Most people enjoy fireworks on the 4th of July; in fact, the tradition dates back to July 3, 1776 when John Adams wrote a letter to his wife, Abigail, suggesting fireworks be used to celebrate America’s independence from England.

However, there is a 500-year-old Chinese tradition that is probably the most unique fireworks display in the world. At the time, the small farming village of Nuanquan wanted to celebrate the Chinese New Year, but couldn’t afford pricey fireworks — instead, local blacksmiths were prompted to create their own light display using tools of the trade.

DaShuHua — which roughly translates to “throwing tree fireworks” — was inspired by the beautiful golden sparks that were thrown off during their iron working. This lead them to throw molten iron onto the city walls, exploding into a shower of sparks.

Speaking of Iron.
