The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s seventieth season has provided many opportunities to celebrate the past history of the orchestra, enjoy excellent performances in this season, and also to set a direction for the future of the orchestra. While each season has defining opportunities and challenges, this seventieth season has proven to be a wonderful success on an artistic and financial basis. Thanks to robust ticket sales and generous contributions by individuals and corporations, the WSO is pleased to report its 11th consecutive operating surplus at May 31, 2018.

It is not insignificant that the WSO, whose history has included some very difficult financial challenges at various points in its history, completes its 70th anniversary season in the strongest financial position it has held in its history. Eleven years of modest surpluses, in conjunction with a growing endowment fund has put the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in a stable and optimistic position to provide wonderful programs and initiatives for years to come.

The generous support of the community makes all of this possible. Of particular significance has

Message from the

President and Chair

been the growing number of gifts to the WSO in the estates of friends and supporters of the WSO. These generous gifts have helped the WSO through some challenging periods and helped to more than double the WSO’s endowment fund at the Winnipeg Foundation.

The WSO had set a goal of adding $700,000 to its endowment fund in its 70th year, and thanks largely to the very generous gifts of Tannis Richardson and Michael Nozick to support Sistema Winnipeg, and matching funds from the Endowment Incentives— Canadian Cultural Investment Fund, the WSO’s endowment grew by almost two million dollars in the past year. Yet another reason to celebrate.

The fall season started with an unforgettable gala performance by Itzhak Perlman with the WSO for a capacity audience. The season continued with robust community support for concerts, programs and special events. The full season was studded with wonderful performances, historical references to the WSO’s past, and the celebration of Alexander Mickelthwate’s twelve year tenure as the music director of the WSO.

On February 14, 2018, after a lengthy and careful process, the board of the WSO was pleased to announce the selection of the WSO’s ninth music director, Maestro Daniel Raiskin, who will join the orchestra at its gala season opening concert on Monday, September 17, 2018.

I extend special thanks to all of the board members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Their involvement with committees and special projects of many types has helped to shape and direct this very successful season. Thank you to our music director and executive director for their work in leading the artistic and administrative functions of the WSO. All of the staff and musicians made important contributions to the mission of the WSO and their efforts and talents made the successes of this season a reality.

At the WSO, the story of the orchestra is intertwined with the story of our community. From the incorporation of the organization on February 13, 1947 to its first concert in December 1948, and through the ensuing years of musical development, the WSO and its supportive and inspired community have worked together to provide a strong symphonic presence in Winnipeg.

The WSO’s 70th anniversary season was filled with festivities, commemorative opportunities, and many reasons to be thankful for the rich and varied traditions and strengths of this organization. We are so pleased that our 70th season was an artistic, community service, and financial success. In many ways it was also a year of major transitions as we said farewell to Alexander Mickelthwate and also engaged in the process of finding the WSO’s 9th Music Director.

We started the year with a community celebration concert to recognize the 70 year history of the WSO. We were able to recognize the contributions of many people who have had a hand in building and maintaining the WSO on an administrative, governance, artistic and community support level. We recognized past musicians, board members,

Message from the

Executive Director

donors, staff, collaborating artists, sponsors and funders for the important roles they played in helping the WSO reach its 70th anniversary. It was a wonderful celebration of the people who have been part of the WSO throughout its seventy years.

The achievement of the WSO’s increased stability is a story of community engagement, partnerships with other arts organizations, private businesses, individuals, and other community based organizations. Our connections and determination to serve the community generously with programs and services that will inspire, enlighten, educate, engage, and entertain people of all ages, cultures, and economic status has proven to strengthen the WSO in every way.

While we looked back and celebrated the past, we also set our direction firmly toward the future in many significant ways. In terms of artistic recognition, the WSO was nominated for a Juno award for its recording of The Arctic Symphony and The Shaman, and it also received recognition from the Canadian Music Centre for its outstanding contribution to the development of Canadian new music.

As always, the successes of the WSO are a collaborative effort in every way. From the fine work that WSO musicians do on the stage, to the work of the administrative staff and board members behind the scene and the volunteers. We have had a number of significant changes in the administrative staff over the past year. We thank Neil Middleton, Shannon Darby, Chris Lee, Evan Klassen, Desiree La Vallee, James Robertson, Alex Eastley, Julia McIntyre, and, of course, Alexander Mickelthwate for their work and contribution to the WSO.

