Meeting—20 March 2018

Tuesday, 20 March marked a DFT (damned fine turnout) gathering of the St Louis Tri-umph faithful, with 30 members gathering at Culpepper’s in St Charles for good food, con-versation and, of course, an election. There was definitely a buzz in the air concerning the latter, but in and around that the usual pre-meeting communications took place; David Lay-ton made the rounds sharing a photo of his latest acquisition, a ’73 BMW 2002tii while else-where someone discussed his ongoing efforts to catch flying fish up by Alton (no, we do not know what that was all about…).

When Dave and Linda Massey arrived, everyone broke into cheers. Dave naturally as-sumed he’d been elected in absentia – again – to the presidency (it would’ve constituted his third tour in the office); his reaction set off the crowd, who proceeded to applaud everyone else who came through the door, including Bob Carmody and Lee Fox (rsp by the latter: “Not only no, but…”). Someone called out, “Come in, you look presidential!” to which another member re-sponded, “Actually, he looks confused.” “Then he’s per-fect!”

Outgoing president Steve Moore initiated the business component of the gathering at 7:06 by introducing guests and one “returning old member” (rsp: “Most of the mem-bership is old”). He also welcomed Andy Stark back to the fold; Andy in turn introduced his bride Stephanie (comment from the floor: “Did he warn you about us, Stephanie?”).

Next, the main event: the elections. Steve announced the vote constituted his last official act (cheers and one cry of “collusion!”) and handed off to the secretary, who discussed each vacant position – president, vice presi-dent and treasurer – their importance to the operation of the club and the equal importance of participation and support by all members. Steve then called for nomina-

Andy Stark (center) graciously accepts the accolades of the membership following his election as the 2018-2020 president of the St Louis Triumph Owners Associa-tion. The group includes former presidents Jesse Lowe (center right, brown hat), a somewhat worn out Steve Moore (lower left), Dave Massey (right, with sword); new vice president Creig Houghtaling (center left, hat raised); and retired vice president Stephen Paur (right, gesturing to Massey). New treasurer Maria Moore couldn’t make the photo as she was busy reviewing the books. (Painting: “The Bat-

Well, we’re certainly well into a highly entertaining year, a lot of the festivities driven by the classic Mid-western transition from winter to spring (as I write this, it’s Saturday, 7 April and 26 degrees outside…but hey, at least it’s severe clear!). As I’ve mentioned to a few people, if you recall 11 February – our origi-nally scheduled date for the annual Polar Bear Run – the weather and road conditions were miserable. One week later? Clear and push-ing 65 degrees. Roughly six weeks later, time for the annual HCCMO Easter Concours at Forest Park

Triumph-MG Challenge IX/

57th Annual Forest Park Concours

Well, you gotta love the Midwest. As the early risers/drivers at this year’s 56th Annual HCCMO concours – recently retired SLTOA president Steve Moore, former president Steve Lowe, current treas-urer Maria Moore, ace Exhaust Notes photog John Moore and Yr Fthfl Ed – commented (somewhat passionately): on 18 February, for this year’s Polar Bear Run, we had clear skies and a temperature in the vicinity of 65º. Six weeks later, 1 April, Forest Park? Also clear…but only 32º (and that’s being charitable) with an expected high of 36º and oh, did you hear? Good chance of snow mid-to-late afternoon.

Not surprising, with the threatening weather, attendance suffered a bit this year but in the end, SLTOA put 17 Triumphs on the field, starting with a TR6-TR7-TR8 lineup. Not a bad turnout considering the conditions and the promise of really bad, slickery weather later in the day, but it undoubtedly cut down on the turnout. The MGs rallied to the cause, though – Lee Fox fired off an advisory email Sunday early, pointing out the bad weather wasn’t expected until mid-afternoon, well past the time of the 12 noon count of cars for the trophy – and sure enough, our Friends of Abingdon turned out 27 cars. Ah well…early afternoon, new Prez Andy Stark performed one of his first official duties, congratulating MG Club of St Louis Chair-man Andy Ackerman on his club’s taking the 2018 British Leyland Participation Challenge trophy.

Other than having to bundle up, most who did participate this year enjoyed a fair range of vehicles and a chance to swap stories and make new acquaintances. Overall, attendance by other car clubs and individuals also seemed down from previous Forest Park con-cours and the usual huge mid-Sunday crowds didn’t show up this year. Some clubs still managed to put a fair number of vehicles on

the pavement, including the Show-Me Corvair Club and STL Gateway AMC (a particularly entertaining lineup of cars, including three Gremlins in a row: amazing!). Still, for those who made the run to the Muny, it was a good time.

