Sound: In the video ‘hurt’ it is a reflection of Johnny Cash’s life; it shows he is now alone. In the lyrics it talks about remembering, hurt, loss and holes. The remembering is conventional as the footage of when he was young is a memory he still holds. The hurt is conventional as he seems very sad throughout the video, his eyes are dull, he is crying. The loss is conventional as he looks up at a picture of his mother, she isn’t around anymore. The term ‘the needle tears a hole’ is conventional as it talks about how empty he is, his emotions and loneliness in the video portray this. The focus on John shows that this video is him, alone and the lyrics talk of his lack of company too. The narrative of this video is purely about his life. Although Mr Cash is now a much respected man, it seems as though he doesn’t realise the good. Whenever John says about ‘my sweetest friend’ the camera focuses on someone close to him. The first time is a picture of his mother, the second is his wife. This allows us to see who he is referring too. When there are flashbacks to the footage of when John was younger, there is diegetic sound. This is conventional as it shows how confident and happy he was, and it simply tells us what is going on in this situation. These emotions are conventional for country music as it is reflecting his feelings through music which is what country music is based around. Camerawork: The close-ups on Johnny Cash allow us to see how his eyes are so very tired. This represents how he is tired of life, this also helps to represent his age. The inter cutting between the present and past allows the video to go to and from footage, of when he was younger. This represents his character in two different ways as we can see the difference from when he was younger and very violent in comparison to when he is old and frail. This is conventional for the country music genre because it is connecting with his emotions and expressing that to the audience. The wide shot of his wife shows how she looks over him and sees his sorrow. At this point in his life he was struggling with health issues. Back in older traditions a man would not want to be frail as it’s his responsibility to be the carer. This is conventional because country is about family and also can be about empathy. It shows him in his home at his weakest point in life, fighting the demons of his past and trying to repent before his death nears. Not every song can relate to everyone but if you are an empathetic person you can still engage with the emotion of the song. The different angles are conventional for a music video because it gives different views of the scene. Often when there is a shot of the artist it is high angle to make him appeal older and frail.

This is conventional for the country music genre because it is

connecting with his emotions and expressing that to the audience. The wide shot of his wife shows how she looks over him and sees his sorrow. At this point in his life he was struggling with health issues. Back in older traditions a man would not want to be frail as it’s his responsibility to be the carer. This is conventional because country is about family and also can be about empathy. It shows him in his home at his weakest point in life, fighting the demons of his past and

trying to repent before his death nears. Not every song can relate to everyone but if you are an empathetic person you can still engage with the emotion of the song. The different angles are conventional for a music video because it gives different views of the scene. Often when there is a shot of the artist it is high angle to make him appeal older and frail. This is to represent that he is connecting with the viewers and showing a conscious part of himself to them by telling his story. This is conventional for the genre as it explores heartache and regret is certainly that. Composition is used conventionally in most shots. But more particularly in the image to the left. It is the artist playing with a porch door showing his surroundings. The area is peaceful yet the song still holds so much emotion. This connotes that only when the mind is in a peaceful place can it think clearly. It also suggest he is

now seeking refuge in the beauty of the earth and embracing it. This is conventional for country music because country fans always seek their sanity within the earth as they are mostly spiritual and stereotypically live in the country side. It also shows the raw emotion of the image at the fact that he is singing alone to try and relieve himself of his feelings. Country music is w

Editing: There is a cut to a photograph of John’s mother. As he is singing about loss this is conventional because she is passed. He is looking back and reflecting on his ‘empire of dirt’ saying he’ll let everyone down. The cutting here is significant because this suggest that is

what broke him. There is a cut to the dead fish when he mentions ‘broken thoughts’. This is used as symbolism because the fish has

been broken and he is saying his thoughts are dead. He is comparing his thoughts to the fish’s state. The cuts from him to his wife, to archive her, shows that his love for her is dear and he is thinking about her. The static camera helps us to see his surroundings giving us a wide variety of scenery. The montage effect helps to piece the separate videos together, allowing it to really

make sense. When the pace of the music gets faster, the editing follows this timing. This allows the audience to really connect with Johnny Cash’s story, helping us to understand his loneliness. The eyeline match from him to the piano when he closes the lid is metaphorical. As it’s the end of the song it appears to have some sort of hidden meaning. The sorrow of his face shows emotion so it could be signifying that a chapter in

his life has been closed. Shortly after this video was released, he passed. So it could represent that he could see this coming and it was his final word of emotion and a plea for forgiveness. The fade to black at the end signifies the darkness of the video and that is carries a mysterious subliminal message. The message is clear in the lyrics but this edit just shows the raw emotion and helplessness of the artist.

Mise-en-scene: The use of props in the video helps to tell the artists story. The broken records and family photos indicate that Johnny Cash is looking back on his past life. The sense of broken also reflects on the image we make in our heads. As it makes us think of heart break. His reflection is portrayed well; the food on the table indicates that

he has a lot of money but no one to share it with. He has a feast and no company; it looks as though it’s his last supper. This is another way he is portrayed as old. As Jesus had his last supper before death and death doesn't cast upon most of us until we are

old. This represents Johnny Cash as religious with old fashioned morals. Johnny Cash’s black suit is dark, this shows that he is maybe going through a dark time in his life, he is maybe a widow? Johnny Cash is well known for his black suit and its connotation of funerals. The setting is also quite dull; it looks as though it’s his family home, but just him there now alone. This gives you a very stereotypical image, of an

old man who is lonely, with a big house and empty rooms.

The run down Cash museum is very deserted this shows that he isn't appreciated anymore. The lighting used is low-key; this is quite depressing and links to how Johnny Cash is trying to express emotions. As the songs quite sad and teary so the artist’s emotions shine through the lack of lighting. However, in the parts of the video where Johnny is looking back on the happier parts of his life, when he was younger, the lighting is a higher key, as he was obviously more cheerful then. I think that’s the use of mise-en-scene is better in the video Hurt as it works well with representing age and the contrast of the same character is clear, as there is a noticeable reflection. There are trophies which have cowboy hats. This is conventional for the genre because cowboys are always associated with country music.
