The West Salem Civic Club Invites You…

Boxe l de r Bug Have you seen these little guys around lately? It’s that time of year when the boxelder bug will emerge from its winter hiding places (crevices of your house-inside and out, under debris and leaves, etc.) to mate and then return to its host tree to feed during the summer- the box elder tree. They are also known to feed on maple and ash trees. Fortunately, they do not cause damage to their hosts nor to their hiding spots (your house!) other than their red excrement, which can stain furniture, curtains, etc. They love to sun on southern exposures and can gather in very large numbers on and around your home in the spring and fall.

To control this unsightly occurrence, you can simply spray them with a soap and water mixture. It breaks down their exoskeleton, killing them within minutes. They are also prone to drowning, so a hard stream of water might do the trick. Some insecticides also work but aren’t necessary. Fear not! Boxelder bugs don’t bite.

When the mixture is creamy lower the heat and serve with tortilla chips. ** This dip can be made with lower calories and tastes the same by using the same amounts as those above for low fat cream cheese, turkey pepperoni, low salt cream of chicken or mushroom soup.

The City of Winston-Salem’s Cycling Sunday event is considering West Salem! The city blocks off several streets to motor vehicles in the downtown area twice per year for a biking and walking event aimed at allowing easy access for citizens to get active. For this year’s route, they are considering the loop of South Poplar & Marshall Streets from West Street to Salem Avenue because, among other things, it connects to the Salem Creek Greenway. According to Matthew Burczyk, fellow West Salemite and Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the city: We will have volunteers and police officers on hand to direct traffic if drivers need to get on or off the course and to keep everyone safe. The event will be held on Sunday, May 19, 3-6pm. This year we’re partnering with the County Health Department to offer games and activities on the Salem Creek Greenway and we hope to have food vendors, etc. so it should be a great atmosphere. Matthew and the city would like your input and feedback! Especially from those neighbors along the route. Send your comments to [email protected]. In other news from Matthew, Broad Street from Salem Avenue to Cotton Street will be resurfaced this spring. Bicycle lanes will be added along with improvements to the on-street parking. The city is also considering a new bike lane on the climbing sides of Academy Street from Sunset Drive to Granville Drive to help cyclists trying to pedal up those hills.

DIY Tips HOW TO MAKE A WINE CORK WREATH

Materials 12" straw wreath (Available at AC Moore or Micheals for $3.99) Hot Glue gun Hot Glue Gun Glue sticks (You need a good amount – I used like 12 of the 4in sticks). Wine Corks (You need around 120) Vacuum (cause you are gonna need to clean up the straw) Twine or floral wire Let’s Get Started 1. Remove the plastic from the wreath but not the little clear strings that keep it together! 2. Tie your twine or floral wire so that it wraps around the wreath but still has room for about 2 - 3 fingers to fit underneath. 3. You are going to want to cover the entire front of the wreath in corks laying side by side. The best way to do this is with a long swath of hot glue down one side of the cork. 4. Line the corks up all nice and neat in a little row. You are not going to want to go around the back side of the wreath - remember - it's going to be hanging on a wall so you want the backside to be flat. 5. You will get to a stubborn part where they do not line up like you want them to. So you just have to tuck them in where you can... still trying as hard as you can to stay flat for this first layer. BUT.. you probably won't be able to and that's totally ok! You can go a little wild and crazy. Your goal with the first layer is to cover up as much of the straw as possible. Any way you can. 7. You will need to glue some corks on the twine you tied on the wreath, just make sure you have some slack in the back! 8. Once you get the first layer of corks on, the long strip of glue is no longer going to cut the mustard. You want to glue the corks at random angles so that basically means you need some random (a.k.a..."creative") glue placement. That's pretty much all there is to this! The more random the second layer is the better the wreath looks (there is no third layer)! You hang it from the little twine or wire you placed around the base at the very beginning (so don't forget to do that step). What I usually do before I get started is pick out all my special corks (the ones with the pretty pictures and designs on them) and save them for the second layer. If I have a lot of a particular kind of one cork - I usually use those as my base corks. If you want to insert flowers, a letter, or house numbers, do this after you complete the first layer. Once you have glued the letters or numbers down or stuck the flowers into the wreath, begin the second layer of corks! If you feel like you have a shortage of corks, visit a local restaurant and ask for some of their corks. Or please feel free to email me as Reid runs a restaurant and we have no shortage of corks at our house. I would love to help support a fellow neighbor in this fun project! ~ Katy [email protected] Step by step photos @ http://www.save-on-crafts.com/corkwreath.html

The 600 block of Poplar Street is home to 7 different decades of homes beginning in the 1840s. 622 South Poplar is a great example of these houses. It was built in 1854 and is known as the Edward Butner House. Mr. Butner was a Foreman, Superintendent & General manager of the Francis and Henry Fries mills. The Butner House was originally built by Samuel Tesch. Mr. Tesch was responsible for early buildings in the Poplar Street block. It is believed many parts of the houses as well as other houses on the block contain earlier constructions, which were called out-lot buildings, possibly dating to the 18th century. Marilyn Ruff Clemmons currently resides at this address.
