• 70% are caused by males

Page 50: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Why is a baby so easily hurt?

• Heavy head (25% of body weight)

• Weak neck muscles

• Space inside the skull that older children fill with a growing brain

Page 51: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Why is a baby so easily hurt?

Not for Notes…What are the causes SBS?

– Frustrated-tired-stressed out caregiver– Lack of coping skills– Caregiver not educated on SBS

It only takes a second or two to lose control and cause SBS.

Page 53: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

Safe Car Temperatures

Leaving an infant in an unattended vehicle is:•Selfish and lazy•An unsafe parenting practice•Considered to be child abuse/neglect•More dangerous in extreme cold or heat•A rising problem in our country

Page 61: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Hypothermia

• Occurs when the body gets cold and loses heat faster than the body can make it.

• What can happen?– Emergency condition– Unconsciousness or death can occur

Page 62: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Hyperthermia

• When a person’s temperature produces or absorbs more heat than it can dissipate.

Page 63: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Hyperthermia

• It can lead to disability or death.

• Why are infants at a greater risk?– Cannot communicate when overheated– Infants have fewer sweat glands

Page 64: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Hyperthermia

• Example– How quickly can the temperature rise inside a

vehicle on an 80 degree day?

Page 65: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

Page 69: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Why have more infants died due to hypothermia and hyperthermia

in the last 25 years?

Air bags in front seats have moved babies to the back seat, where they are more likely to be forgotten.

Page 70: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Reasons for Fatalities

51%: 51%: babies were forgotten in back seat

30%: 30%: children were playing in car without parents knowing they were in the car

17%: 17%: intentionally left in vehicle

1%: 1%: unknown

Page 71: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

Safety Tips• Never leave children alone in or around cars; not even for a

minute.

• Put something you'll need like your cell phone, handbag, employee ID or brief case, etc., on the floor in the back seat.

• Keys and/or remote openers should never be left within reach of children.

Page 72: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Safety Tips• When a child is missing, check vehicles and car

trunks immediately.• If you see a child alone in a vehicle, get involved.  If

they are hot or seem sick, get them out as quickly as possible.  Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

• Use drive‐thru services when available. (restaurants, banks, pharmacies, dry cleaners, etc.)

Imagine that someone in your life is about to become a teen parent. They are under the impression that being a parent is all fun and games and photo ops, and really have no idea about the dangers and issues that we have discussed in this unit.

Page 76: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

www.realityworks.com

Parenting Unit Activity

Working collaboratively, write this teen a letter to advise them on the issues we discussed in this unit. Be sure to include as many concerns and warnings to be aware of about FAS/drug use while pregnant, SBS, SIDS and safe car temperatures. You may also include things you learned in preparation for the baby project (IE head support).

Page 77: Www.realityworks.com Senior Health Parenting Unit Mr. Attanasio

When you are done, put a footnote style number after each specific suggestion.

Example: Be sure to always have proper head and neck support when you handle your baby.
