Founded by Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer in New York City, the Wittnauer Watch Co. became a true watch company in 1880, when the brand was "officially" introduced. Albert, along with his brother Louis (and later Emile) imported complete watches or just mechanisms from its Geneva, Switzerland factory.
In 1889 the company ran its very first advertisement. Appearing in the 20th anniversary issue of the Jewelers' Weekly, the ad notes that the company sold both "plain and complicated" watches, suggesting that it was a source for chronographs and repeating watches. By the 20th century they were firmly established as providing watches, chronometers and military timing devices to the military, famed early explorers and the general public, and are on record for producing the first waterproof watch called the "All Proof" in 1918. Long associated with the Longines Watch Co. via a U.S. partnership the firm is now owned by Bulova, once a great competitor.
I am happy to offer for sale the following men's vintage Wittnauer watch, a truly harder to find Concentric Calendar model that dates to the early 1950s (ca 1950 - 1953). Folks, I had never seen this model until this year and was actually fortunate to get two of them, the first sold on eBay a few months ago. This original double date watch has a unique “quickset” day of the month where you press the crown “IN” to advance the calendar hand one day, hence why the crown naturally sits out from the case a wee bit.
Triple-signed for Wittnauer, its 10kt Yellow Gold filled case measures 39.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 33.5mm in width (35mm with crown). In inches this works out to be 1-9/16” long by 1-5/16” wide, not including the winding crown. My valued watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel, 10SC caliber mechanism, ensuring its winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, a few tiny specks only and guaranteed to be untouched since it left the factory. It features a blue 31 day outer chapter, raised gold hour markers and numerals, original gold metal Dauphine-style hands with luminous fill, a semi-quickset day of the week window adjacent to the 3, a blue steel date pointer hand (quickset by pressing the crown “IN”) and a separate seconds dial with engine-turned background and ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed WITTNAUER

CALENDAR below the 12 and SWISS at the base of the dial, hard to see with the curvature of the crystal.
Speaking of the crystal, it is a domed acrylic example in excellent, clear condition. The case is 10 Karat Yellow Gold Filled and in excellent overall condition, a few small scratches on the bezel but NO wear or engravings, very nice. I particularly like the lugs on this one, stepped and incised in the Art Deco style.
The original unmarked winding crown, yellow gold finished, is in excellent condition and operates smoothly.
This crown is also used to advance the Day of the Month blue steel pointer hand and you press the crown IN once for each day you want to advance. Once you get to the numerical date you want you can then change the Day of the Week calendar in a semi-quickset fashion by advancing the hands past midnight and then back before 9pm and repeat this action for each day you want to advance. I always set the day of the month to a day before what I actually want and then the day of the week to the day before as well. This way I can advance the last day manually and know I’m on the right 12 hour cycle and not have the date switch over at NOON instead of midnight.
Turning the watch over I see that the screw-down back lid is in excellent PLUS condition, no marks or engravings – simply stamped “10K Gold Filled.” Peeking inside I find there is an inner dust cover that protects the mechanism from dust and debris, a very nice feature. Lifting this second lid reveals a clean and original Wittnauer mechanism, a 10 SC caliber that is signed Wittnauer Watch Co., Inc., Seventeen 17 Jewels, AXA Swiss. The inside case lid is signed Wittnauer – New York, Geneva, Montreal – Star W.C. Co. – 10K Gold Filled [Model] 2093 with case number below.
This timepiece has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new 17mmbrown alligator (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold buckle. Folks, I have been collecting watches for over 25 years and selling on eBay for close to 15 and it wasn’t until this year that I came across this model – a very cool looking, scarce vintage Wittnauer.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. My longtime favorite U.S. watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American enterprise established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Elgin, Illinois (the factory had a National Street address). It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago, and the Elgin factory would become the focal point of the town.
Elgin would offer its first watch for sale in 1867, marking the beginning

