01 September 2016 - Issue 8, Term 3

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Sisters of Mercy in Timaru. To mark this special

anniversary, we plan to make this the focus of our next community Mass which will be on

Saturday 10 September at St Thomas’.

Mercy is a central teaching of the church and

reminds us that we are called to treat others with

compassion, regardless of race, sex, ability,

religion, etc. In short, it is the story of the

Good Samaritan who showed mercy to his

neighbour when others chose to simply pass by.

In keeping with the theme of mercy, I was forwarded the letter below from one of my colleagues. It was written

to parents by the principal of a school in India who was concerned that too much emphasis was being placed

on exams and not enough on developing the individual.

It is a timely reminder to us all that each one of our young people is unique and needs encouragement and

support to develop their own special gifts and talents. It is easy for students to get discouraged or to ‘melt

down’ under the pressure of exams and some even become disillusioned and give up altogether.

It is important to temper assessments and exams with activities that feed the soul.

Until next time,

Chris Comeau

Principal

Dear Parents

The exams of children are to start soon. I know you all are really anxious for your child to do well.

But, please do remember, amongst the students who will take the exams is an artist who doesn't need to

understand Math.

There's an entrepreneur who doesn't care about History or English literature.

There's a musician whose Chemistry marks won't matter.

There's a sportsperson whose physical fitness is more important than Physics.

If your child does get top marks then great. But if he or she doesn't then don't take away their self-

confidence from them.

Tell them it's ok, it's just an exam. They are cut out for much bigger things in life.

Tell them, no matter what they score you love them and will not judge them.

Please do this and if you do, watch your children conquer the world. One exam or a 90 percent won't take

away their dreams and talent.

And please do not think that doctors and engineers are the only happy people in the world.

With Warm Regards,

The Principal

Thank you

A big thank you to everyone who supported

the production of Shrek Jnr the Musical.

The show was a huge success and this was largely

due to the amazing community support which was

given to the musical. The very talented cast of twenty

eight were supported by a group of sixty five parents

and friends of the school. This dedicated group

worked on set construction and painting, created the

amazing costumes and props, assisted with hair and

makeup, provided backstage management and

dressed cast for quick costume changes.

A big thank you also to our Director Alice Sollis,

Musical Director Rob Martin and Choreographer Belli

Faha who shaped our raw talent into a slick,

coordinated and highly skilled team of vocalists,

actors and dancers.

Finally thank you to all those who attended the show – there was a capacity audience each performance. Your

support was appreciated by the cast crew.

Online Permission Forms For College Activities

Currently the College is reviewing and refining our Health and Safety procedures to ensure they are accurate,

robust and efficient. Part of this is an exploration of the use of online processes for parents to give permission

to attend College trips and make payments for these. This is being primarily distributed through an email with

a link that will take you to an online permission form that all parents need to submit in order for the students

to attend a trip. Also included are the details for parents to be able to make payments by internet banking.

We ask that all parents check the email accounts they have given the College regularly, especially when your

student is expecting to go on a trip. If you have changed your account recently, please contact the College Office

so that we may update your details.

Senior Examination Week – 12-16 September 2016

All senior students will be involved in senior examinations and assessment week during Week 8 of this term

(12-16 September). Junior classes will run as normal. The term three set of examinations is a critical opportunity

for students to prepare and practice for end of year external examinations.

The importance of practice examinations

These practice examinations serve as a feedback loop. The results of the practice examinations will provide

feedback and feed forward on areas for improvement in preparation for the NCEA examinations which will begin

on 9 November 2016. Senior Conferencing day (Monday 10 October) will be a further opportunity for students

and caregivers to receive feedback and feed forward.

Examination Preparation Tips

Getting Started

The earlier you start, the more time you will have to prepare for the examination

Make sure all of your course material is well organised so you can find and fill any gaps.

Creating a Study Plan

As the examination nears, you will need to create a plan to help you study effectively and minimise stress. The

first step is to figure out how much time you need to dedicate to studying for the examination by asking the

following questions:

How much material do you need to cover?

How difficult is the material?

How much time is available?

Do you have any other priorities during the study period?

What is the format of the examination?

Implementing your plan

To prepare the study plan, map out all of the material that has to be covered and make a schedule showing

what, when and how much you will study each day.

budget your time realistically

allocate the study time into several manageable study sessions

divide the course material into small segments and assign them to the study sessions

set clear and specific goals for the study sessions

prioritise to ensure that material weighted more heavily in the examination gets sufficient study time.

