Wärtsilä Power Plants

Positioning fast-reacting gas-fired power plants as

the optimum solution for integrating renewables

BACKGROUND

Global decarbonisation programmes have triggered seismic change in the energy industry with unprecedented operational flexibility needed to rebalance the intermittency of renewables. BLUE is retained by Wärtsilä Power Plants to deliver a global thought leadership programme that positions its combustion engine power plants as the optimum solution for enabling reliable, affordable electricity systems with a high penetration of wind and solar power.

OBJECTIVES

Operating in an industry keen to develop effective solutions to renewables integration, BLUE’s objective is to demonstrate that Wärtsilä’s power plants are the most attractive investment option to balance electricity systems, over and above solutions such as energy storage, smart grids and demand side management.

APPROACH

BLUE’s approach to delivering sustained and targeted media coverage is twofold. It focuses firstly on harnessing independent research to show the benefits of new combustion engine technology versus conventional solutions and secondly on conveying Wärtsilä’s perspective on key marketplace challenges. Working alongside Wärtsilä’s communications team, BLUE also developed and implemented a PR strategy for the launch of Wärtsilä’s new book ‘Power Supply Challenges’ released at POWER-GEN Europe 2014.

RESULTS

Six months into the campaign BLUE has secured in-depth print and online coverage in key electric energy outlets including Electric Light & Power, POWER-GEN Video Daily, Power Engineering and Buying and Using Utilities. New relationships established with global power media aided in securing a full programme of interviews for Wärtsilä at POWER-GEN Europe.