Page 5: holben/Descriptions/September 3... · Web viewThe inside of the case lid is signed Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co., Star W ... Known for its waterproof “Compressor

of fierce competition with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame. Bartlett and Currier would later join the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the firm, a seldom seen men’s Lord Elgin “Durabalance” Model 2242 that dates to the late 1950s and in excellent, original condition, including its original stainless expansion bracelet and original Lord Elgin 23 Jewels display case. This flagship model (as Lord Elgin denotes) is Solid Stainless Steel and was made entirely in the USA, its one-piece hermetic case highly unusual for Elgin and more in line with what Hamilton and Gruen were offering during this period.
Its unique durabalance mechanism was one of Elgin’s last crowning achievements, the 23 jewel Grade 750, adjusted to Six (6) positions – what could be considered chronometer grade. What makes this movement special is its “free sprung” (dura) balance that dispensed with the conventional regulator pins found in most mechanical movements. The only other movement, Swiss or American, that comes close is Patek-Philippe’s “Gyromax” balance of the same period.
Triple-signed, it measures 37mm lug tip to lug tip and 30mm in width (32.5mm with original unmarked winding crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-1/2 inches in length by 1-3/16 inches in width, not including the crown – a smaller “3/4 Size” men’s watch that is equally suited to a woman’s wrist. My skilled watchmaker David has fully serviced its Twenty Three jewel mechanism, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original, untouched silver, satin enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – guaranteed untouched since it left the factory over 50 years ago. This is a “dress” style dial where elegance is a priority with minimal clutter – very mid century modern. It features raised silver faceted hour markers, original silver steel Dauphine-style hands and a ‘sweep’ original silver seconds hand. Signed LORD ELGIN below the 12 with the Durabalance logo and 23 JEWELS above the 6.
The acrylic crystal is in excellent condition with no flaws. The one-piece hermetic style case is all stainless steel and in excellent condition, truly pristine. The original steel winding crown, umarked, is in excellent order as well, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch

over I see that the back of the case is in excellent shape, free of any personal engravings or wear. It is stamped Durapower – Waterproof – Resistant to Shock, Dust and Magnetism – Elgin Stainless Steel with case number S105284. Like any vintage watch of this age I would not suggest you get it wet.
As this is a one-piece case I first needed to remove the crystal and then the stem/crown (stem is two-piece) to access the mechanism. It is signed ELGIN 23 JEWELS, 6 ADJ – USA, 750. The inside of the case lid is signed Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co., Star W.C. Co., Stainless Steel [Model] 2242.
This watch has been fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. This watch comes with its original “Stonewall, U.S.A.” stainless steel expansion strap in excellent order, shown on the watch in some photos to see what it looks like. I am also including a new 16mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching chrome steel buckle, in case you prefer a leather strap or want to preserve the original expansion band. It also comes with its original acrylic hinged display case – in excellent condition. It has the Lord Elgin coat of arms (in three dimensional form) on the outside lid and is signed “Lord Elgin Twenty Three Jewels” on the inside. All in all a midcentury “Retro Modern” all American wristwatch that is as original (and pristine) as they come – a rare bird to boot!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. What a unique, one-of-a-kind case and dial on this watch – I have only seen this model ONCE in 25 years of collecting watches. Or, in other words, this isn’t your father’s Bulova!
I’ve always loved Bulova, an American company of great repute. It was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B – U – L – O – V – A … 8:00 pm, Bulova Watch Time.”
I am very pleased to offer for sale the following vintage, self-winding timepiece from the Bulova firm, an incredibly styled, Mid-Century Modern automatic wind model that dates to 1959 and is in excellent original condition inside and out. I have seen and sold just about every imaginable Bulova automatic watch from the 1950s and 1960s but have only seen this scalloped bezel, fancy hour marker

model ONCE before – what a beautiful timepiece.
This quadruple-signed wristwatch measures 41mm lug tip to lug tip and 34.5mm in width (36.5mm with gold Bulova-signed winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-5/8” long by 1-3/8” wide, not counting the original Bulova crown. Its original 17 jewel, self-winding Swiss made mechanism has been fully serviced prior to this auction and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original gold, matte enamel finished waffle weave dial is guaranteed untouched since it left the factory 52 years ago and is in excellent condition and without flaw. Features include applied fancy “arrow” design hour markers and Arabic numerals, original gold Lance-style hands and a gold center ‘sweep’ seconds hand. Signed BULOVA below the 12 and SELFWINDING above the 6. It is further signed SWISS at the base of the dial.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition and clear. The Bulova-signed two-piece case (with additional steel screw-down back lid outer ring) is 10kt Yellow Rolled Gold Plated and in excellent condition, complete with fancy fish “HOOK” lugs and a fantastic scooped and scalloped bezel – the likes of which you probably have never seen before. The original Bulova-signed gold winding crown in great condition and operates as it should.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is stamped Bulova – 10kt Rolled Gold Plate – Shock Resistant – Antimagnetic – Self Winding – Waterproof – L9 with case number. The “L9” is the firm’s date code for 1959.
Inside I find a clean and fully serviced mechanism that has a rotor (that winds the movement) complete with cutaway “B” for Bulova design, a nice detail. It is signed BULOVA WATCH CO. – 11 AFAC – 17 SEVENTEEN JEWELS, SWISS, BXW – L9. Note how the movement also features the (L9) 1959 date stamp. The inside case back is signed BULOVA – FIFTH AVE – NEW YORK.
This cleaned, oiled and regulated watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