On the day of the exam

Reminder please do not bring the following items into the examination room:

any electronic devices (including cell phones, ipads and ipods). The only exception is approved

calculators in specified examinations only

blank paper or refill paper

correcting fluid

books, written notes or electronic notes

cell phones or pagers

English dictionaries, foreign language dictionaries, or te reo Māori dictionaries or translators

Cell phone protocol - internal and external assessment

By the changing nature of smart phones, these devices are now able to easily access information and are

therefore considered to be the same as any other prohibited material during examinations. It is highly

recommended that all cell phones are left at home. If it is essential that you have a cell phone on the day of the

examination, it must be switched off, in a named plastic bag and taken to the office prior to the examination

Page 6: 03 688 6003 PO Box 138, Timaru

www.roncalli.school.nz 03 688 6003 PO Box 138, Timaru

line up. Whilst all care is used, no responsibility is able to be taken for student’s cell phones during the

examination period.

Parking

For the duration of the practice examination period vehicle access to the quad is restricted. Parents and

caregivers are requested not to use the Wellington Street entrance for dropping off and collecting students.

Your support with minimising all noise around the Hall area for the durations of the practice exams is much

appreciated.

Uniform and College Expectations

All students are required to wear the correct full school uniform to both tutorials and to practice examinations.

The College rules relating to students transporting other students in vehicles also continue to apply.

GATEWAY

Term 4 has been busy with students confirming plans for their next step. We visited Ara Institute for a guided

tour and information session followed up by “student for a day” experiences where students spent a day in a

polytech class of their choice. Students have the opportunity to talk to the tutor about the course and experience

what it is like to be a student at Ara.

Our construction students were involved in the BCITO

Construction Tour last week where they spent a day visiting work

places and construction sites looking at the 14 different trades

involved in the construction industry, talking to employers and

current apprentices about their trades and training.

Students are busy completing workplace units with the majority

ready to finish their placements by the end of term 3 or early in

term 4. We hope you enjoy reading our next set of Gateway

Profiles.

Stone Choomak

I am doing the Gateway Programme this year to gain some experience in New

Zealand workplaces. I have researched careers in engineering, business and

carpentry and have selected the construction industry for work experience. I

have one day every week working with Craig O’Keeffe Building. Craig’s work is

mostly building new houses and doing renovations.

I have spent time building a deck and have been learning about using

equipment.

I am completing BCITO level 3 carpentry unit standards which count towards a

carpentry qualification. Next year I would like to attend Ara Institute studying

towards a construction management qualification.

Page 9: 03 688 6003 PO Box 138, Timaru

Helena O’Brien

When I started Gateway this year I researched careers in Flight Attending and Early Childhood. I went to a one

day course for flight attending and two childcare centres for taster days. I selected working at one of the

Kindergartens and decided to go there for my placement. I am currently working at Craighead Kindergarten

where my job involves reading, painting playing with and working with the children aged 2-5 years. In my

Gateway class I am working on PORSE Early Childhood unit standards. My plans for next year are to return to

school and complete year 13 and gainNCEA L3.

Lauchie Hicks

I hadn’t really heard a lot about Gateway prior to this year so I didn’t really know

what to think apart from the fact that a lot of students that go into Gateway at the

start of the year end up coming out with an apprenticeship in something they enjoy. I

went in with little knowledge of what I wanted to do hoping to find a career choice

that I enjoy.

I researched electrical careers including refrigeration engineering. My work

placement is with Plunket Electrical where I do tasks such as running cable,

installing switches, switchboards, lights etc. I am registered with the Skills

Organisation and have a set of electro-technology unit standards to complete

including on-job practical assessment, evidence sheets and theory work. The unit

standards count towards an apprenticeship in the future. At the end of the

programme I would like to gain an apprenticeship or do the pre-trade course at Ara

Institute

Cormac Betts

I took Gateway as a subject this year because I thought it was a good way to find a job that I wanted. I trialed

taster days at Rickie Shore Building, Zest, Mitre 10, The

Warehouse, DOC and I also spent a day out with an agronomist.

I am very interested in tourism careers and spent a day at the NZ

School of Tourism in Christchurch. To gain customer service

experience and people skills I have chosen to do work experience

in retail; every Wednesday I attend my placement at The

Warehouse. I am experiencing all the different areas of work

within The Warehouse which so far has included customer service

and practical jobs like cleaning and making sure shelves are full. I

have spent time in the technology department; to do this job you

need to know and be able to understand the products on sale.

My learning plan includes Service IQ Retail unit standards on

personal presentation, customer service and safe work practices,

the units are a mixture of theory and practical tasks and will be

assessed by Service IQ. I hope to leave school this year and would like to find a full time retail job.

Fraser Pattie

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started Gateway. My work

placement is with Joyce Building where I go for one day every week. I

felt nervous at the start because I hadn’t done much building before.

This job involves a wide range of tasks, a few examples are: crawling

under houses to hammer in pegs, sawing wood, drilling binders,

hammering nails and climbing onto rooves.

In Gateway class time I am working on a BCATS safety unit standard. I

plan on returning to school next year to complete NCEA Level 3 and

would like to continue with Gateway work experience in the construction

industry.