This was a very satisfying season on so many levels. We look forward to the coming year and the coming decades with optimism. We know that the rich artistic tradition linked to symphonic music has enduring value and benefits for our current population and for the future. We remain committed to the wonders of creation from generations past and at the same time determined to joyfully embrace the new opportunities, challenges, and changing issues and priorities of the community we serve.

Itzhak Perlman

Alexander’s 12th and final full season as music director was also a celebration of the WSO’s 70th anniversary, the journey starting in 1948 when then music director Walter Kaufmann launched the first regular season of the WSO at the Winnipeg Auditorium.

Joining Alexander on the opening Masterworks concerts was Victor Feldbrill, conductor of the WSO from 1958-1968 and at 93, a still vital force on the podium. Maestro Feldbrill conducted Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 and many former WSO musicians were in the audiences for the standing ovations.

The 2017-18 WSO season continued to display our orchestra’s stimulating programming of well-known masterworks and new discoveries to excite WSO audiences, in presentations designed for new listeners, concert-wise veterans and everyone else in between.

Introducing the season was our second annual opening-night gala in which a soloist of international renown is featured. Violinist Itzhak Perlman appeared with the orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, and this legendary artist’s presence underscored his longstanding worldwide acclaim in a concert that quickly sold out shortly after its announcement.

A broad sampling of the core symphonic literature in the Masterworks series was highlighted, along with significant first performances by your orchestra:

Anton Bruckner’s music has always been close to Alexander’s heart and the first WSO performance of Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony brought this moving and majestic work to life. Soprano Sarah Jo Kirsch plus a fine vocal quartet joined Alexander in the WSO’s first performances of Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins along with Liszt’s Dante Symphony, both part of the orchestra’s Autumn Festival entitled Angels & Demons. Alexander’s closing Masterworks concert featured Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben - an orchestral tour-de-force Alexander had also presented in his first season as music director.

A fine group of guest conductors appeared in the Masterworks series:

Incoming music director Daniel Raiskin led Henryk Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, Winnipeg-born Keri-Lynn Wilson conducted Nielsen’s Symphony No. 3, Yoram Traub presented an exciting all-Spanish program and Jun Märkl conducted a program of Dvořàk, Strauss and Ravel that showcased every section of the WSO. Jean-Marie Zeitouni presented Rachmaninoff’s Symphony

No. 2 and José Luis Gomez returned in a program of Schumann and Beethoven.

Our 2017-18 season introduced splendid soloists in their WSO debut performances: Honens Competition-winner Luca Buratto made his WSO debut with Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto. Montreal Competition-winner Bomsori Kim appeared in Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, and the exciting guitar virtuoso Gaëlle Solal was heard in Rodrigo’s ever popular Concierto de Aranjuez.

Other soloists included violinist Alexandre da Costa, cellist Yegor Dyachkov, pianists Natasha Paremski and Katherine Chi. WSO violinists Gwen Hoebig and Karl Stobbe plus trumpeter Paul Jeffrey took solo spotlights in other Masterworks programs. Presented by the WSO, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra led by Bramwell Tovey made a special appearance. Brandon’s own James Ehnes was the violin soloist.

In his fifth season as resident conductor, Julian Pellicano took charge of a wide variety of programs, winning audiences and orchestra members alike with his excellent musicianship and engaging personality throughout our Pops, Kids Concerts and

outreach offerings. Julian also conducted the WSO’s annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah with an excellent team of local soloists.

Our Pops season offered a wide mix of music and styles for all to enjoy. Highlights included sold out shows with The Tenors during the Holiday period, plus a highly successful continuation of our partnership with Rainbow Stage in a concert performance of the Broadway classic A Chorus Line. Vocal group Arrival from Sweden opened the Pops season with an exciting ABBA show, fiddler Ashley MacIsaac, vocal group Five By Design, skater Kurt Browning and acrobatic group Cirque de la Symphonie all added to a most successful Pops season.

Live music to film continued to expand in our season, with performances of Chaplin’s classic City Lights, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and The Wizard of Oz all presented to enthusiastic audiences.

Our Friday morning matinée series of a featured Masterworks

piece saw growing audiences plus a strong contingent of students who also enjoyed pre-concert talks and tours organized by our Outreach and Education Department.