I’ve added a new 18mm black deBeer Paris lizard grain (calf) leather band with matching gold buckle. Folks, I think I could be waiting quite a few years before I see another one of these Bulova models for sale. It’s highly unique case and fancy dial and makes it an extra nice (and honestly scarce) example of the Bulova self-winding genre.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I have always loved Bulova, an American company of great repute. By 1922, the name Bulova Watch Company would begin to appear on watch dials across the country and the rest, as they say, is history.
I am pleased to offer for sale this men's 14kt Solid Yellow Gold timepiece, a top-of-the-line “Excellency” series model made right here in the United States in 1948. Let me first say that photographing this watch was a real “bear” as black dial watches (with crystals attached) are never easy. Be assured that the dial is in excellent condition, along with the rest of the watch.
Triple-signed, its scallop sided case measures 36mm end to end and 21.5mm in width (23mm winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-3/8 inches long by 7/8 of an inch wide, not including the crown – a smaller men’s size that is also well-suited for a woman’s wrist. It is powered by a high-grade 21 Jewel, USA made mechanism that has been fully serviced by my Bulova-trained watchmaker David prior to auction so it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, professionally restored in the recent past. It features raised gold stylized Arabic numerals, original gold metal Baton-style hands and a separate seconds dial with 60 second outer track and ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed BULOVA below the 12 in gold lettering.
The solid glass crystal is in mint condition and clear, a recent replacement. The rectangular, Tank form case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and is in excellent condition with nicely “scalloped” sides as shown. The matching gold-finished winding crown, unmarked, s excellent as well, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is stamped 14K GOLD BULOVA with case reference number 8462401. In the center it is tastefully engraved “Bud”, as shown. Inside is

Founded in the city of Grenchen, Switzerland in 1912, the Fortis Watch Company was the brainchild of watchmaker Walöter Vogt, a gentleman who emphasized technical innovation above all else. In 1926 Fortis presented the world’s first self-winding wristwatch in series production (the Harwood), and by 1937 had entered the chronograph market. Known for its waterproof “Compressor” and alarm chronometer timepieces, they are perhaps most famous for the “Spacematic,” developed in 1962 for NASA and used by American astronauts.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following timepiece from the Fortis company, a vintage men’s “Super Compressor” Marine Master divers model that dates to ca 1970. Let me first say that this is a very LARGE watch, especially so for the time period it was produced. I also want to say that it is in excellent PLUS condition –arguably nicer than my photos convey.
Its solid stainless steel case (brushed on the bezel, polished on the sides and back lid) measures 49.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 42mm in width (45.5mm with original thatched finish winding and timing bezel crowns). This works out to be 2 inches in length by over 1-5/8 inches in width, not including the crowns. It is powered by a 25 jewel, rotor automatic (ETA 2452 caliber) self-winding mechanism that has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring it keeps accurate time.
The original red, black, white and cream color dial (with orange inner bezel numbers) is simply beautiful and in MINT condition – untouched since made at the factory. It features a fully functional rotating inner bezel (controlled by the top crown), original silver steel and orange hour and minute hands (with luminous inserts) a semi-quickset date window at the 6 position and original black ‘sweep’ center seconds hand with luminous white tip. Signed FORTIS with crown motif and MARINEMASTER in the center of the dial. It is also signed SWISS MADE T just below the date window.
The armored acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition and original. The two-piece case is a heavy weight solid stainless steel example in spotless condition – truly pristine. It is brushed/satin finish on the top with polished sides. The original thatch engraved crowns (correctly non-threaded) are excellent as well, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent to mint

