My name is Drazen Sudic. I’m the President of Commission of School Rowing in Croatian Rowing Federation

I was born in 1957. in Osijek, Cro. I row since 1970.Best results: 5. place on Junior World Ch. 1975 in 2xWinner of International Bled Regatta and 4 time winner on National Championships ( 2x, 4x & 8+). Last 10 years master rower. Involved in School rowing and rowing for beginners in Rowing Club Mladost ( www.mladost.hr)

I live in Zagreb and work on IBM mainframe as a system engineer. I have two sons and they are rowers too. Rowing is my hobby and my live style.

1000 years Croats row and sail for living on sea and rivers.

100 years of sport rowing in Zadar, Pula, Osijek, Zagreb, Split.

200x. Croatian rowers are in A finals on JWRC and WRC.

800 rowers in 40 rowing clubs, including students and masters.

Additional 300 to 400 every year are involved in school rowing.


WRC 1999. St. Catherine 2- bronze (Saraga & Martinov)

was addittional motivation for training. They won at:

Olympic G. 2000. Sidney 8+ bronze. Croatia has won only 2 medals on O. Games 2000.Rowing has become well known and popular sport.

Extra motivation for girls, boys and their parents:With medallists Saraga, Smoljanovic, Skelin brothers

* taking a pictures at schools and in clubs * training in same clubs, in their old boats


Price of rowing equipment in Croatia is too high

On JWC we row in 5 – 7 years old boats.

On Croatian Championships till 20 years.

On School Championships till 30 years. Budget for National Team and all 40 rowing clubs is less than 10 million Euros per year.


CRO participated with W2-,1x and 4x on WRC 2010 in NZL

Most Clubs only have interest in perspective rowers.

Selection in RC is at age from 13 to 15. To early!

School Championships includes 400-700 girls and boys.

Only 1 from 100 school rower will row in National Team.

Our goal is to involve half of remaining 99 in rowing.


Depending on available boats to School Championships: Disc. 1x, 2x and 4x+ and teams on ergometers.

Through winter only competition on ergometers is available.

School Ch. in boats on lakes and rivers is possible from May.

Final School Championships is after eliminations in 5 regions:

Central, East, North, West and South Croatia.

The best junior rowers participate on many races through year.

Rowing in Croatia is organised in 40 rowing clubs.

Croatia has about 700 primary schools, ages under 15.

More than 150 have good connections with clubs.

Small cities and their schools live for Championships:Medulin, Jelsa, Oroslavje, Ogulin...

Way to motivate and establish rowing in small cities.


Involving parents in organisation. Pro et contra.

Including girls and boys from other sports.

Less girls are involved in rowing than boys.

One girl rows in Croatia on 5 to 7 boys.

Our goal: at least 1 girl to 3 boy in next 10 years.

Better with new ideas from The Conference.


2003. at final School Championship was 300 girls and boys.

Categorie: A till 8th grade, B till 6th grade.Discipline 1x, 2x and 4x+.

Problems with boats, groups, wind, ...

We have established pyramid: school- town- region- final. Final primary schools, only A, with 70 to 80 comp.

We decided to go with ergs. and mixed 2x crews.

Mixed 2x will in future become only 4x+.

Rowing Clubs for School championships give all logistic:

trainers, boats, oars and ergs. Different interests of clubs.

The best: establish rowing in schools for new rowers.

Schools find rowing hard and difficult, but very important.


Logistic for School Champ. - strictly linked to rowing clubs,

Ministry of Education & Sport and Rowing Federation.

I'm the president of Commission for school rowing.

We don’t have our own boats and rowing machines ( ergs).

All other resources are very limited too.

About 20 our rowing clubs participate in school rowing.

At the and, for the sake of kids, parents must pay the bill!

Trieste 10.12.2010. SCHOOL ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CROATIA

Our goal is to complete 7 or more boats 4x+ for beginners.

Mission impossible is to get boats for our regattas.

Temporarily categories: 1x-school boat and 2x-racing boat+ competition on ergs for mixed teams.

Each school team has 4 to 7 rowers with at least 1 girl.

Primary school - row for 4 minutes, secondary - 5 minutes.

In Croatia we have 700 primary schools, ages: 6 to 15.

Rowing clubs are interested in novice rowers, ages: 10 to 14.

Experienced rowers at age 13 to 16 already compete on regattas in Italy, Austria, Slovenia.

Only few successful transfers from other sports in ages of 15.

Ending primary school is often the time for leaving clubs.

No interest in Clubs for rowing in secondary schools.

Without logistic no way to have Secon. School Champ.

SCHOOL ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CROATIA Trieste 10.12.2010.

2 levels of competition for primary school:

A for age 13 -15. On regional levels B for age 11–13.

Competition is in boats and on the rowing simulator (4min).

I'm not fond of C2 rowing machines for kids. I consider better solutions RowPerfect or at least C2 on sliders.

Hope to have opportunity to complete 10 pairs of sliders:Competitions on 2x mix and 4x mix will be on slides. It will be the big improvement for future rowing in Croatia. Not only power will be interesting in selecting rowers .Rowing mix 4x+ will be the best solution.


4 groups of schools participating in rowing

I 10% of them are already involved in rowing. II Next 10% has only few rowers through years. III 10%-20 % - no rowers through years, but they could. IV about 60% - 70 % has no opportunity to row .... .

Clubs involved in school rowing help us in our goal:

To do our best for I, II and III. To make higher % in I and II.

Why? Some of them will one day win a medal on JWRC.


SECONDARY SCHOOL and UNIVERSITY

gap between novice and old rowers in secondary school.

Clubs - no motivation for novice over 15 years.

Organisation problems: Boats, trainers, scheduling,

Rowers - no time for school championship.

Schools – additional benefits


On Universities the girls are once again invited to row.They come happily. On our University rowing Championships regularly we have from 7 to 12 women crews in 8+. Less than 20 women row on our National Championships.

I hope to find the answer on the Conference: why they did not come at primary school? Or stay longer? Patriarchate is the problem? Or organisation in clubs? Half of our clubs don't have the same view for girls and for boys in rowing. We have to change these view.