Alexander and the orchestra visited seven high schools throughout the city in the aptly titled Up Close and Orchestral series, promoting the season and filling the various gyms and auditoriums with great music. Similarly, our Adventures in Music series in March and April brought approximately 12,000 elementary school students to the concert hall for a highly successful concert that featured dancers, singers, entertainers and plenty of symphonic inspiration from our musicians.

Our Great-West Life Kids Concerts series again proved highly successful, both in the lively programs and engaging pre-concert activities. Enchantment Theatre Company’s Scheherazade was a highlight, as was an action-packed show featuring the beloved entertainer Al Simmons. A special home-grown show with Mr. Mark (Mark Cameron), and Dandi Production’s The Twins and the Monster rounded the series out.

Kurt Browning

The WSO regularly packs up instruments and musicians and heads out on the open road to take the full orchestra to communities throughout the province and beyond. Our regular concert series in Brandon presented a wide range of musical offerings, as we have done, four times per season, ensuring that music lovers in the Western regions of Manitoba can experience the wonder of live symphonic music.

December was especially busy, as the orchestra embarked on its Power Smart Holiday Express Tour with family-focused holiday concerts in Steinbach, Portage la Prairie and Brandon. Summer of 2018 found the WSO appearing in Kenora, the large audience enjoying a lovely summer evening’s program of music dockside.

The WSO continues to connect with rural schools through the Bach to School program. Each year a group of five musicians visits five schools in small communities introducing more than 1500 students in Grades 1-8 to live music.

As always, the WSO continues to explore touring opportunities in Manitoba to ensure that all Manitobans may regard the orchestra as their own.

Fundraising & DevelopmentWe are tremendously grateful to our special WSO donors and sponsors, without whom the symphony could not exist in its current form. Donations to the WSO support our general operations, our education and community outreach programs, the New Music Festival and Sistema Winnipeg. 2017 – 2018 was an exceptional year in fundraising and development, ensuring that the WSO is able to continue to perform at the highest possible level and still keep the ticket prices affordable. Below are some of the highlights of our fundraising year.

George and Andrea Cibinel hosted a party in their home to raise funds for the Winnipeg New Music Festival. Local musicians, the Electric String Quartet, performed the Philip Glass String Quartet #3 “Mishima” on electric guitar.

Michael Nozick and Cheryl Ashley and family donated $500,000 toward a new endowment fund for the Sistema Winnipeg program. This fund will support 16 students in the Sistema program every year.

The WSO hosted its annual spring gala with over 400 people in attendance. For the first time ever, the event took place at the Centennial Concert Hall with a champagne reception in the lobby, a performance of Cirque de la Symphonie accompanied by the orchestra in the hall, and the dinner followed in Alloway Hall at the Manitoba Museum.

On opening night the WSO hosted an exclusive fundraising dinner with Itzhak Perlman for 89 guests on the Piano Nobile.

Fourteen new people let the WSO know that they had made a gift in their will for the WSO this year, making a total of 45 people who are members of the Legacy Circle. A total of $213,458 was received from donations in wills in 2017 – 2018. These funds contributed to the WSO’s ability to provide exceptional musical experiences to over 101,000 patrons who visited our concerts this year.

Ravi and Mark Dookeran hosted a party in their home to raise funds for the Winnipeg New Music Festival. International pianist Lubomyr Melnyk performed to the delight of the guests.

WSO Board member Ida Albo hosted a fundraising dinner for 60 people at Embers Restaurant at The Forks Market with the #1 pizza chef in the world, Franco Pepe from Italy.

Mrs. Tannis M. Richardson donated $500,000 to help establish an endowment fund for the Sistema Winnipeg program. This fund will support 16 students in the program every year.

Sistema Winnipeg is a daily, intensive, music education program that helps children with the fewest resources and greatest need. The program delivers musical training to children after school for three hours a day, five days a week, at no cost to their families. Sistema Winnipeg encourages children to reach their full potential and inspires greater social change within the community.

Sistema Winnipeg is a partnership between the WSO, Seven Oaks School Division and Winnipeg School Division. In 2017-18, its seventh year, the program engaged 160 children in grades 1-8 at two school locations, Elwick School and King Edward School. Thirteen students at St. John’s High School also participated in the program.

