PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
FELLOW ROTARIANS
On June the 26th 2017, I became President of our
club for the second time the last time was in
2008/2009. This last year has been a difficult year
for our club with the resignation of a few members
which dragged the club down - I hope that with the
help of all members both new and old we can pull
together and put this behind us and move on to
make this club a happy place to be which in the
past I know it was.
We also lost a senior member of our club earlier
this year I Am sure our thoughts are still with Kens
family.
My first point of business as with every year is the
VVR I would like to thank Rotarian Geoff for
taking on board the difficult task of spearheading
this event.
I look forward to all we are going to do throughout
2017/2108 and hope that you will support me to the
best of your ability but I would like to sign off with
a little message from me your president 2017/2018
REMEMBER TO ALL WORTLEY ROTARIANS

Miscellaneous
Millionaire’s Night
I have offered to 'spear-head' one of our important
money raising events - 'The Millionaire’s Night'. I
respectfully ask all members to keep clear to attend
when booking any holidays etc - our members are
diminishing so we need 'all hands on deck' so to
speak. The date is Saturday 20th January 2018 -
please make a diary entry now for next year|
I will be asking a few members to be part of my team,
as Rtn Geoff has done for the VVR - my aim is to
glamorize and encourage ticket sales which will mean
we raise more money to distribute locally| The plan
is to hold the first meeting in September an early start
to the organising is essential!
I look forward to all members help in this event - much
appreciated - Rtn Anne
Oaks Colliery Disaster Talk
I have booked Joan and Prof Mel Jones who are no
strangers to our club to give us a talk on a remarkably
interesting subject close to many hearts on 19th March
2018. This talk will explore evidence relating to the
Oaks Colliery disaster of 1866 (and the death of the
rescuer, Parkin Jeffcock of Cowley Manor and the
building of the new church at Mortomley in his
memory) the Westwood pit explosion, the Westwood
Riots etc.
Please invite Inner Wheel Ladies, Friends of
Rotary, wives, husbands, partners and friends - a night
of fellowship and friendship - make a diary entry! -

REMEMBER THE 4-WAY TEST
1) Is it the TRUTH?
2) Is it fair to all concerned?
3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Who Am I
1) I was born on 28th December 1856 in
Staunton, Virginia, the 3rd of 4 children in a Scots-Irish American family. My father was a Presbyterian, and briefly served as a chaplain to the Confederate Army. He went on to serve as minister of the First Presbyterian church in Augusta, Georgia, where we lived until 1870, and I became a communicant member of the Columbia First Presbyterian Church in South Carolina, which I remained a member of for the rest of my life.
2) I attended Davidson College in North Carolina in 1874, and transferred to Princeton as a freshman, graduating in
1879. Whilst there, I studied political philosophy and history, organized the Liberal Debating Society, and coached the Whig-Clio Debate Panel. During the 1876 Presidential Election, I declared my support for the Democratic Party and it’s nominee. In 1879, I attended Law School at the University of Virginia being involved clubs and debating societies.
3) I married my first wife in 1885, and we
had 3 children. By now, I was making a name as a professional academic, teaching political science, ending up back at Princeton, where I became President in 1902. The work that I did, attracted the attention of the major players in the Democratic Party, who offered me the nomination for Governor of New Jersey in 1910. I won the election with a dynamic progressive campaign, and implemented programs that brought me to the attention of the wider Democratic Party, leading to me gaining the nomination for President in 1912.
4) The 1912 Presidential election was a 3
way split, thanks to a split Republican Party vote, and I was elected President by 435 College Votes to 88, with a further 8 for the 3rfd candidate. I became the first Southern-born President to be elected since the Civil War. I was President when WWI broke out, and, having won re-election in 1916, and the revelations contained in the “Zimmerman Telegram”, I delivered a War message to Congress which was followed by a declaration ow War on 4th April 1917.
5) After the War ended in 1918, I spent 6
months in Paris, before the peace conference. En route home, I suffered an illness which led to a decline in health and prestige. I suffered a series of strokes and became an invalid in the White House. For my efforts in negotiating the Versailles Treaty, I was awarded the Nobel Peace prize later that year. After my Presidency ended, I moved into a Dc town house with my second wife, and opened a law office , but this closed in 1922. I made my last political speech on November 10th, 1923, and died of a stroke on 3rd February 1924.
Answers at the bottom of the newsletter
This Month’s Joke
In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the Mystic delivered grave news: "There's no easy way to tell you this, so I'll just be blunt. Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year." Visibly shaken, Laura stared at the woman's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself and to stop her mind racing. She simply had to know. She met the Fortune Teller's gaze, steadied her voice and asked, "Will I be acquitted?"
Another quick joke
Air Show Disaster - AIRCRAFT HITS FOUR BUILDINGS
It just shows the dangers of attending these events. Amazing photo below shows great detail. The pilot at low level had no control over his aircraft. It narrowly misses a crowd gathered for the air show and slams into four buildings. One can only imagine the horror of the occupants inside those buildings.
No one was killed but, probably scared the shit out of them.
Complaints to Thomas Cook Holidays
1. I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.
2. On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don't like spicy food at all.
3. The beach was too sandy.
4. Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined as my husband spent all day looking at other women.
5. There was no egg-slicer in the
apartment.
6. The roads were uneven.
7. I compared the size of our one-bedroom apartment to our friends' three-bedroom apartment and ours was significantly smaller.
