• 20+ T dipole field is the holy grail for accelerator people
• High rad zone, B=15-16 T with high margin
• Or operation of full accelerator at 10-15 T in 10-20 K gas
• Pulsed magnets in the accelerator chain: 3-6 T at 20-80 K for low power consumption
• Long SC links (s.f. 100-200 kA cable, 100-500 m long)

PROCESSING 50 µm x 12 mm x 29 m HTS tape
• Ic measurement from tape sample (start position) Ic(77 K, s.f.) = 174 A
• Average Ic value from Hall-Probe-Measurement (TapeStar) of the 29 m long HTS tape Ic(77 K, s.f.) = 161 A
• 2 x Ic drops detected in the range 23-25 m
• However severe problems of mechanical stability

General appearance of HTS tapes with 50 µm SS substrates
The new tapes reveal a strong tape curvature
(tape bow) due to intrinsic film stresses of the
coatings
YBCO tape
Curvature does not exceed the critical one: no deterioration of Ic can be obtained after flattening (but not easy)
Optimization of the coating process was not easy …

But bending is an issue for practical use…
L. Rossi - ARIES-WP14 progress Meeting @ CERN - 25 Nov 2019
At high temperature stainless substrate is soft. And YSZ is thick… Using YSZ with ABAD to try to correct the curvature
Also more sophisticated attempts…

Image with hall probe scanning
• The scan (at 77 K, s.f.) shows a
very homogeneous coating with no
cracks. Resolution was 200 µm.
• Scan with a higher resolution (50
µm) of an area with a slight
disturbance. It does not seem to
result from cracks either.

L. Rossi - ARIES-WP14 progress Meeting @ CERN - 25 Nov 2019
We need to review the process since the yield isnot satisfactory (about 50%):
The tape is nowunder finshing to beused for technologytest coils
Conclusions: the process need to be modified for producing straight tape. Either change system for 12 mm St.St. tape handling (especially polishing) or use Hastelloy for substrate

Outlook to next activity
• The goal of the D14.4 deliverable has been fully achieved and actually
exceeded, with all production of ten long lengths foreseen in the ARIES
program fulfilled.
• Now we will proceed to fully characterization as required by the MS46
“Characterization of first long length conductor”, due by M36 (30 April
2020).
• As a further step we will test this tape to verify its use in magnet technology:
suitability for winding, adaptability to solder (especially low Cu coating
thickness), etc…
