The Doctor is In!His diagnoses may be brilliant but his opinions are brash, his observations blunt and his bedside manner tactless at best. Somehow, though, Dr. Martin Ellingham (nicknamed Doc Martin, much to his discontent) has become WTVP audiences’ favorite practicing physician. So, to treat what ails you, we are inviting fans and newcomers alike to spend a whole day in surgery during a special Doc Martin Marathon, Saturday, Feb. 1 from noon to midnight.Starring Martin Clunes as the once-renowned London surgeon whose sudden phobia leaves him paralyzed at the sight of blood, Doc Martin takes a humorous, hearty glimpse into what happens when a gruff physician flees big-city life to work as a general doctor in his childhood home of Port Wenn, a sleepy, picturesque English coastline town. Cultures clash and the sparks fly in this catchy, funny comedy-drama mixing elements of classic British sitcoms with sharp medical drama and a quirky, lovable cast of characters.

Our marathon begins with Season 4 as Doc Martin continues to deal with the strange cases and stranger personalities of Port Wenn. He deals with the mysteri-ous illnesses and odd events that plague the town, including the strange death of a local sheep farmer, a paranoid and constipated school headmaster, a visitor with a rare genetic disease, and the unexpected pregnancy of a person very close

to the good doctor. We continue on with the first half of Season 5 which includes a hub-cap stealing intruder on a local farm, a culinary showdown during the town’s “Fun Day” and a resident who may be being slowly poisoned by her son. And along the way there’s love and broken hearts, new life and tragic deaths, career advancements and setbacks… oh, and a little thing called fatherhood.

Watch for special segments between the shows when you’ll have an op-portunity to pledge your support for future airings of Doc Martin. We’d love to acquire season 6 for you…and possibly renew our rights to earlier seasons. Currently, our rights expire on Feb. 15 after the conclusion of Season 5. Now that’s a bitter pill!

Sesame Street has partnered with Team USA to celebrate and support the athletes! Join us Feb. �-7 at 9 a.m. for a week of programs focused on games, sports and sportsmanship in-cluding three all-new episodes.

• curious George kicks off its eighth season on Monday Feb. �0 at 7 a.m. with three new episodes focused on engi-neering and technology.

• Feb. 17-�1 at 10 a.m. is “Daniel’s Big Feelings Week”, featuring five new episodes of Daniel tiger’s neighborhood. Daniel and his friends learn to cope with the feelings and emotions that come with being little kids in a big world such as jealousy, disappointment, and frustration.

• The pbS kIDS writers con-test is in full swing! Have you written your story yet? Kids in kindergarten through third grade are eligible to compete for great local and national prizes. Deadline to enter is March �1. Rule sheets, entry forms and writing resources are all available at wtvp.org.

This is the month we say farewell to several old friends.Downton abbey concludes a spectacular fourth season on Masterpiece, but I’m not spilling the beans on how. Sherlock fans will go into withdrawal albeit following some spectacular crime solving by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s master (consulting) detective. And closer to home, we bid Godspeed to our own Linda Miller, Vice President of Programming at WTVP, as she retires following more than 25 years of superb service. Thank you, Linda. You’re the best.

Doc Martin will also be going away following the February 15 broadcasts unless we can raise the $12,000 necessary to renew the rights. In his short time at WTVP, the good doctor and his menagerie of assorted Port Wennians have become like family for many of us. We look forward to their weekly visits and we hate to see them go. If you have not yet fractured your funny bone on this exceptional series where the doctor faints at the sight of blood, you will have one more chance…as well as the chance to help fund the renewal of our broadcast rights with the distributor. Here’s how.

on February 1 beginning at noon and continuing through midnight, WTVP will begin a Doc Martin Marathon starting with the first program from season four and continuing on through much of season 5. The final four programs in the series will be shown at their usual times (9 p.m. and 10 p.m.) on

February 8 and 15. The marathon will give you the opportunity to see your favorite characters—Louisa, Bert Large, Aunt Joan, and all the others—one more time with all their patented British looniness … or should we say humanness? So set your recorders and pledge your support so that we can continue to air Doc Martin and even acquire season six. This is perhaps the first time you will be able to say that you saved the doctor.

Born February 9, 1944, into a family of sharecroppers in rural Georgia, she came of age during the violent racism and seismic social changes of mid-20th-century America. Her mother, poverty and participation in the civil rights movement were the formative influences on her consciousness, becoming the inherent themes in her writing, and she continues to shine a light on global human rights issues. Her dramatic life is told with poetry and lyricism in american Masters “alice walker: beauty in truth” airing Friday, Feb. 7 from 8-9:�0 p.m. The film includes inter-views with Steven Spielberg, Danny Glover, Quincy Jones, Howard Zinn, Gloria Steinem, Sapphire and Walker herself.

Black history is American history and WTVP is pleased to highlight these other new specials to help celebrate the month:

On Monday, Feb. � from 9-11 p.m., pov “american promise” traces the experiences of an African-Ameri-can boy and his friend over 13 years at a prestigious private school in Brooklyn, New York.

Sting—broadway boundRock ‘n’ roll Renaissance man Sting has embarked on a new venture, The Last Ship, a musical play for which he has written original music and lyrics. Exploring a range of universal themes, The Last Ship dramatizes the impact of the demise of the ship-building industry in Sting’s home town of

Wallsend, England, which for so long had dominated and shaped the city’s community life.

In an exclusive performance recorded at New York City’s Public Theater, Great performances “Sting: The last Ship” captures Sting in an intimate concert of highlights from the show, provid-ing a narrative outline for the musical as well as revealing the au-tobiographical underpinnings for the songs. The program premieres Friday, Feb. �1 at 8 p.m.

Having grown up in the shadow of the Swan Hunter Shipyard, Sting was deeply affected by the subject, which inspired him to emerge from a decade-long absence from songwriting to produce over a dozen new songs for the Broadway- bound show, a collaboration with the Tony-winning duo of writer John Logan (Red, Skyfall screen-play) and director Joe Mantello (Wicked, Other Desert Cities).

Super Skyscrapers, a new four-part series airing wednesdays, Feb. 5-�6 from 9-10 p.m., follows the creation of four extraordinary buildings, showcasing how they will revolutionize the way we live, work and protect ourselves from potential threats.

The series begins with a journey of duty and national symbolism as it follows the final year of exterior construction on One World Trade Center, the 1,776-foot skyscraper built on Ground Zero. Major inno-vation and a radical rethinking of the traditional building model is up next with the Leadenhall Building, a tow-er constructed off-site then delivered to London to be stacked and bolted together. Then watch the rise of the Shanghai Tower, a veritable vertical city where a population the size of Monaco will work, rest and play in a footprint the size of a football field. Finally, follow the teams tasked with creating New York’s most luxurious residential skyscraper.

Through a new partnership with ICC, we are pleased to welcome Ken Burton’s TV Production class every Tuesday and Thursday for some real-world experience and training with our Production staff.

This month the Create schedule draws upon a total of 63 series, not including special Saturday and Sunday marathons which utilize additional programming resources. Before you settle in for “The Big Game” in that other sport… tune in to support the bradley women on Sunday, Feb. � at 1� noon, live from peoria, as they clash with the ladies of Illinois State. The teams meet up again on Thursday, Feb. �7 for a 7:�5 p.m. tip off, this time from Redbird Arena. Both games will air live on our WORLD Channel, WTVP 47.2. On air announcers are Danny Adams and Brian Bedo.
