New Year Message from DG

There has a frenzy of activity amongst all

of our Rotary clubs in Yorkshire and

Lincolnshire with huge amounts of money

being raised for needy people. I have been

impressed by the imaginative ideas and

how much they are appreciated by our

local communities. Store collections have

as always been well supported and it is

good to hear “Oh its The Rotary” when

people drop money in your bucket. The

Santa Fun Runs, now established

community events fully demonstrated by

increasing number of runners, and drawing

huge crowds. Santa’s Grottos are a

magical experience when we are able to

provide presents for the children wide

eyed and truly believing. Sleigh runs

where children and parents alike turn out

to welcome Rotary some handing over

food for the Food Banks and donations for

the local charities we support. For those

alone at Christmas many Rotarians and

other volunteers are giving up their

Christmas Day to bring a little cheer to

those that would otherwise have been on

their own. These are just a few of the many

things that our 1270 Rotary Clubs have

been undertaking over this Christmas

period and which are making such a

difference in peoples lives. No other time

of year can Rotarians effectively epitomise

by this years theme of “Be a Gift to the

World”. I extend my heart felt thanks to

all Rotary Clubs for all you have done and

will continue doing for your local and

international communities. Happy New

Year.

Message from DG regarding Cumbrian

Flood Appeal

Thank you for all your support to date.

The time has come to manage the aid

being offered in a more targeted way.

Richard has organised collection of items

listed in my last message which I will

direct once I know the locations where

they need to go. Can I ask that we now

don't organise any further collection of

items although money is still needed

especially in Cumbria.

Message received via Rtn Philip from

Mark & Emma Cooke

Hi Philip

We hope this finds you well and that you

and Jenny are all set for Christmas.

The Fire Art project that Wortley RC

contributed towards back in 2009 has

deteriorated over the years so the local

Council and our Community Development

Group has had the image boards scanned

and reprinted and now have them re-

mounted on a building wall within the

park.

I just wanted to let you know that the

investment made by the Club is still doing

well and getting Wortley RC well known

down under.

It looks like we have sold the farm and we

have bought an acre block of land in town

(Mirboo North) and are having a new pad

built. Subject to the sale going through

smoothly we'll probably be in a rental

house between mid January and mid

December. It would be great to catch up

with you both when you're over.

Will keep you posted.

Kind regards and best wishes

REMEMBER THE 4-WAY TEST

1) Is it the TRUTH?

2) Is it fair to all concerned?

3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS?

4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Who Am I

1. I was born on 29th April, 1895 in Bath

Villas, Ashford. My father was a coal merchant, amateur musician and part-time church organist, and my mother was matron at a local school. I was brought up in Stamford, Lincs, and joined the Peterborough Cathedral choir, studied the organ and gained a scholarship to Stamford School. Aged 16, I earned a diploma as Associate of the Royal College of

Organists, and was awarded a degree (Bachelor of Music) by the University of Durham 2 years later.

2. I was organist at St Mary’s Church,

Melton Mowbray from 1914-1924 apart from 8 months in 1918 when I served in the DLI during WWI. During this time, I also worked on many musical projects in Leicester, Melton Mowbray and Stamford, conducting and producing operas of Gilbert and Sullivan others for amateur societies. When I was 24, I became England’s youngest Doctor of Music, again from Durham University.

3. In 1921, Sir Henry Wood visited

Leicester with the Queens Hall Orchestra, and I was asked to write a piece. Because of the time constraints, Sir Henry was unable to learn it, so I was asked to conduct the first performance. Later that year, I was invited to conduct the work at the annual promenade concerts. During the 1920s, I became one of the best known English conductors. I conducted the Mastersingers on tour in 1925, the London seasons for the D’Oyly Carte Company in 1926, and the newly rebuilt Savoy Theatre in 1929-30. During this time, I became particularly noted for performances of choral pieces including Handel’s “Messiah” and Walton’s “Belshazzar’s Feast”.

4. In October 1932, I contracted TB,

and was unable to work for almost 2 years. In 1936, I conducted my first opera at Covent Garden, but didn’t conduct there again until 1954. I made 3 lengthy tours to Australia and New Zealand, and almost accepted a permanent appointment there when WWII broke out. During the war, I directed the Halle Orchestra (1939-42) and the Liverpool Philharmonic (1942-48), and also became a popular Home Service radio broadcaster. I

was knighted in 1945. After the war, I continued to promote British Composers, conducting the premiers of Vaughan Williams Symphony No 9 in 1958 amongst others.

5. I was chief conductor of the Proms

from 1948 until 1967, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1950 to 1957. I made 2 tours of South America – 1950 and 1952. In 1961, when the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was in danger, I played a major part in saving it. In 1967, I underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer, and made an appearance at the last night of the proms later that year. I died 2 weeks later, and was buried in Stamford cemetery alongside other family members. I was married once, and had 2 children, one of whom died of polio in 1944

This Month’s Joke

In the beginning ................ In ancient Israel , it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?" And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath

the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)." Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent. To prevent neighbouring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP). And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. And indeed did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks. And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known. He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are." And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."

"YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE). That is how it all began. And that's the truth.