condition and features the old fashion “Deep Sea Diver” engraving that the Super Compressor watches are known for. It is also signed SWISS. Inside I find a clean rotor automatic mechanism that is signed 25 JEWELS – SWISS MADE with caliber number ETA 2452 below the balance wheel. The inside of the case back is stamped SWISS MADE – SU PER-COMPRESSOR – BREVET +317537, BREVET + 337462 – FORTIS WATCH CO., SWISS – 4-70. The word “Brevet” is French for patent.
This pristine watch has been fully serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The date is semi-quickset (24hr/20hr) meaning to advance a whole day without advancing the hands 24 hours you can have the date change at midnight and then move the hour hand back to 8pm then back past midnight to advance an entire day. This watch is fitted with a new and high quality Bonetto Cinturini black 22mm Italian rubber strap with matching stainless steel buckle. Whether you collect vintage dive watches, Compressor models or just love beautiful watches this one has it all – one of the nicest looking watches I have seen in some time.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. A consistent producer of high quality watches in limited quantities, the Mathey-Tissot Watch Co. of Switzerland is a well-known name in the vintage watch collecting world. While sometimes confused with [Charles] Tissot watches (Omega’s sister company for many years), this Tissot firm was named for its founder Edmond Mathey-Tissot who established his factory in June, 1886 in the town of Les Ponts-de-Martel.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s vintage timepiece from Mathey Tissot – a 14kt Solid Yellow Gold “Matissonic” model in a HERMETIC one-piece case that dates to ca 1974 in pristine original condition. Check out the wonderful honeycomb, textured dial! This watch is like a time capsule, giving as a Century Club award and likely stored away for the last 38 years, it really looks as though it has been worn. It comes with its original outer box marked Mathey-Tissot, inner box with company emblem, M-Tissot booklet and gold colored Owner’s Certificate with guaranteed and watch care instructions.
This is a scarcer UHF automatic wind model – the UHF standing for “Ultra High Frequency” and it is powered by the ETA 2784 that beats at 28,800 A/h (the Rolex Tudor Submariner used this caliber as well).
Triple-signed, it measures a solid 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 34mm in width (37mm with original unmarked crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-1/2 inches long by just shy of 1-3/8” wide, not including the winding crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, rotor automatic Mathey-Tissot signed mechanism that has been fully serviced by my valued watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original gold, enamel finished dial is in MINT condition, untouched since it left the factory and a finely textured, waffle weave that must be seen in person. It features applied gold and black lacquered hour markers,

matching gold and black lacquer hands, a quickset date window at the 3 position and original ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed Mathey-Tissot AUTOMATIQUE below the solid 18k gold company emblem and UHF MATISSONIC above the 6 marker. It is further signed SWISS at the base of the dial.
The 100% original acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold case is a one-piece hermetic design in flawless shape, stamped Mathey-Tissot inside as shown. The original (correctly unmarked) gold finished winding crown is excellent as well, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over, I note that the back of the case is in excellent shape with absolutely no wear or scratches. This is a presentation watch and it is signed to a Henry s. Jackson as a Century Club Member at Lawsons Products Inc. on April 20, 1974.
As this is a one-piece case I had my watchmaker David take the photos of the mechanism and inside of the case. The gold finished ETA 2784 caliber mechanism is a rotor automatic and it is signed in blue enamel painted lettering (some worn off, as seen) MATHEY-TISSOT, SWISS – SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS. This is a high beat mechanism, 28,800 beats per hour to be exact (you can hear the difference). The inside of the case lid is nicely engine turned and stamped MATHEY-TISSOT, SWISS – 14K, 0.585 - 1621. There are also Swiss gold hallmarks, including the “Squirrel” hallmark.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. I have fitted a new 18mm deBeer black lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle for a nice combination. This watch will ship with all original papers, guarantees, outer box and display case – all in excellent shape. Truly a fantastic, original, ready to wear solid 14k gold automatic from a high respected watch firm you don’t often come across, I think you’re going to like this one.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I’ve always had a soft spot for early Art Deco wristwatches, especially ones with unique cases or inlaid enameling. Here is one such example, an all original men’s model made by the Elaine Watch Co. of Switzerland, a popular brand throughout the 1920s. This model, with its inlaid geometric enameling at all four bezel corners, likely took its styling cue from the Bulova “Conqueror” – later known as the first watch in the Lone Eagle Series.
Triple-signed, it measures measures 32mm end to end and 24mm in width (26mm with original crown). This works out to be 1-1/4 inches in total length by 1 inch in width, a smaller men’s watch (also known as Boy size or ¾ size) that would now be ideal for a woman’s wrist. It is powered by its original very nice quality, Six Jewel, 2 adjustment manual wind movement that was fully serviced in early 2012 to assure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – it couldn’t have evenly aged more nicely and with a fine vintage patina. Features include a 60 minute inner track border, silver foil finish finely engraved center

