984 to find out

how you might participate in this new initiative to nurture

our little ones by helping to plant seeds of faith. You will

be blessed!

A NEW SERVING OPPORTUNITY:

Introducing Jesus to our Youngest Parishioners!Introducing Jesus to our Youngest Parishioners!

DEAD-HEADERS Wanted!

Be a Garden Angel for a Day!

As we prepare for our joyful celebration of St. Andrew’s Centennial during the weekend of May 12-13th, we need your help to put the finishing touches on the landscaping surrounding the Church. Mary Lynn and Ed Haines need several people to come out on Monday, May 7th, beginning at 8:30 am, to dead-head our many beautiful rose bushes. (Dead-heading is clipping off the spent blooms.) No special skills required – they will show you how. Please bring your garden gloves and clippers if you have some.

Completing this important task right before our celebration is critical, and several people working together can accomplish it much more quickly. Are you looking forward to celebrating the Centennial, but haven’t found a way to help yet? This is your chance! For more information or if you have questions, please contact Mary Lynn Haines at [email protected]. Then, when you attend the Centennial celebrations coming up, you’ll know that your hands helped to beautify our special place of worship!

Calling A Few (More) Good Men …

as USHERS !

St. Andrew’s has several teams of faithful, friendly

ushers who play a most important role in our Sunday

worship, as well as for other special services. Right

now there are a couple of open spots on teams. With

the current structure, it requires your participation

only about

every 5th or

6th Sunday.

Serving as
