FROM THE EDITOR

A happy New Year to you all – 2016 is going to be an exciting year, especially for the Cub Scout Section who are celebrating their centenary during the year. Several special events are being planned to make it a memorable occasion for our Cub Scouts, including a County camp at Tolmers and some new District events. There are also lots of useful ideas and information on the Scout Association website at www.cubs100.org. If you need electronic copies of any of the old photos published in “Bangers & Mash” please contact me. There has been a lot happening in Enfield Scouting in the last few months, including several camps, outdoor Christmas carols, a handicraft competition and Bridie Challenge for the Cubs, and Explorers visiting Big Ben. You can read all about these activities in this edition of “Bangers & Mash” The next edition of “Bangers and Mash” will be published at the end of April 2016. Please let me have your contributions by Sunday 17th April 2016. As always, I’m happy to receive contributions at any time – the earlier reports come in the better! Don’t forget that new e-mail address is now available for sending me reports – although the old one will still work.

FROM THE

DISTRICT COMMISSIONER 2016 already! I hope you all had a great New Year and are keeping your New Year resolutions. New Year Scouting started for me with a meeting with the County Commissioner setting targets for the year, followed a week later by a District Team meeting. As always we are looking to the future and the great things we can do. At the Team meeting District Youth Commissioner, Pippa Byrom, and I presented Roger Elkin with his certificate and badge for 50 years of service to Scouting. This is a truly outstanding commitment and I would like to congratulate and thank Roger for his continuing work for the young people of Enfield. 2016 is of course a big year for the Cub section and I know that Cub Leaders are already working on some great celebratory events and I feel sure we will soon be reading about them in “Bangers and Mash”. Many of you will already be aware that Ross Paybody, who has been on our District Cub Team for many years is now the Assistant County Commissioner for Cubs. One of his first tasks is to ensure that the County Cub Camp is a success and I hope that as many of our Cub Packs as possible will take part in that and support Ross.

4

Our new District Youth Commissioner is keen to get out and about so please do invite her along to anything you are organising. Pippa can be reached at [email protected]. Finally a big thank you to you all for everything you are doing for Scouting in Enfield. Best wishes.

Paul Symons (District Commissioner)

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 2015

As usual Remembrance Sunday was commemorated on 8th November 2015 with a parade in Edmonton in the morning and on Chase Green in Enfield in the afternoon, as well as at individual Group’s church parades. There was a good turn-out for these various parades.

“FARM TO FORK” PROJECT

The 10th Edmonton Beavers visited their local Tesco’s store, for the “Farm to Fork” project. The Beavers had a great time seeing, tasting different food, taking part in a quiz set by the store, at the end coming away with a badge, goodie bag, and more knowledge of how supermarkets work, and where the food we eat comes from. Many Thanks to Tesco’s.

3RD ENFIELD BEAVERS & CUBS

Two Beavers from the 3rd Enfield Colony, Alex and Matthew, attended the District JOTI (Jamboree on the Internet – Jamboree on the Air) at the Tristram Drive HQ in October 2015. This was part of a very large international Scouting event

The 3rd Enfield Beavers and Cubs also went to Pets at Home

CAROLS BY CAMPFIRE

Over 100 Beavers and Cubs were greeted by Father Christmas as they arrived for the annual “Carols by Campfire” event at the Turkey Street HQ on Friday 11th December 2015. There was also a large illuminated Christmas tree by the entrance to the HQ. The Beaver and Cubs then gathered round the roaring campfire to listen to the Christmas story and to sing carols and other Christmas songs led by John Bennett of the 28th Enfield. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a hot chocolate drink and biscuits before going home. This year the collection was items of food for the local Food Bank for needy families – and a very good quantity was collected. Thanks to John Bennett and all the other Leaders who made this such a successful evening.

18TH EDMONTON CUBS AND BEAVERS 2015 CHRISTMAS STOPOVER

We set off in the minibuses at 10.30am on a very blustery Saturday morning and headed for Southend. On arriving in Southend we realised what “windy” on Southend Seafront felt like! However, that did not stop us having an entertaining lunch – outside – and understanding the concept of “keeping hold” of your lunch. The Cubs and Beaver really enjoyed this outside “windy” dining.

After lunch we spent a great couple of hours in Sea Life where the staff were fantastic and we had some “interesting” question and answer sessions – especially about sharks!

10

From here we returned to the minibuses and made our way to Belchamps Scout camp site, Hockley, arriving at tea time. The camp site was decorated in typical Christmas Grotto mode and the Cubs and Beavers started to get really excited. After unpacking in our nice warm indoor accommodation, we went over to the main square for a camp fire and then went in to Father Christmas himself and to let him know our Christmas lists – some were unbelievably long! Belchamps then served us supper and then it was bedtime ready for an action packed activity day on Sunday. After our “Belchamps” breakfast on Sunday we worked our way through a stack of activities that were provided on site: mini crossbows, caving, assault course, bungee run, pedal karts, backwoods cooking, low level climbing wall, flatlining and more. In the middle of the day Belchamps served us a full Christmas Dinner, pudding and Christmas crackers.

