MUSIC WITH A MESSAGE MEMORY

In the leaflet this is what we offered. On the following pages we have collected the activities and ideas.Enjoy !

Explore your imagination, discover ways of inspiring others

For musicians, teachers, youth workers, composers and anyone wanting to use music in their work

Practical, creative, wholly participatory

Bring instruments and an open mindNon-European instruments and players are particularly welcome

This weekend will consider

Making songs – simple techniques for lyrics, melodies and accompaniment

Storytelling through music – traditional and modern contexts

Songs, Games and Grooves – how to make them relevant in your work

Working with Global Link we will explore global issues such as social justice, conflict resolution and sustainable development and use fun and participatory activities to reflect on how we work with world music styles and cultural representations that avoids stereotyping and clichés.

Knowledge and experience gained in sessions will be useful to your workshop and education practice whether you work in schools or across the community.

It's for you whatever your level of experienceIt's for you if you want to compose and inventIt's for you if you want to learn more about leading workshops

Grow in confidence

In China it is the flute – and so a story was told and a song was sung.

‘Autumn Thought’ – a classical tune.

Asking the question – what is classical music in your culture ?

We learnt a song in Mandarin and were asked to each create a song title.

This is the list of song commissions

Leon and Gisela’s workshop: exploring the global dimension through music

Both workshops started with a discussion of the 8 key concepts of the global dimension, using the global dimension pie chart and a series of ‘quotes’ as the stimulus. In the first group there was some discussion about how to encourage people to see the relevance of global issues to their lives; we discussed the importance of linking the global to the local and personal eg linking global conflicts with conflicts in the playground etc. There was also some discussion about how to get people to ‘care’, develop empathy; the importance of personal story, and relationships through linking/pen pals were highlighted eg. Leon’s work linking young people in Manchester with young people in Brazil.

In the second group there was some discussion about HOW to bring the global dimension into the wider opportunities programme; again using music from around the world is a way to do this, and include some background information about where the tune/song comes from, its origin, country etc.

In both workshops the group created a song (above), using one of the global dimension quotes as a stimulus.

In the first workshop the quote ‘Live simply so that others can simply live’ (Gandhi) was used, with Sam (participant) coming up with the words & tune, while the other participants created the music. In the second workshop the group used the quote ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.’ (Margaret Mead); Akiel and Gisela created some lyrics which were combined into a song (above).

Games and storytelling - Yue / Ben

We started each session by learning a traditional chinese melody with Yue.First group played Dancing and Singing in the Village by ear, second group played Parmir Mountain with dots. We made an arrangement for both exploring different textures as well as backing figures, improvised solos…..

We then looked at group composition games and processes from Hugh Nankivell, Dangerous Volume and Makoto Nomura

Both groups looked at Dancing Mole - a short and longer line notation method – and made vastly different arrangements

The first group made a very expressive Shogi score

The second group looked at Secret Partners improvising game (Stephen Grew) and also No Notes (Makoto Nomura)

Songs - Tea / PeteIn the first session we learnt and sang in 7/8

LYRIC ATTACHED

In the second session the song was in 9/8

The discussions in both sessions were about why we would consider teaching songs in different time schemes and what this does to us and our groups.

“turns the head roundOpens new spaceChallenges perceptionsMore things to play withGood to challenge yourselfThink outside the boxEasy to fall into clichésFried the brain with the different feelShared learning takes us all to a common place”

We also asked what else we could do and how it might feel

Teach a scale or a modeLearn a new instrumentLanguage

Second morning session

Harmony Vocals – TeaThis was traditional Dalmatian (Croatian) song. Learnt the original tunes, very simple. They were then following the harmonies that were taught.

Amazed how anxious people are at opening voices in harmony.Opens up the question of harmony and getting in right or getting it wrong.

Developing an idea – Ben / GiselaWe started looking at redoing the “compose a long rhythm melody” exercise from yesterday but using themes that link to the Global Dimension. Gisela mentioned that the random way of coming up with one lyric per person Didn’t lead to a very meaningful phrase so we decided to discuss the issuesAnd see if that led to any interesting lines.

Sue suggested that we look at fracking so we discussed what that means andthe positive and negative effects it has. I captured some of what people weresaying on the whiteboard and we used these four lines as the starting point forour rhythm.