This season was pivotal for the long-term sustainability of Sistema Winnipeg. On November 9, 2017, the WSO announced the establishment of a Sistema Endowment Fund following two generous $500,000 donations from Mrs. Tannis M Richardson and the Michael Nozick Family. Matching government funds and additional individual donations have grown the fund to over $1.7 million. This fund will annually supplement the program’s operational costs. The WSO aims to grow the endowment to $12 million.

This season offered plentiful, exciting performance opportunities for Sistema. In November, Sistema performed with Camerata Nova, and at the Valentine’s Day Special, Sistema shared the stage with the WSO. In March and April, Sistema students joined the WSO again as part of Adventures in Music. The well-attended Michael Nozick Family Spring Concert on May 8 featured the WSO joining Sistema students in their own North End community. To end the year with a bang, Sistema performed preconcert at Cavalia.

Sistema Winnipeg received visits from several esteemed conductors. The WSO’s Alexander Mickelthwate and Julian Pellicano led frequent rehearsals with Sistema ensembles. In addition, Alexander Shelley of the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Bramwell Tovey of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra both visited Sistema to work with our students.

At the end of the season, Sistema Winnipeg said farewell to several key staff who are starting new adventures. Thank you to Alexander Mickelthwate who has supported the program through its launch and growth. Thank you to Sistema Manager Shannon Darby, and divisional lead teachers Gisaya Gahungu and Erin Risbey, all of whom have worked with the program for several years. Good luck in your future endeavours!

The WSO is committed to creating exceptional musical experiences for Manitobans through a comprehensive array of education and community engagement programs and initiatives. In 2017-18, some key new initiatives helped WSO engage new communities and deepen connections with others, while WSO’s signature Education programs continued to thrive and uphold the highest standard of quality.

Over 32,000 students of all ages engaged with the WSO and deepened their connection to orchestral music through participation in one of WSO’s concerts, and hundreds of students received the incredible opportunity to perform on-stage with the WSO this year.

Education Programs

WSO’s commitment to connect with and engage students of all ages continued in 2017-18 with a broad series of signature education programs designed to engage and excite students of all ages with the WSO and live orchestral music.

The Bach to School program, comprised of ten ensemble groups from within the orchestra sections – string, woodwind, brass and percussion, visited more than 45 schools across Manitoba; reaching over 8,500 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Bach to School has a strong reach to many communities including rural, inner-city, junior high and high schools in Winnipeg and surrounding area and reinforces students’ engagement with WSO in preparation to or as a follow-up to their WSO concert experience.

Nursery Notes is an innovative program designed to reach pre-school aged children. A WSO string ensemble shared presentations in 8 different nursery schools across Winnipeg and connected over 150 children with music and instruments through interactive activities. The 2017-18 Nursery Notes program engaged children with the concept of emotions and how music can help them express and experience different emotions.

The Musical Discoveries program featured three performances for students in grades 1-3 and featured a beautiful presentation of an African folk story called The Twins and the

Monster set to a stunning score of folk-inspired music composed by Canadian composer John Estacio. This work was presented by Dandi Productions. WSO developed a bilingual, curriculum-based study guide that included comprehensive lesson plans to help teachers introduce and strengthen the children’s understanding of the music and to prepare them for their first live orchestra experience.

Adventures in Music, the WSO’s widest-reaching and most comprehensive education program, celebrated the world of music and dance though eight concerts titled Music in Motion which took place in March and April at Centennial Concert Hall, including one in French. Altogether, over 12,000 elementary school students, primarily in grades 4 – 6, attended and performed in this program. The concerts featured local student groups performing on stage with the WSO in dance ensembles, string ensembles and recorder ensembles as well as a wide-variet of local performers including Momentum Aerial, Romanetz

Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, Shelley Shearer School of

Dance and drum singer & hoop dancer duo Corey Campbell

and Melvin Starr, all showcasing a wide variety of dance styles for students to experience. WSO develops a comprehensive and bilingual study guide for this program as well, and this year’s guide was the result of a collaboration with Manitoba’s incredible community of early-years educators, comprising lessons written by several master teachers in a truly collaborative effort.