11

We eventually packed up and set off for home around 3.30pm and needless to say it was a lot quieter on the way home! This is a fabulous stopover for Beavers and Cubs (and great value for money) and our subsequent slideshow to parents confirmed what a great time their children had that weekend – we will definitely be experiencing this one again in 2016 – we also had all our Sea Life tickets for our entire party donated making this trip even more excellent value for our children and parents.

CUB HANDICRAFT COMPETITION

The District Cub Handicraft Competition Was held on Saturday 14th November 2015 at the 10th Edmonton HQ, The theme this year is “100 years of Cub Scouting”. Including posters, birthday cards, clay models of Jungle Book characters, woggles and badge designs. There was also a Pack model depicting Cub camping past and present.

Our County Commissioner Jack Caine, assisted by County Chairman Steve Way, had the very difficult job of judging all the entries and deciding first, second and third place in each category. Thanks to them for doing this, and also thanks to the other Leaders who helped to organise the event – and to the 10th Edmonton for hosting it.

5th & 23rd ENFIELD CUB CAMP AT WELL END On the 19-21st November we did a Christmas camp with 5th and 23rd Enfield Packs at Well End campsite. After we arrived we met up with the 23rd Cubs and we put all our heavy bags into two bedrooms. There was 1 girls’ room and 3 boys’ rooms and a Leaders room. As I am a girl I slept with the girls in their room, there was Rebecca, Zeila, Molly, Gabi, Abigail, Bethany and Emily and me Leila. We all got on very well. I got on very well with Emily who became my best friend while there. After we unpacked out kit we went into the main hall to make paper chains. We went into four groups to see who could make the longest one. Martyn said his team won but I think it was our team - we made one measuring over 1 metre long. Afterwards we did we decorated a 1.62cm Christmas tree with lots of different ornaments which some of them were made by the Cubs. After we did that, we went on a walk around the camp site we all had a great time. We walked through the woods. It was very dark but we had our torches with us. After that we had supper - we had hot dogs and hot chocolate, it was very nice. After that we put on our PJs and all went to bed. Some of the boys were talking all night, but the Leaders said the girls where talking the most, so we did not get much sleep. On Saturday we swiftly woke up and got up to have a lovely breakfast of cereal and bacon sandwiches. After breakfast we saw our Christmas presents under the tree, but we were not allowed to open them. Instead we had some free time and explored the campsite, we found a small but great mini adventure park. Most of the boys played football on the large field nearby. Me and my friends explored further into the forest with the towering trees that loomed above us, and also found a big lake which smelled a lot.

18

After that we went back to the hall to make Christmas cards for a member in our household. Furthermore it was a competition. After that we made for Christmas decorations, while Andy and Yvonne judged the Christmas cards. Rebecca won the prize, which was teddy and a frozen cut-up set. After that we all opened our Christmas presents. I had some pink ear muffs. After that we had lunch which was chicken burgers (lovely), and after that we had further free time and we made more art stuff. After that we took off our muddy shoes and got ready for Christmas dinner - we had turkey, parsnips, potatoes, carrots peas plus lots more exciting stuff. Then we had mince pies and ice creams it was all very nice.

19

After dinner we then did indoor rock climbing some of the Cubs did it without falling off. After that we went back inside to watch a movie called Santa 2. We had an interval with hot chocolate and biscuits (yum yum), then we watched the rest of the film which was very good. Then consequently we all went to bed straight to sleep zzzzzzz... The next morning we slowly woke up and got dressed and a lovely breakfast of waffles, sausage and beans. After that we did shooting at targets - it was very hard. After we tidied up our rooms and put our sleeping bags back into the bags. After that we went to the shop and bought sweets and some useful stuff. Then we had lunch we had sandwiches crisps and cakes. Then we all went home we all had a lovely time and we all would like to thank everyone that helped.

CRATE EXPECTATIONS

On Saturday 16th January our Group Scout Leader (Peter) organised a team building exercise for the Young Leaders in the 29th Enfield Scout Troup. The aim of this was to grow closer as a Group but at the same time it was also a little treat for us.

We started off the day by having breakfast at McDonalds which was kindly paid for by Peter. After this we went to Gilwell Park which is luckily only a 15-20 minutes’ drive from us. All together there were about 6 of us Young Leaders plus our Assistant Beaver Scout Leader, Claire and Peter. When we got there we went straight to the activity area where we found we were booked to do crate stacking! Although it looks very easy it does require a lot of team work and communication in order to succeed.

