Some examples from London
‘Acting locally’ in London? Pretty much like anywhere else? Lots of energy, some great ideas, some not
so good What’s different? Crowded! Diverse! Regional government near at hand Close links between local and national and
global
Projects, programmes and support
Programmes are aimed at delivering certain common behaviour changes
Projects are more local and address specific issues
Support networks enable people to find the ways to change that suit them
Food Up Front
Food Up Front was set up in May 2007 to encourage Londoners to start growing fruit and vegetables in small gardens and on balconies. They started with a grant from social enterprise support group UnLtd.
Jagonari Cycles
Jagonari, a Women’s Centre in Whitechapel in East London, created a bicycle training course for local Bengali women. They wanted to give real choices to the women they worked with - an easy form of transport and an enjoyable way to keep fit.
Sanford is the oldest housing co-op in London. All the tenants (about 120 people) are collectively landlords. They have a large carbon reduction project, financed by the Energy Saving Trust (EST), EDF, and others. .
They have replaced old gas boilers with high efficiency

V-ital Ingredients - London
London is the most diverse city in the world. Over 300 languages are spoken; (almost) all the world's religions are represented. London's menu includes food from many nations and cultures. This is a food programme in Brixton working to engage young men, rooted in Rastafarian faith and ethics.
Give and take days
We’ve all got too much stuff! So Give it away… And get some new stuff? Started by community organisations Increasingly promoted bylocal councils
And over in Albert Square… The ASSA Home Energy project – looking to tackle
big old Victorian homes… Aim to develop a community Low Emissions
Energy Network (LEEN) to serve all members of our community that:1. educates residents and landlords about the economic and environmental benefits2. makes it easy and affordable to implement 3. provides an on-going support network to sustain the savings
A full suite of energy services including microgeneration – a community ESCO
Keeping it all together
It’s almost impossible to know what’s going on in a dense borough of 250,00 people
(and there’s 32 boroughs…) London 21 seeks to network through
newsletter etc. Many new ideas emerging
“Bringing like-minded people together to make environmental change happen”
A social networking site for small environmental projects and organisations

Mapping for Change
“It is not down in any map; true places never are”. - Herman Melville (Moby Dick)
Or maybe we don’t have the right kind of maps… Yet…
Five years ago: the London 21Green Map
Localising this: the Hackney Wick Community Map (and others like it)
London (and everywhere!) needs:
Strong policy Strong infrastructure Strong engagement
Local action plays a critical role in all these
From good practice to common practice