dial, radium finished Arabic numerals, original blue steel hands with fill and a square sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and ‘sweep’ blue steel seconds hand. Signed ELAINE below the 12 and SWISS the base of the dial.
The octagonal, solid glass crystal was especially cut for this case by my jeweler and is in mint condition. The case is a two-piece, hinged back example with “Cut Corners” and very nice inlaid black enameling, as shown. It is signed “Elaine Watch Co., Swiss” and, while not marked for content, is nickel. Condition is very nice, as shown. The original winding crown is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly. Please note that there is some ‘play’ (dial slightly moves) when winding or setting but this should not be of any real concern as the dial/movement will sit straight in the case.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is free of any wear or engravings, perhaps some light scratches but still very solid and clean. Inside I find a clean and original lever escapement mechanism, signed Elaine Watch Co., Swiss – Two 2 Adjustments, Six 6 Jewels – 1728. Six jewel mechanisms were quite common in the early to mid 1920s and this one is of very nice quality. The inside of the case back is stamped ELAINE WATCH CO., SWISS.
This watch has been recently cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted with a new deBeer black smooth finish calf leather band with matching color buckle. It will fit a wrist 5-3/4 to just over 7-1/2 inches in size. Folks, if you ever wanted a quintessential Art Deco wristwatch in original condition (that also runs great) this is a fantastic choice – I think the winner is going to be very pleased.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Among watch collectors, the Omega Watch Co. of Switzerland, a firm founded by Louis Brandt of Biel in 1848, is one of the most renowned brands of timepieces. In 1894 a new caliber bore the name of Omega for the first time, and since then it has produced some of the finest caliber wristwatches money can buy. Omega is my favorite Swiss watch firm as well, combining those qualities of name brand recognition, high quality and relative value that are important to the seasoned watch collector.
Omega strongly reaffirmed its position as a collector’s brand in 2007 when Antiquorum held its “Omegamania” theme sale in Geneva, Switzerland. The prices realized vastly exceeded pre-auction estimates and set new records for many older models. Yes folks, good vintage Omega watches are only going UP in value.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men's Omega timepiece, an automatic wind SEAMASTER “De Ville” model in a hermetic design case that dates to ca 1966. This original example is crafted of 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and features a spotless, untouched gold dial.
Quadruple-signed (dial, crown, case and mechanism), it measures 37mm lug tip to lug tip and 32mm in width (34.2mm with Omega-signed winding crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-1/2 inches long

by 1-1/4 inches wide, not counting the crown. It is powered by a high quality Omega 670 Caliber, 17 jewel self-winding mechanism, fully serviced by my watchmaker David just last week to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The 100% original, finely brushed, enamel finished gold dial is in MINT condition, guaranteed untouched since it left the factory on this watch. Features include a 60 second outer chapter, applied gold hour markers with adjacent tritium dots, original gold hands with tritium fill and ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed OMEGA AUTOMATIC with applied gold trademark Omega symbol below the 12 and Seamaster De Ville above the 6. It is further signed T SWISS MADE T at the base of the dial, the “T” standing for tritium.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition with no flaws. The hermetic case (with removable bezel) is 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and in pristine condition – it is without any flaws and not been polished other than with a cloth. The original Omega-signed gold finished winding crown is spotless as well, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the back of the case is stamped 14K GOLD, as shown and is excellent like the rest of the watch with no wear or engravings, past or present. As this watch requires a professional to remove the bezel, crystal and then the stem/crown to access the mechanism I had my watchmaker David take the photos inside before closing her up after service. The mechanism is a clean gold finished example signed Omega Watch Co., Swiss [Caliber] 670 – Seventeen 17 Jewels, OXG. The serial number is #24,643,202 – dating the watch to ca 1966 as per available Omega production records. The inside of the case is signed OMEGA WATCH CO. – ROSS with model and case number below.
This watch has been fully serviced (disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated) so you can be assured that it winds and sets smoothly while keeping very accurate time. It comes fitted on new and high quality 17mm black deBeer Paris lizard (grain) calf leather band with matching gold finished buckle. Whether it be a Seamaster or Constellation all watch lovers need to have at least one Omega in their collection. How about this excellent and original, solid 14k gold example?