23

I believe that by doing this activity we grew closer as a group and I would definitely recommend it to any other people who are interested and you can also see a video of it on YouTube.

https://youtu.be/TkpIQ5z9nZM We would just like to take this time to thank Peter for organizing this as we really enjoyed ourselves.

VISIT TO BIG BEN

On the 22nd December, Gough Park Explorer Unit were lucky enough to go on a tour up the Elizabeth Tower in Westminster, more commonly known as ‘Big Ben’.

Portcullis House was the starting point, where the Explorers and their Leaders had to go through strict security checks; from there they headed along an underground tunnel to the bottom of the tower. Ahead of them stood 334 stone spiral steps, you need a good head for heights as you can look straight up or down the middle of these steps.

About 120 steps in to the tour, the Explorers learnt about the building of the tower and how the bell was transported to London. The bell now in the tower is not the original one, the first one was made in Newcastle and transported to London by boat, down the coast and up the Thames, and it weighed 16 tonnes. Unfortunately, after being paraded around London, it fell from the

25

carriage and broke. A new one was made which is the bell now in place, it has been there for 150 years & weighs only 13 ½ tonnes. Big Ben was put up the tower in the days before hydraulic cranes & had to be done manually with ropes & pulleys. It took a very large team of workmen 36 hours continuous to get it up the tower, it had to be done in one go without stopping. Around ‘Big Ben’ up the tower are 4 smaller bells that toll every 15 minutes, with the main bell striking on the hour, this is the most famous ‘bong’ in the world and is used by many countries. The clock motor is driven by a pendulum which is weighted to swing every 2 seconds, but if that needs to be adjusted, old pennies are used by placing them on the pendulum. A funny thing to imagine in these days of technology! The Explorers were at the top of the tower for the 5 o’clock chime and when Big Ben strikes, the whole tower vibrates. Inside one of the famous clock faces

26

After the long walk down, the Explorers thought that their tour had finished, but their guide had a couple of surprises in store. Firstly they were given a tour of the House of Commons and an explanation of how the MP’s vote on things, a fairly complex way… and we thought they just stood there shouting at each other.

Outside the House of Commons One more surprise awaited them, after firstly being denied access to the House of Lords because it had been locked up, a very kindly Policeman opened it especially for the Explorers so they could have a brief look around. Did you know that the seats in the House of Lords have small speakers in the middle of them!! So all of you that thought that when the Lords& Ladies are slumped over in their seats seemingly asleep, they may be listening to the speakers, ahem

27

Due to security reasons we weren’t allowed to take photos in certain places, but below are a couple of other photos from the trip. In the Great Hall at Westminster.

CHIEF SCOUTS GOLD WARDS

This year's highly acclaimed London Pantomimers’ production of "Cinderella" resulted in a few extra bonuses. Four members of the cast were awarded their Chief Scout's Gold Award with surprise presentations during the run of eleven performances.

Here they are on stage straight after one of the shows, from left to right: Imogen, Melanie, Sophie and Rachel, all aged 14. Imogen, Melanie and Rachel were all Scouts at 4th Enfield prior to moving on to Bush Hill Park Explorer Scout Unit.

MAUREEN HOLLIDAY - GONE HOME

It is with much sadness that we learnt of the death of Maureen Holliday in December.

Maureen started at the 5th Enfield 40 years ago as a helper. She went on to run the Cub Pack, Scout Troop and then the Group as GSL. Maureen regularly brought the 5th Enfield Cub Pack to District camps; she very much enjoyed camping. Maureen helped her husband Dave to organise BMX cross-country cycle events for the Cubs in the District. Maureen together with her husband Dave, dedicated many years of service to Scouting in Enfield.

Maureen was very proud to see he granddaughter, Sam Roust, complete her Queen’s Scout Award recently, and had looked forward to travelling to Windsor next year. Maureen lost her battle with cancer in December and will be sadly missed by family and friends alike.

A memorial service for Maureen was held in St. Mark’s church, Bush Hill Park, on Wednesday 13th January and was very well attended by her Scouting friends.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

CUB SCOUTING IN THE 1950s

With the centenary of Cub Scouting this year we are continuing our series publishing some of the material from the District archives about the history of Cub Scouting in Enfield & Edmonton. This time we look at the 1950s.

In April 1955 Enfield held its St. George’s Day parade in Enfield Town Park. Here Miss Lillian Searle is leading the 6th Enfield Cub Pack. The Cub on the front left is Alan Garner’s brother. Your editor is further back.

In 1959 a major event was held at Harringay Stadium to “Meet the Chief Scout” who was then Lord Rowallan. (Lord Maclean became Chief Scout in September 1959). The Cub Section put on a circus display. Enfield Cubs and Scouts went by special steam train from Enfield Town via the old low level station at Lower Edmonton (the track is now a footpath).
