Are you ready for your life to be changed? During the month of October, I want to talk to you about the theme of “Bold.” The book of Acts is one of the amazing chronicles of boldness in the history of mankind. Dozens of miracles occurred. Tongues of fire fell from the heavens. Men could mysteriously understand multiple lan- guages. The church was born. Men courageously stood up to the government and the government backed down. People prayed and God immediately answered. Have you ever wondered why we don’t see the Acts-type miracles in our world, or at least in our country today? I wonder if it is be- cause we do not have the bold faith and bold actions that those people had that led to the bold, spiritual results. Boldness is simply behavior born out of belief because what you believe determines how you behave. If you believe everybody is going to criticize you, you'll behave tentatively. If you believe you're probably going to fail, you're going to venture out cautiously. If though, you believe the One true Lord God is calling you, empowering you, leading you and equipping you, you will live very boldly. Why? Because boldness is behavior born out of belief. Have you ever wanted something so big and so bold that you could barely say it out loud? What would you ask God for if you actually thought He’d provide it? I’m praying that in the month of October we experience miraculous physical healings. I’m praying that mar- riages would be supernaturally mended. Financial breakthroughs would occur. The hardest of hearts would be melted and given over unto salvation. I'm praying with all of my heart that God would take a church of peo- ple that may not be known or characterized by boldness, but God would give us courage, God would give us an outspoken spirit, God would give us the desire to act without fearing - that God would make us bold. We are going to learn how to pray bold prayers, how to speak truth boldly, how to obey God boldly, and we are going to watch as God uses ordinary men and women to do extraordinary things for the Kingdom. We have a choice. We can play it safe or we can seize the life God has in mind for us. What’s it going to be? Come explore what can happen when we become Bold. Are you ready for your life to be changed? During the month of October, I want to talk to you about the theme of “Bold.” The book of Acts is one of the amazing chronicles of boldness in the history of mankind. Dozens of miracles occurred. Tongues of fire fell from the heavens. Men could mysteriously understand multiple lan-guages. The church was born. Men courageously stood up to the government and the government backed down. People prayed and God immediately answered. Have you ever wondered why we don’t see the Acts-type miracles in our world, or at least in our country today? I wonder if it is be-cause we do not have the bold faith and bold actions that those people had that led to the bold, spiritual results. I’m praying that mar-riages would be supernaturally mended. Financial breakthroughs would occur. The hardest of hearts would be melted and given over unto salvation. I'm praying with all of my heart that God would take a church of peo-ple that may not be known or characterized by boldness, but God would give us courage, God would give us an outspoken spirit, God would give us the desire to act without fearing - that God would make us bold. We are going to learn how to pray bold prayers, how to speak truth boldly, how to obey God boldly, and we are going to watch as God uses ordinary men and women to do extraordinary things for the Kingdom. Sunday Mornings in the Children’s Ministry

Your kids love Sunday mornings at Chapin Baptist! You know the excitement that your kids have every VBS week? Well, that’s the excitement every Sunday as we do VBS style learning with the kids.

Here is what your kids are up to on Sunday mornings Preschool 9:00 -10:00 am: Small group and music. 10:00 - 11:00 am: Fellowship and snack 11:00 am - 12:15 pm: Worship experience and small group

School Kids 9:00 - 10:00 am: Surprise/games (that go along with the lesson) 10:00 - 11:00 am: VBS style rotation: Bible story, craft, snack and fellowship 11:00 - 12:15 pm: Awesome worship experience

Your children experience church at their level. They will be jumping for Jesus, enjoying skits, dramas, puppets, music and worshiping our God. They will also be digging deep in small group/Bible study time.

What are your kids learning this month?

Preschool

All preschoolers want to be “super.” They dash through the house with towels for capes attempting amazing feats that sometimes find them poised to jump off the dresser to see if they can fly. The thing these kids don’t know yet is that you don’t have to have special powers to be super. No, you can be super with God’s help. And, you can ALWAYS count on God.