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the “big boys” of the Swiss watch making profession including its chief rival Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s 14kt Solid White Gold fancy stepped case model that dates to ca 1950. This quadruple-signed model is in excellent condition both inside and out, complete with a Genuine 12 Diamond dial, all original and securely set.
The fancy, octagonal case measures 36mm lug tip to lug tip and 27.5mm in width (29mm with partially recessed Longines-signed winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-3/8 inches long by 1-1/8 inches wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, manual wind Longines 23Z caliber mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, professionally restored to its correct original status. Black dials are notorious for being hard to

photograph so I don’t believe the photos do it justice. Features include genuine diamonds (set in rhodium settings) for hour markers, an engraved border that sits below the diamond settings and original silver steel Dauphine-style hands. Being a dress model it is without a seconds dial. Signed LONGINES below the 12 marker with applied winged hourglass emblem and SWISS at the base of the dial.
The cut corner curved acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition, a later replacement removed in some photos to avoid glare. The fancy stepped case is a two-piece design that is 14 Karat Solid White Gold and it is in excellent PLUS condition, nicer than my photos perhaps show and free of any wear. The original and matching white gold finished Longines-signed crown (winged hourglass emblem) is in excellent shape and operates smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the 14k solid white gold back lid is in excellent condition – stamped 14K at the edge. Inside I find a clean and fully serviced manual wind mechanism, signed Longines Watch Co., Swiss – Seventeen 17 Jewels [Grade] 23Z, LXW with serial number 7,954,623 – dating the watch to ca 1950 as per available production records. The inside case is stamped LONGINES WITTNAUER WATCH CO. - NEW YORK, GENEVA, MONTREAL – 14K with case number below. The “L” stamp is for the Arnold Lemieux Watch Case Company.
This fine watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 16mm black deBeer Paris hand finished lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle. I have always been partial to Art Deco era Tank model timepieces in stainless steel cases, relatively rare compared to those in solid gold or gold filled cases. The following early 1940s model is a great example of such and its beautiful dial doesn’t hurt either. Also appealing is that it is an early hermetic (water + dust resistant) design, with a special ledge crystal and screw back case.
It was made in Switzerland by the Tavannes Watch Company, a watch firm I’ve long held a high opinion for, having made some of the finest, most “forward thinking” wristwatches in the first half of the 20th Century…on par with Omega and Longines in terms of design and quality. It was founded in the town of Tavannes (hence the name) in 1891 by H.F. Sandoz and they also produced watches under the equally well-known “CYMA” name.
This triple-signed, rectangular form watch measures 39mm end to end and 22.5mm in width (25mm with original steel winding crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-1/2 inches long by 1 inch wide, crown included. My skilled