Prior to each Great-West Life Kids Concert, the WSO presents a full hour of pre-concert activities for children aged 4-9. These exciting activities, provided in partnership with Music for Young Children, engage children with interactive musical activities. WSO mascot Manny Tuba attends each concert, inviting children to learn about music, pose for pictures, and bring their friends. Highlights from this year’s season of GWL Kids Concerts include a new presentation by creative Winnipeg-based children’s entertainer Mr. Mark, as well as a unique collaboration with CBC radio personality Ismaila Alfa and Art City, an inner-city after-school art program for at-risk students who created stunning animations to augment the performance of Brother Heinrich’s Christmas. To close the season, Winnipeg’s Al Simmons presented a wonderful and zany performance for a nearly sold out house.

Student Matinees were expanded to seven concerts in 2017-18 and are a terrific opportunity for middle and high school

students to visit Centennial Concert Hall during the school day to experience the WSO in a more compact fashion. This year students from all across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, north west Ontario came to enjoy a 15-minute pre-concert chat presented by WSO Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano, followed by an introduction to the repertoire by the conductor, and a full performance of the work. Their experience concludes with an on-stage Q&A with the conductor, providing an opportunity for students to ask those burning questions about life as a musician and a conductor, about the orchestra and the music.

The full WSO toured to seven Winnipeg high schools in fall 2017, performing an interactive and engaging one-hour Up Close & Orchestral concert for nearly 4,500 students. Hosted by Alexander Mickelthwate, this program is designed to showcase the orchestra and inspire students to seek more live symphonic music, and includes several opportunities for students to participate directly in the concert as soloists and even as guest conductor of the WSO. Students were invited back to Centennial Concert Hall for WSO’s creative and dramatic presentation of Seven Deadly Sins.

Providing opportunities for emerging artists is an important part of WSO’s commitment to fostering the development of Canadian talent, and the 2017-18 Provincial Student Soloist Competition

winner was trumpeter Bradley Cairns Digel. Roberts is a student of WSO’s own Paul Jeffrey and received coaching from WSO Principal Trumpet Chris Fensom and performed as student soloist in the Up Close and Orchestral program at all seven high school concerts. Many of WSO’s past solo competition winners have gone on to develop successful careers as professional musicians.

WSO and the River East Transcona School Division continue their unique and exciting partnership to create a wonderful concert showcasing the incredible student talent from within the school division to a nearly sold-out audience. Over 600 choir students performed with the orchestra in three different choirs, plus a 200-voice elementary ensemble who performed a creative and visually stunning arrangement for early years choir and hand percussion. Student artwork was featured in on-stage projection as well as in an immersive art gallery throughout Centennial Concert Hall. Hosted and conducted by Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano, this multimedia and multi-disciplinary concert is the culmination of countless hours’ work with all 45 schools in the River East Transcona school division and is the hallmark of this special partnership.

In partnership with the Desautels Faculty of Music, the Mentorship program continued to bring WSO musicians to campus to mentor University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra musicians in their concert preparations and in their development as aspiring professional musicians. Mentors run sectionals and sit-in rehearsals to provide guidance and inspiration.

The Winnipeg New Music Festival (WNMF) creates a very special environment in which many of the world’s pre-eminent composers converge on Winnipeg for a short period of time. This is an incredible opportunity for young and emerging composers and musicians to interact with these cutting-edge composers and performers. The 2018 WNMF marked the 2nd year of WSO’s unique WNMF Composers Institute. The call for submissions was broadened to a national scale and brought six emerging Canadian composers, two from the east, two from Manitoba, and two from the west and northern provinces and territories to the festival for a week of seminars, masterclasses, lessons and a culminating

performance of their works by the WSO, led by Julian Pellicano. WSO Composer-In-Residence Harry Stafylakis led a series of panel discussions which were augmented by mentor composers Samy Moussa and Karen Sunabacka as well as participation from many of WNMF’s guest composers. This second year of the WNMF Composers Institute was a resounding success, and a natural extension and evolution of the WNMF and WSO’s commitment to developing emerging talent and the Canadian Orchestral Voice.

Community Engagement

WSO’s continued commitment to engage our community resulted in some new and wonderful opportunities in 2017-18.

WSO also had the opportunity to reach out to new audiences with performances in two unique venues, beginning with a special performance for patients, families and caregivers at Specialized Services for Children & Youth on Notre Dame Avenue and with a unique performance at local microbrewery and tap room Little Brown Jug.

