PBS learningMedia Teacher Core Digital Summit – linda Miller, VP Programming

On March 14 & 15, PBS brought together, in Washington, D.C., twenty-five station Education representatives and twenty-eight exceptional teachers from around the country to participate in a two-day training session for a new project called PBS Teacher Core. Emily Dawson from East Peoria’s Riverview Grade School and I were lucky enough to be on the invitation list!We are all enthusiastic supporters of PBS LearningMedia, the free digital library of classroom-ready, curriculum targeted materials that range from video and audio clips to suggested interactive activities to valuable resources from libraries, government agencies and major universities.In concurrent sessions, we learned about the ever-evolving LearningMedia service, which now contains over 30,000 assets. We learned about a new content collection that supports struggling readers in grades 5-8 with 40 blended lessons for social studies, English language arts, math and science, that incorporates literacy strategies and vocabulary practice.We explored the practical applications of how to use LearningMedia with technology in the classroom from large group instruction on whiteboards to individualized use by students and small groups on tablets. The sessions were rich with variety and interaction and ulti-mately resulted in presentations by the teachers, highlighting their ability to use technology to its fullest.

After the sessions I asked Emily to share her thoughts. Here’s some of what she had to say…

eightmembersoftheTeacherCorewastomeetandparticipateinatwo-dayDigitalEducationSummitatPBSHeadquarters.Duringthissummitwewereequippedwiththetoolsandtrainingthatwillfurtherenhancestudentlearning.TeachersreviewedallaspectsofPBSLearningMedia™andwerechargedwithtak-ingtheresourcesbacktoourhomestatestoprovideteachertrainingandsupporttoourfellowteachers.Withthecurrentfinancialstateofmanyschooldistricts,weasteachersarelefttoforgethewayforourstudentstoensurethattheyarenotleftbehind.Withtextbooksandresourcesmanyyears(andoftenseveralgenerations)outofdateandtheeverchangingtrendsineducation,Ihaveoftenfounditdifficultformyclassroomtokeeppace.LikemanyteachersIhavebeenforcedtoseekout,andfrequentlypayfor,newerresourcesandrelevantprofessionaldevelopmentonmyown.Thatistosaynothingoftheaddedpressuretocontinuallyalignmylessons