watchmaker David has fully serviced its original and higher-grade Reference 365 caliber, 17 jewel manual winding mechanism, ensuring it runs well and keeps accurate time.
The silver, matte enamel finished dial is in mint condition – professionally restored to its correct original status and beautifully done – I love it. It features a 60 minute outer track border, black enameled numerals, original black finish metal hands and a recessed sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ original seconds hand. Signed TAVANNES below the 12.
The special fit (ledged) acrylic crystal is new old stock for this case model and is in excellent, clear condition. The two-piece case is secured by four separate screws at the back and is in excellent condition. It is solid stainless steel and with absolutely no wear – nicer than my photos convey. The original steel winding crown is in excellent shape too, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is all stainless and held in place via four screws set into the lugs. It is in excellent condition and is signed “DWG – 9-42 – HEZ” in the center – possibly a WWII related gift, given this being a robust, hermetic model. The case back carries the number 8755-449. As this is a special case design I had my watchmaker David take the photos inside before closing it up after service. The mechanism is a higher-grade example with fine Geneva striping decorating the top plates. It is signed Tavannes Watch Co. – Patented Swiss, Seventeen 17 Jewels – TXW, Ref. 365 K. The serial number is #160,876. The inside case back is stamped BREVET + No. 189,190 – TAVANNES WATCH CO., SWISS – STAINLESS STEEL with case number below. The “Brevet” number is the Swiss patent number.
This fully serviced (disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated) watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. I’ve fitted the watch with a new and high quality 16mm black deBeer Europa lizard grain calf leather strap with chrome steel ready to be worn and enjoyed. So that’s the skinny on this very nice, beautiful dial WWII era military Tank form watch - who is going to be its proud new owner?

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Founded by Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer in New York City, the Wittnauer Watch Company. became an official business in 1880, when the brand was “officially” introduced. Albert, along with his brother Louis (and later Emile) imported complete watches or just mechanisms from its Geneva, Switzerland factory. In 1889 the company ran its very first advertisement. Appearing in the twentieth anniversary issue of the Jewelers’ Weekly, the ad notes that the company sold both “plain and complicated” watches, suggesting that it was a source for

chronographs and repeating watches.
By the 20th century they were firmly established as providing watches, chronometers and military timing devices to the military, famed early explorers and the general public, and are on record for producing the first waterproof watch called the “All Proof” in 1918. Long associated with the Longines Watch Co. via a US partnership the firm is now owned by Bulova, once a great competitor.
I am happy to offer for sale the following men’s timepiece from Wittnauer, a mid 1950s model (No. 6923) with a beautiful guilloche “Sunburst” dial. Like most black dial watches this was not easy to photograph and I can confidently say that it is even nicer in person than my photos convey – both the dial and solid stainless steel case are spotless.
Triple-signed, it measures 41.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 34mm in width (36.5mm with domed crown). This works out to be just over 1-5/8 inches long by just shy of 1-3/8 inches wide, not including the winding crown. It has been fully serviced by my excellent watchmaker David and its higher grade 17 jewel, manual wind Wittnauer 76/3 caliber “Revue” mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black, enamel finished dial is in mint condition, professionally restored to its correct status and even nicer than my photos show. It has a finely engraved guilloche design that has a Sunburst effect in person, very nice. Features include raised silver hour markers and numerals, original silver steel Dauphine-style hands with luminous fill and a recessed sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ silver steel seconds hand. Signed WITTNAUER below the 12 and SWISS at the base of the dial.
The gently domed hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition and without flaw. The Swiss Made, Wittnauer-signed case is Solid Stainless Steel and in excellent PLUS condition –complete with faceted lugs. The domed steel winding crown, unmarked, is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the screw-down stainless back lid is in excellent PLUS shape with no wear or personal engravings. Inside I find a clean and high quality mechanism that is signed Wittnauer Watch Co. Inc., Seventeen 17 Jewels, [Caliber] 76/3 Revue, Swiss – AXA. The inside case lid is finely engine-turned and signed WITTNAUER WATCH CO. In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler Co. movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more pressing concerns) prevented this.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s Gruen timepiece, a seldom seen VIRTUOSO model Curvex that dates to ca 1951. This original example, complete with unique “Fiddlehead” lugs, is crafted of 14kt Solid Yellow Gold. It was part of the limited MASTERPIECE series that included the “Portrait” and “Artist” (for men) and the “Sublime” and “Symphony” (for woman).
Triple-signed, its curved solid gold case measures 37mm end to end and 22mm in width (24mm with crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-1/2 inches long by 7/8 of an inch wide, without the crown. Its 370 caliber Curvex mechanism (the last in the series) has been fully serviced by my valued watchmaker David just prior to auction and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, untouched since it left the factory over 60 years ago. It features a 60 minute outer track border, raised gold hour markers, original gold metal Leaf-style hands and a detailed sub-seconds dial with 60 second checkered outer chapter, recessed center and “sweep” gold seconds hand. Signed GRUEN CURVEX below the 12 and "PRECISION" above the seconds dial. It is further signed SWITZERLAND at the base of the dial.
The raised and gently curved acrylic crystal is in excellent condition, a new old stock addition. The case is twice signed "Gruen" and crafted of 14 Karat Solid Yellow gold, in excellent condition. The trademark design detail of the Virtuoso is its lugs, and these are curled and incised, what I refer to as “Fiddlehead” in style. The yellow gold finished winding crown, possibly original but unmarked, is in excellent order as well, operating

smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent shape, gently curved and with NO wear or engravings, past or present. It is signed "GRUEN 14K" at one edge with case number X24124 at the opposite side. Please note that all lugs are in excellent shape. Peeking inside I find a truly curved movement, signed Gruen Watch Co., Precision Curvex Pat., Switzerland - Seventeen 17 Jewels – [Caliber] 370 - GXC. The inside of the case is signed Cased and Timed in USA by Gruen Watch Co., WBO 14K GOLD – 370/610. The “WBO” stands for the William B. Ogush Watch Case Company, an American firm that frequently collaborated with Gruen. They were formerly known as “K&O” – Katz & Ogush, but Mr. Katz left to become the President of Gruen itself – small world back then.
This beautiful solid gold Curvex has been cleaned, oiled & regulated so it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 18mm black ostrich grain handcrafted deBeer Paris leather strap with matching color buckle, ready to be worn and enjoyed. So there you have it folks, a ready to wear, rarely seen “Virtuoso” model in excellent original shape. You can be assured that owning a vintage Gruen Curvex means you’re going to watch this gem go up and UP in value while you enjoy owning and wearing it.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.

As my pal Cautious Carl says, "Buy a Nice Watch from Mike"…unlike Carl, I

don’t need a rabies shot each spring!

Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start its watch production until March 1894, having first chosen the name “Columbian Watch Co.” but this name was already copyrighted by the Waterbury Co. The name Hamilton was derived from Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the growth of Lancaster.
By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant watch and during the WWI period a small line of military style watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following Thincraft model from the Hamilton firm, an all original USA made, 18 jewel manual wind timepiece that dates to ca 1957. This is only the second time I’ve seen this particular “Thincraft” model before, and it is not shown in Rene Rondeau’s Hamilton Wristwatch Collector’s Guide. What I love about this one is its original black dial, complete with unique “scalloped” design 60 second outer track. The overhaul effect is very Retro Modern “Sputnik” – no surprise it was made in 1957!
Quadruple signed, its 10kt White Gold Filled case measures 41.5mm end to end and 34mm in width (36.5mm with original Hamilton-signed crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-5/8 inches long

Page 41: holben/Descriptions/September 3... · Web viewThe inside of the case lid is signed Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co., Star W ... Known for its waterproof “Compressor

by just shy of 1-3/8 inches wide, not including the Hamilton-signed crown. It is powered by its original 18 jewel, USA made 735 grade manual wind Hamilton mechanism that’s been fully serviced by my skilled watchmaker David so it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original black, enamel dial is in excellent condition – untouched since it left the factory over half a century ago. Again, I will guarantee this dial to be original and never restored. It features applied 18kt solid white gold hour markers, silver steel Lance-style hands (some specks of age), a 60 second outer track border in a unique scalloped design (calibrated to 1/5 of a second for precision) and ‘sweep’ original center seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12.
The clear acrylic crystal is new old stock and in excellent condition. The 10 Karat White Gold Filled two-piece case is in excellent PLUS condition, complete with flared lugs, very Retro Modern in design. The original Hamilton-signed winding crown is in excellent condition, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the bubble-back style back lid is in excellent condition, nicer than my photo shows. It is stamped HAMILTON at one edge and “10K Gold Filled” on the other side. Inside I find a clean and original manual wind mechanism that is signed Hamilton 735 – Adjusted – 18 Jewels, USA. The inside of the case lid is stamped HAMILTON W. CO., LANCASTER, PA – 10K GOLD FILLED –S&W with case number as well. The “S&W” stands for Schwab & Wuishpard, a noted American watch case manufacturer that supplied Hamilton with many of its cases, this one being patented by Hamilton.
This watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated so it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted on a new 18mm black deBeer hand crafted ostrich (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle. All in all an excellent and original condition Hamilton Thincraft that’s an original rare bird and simply a great looking timepiece.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
