Horticulture
• Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) is the holding company of award-
winning attractions Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari, River Safari and
Singapore Zoo.
• WRS is dedicated to the management of world-class leisure attractions
that foster conservation and research while educating visitors about
animals and their habitats.
• A self-funded organisation, WRS also collaborates with various partners,
organisations and institutions aimed to protect local and global biodiversity

Landscape Management-
Horticulture Department
Horticulture
The Horticulture department in WRS aim to promote parks development that
provides the guests with memorable experience combining conservation,
educational and recreational opportunities through sustainable landscape
design and planting based on natural environment setting for fauna habitats
and human social benefit.
The team consists of ISA Certified Arborists (CA),Certified tree climbers,
Certified Practising Horticulturists (CPH) and Landscape architects that
oversee daily operations like tree pruning, crown reduction, planting and exhibit
landscape design.
While some of our works (e.g. arboriculture) are outsourced, we do have in-
house gardeners who carry out daily routine operational works.

Safety Management-Policy
19
Safety Management-Risk
Assessment Form
Standard SOP:
Risk assessment for
work activities are
reviewed on a 2
years basis
Toolbox meeting will be
carried out for workers
before commencement of
horticulture operations.

21
Safety Management-
Staff Training Staff frequently send for training: WRS arborist attending works at height for
supervisors as they supervise pruning works (e.g. use of lorry crane or tree
climbers for tree pruning) on a regular basis.
22
Innovation-Equipment
Increase productivity through
mechanisation with environmentally
friendly equipment: Purchasing
equipment(e.g chainsaw) which does not
run on diesel and are battery operated.
User friendly equipment: The battery
operated chainsaw emits a significantly
lesser vibration which is much
beneficial to the user in the long run
especially during period of heavy
usage.
23
Innovation- Sustainability
No Carbon emission
No chemicals
User friendly
Less noise
24
Innovation-Mobile applicationsIncreasing productivity: Establishing mobile applications (apps) to carry out
tree inspections within WRS. Gone are the days of using Visual Tree
Assessment(VTA) paper checklist which can be cumbersome.
Export inspection
checklist into PDF
or files in other
format as
documentation

Using technology to assist in inspection methodology: Carrying out test
bedding of drone usage to carry out aerial inspection of trees within WRS. The
drone can access hard to reach places that are out of the line of sight

26
Innovation-Determine threshold
level to Maintenance regime
Formulating template to determine threshold level in relation to maintenance regime within WRS Parks. This
will allow for increase productivity and for a proper system to be established for daily operations
27
Potential Contracts
opportunities
• Currently WRS consists of 4 parks namely Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari,
River Safari and Singapore Zoo.
• In addition, from 2020 onwards, there will be a new rainforest park and
the existing Jurong Bird Park will be relocated to Mandai.
• All this parks will requires cyclic horticultural, arboricultural and turf
maintenance services.
• Other services include set up for landscape decorations and thematic
landscape projects within WRS.
28
Potential Contracts
opportunities Arboriculture: Tree pruning/removal, deadwooding and crown reduction works
29
Potential Contracts
opportunities Horticulture: Shrub pruning, planting and mulching (e.g.)
30
Potential Contracts
opportunities Turf management : Grasscutting
31
Potential Contracts
opportunities Plant decorations: Supply plants and set up landscape decorations for events