Thanks to President Emeritus Steve Moore for putting the SLTOA contingent together, and particular thanks to all the Moores for showing up Sunday early with hot coffee and snacks. We will see about regaining that trophy next year, right?

The Trophy

The formal title for the annual face-off between St Louis’ Triumph and MG clubs is the British Leyland Attendance Challenge. We’re not sure who dreamed it up, but the first challenge took place at the April 2009 HCCMO Easter Concours at Forest Park; since then, the battle has raged back and forth on an annual basis.

Here are the year-by-year victors, with the victory slogan or motto (or whatever you want to call it) place by the winning club on a plaque at the trophy’s base:

12 April 2009—SLTOA 40, MG Club 24, “Shock and Awe-Shucks!”

4 April 2010—SLTOA 34, MG Club 28, “Back to the Garage, Morris.”

24 Apr 11—SLTOA 21, MG Club 17 , “You Snooze, You Lose”

4 Apr 12—MG Club 28, SLTOA 23, “The MGs have Triumphed!”

31 Mar 13—Coventry 34, Abingdon 31, “Let’s Take Up the Whole Side!”

20 Apr 14—MG Club 26, SLTOA 26*

5 Apr 15—suspended: parking lot repairs at the Muny

27 Mar 16—MG Club 28, SLTOA 22

16 Apr 17—SLTOA 26, MG Club 19, “In the End, Good Will Triumph”

BSCC Autocross No. 1

and it was really cold again, with a forecast for rain/freezing rain/sleet and possibly snow.

Amazing, but again, that’s typical for this part of the coun-try. In fact, I almost feel said for our counterpart Triumph owners/enthusiasts in other parts of the country, such as south Florida, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and southern Cali-fornia. Imagine if you will how boring it would be to have con-sistently warm weather year ‘round? (Truth be known, I have a feeling a lot of our club members would be more than happy to volunteer to do some in-depth Triumph-driving weather/climate-related research in Florida, Texas, Arizona, etc…).

Changing subjects for a moment, in the past couple of years with I’ve highlighted laws which could or will impact the sports/special interest car community and hobby. As is SOP with governments, agencies and bureaucracies, every year brings new laws or at the least proposals which at first glance could prove devastating to our hobby and the enjoyment of our vehicles.

For example, a couple of large cities in Yurp – notably, Lon-don and Paris – have passed laws to limit or minimize private vehicle use within city limits. IIRC, the government of London now levies a substantial “congestion charge” on every vehicle which enters, private and commercial. Efforts are underway right now to outright ban gas and diesel-powered vehicles from several parts of the city, under penalty of a hefty fine; the British government plans an outright ban on internal combus-tion-powered vehicles in the nation in 2040 (so much for the annual London to Brighton run, among activities, eh?). Paris, following the same justification of cutting emissions, plans to

Negative Camber (Continued from page 4) ban all vehicles from the city by 2030. Oslo, Norway, will ban vehicles from its city center by 2019 and the nation plans to go internal combustion-free by 2025. Similar efforts are underway in Madrid, Spain, Hamburg, Germany (under the title of Grue-nes Netz or “green network”) and Mexico City, Mexico.

Shoot, there are even activists out there who flat-out think personal ownership of cars is immoral and should be banned (those of you who are members of VTR will see a column about that mindset in the next issue of The Vintage Triumph).

Think it can’t happen here in the Colonies? Well….Earlier this month Jenny Durkan, the mayor of Seattle, Washington, announced a plan to implement tolls for the use of the city’s streets. The effort is similar to London’s, initiating “congestion pricing” to cut down on the number of vehicles in town. Options apparently include closing off access to certain parts of Seattle; anyone who wants to drive in will have to stop and pay the toll. AND, Washington – like neighboring Oregon – is considering implementing a by-the-mile toll on all vehicles operating in the state (which leads to the obvious question: will Washington’s already high license fees and fuel tax get cut? For some rea-son I doubt it).

At the other end of the country, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has convinced the state’s legislators to initiate a $12 daily fee for entry into midtown Manhattan. Now personally, I think anyone who intentionally drives their POV in Manhattan is probably nuts, but it all goes to personal mobility and what looks like a coming wave of restrictions on vehicular use.

Where is this all going to go and will it spread around the country? To early to say, but we’ll continue to monitor develop-ments and proposals.

Summary—Yeah, it was an early start to the season and yeah, the conditions were a tad chilly BUT, three members of this year’s expanded team (expanded in that we now include our esteemed colleagues of the other LBC clubs in town) still took to the course at Family Arena and generally had a large time. The BSCC members designed yet another challenging course with long straights, tight turns and slaloms and the drivers responded, with multiple spins and pylons flying all over the place (one appeared to reach orbital velocity…).