Musicians in the Making provides young and emerging performers an important opportunity to perform prior to select WSO concerts on the Piano Nobile and other locations at Centennial Concert Hall and the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. A record number of performance opportunities were provided to young performers including young and advanced students from many teaching studios and institutions across Manitoba as well as school ensembles, emerging artists from the Winnipeg Youth Orchestras, Manitoba’s University music schools and even the nearly 100-piece Manitoba Band Association Christmas Tuba Festival performed, totalling over 500 individual performers.

The Musicians in Healthcare program offered musical presentations by a WSO string quartet at various healthcare

centres across Winnipeg. Through the performance of live music, this program promotes the health and healing of hospital patients, visitors and staff in the community.

The 2017 Manitoba Hydro Holiday Tour brought holiday cheer to thee rural Manitoba communities in December 2017: Steinbach, Portage la Prairie and Brandon. These sold-out or nearly sold-out concerts are highly popular and provide members of the local community the opportunity to perform with the WSO as narrator in the reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, as guest conductor, guest performers and in a sing-along of traditional carols. WSO’s continued commitment to homegrown talent featuring award-winning vocalist Elsaida Alerta.

Share the Music is a unique partnership with community organizations that enables economically disadvantaged children, their families and adults to attend WSO performances. Because of the generous donations by corporations and individuals, more than 3,400 tickets were provided across the province this season. The organizations distribute these tickets free-of-charge to people who want to experience the WSO but would not otherwise have the means to do so because of socio-economic barriers, physical or mental disability, newcomers to Canada, and many other parts of our community that experience barriers.

WSO Music Services continues to help WSO musicians connect with community organizations, private events and other opportunities. In 2017-18 a variety of events, private, corporate and public featured performances and collaborations with WSO musicians made possible by this unique service.

Providing opportunities for emerging artists remains a focus of the WSO, and in the 2017 Summer Season, WSO provided opportunities for a number of young and emerging artists as soloists with the Orchestra at the Lyric Theatre, in Kenora and at WSO’s Made in Manitoba concert. In addition to featuring the two top trophy winners from the 2017 Winnipeg Music Festival.

WSO remains committed to expanding its community impact and engaged in countless other initiatives and opportunities throughout 2017-18 including family events including the Teddy Bear’s Picnic, KidsFest, Manitoba Provincial Honour Choir and Honour Concert Bands, by providing guest-speakers at various events and institutions and interacting with educators at the St John’s Music reading sessions as well as the Manitoba Music Conference, to name a few.

Artistic & Community Partnerships

The orchestra continued to forge artistic connections with the community in several notable partnerships. The ongoing success of the WSO’s annual collaboration with the River East Transcona School Division was again in evidence for a well-attended November concert in the Concert Hall. Local students and teachers performed with the WSO in this program.

Partnering with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir within its series, the orchestra appeared in music by Fauré and Poulenc at St. Boniface Cathedral in March. Our ongoing partnership with Pembina Trails School Division featured their choirs at our annual Holiday Concert in December.

In partnership with the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg and begun in 2006, the WSO joined the WMC in the seventh biennial McLellan Competition for Solo Performance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, a prestigious competition open to talented Manitoba musicians.

The longstanding highly successful Virtuosi Concerts series continued its partnership with the WSO at the University of Winnipeg’s Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall. Baroque ensemble Canzona presented two stimulating programs in which WSO musicians played a major role.

Summer appearances found the WSO

performing at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park, The Forks on Canada Day and its annual appearance at Kenora’s dockside Lucia Melnick Stage. The orchestra’s annual Community Celebration concert featured, among other local soloists, young Manitoba music competition-winners on the thresholds of their careers.

The WSO continues to serve as the musical foundation for Manitoba Opera and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, bringing to their audiences the full symphonic resources their productions require.

Artistic & Community Partnerships

Once again, Winnipeg new music-lovers’ hearts and souls were warmed in the middle of our cold winter by the 2018 Winnipeg New Music Festival. This 27th Festival was curated by Alexander and Matthew Patton, joined by WSO composer-in-residence Harry Stafylakis, whose music was heard along with hosting programs and providing support to the composers present.

This year’s Festival was honored with the presence of Philip Glass, among the leading composers of today. Mr. Glass performed himself in addition to the presentation of his own music. Other composers featured were Michael Snow, Ellen Taafe Zwilich, Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, Cassandra Miller, Pascal Dusapin and Samy Moussa. The eminent JACK Quartet appeared both in recital and with the orchestra. Along with the panel discussions and composer events, a variety of offsite lunchtime concerts supplemented the Festival.
