Successful implementation of desalination systems is challenging. This is particularly true offshore or in isolated onshore locations. There are many technical problems which can be overcome by sharing experience across not only oil and gas projects but also across industries.

In this workshop, jointly organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the European Desalination Society (EDS), experts from the oil and gas industry, together with experts from the water treating industry, will discuss common issues, challenges and potential solutions. Oil and gas projects involving desalination will be presented, together with technical ideas from both industries.

Topics to be discussed include design and operational requirements, research and development projects, economic constraints and typical project execution models and timelines.

The workshop will follow a typical SPE workshop format, in that the timetable has been designed to allow for post presentation discussions, which will enable maximum interaction and case cross industry learning.

Production of Low Salinity Water for:

• Water flooding

• Polymer enhanced oil recovery water injection

• Boiler feed water for steam flooding

• Desalting of crude oil

Treatment of Saline Produced Waters in:

• Shale gas fracturing flow back

• Surface discharge

• Coal bed methane operations

Sponsorship SupportSponsorship support helps offset the cost of producing workshops and allows SPE to keep the attendance price within reach of operations-level individuals, those who benefit most from these technical workshops.

Sponsors benefit both directly and indirectly by having their names associated with a specific workshop.

While SPE prohibits any type of commercialism within the technical session room itself, the Society recognises that sponsoring companies offer valuable information to attendees outside the technical sessions.

For a detailed list of available sponsorships, including benefits and pricing, please contact Rob Tomblin at [email protected].

Preliminary Technical AgendaTuesday, 6 March 2012

Session I 0915–1230

General Introduction to Oil and Gas Projects Involving Desalination

This session will focus on various projects in the oil and gas industry where desalination has been a major component.

The following will be presented:

Projects in various stages of development and operation will be presented and discussed where desalination posed significant challenges.

Session II 1400–1700

Pre-Treating Strategies - Chemistries and Technologies

The fundamentals of scaling and fouling will be a major emphasis in this session with application to both thermal desalination and membrane desalination. It is generally true that practitioners in the oil and gas industry must have an understanding of both membrane and thermal desalination technologies in order to make informed concept selection. This session will provide an opportunity to discuss new chemical and mechanical technologies for monitoring water quality and for mitigating fouling and scaling.

Wednesday, 7 March 2012Session III 0915–1230

Desalination Offshore

This session will look at designing desalination systems for offshore installation including ways to reduce capital cost, weight and space, as well as providing for smooth operations.

We plan to address the following topics:

The discussion will provide real-world operating experience from various installations around the world.

Session IV 1400–1700

New Technologies

The purpose of this session is to discuss new technologies for membrane and thermal desalination, water pre-treating, water quality monitoring and

mitigation of scaling and fouling. The discussions will include operating experience, monetary impact of scaling and fouling problems, early indicators of

problems, mitigation measures and possibilities for field testing of new technologies.

WORKSHOPWorkshop DescriptionDesalination is becoming increasingly important in the oil and gas industry with applications including:

About the Series This workshop is the first in a global series of events on water handling. Learnings from each workshop will be collected and edited into a scribe report posted online and accessible by all of the series participants. Each posted report will build on those that came before it and participants are encouraged to comment on, and discuss further, the topics of these postings as part of an online community.