B Breaking up the earth Poisoning the water Seismic effects But there’s energy in there!

We then looked at picking out words that would give us interesting rhythms to

MUSIC WITH A MESSAGE – MEMORY – THE HOTHOUSE – FEB 2013

Page 12: Web viewWriting a long rhythmic figure from a random word phrase. Afternoon session. Street scene beat. ... Santeria Tradition) / Orixa (Brazil – Candomble Tradition)

build up a long rhythmic sentence but were drawn towards one particular phrase and the idea of using it as a riff:seismic effects

We found notes for this by choosing a mode (which would suit the instruments we had – alto sax, fiddle, uke, guitar) giving each note a number and rolling an imaginary dice to come up with a melodic line.

So using CDE GAC (C major pentatonic) and numbering them 1 – 6 we We ended up with CEGA We tried the words over this riff and Bernie eventually came up with some Chords – a bluesy C to A- over which we set the words

A What’s happening? Wake up, wake up Stop and think This is no way to go

Because the song (which we’d now decided to write) needed achallenging/questioning elementWe then worked up an arrangement

AA Riff BB A/B together Stop and think

We then took the B section words and squeezed a bit more detail from eachline which gave us a second verse

Drilling through the rockSeeping through the well wallDistant earthquakeTotal devastation

At some point in trying the arrangement out we Lis added a swooping Glissando which gave us a third element to the piece

Final arrangement (altered in performance)

AA Riff BB Vs 1A/B together Stop and think (rpt)BB Vs 2A/B together (both verses)GlissandoStop and think x 1

Groups are complex animalsEach has a character that is more than the sum of the individuals in it Over time they develop and change; expressing anxiety, curiosity, establishing norms, engaging with the task, completing it and ending the groupTake a moment to step back and see your group as one single organismWhat colour or shape would it be? Or what sort of animal! It’s more obvious to notice how individuals are being—quiet, mischievous, and so on. Then there are the interpersonal dynamics too: ‘those two seem to set each other off, these two seem to be getting on very well’Remember all the time you are working things are going simultaneously at three different levels: individual, interpersonal and group

Songwriting projects – Pete / GiselaThe aim of this session was to share methods of making songs in groups within the context of the Global Development themes

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Song from Impro on the Samshen

I said sorryShe said is that the best you can doYesIt’s not my faultShe turned on her heel and walked away to Morecambe BayLong Black DressBlonde hairA scar on her faceI said sorry, I won’t do it againIt IS my fault, let’s talkShe looked around, she looked around, she looked around.

The discussion after the making of the song was about the role of the leader.People said..Keeping people involvedGiving melody

Motivating with questionsGiving space to thinkKeeping it relevant and personal

Collected verse and melody

Creating a safe spaceBeing diplomatic and open mindedGetting people to understand each otherMediating, CalmNot taking sidesIt happened to me

We made the words by asking everyone to think of a situation where they had been the person trying to sort out a conflict. To imagine the space and their role within it. Then a specific phrase was gathered from almost everyone that expressed their role. Gisela asked that we considered ‘ hearing’ as an extra concept. We then discussed HOW to democratically turn that into a melody. Pete suggested 3 methods1. To look at the speech inflection and turn that into a shape and then a melody.2. To ask for numbers and turn those into bar chords that created a sequence3. To repeat a phrase over and over until it was sung

INTERDEPENDENCE

Not self sufficientTrade – buying off each otherThere’s a knock on effectTrade – buying off each otherWe’re in it togetherIt’s going round

No man is an island, welcome to pie landNo womans a forest, no flower, no floristNo child’s a stream, strength in a teamNo parents an ocean, there’s a fine notionIt’s going round

To make the lyric we asked for people to think of their own lives and to give a few phrases. Then in response to the ‘no man’ line we developed A LIST… that was simple and rhyme based. The song developed as a reggae tune (on request) and with chords contributed by 2 people. A final suggestion was to share the lyric as a hocket to symbolise the ‘interdependence’ !

WIKIPEDIA“In music, hocket is the rhythmic linear technique using the alternation of notes, pitches, or chords. In medieval practice of hocket, a single melody is shared between two (or occasionally more) voices such that alternately one voice sounds while the other rests.”

Chinese flute and percussion – Yue / LeonA small group making a piece inspired by a horse gallop.