Great fun, come on out and cheer on the team...or better yet, join the team for some

friendly competition! Next event: Sunday 22 April.

tions and names started flying fast. The crew eventually vot-ed-in Andy Stark as president (with one negative vote…by Andy); Creig Houghtaling agreed to serve as vice president while Maria Moore stepped up as the club’s new treasurer, cheers all around.

A discussion on the Forest Park preparations followed (Jesse: “Pray for rain’) and the treasurer reported the club had $2379.45 in the bank, including a number of recent member-ship renewals. The group then reviewed the list of upcoming events. Andy and Lee talked a bit about the MG Club’s up-coming Terry Fanning Rally and Missouri Endurance Rally; Lee threw down the gauntlet, strongly pushing more participa-tion by Triumph owners. The secretary followed with a report on the 18 March first Boeing Sports Car Club autocross of the season.

Getting back to the financial aspects of the club, President Emeritus Moore complemented the club on the election of Señora Moore as the new treasurer (“Your choice was very good”) and announced the creation of an annual budget. In addition, following discussions with the other club officers, he authorized payment by the club of matching funds for last November’s Veteran’s Day Run. That pushed the total dona-tion to the Purple Heart Foundation by the event participants and SLTOA to $1100.

In sad news, one of the members announced the 18 March passing of former member Mel Parentin. Visitation was scheduled for Saturday, 7 April at 11 AM at the St Stanislaus Kosta Church, 1413 N 20th Street, with services following at 12 noon.

Ing Karl Schmitt then took the floor to talk about, well, car shows, particularly those involving Triumphs and other LBCs. He noted our club had two-time major concours winners

Minutes (Continued from page 4) (Chris and Kathy Kresser) among its show and convention participants; Karl added the shows generally took place at resorts and were family-oriented. In the past, SLTOA mem-bers have driven to shows in places like Wisconsin, Kentucky, Texas and North Carolina and taken part in drives over fa-mous routes such as Deals Gap/Tail of the Dragon (US 129). He advised of two really good opportunities this year for club members: VTR at La Crosse, Wisconsin, and 6Pack at Fon-tana Dam, North Carolina. “Please consider going with us,” Karl concluded. “You don’t have to drive the car of the show. Use a trailer, drive something else, but come on out!”

Ed Kaizer put in a plug for the annual Champagne British Car Festival (1-3 June), in Bloomington at the David Davis Mansion. “Nice drive, not too far,” he’s going and would love to see others make the trip.

Greg Rieman said he needed a front bumper for a ’78 Spit-fire. Seems he had an unfortunate run-in with a big ol’ pickup truck…Creig introduced John Willerton, owner of a TR3 and asked about an updated roster. Steve – as his announced “last official act” – responded the new roster would go out once all the dues were in. He added those who didn’t renew by the end of March would be removed from the roster and would no longer receive the Notes.

Steve officially concluded his presidency by thanking every-one: “It would not have been easy without the cohesive team we’ve had.” Then, seeing as he’d forgotten to bring The Offi-cial Presidential Bullhorn, he ceremonially handed The Official Beer of Authority (Bud Lite, natch) (hey, this is St Louis…) to Andy Stark.

The meeting ended at 7:40 PM. Our thanks to Culpepper’s and our most excellent server, Katie.

Andy and Steve: the formal transfer of power...

Getting back to local ops, we’ve held our biennial elections and have a new slate of officers to steer this club through the next couple of years. As I stated at the February meeting, no one officer with this bunch gets stuck with the full work-load of planning meetings/events/drives/etc, the work does get spread around and for that reason were are truly lucky.

If you didn’t or couldn’t run for office this time around, think about jumping in next election in two years. In the mean-

Negative Camber (Continued from page 8) time, when the call comes out for volunteers to assist with activities (ABCCS stands out), please step forward and lend a hand. And, if you have an idea for a drive or some other activ-ity, by all means put a proposal to together and put before the officers and the rest of the membership. Historically, we do respond well to pop-up drives and other events.

I’d say as we move farther into spring and the event sked, as a car club we’re in pretty good shape. We have an excel-lent combination of members and interesting TRs, have great relations with the other LBC clubs hereabouts and a good reputation for participation. Continue to build on that and press on!

66 TR4A—Ive amassed to many projects and this guy needs to go. Ive had it over 10 years but lost my storage last summer. Ran and drove when i got it. Needs everything.