This month, our preschoolers will learn they can be brave like Elijah and believe in the one true God. They can be strong like Esther and love God with their whole heart. They can be courageous like Rahab and trust God. They can be wise like Joshua and obey God. When they are like these awesome people whose stories are told in the Bible, they can be a Super Kid and do “super” God’s way.

Memory verse: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid …, for the Lord, your God goes with you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

Grade School

All of God’s creation is important to Him. Jesus told us that God remembers each sparrow, even though there are thousands (Luke 12:6-7). But Jesus said that people are even more valuable to God. In fact, God counts every hair on our heads! God shows us how important we are to Him when He pursues a relationship with us. And He started in the very beginning when He sought out Adam and Eve in the garden. God shows us how much He values us because He loves us.

Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. Like God’s honor is fueled by His love for us, we show honor back to God because we love Him. And we follow God’s example when we show honor to others. Showing honor demonstrates that we see others as God sees them. Every per-son we meet has value to God and deserves our honor.

The monthly memory verse is: “Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves.” Romans 12:10, When we spend the time to get to know people, we are showing them that their ideas, feelings, and abilities are valuable. We give them honor by recognizing the contributions they can make in our lives.

TRASH TO TREASURE

These are some of the needs for Children’s Ministry. You can drop these items off in the Children’s Building in a drop box. We appreciate it so much. These items are going to be used to do special crafts with the kids on Sunday mornings. Buttons Egg Crates Scrap fabric Sequins Wine corks Baby food jars Jars (pickle, mayo, olives) Sheets White coffee cups Dowels Crayons Markers Colored pencils Felt Stickers Yarn Toilet and paper towel rolls Paper Any other craft items T-shirts

Some of the things we will need to borrow for set change in worship are: sports related items - basketballs, baseball items, soccer ball, soccer goal, sports décor, hockey, ping pong, mini trampoline, etc. Please mark your name on the items so we can return to you at the end of the month. A few more things to borrow for next month worship are things from around the world, such as maps, wall hangings, flags, large statues, and more. Again, make sure your items are marked with you name so we can return these. If any questions about these things needed, please contact Sherri Roberts at 540-293-1017.

Opportunities in Children’s Ministry You are going to want to be a part of Children’s Ministry on Sunday mornings. We need you. There are many different opportunities to serve to make a difference in the lives of our children. Each and every part of serving is an important part of the puzzle that we are putting together with them to gain understanding of Christ’s love for them. We have many op-portunities open: Nursery, Toddlers, Crafts, Front Desk, Wel-coming, and Preschool Snacks, Preschool worship/music, Grade School Worship Experience, Drama Team help, Set team help. Please contact me for more information. I would love to talk to you about how you can help in serving our children. We view these as opportunities because these are opportunities for you to serve and be more like Jesus. Jesus always served others. We have a blast with the kids on Sun-day mornings and we would love for you to join our team!

Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

This is exactly what we are striving for. We are partnering with you, parents to train up our children to have a relation-ship with Jesus.

Merge3 Student Ministries Student Pastor James Clonts An Extension of the Family

I don't know a time in the last decade where I have seen more busyness in our households. With sports and extra curricular activities taking so much time, I am not surprised at how often I hear about strain in the homes of our church family. I had the chance to speak at the Parent Conference held by the Child Development Center and it reminded me of two big needs we need to make sure we champion at this point in our lives. Remember your primary focus as a parent is not to make your child into the most educated student or the most talented athlete, but to equip them and provide the environment to make them into a man or woman of God. And along those same lines, remember your children need to see you as more than just the authority in their lives. I am not saying be their friend and let them get away with being stupid. But make sure you have fun as a family together. Make sure you have a little adventure with your kids once in a while. Make memories- make one memory that as they get older you reward their maturity and responsibility with thankfulness and respect. I hope you feel our ministry helps support you in your role as parent because we really do want to just be a part of the family.