A small group making a piece inspired by a horse gallop. Looked at how simple Chinese melody’s can work along side percussion fro other tradition. Took a south Asian percussive phrase and used this rhythm to provide the foundations for a melody. Interesting time signature. Learnt simple Asian ‘Bols’ to learn the rhythm. REFLECTIONWe sat and spent 45 minutes with everyone sharing their thoughts and reflections on the 2 days.

PETE : In Brazil we spend the last 2 hours of a workshop discussing what we’ve done; it made me realise that the talking/reflection is so important and needs time.

PEOPLE COMMENTS

Enjoyed meeting new people, and seeing what happens eg having a go on the double bass, and then joining in the piece. Enjoyed playing music with people

Good for networking; the start of lots of projects, meeting people to develop projects with in Manchester. Also gave him a kick up the arse to develop his own music.

Reminded him of the freedom and opportunities there are outside the Music Service; the Music Service is tied into the education system, and the weekend reminded him that there are lots of other opportunities, and that sometimes the Service gets in the way of education. The constraints on the Music Service might open up new opportunities.

Regretted missing yesterday. Got into the drumming. Enjoyed the songwriting workshops. Hasn’t really taught young children; has learnt more about getting audiences focussed, working with young children. Learnt aobut different techniques for creating songs.

Had a gas. Nice to meet new people. Enjoyed trying things she would not normally do. Will bring back some activities to use with her PPA children, even if it’s sometimes chaotic. Eg trying a chinese piece or a Cuban piece.

The course was out of her comfort zone which is why she signed up for it. Works for the Music Service. Training used to be hands-on, but now like a day of mourning. The course has re-inspired.

She was also outside of her comfort zone. Very pleased with the fracking song, which she’d like to take with her. Enjoyed the cooking, too!

It’s been a special couple of days, met new people, had new experiences, made new friends. Boosted her confidence vis a vis being a workshop leader. Been interesting being with interesting and creative people.

YUE: Finds that each time he comes here – after having known Pete a long time – he learns more from Pete. He has learnt so much from everyone, but wishes he could have learnt more about everyone else. Hopes that he will meet everyone again and hear more from you.

Valuable getting out of his comfort zone, looking at world music, getting out of his singer-songwriter box, thinking about rythmn in different ways.

Signed up for a good weekend out. Inspired by the new instrument he played, and wants to buy it. Found there is a different way of teaching in the UK to in Africa; learnt a lot about how to run workshops/activities in the UK.

Her weekend ‘off’ has failed. Her head is buzzing, from meeting all these people, all these new ideas, coming up with her own compositions. Will take a lot away.

Perfect weekend – passionate about Balkans music, meeting Tea. Enjoyed the way there were lots of different workshops, different activities, great food.

People in Lancaster were welcoming. Enjoyed seeing musicians leave from the workshop and go to Lancaster and do their thing. The musicians in the pub had their set going, but welcomed the new musicians. Enjoyed the window view of how musicians work. Leon talked about ‘intention’. Will take away the thought of ‘intention’, and will take away the ‘bungalow’ activity. Will use his body as his instrument.

Thought it would be a pretentious weekend. If she hadn’t liked it, she would have walked off, being ‘undisciplined.’ Learnt a lot more than she thought she would learn, enjoyed most of it. Been a pleasure meeting people – enjoyed the new connections, meeting new Mancunians. Mentally shattered by the end of the first day, wanted to absorb it at home in the guesthouse. Has lots of material buzzing around that she will work with.

Surprised that the course is ending. It’s not really ending. She has gained so much, that it will feed her for a long while.

Enjoyed the vibes as much as anything; getting involved in the workshops. Learnt what he has needed to learn. Enjoyed everyone’s open-ness, egolessness, soaking up stuff. Hopes to keep some of the networking going; hopes to keep in touch. Synchronicity of meeting people again – keep these events going. Not just fun, but practical and useful. Good to think about getting our culture back, in the face of the mainstream.

Been great to be in such a creative environment, inspiring to be an environment full of creative energy.

Add ‘support’ to positive learning environment.

Pete will produce a ‘memory’ of the weekend with all of the song lyrics, and a drop box folder with all the tunes and recordings on. Will share email addresses. Tea will give Pete MP3 files of all the songs she brought.