October Happenings October 6 - Come see David Crowder Band! We will be going to Mt. Horeb UMC in Lexington to see David Crowder. We will not have Merge on Sunday night. This event is open to all Middle School and High School stu-dents. We will meet at the church at 5:30 pm and leave by 6:00 pm to make sure we get good seats. Cost is $15. Please let me know if you want tickets. October 13 - 8:00 pm. Bonfire for High School at the home of Claude and Missy Schumpert. We will caravan from church after worship. We will have the regular schedule for Merge High School.

More Leaders Needed Remember you have something to uniquely offer our students. You were once a teenager too! You might even still act a little immature! If that is the case, we could use you here! Whether it’s for Wednes-day Walkover to play cards and board games, or it’s allowing us to have ten high school students in your house for a weeknight Bible study where you provide a seat and a roof, and we provide the teacher and the students! Or maybe you can volunteer to help pro-vide food once a month on a Sunday night or Wednesday night! You could even help run our website or draw/design media to put on campus or on a poster, or help fundraise for trips! We need YOUR help! We can find how God has wired you to help these students on their journey. Contact [email protected]

Ski Trip All Middle and High School students are invited to our Ski Trip to make sure all our spots are taken on our trip January 17-20 to WinterPlace Ski Resort in WV. We will leave after school on January 17 and will get back on Monday which is a school holiday! The trip is $325 for skiers and $225 for non-skiers. (They can snow tube for an addi-tional amount.) We will be staying at Glade Springs Resort which has an indoor basketball court, indoor pool, bowling alley, arcade room and movie theater. It’s going to be an awesome trip! Add to it that Pastor Don is coming to teach our Bible study time and this is an event you don't want your student to miss out on! The $50 deposit is due now to reserve your student’s spot. An additional $100 will be due

on October 13.

Thank you to all who donated baby items for our Zimbabwe trip. We were able to take over 150lbs of baby items that put unforgettable smiles on the faces of expectant mothers. We may never know

the impact of our actions but God does. Thank you

church family for your generosity.

Missional Matters

“Engage and Connect: What ever it takes”

Operation Christmas Child Once again it is time for Chapin Baptist to be-gin preparing for our annual program of provid-ing shoe-box gifts to be distributed to children throughout the world during the Christmas season. Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God’s love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Samari-tan’s Purse works with local churches and ministry partners to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ. Be a part of this worthy endeavor by packing your own shoebox to be dis-tributed to these children who hunger for God’s love. Also, this year, Cha-pin Baptist has a group of approximately 30 volunteers who will travel to Charlotte, NC, to participate in processing the shoe-boxes for shipment to various parts of the world. What a great time we will have! Look for the “Operation Christmas Child” display in the foyer in the coming weeks.

Pre-Fair Ministry (October 7-8) Fair Ministry (October 9-20)

It has been said that “mission begins at home.” Although this statement may or may not fully communicate a comprehensive mission strategy, it does remind us that we, as Chapin Baptists, are living in both a mis-sion base and a mission field. The South Carolina State Fair Ministry offers an abundance of mission opportunities right here at home. The dates for this year’s South Carolina State Fair ministry will be October 9-20, and the Pre-Fair ministry will be from October 7-8. Last year Chapin Baptist Church had eleven volunteers that participated in this event. If you are interested in participating in this year’s fair ministry, or for more informa-tion regarding dates and times available, please contact Kahn Chaddock at 803-

932-4048 or via email at [email protected].

31 out of 34 Ain't bad…

I have discovered a critical piece of data concerning successful marriage: "It's not always a bed of roses." To the contrary, successful long-term marriages have usually weathered some pretty awful storms. And I mean awful. For Laura and me, those awful storms seemed to roll in about every 6-7 years. Specifically, years 1, 8 and 15. Year 1 could be chalked up to dumb kids (19 and 18) who didn't have a clue what they were doing. And boy can dumb kids make a mess of things and boy did we ever. Thank goodness we were so radically committed to Jesus that divorce didn't cross our minds, regardless how miserable we were. But somehow

things got better.

Year 8 was a whole different ballgame. We were still dumb kids (27 and 26), but the responsibility of children was wearing us down and keeping us together (still not sure how that works). Nonetheless, those were some dark days, really dark days. Exhausted and poor we were stuck. And some-

how Jesus kept whispering in our ears, "Hang in there, this will get better." And somehow it did.

And then the typhoon hit, year 15. I really can't describe to you just how bad it got. But it was ugly. The pressure of teenage boys and double ca-reers almost pushed us to the breaking point. Honestly, there were times when the thought of hitting the road came rushing across both our minds as we fought to see who could get out the door first. But Jesus hung in there with us in the midst of all the anger and chaos. His constant, "Hang in

there, this will get better", may have been the only thing that kept us together. And amazingly, things got better, much better.

You do the math. That leaves 31 years of successful and happy married life. I'm glad to tell you that since year 15 we have had a pretty smooth road as a couple. Hardly even a bump. And cruising into year 35 we are both more head over heels in love with each other than we could have ever

imagined. So what's the moral of the story? Expect some really bad times. Bad times are just one of the chapters in a very long and happy novel.

One more thing. We have learned a few lessons over the years and would love to tell you our story in a four week seminar on Sunday nights start-ing the 3rd week of October. Childcare and 3 hours of date time will follow every Sunday evening session. Look for more information in the weeks

to come. This is a story you will not want to miss. And yes, things do get better, lots better, for those smart enough to stick with it.

Blessings,

Don

New Small Groups Beginning ….representing the Kingdom of God to the mobility-impaired

What is EmmanuWheel? The mission of EmmanuWheel is to provide wheelchair ramps and home modifications to wheelchair bound individuals who cannot afford the cost of such modifications. By addressing the specific needs of wheelchair bound individuals, it is the intent of EmmanuWheel to share the love of Christ in a practical way. Emmanu-Wheel hopes to create a lasting improvement in their lives. We will build ramps in Lexing-ton and Richland counties and possibly into Newberry County as well. We have a waiting list of 22 ramps to build and specifically Chapin Baptist has committed to build a ramp on Saturday, October 12 for an elderly handicapped individual on Wessinger Road. No skills or tools are necessary – just a willingness to help. All are welcome – young, old, male or female. If you would like to participate but are unable to help with the actual building you can make a monetary donation to Chapin Baptist Church with the notation for Emmanu-Wheel Ministry.

Rumors of God (first six weeks) Rumors of God is a call to Christians seeking a vision of the life God is calling them to, one that transcends the shallow-ness of our culture. This study will chal-lenge group members to reject what is plausible and to cry out for God to bring what is possible in their lives and in the church. Rumors of God is a rally cry for the church. Authors Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson share compelling stories about the work and activity of God today. Packed with fresh cultural observations and illuminating Scriptural insights, Ru-mors of God will ignite a passion in your heart to see your faith come to life. Gospel in Life – Grace Changes Every-thing (at the conclusion of Rumors of God) Gospel in Life is an intensive eight session course on the gospel and how it is lived out in all of life – first in your heart, then your community, and then out into the world. Week one opens the course with the theme of the city: our home now, the world that is. Week eight closes the course with the theme of the eternal city: our heavenly home, the world that is to come. In between we will look at how the gospel changes our hearts, changes our community, and changes how we live in the world. The Naked Gospel

It’s the truth you may never hear in church. This book is a chapter-by-chapter assault on the church jargon and double talk of our day. It puts forth a message that is simple but life changing. With a fresh take on scripture and an unapologetic style, The Naked Gospel will challenge you to re-examine everything you thought you already knew. This book strips down religion and shows us the faith and freedom God intends for us to have

in a fully abundant, radiant life.
