Fuel Cell Applications Facility

• Objective: create a fuel cells cluster in the Tees Valley

• Static applications

– Supply security and fuel efficiency main drivers– Demonstrator projects

• Significant Involvement– DuPont, Huntsman, Johnson Matthey*, BOC, Air Products*, Terra Nitrogen,

• Progress is substantial– 3 demonstrators in place, 2 more planned– Targeting €2.8bn European funding………enabling a supply chain


Polymer Electronics

• Collaboration with DuPont Teijin Films– Initial project on the Functional Materials Platform– Objective is to develop luminescent polyester films for displays– “Disruptive Technology”– Development facility at CPI

• Progress– £xm project– DTF/CPI contract executed

• A new processing route– Enables highly selective chemistry – Of interest to control particulate formulation– Novel process fluid e.g. water– Can be used to make a wide range of molecules

• Developing collaborative project with several companies, Nottingham University, Newcastle University and others

– Pre-competitive generic development – creating IPR for the partners– Initial programme focusing on water– £xm project– Future one-to-one programmes with other collaborators – catalysis,

hydrogenation



Batch to Continuous Processing

• Significant opportunity:– Cost pressures as margins squeezed– Process & Analytical Technology (PAT) Initiative brings whole

pharmaceutical industry into play

• 4 consortia running or being established:– 5 companies working together with a university based

technology for novel reaction systems– Several companies coming together with CPI to look at heat-

exchange reaction systems– Bioreactor consortium is under development– A consortium is under development to look continuous

precipitation and crystallisation options



Advanced Processing Platform

• Focused on manufacturing routes– More with less – increase capital intensity and variable cost efficiency– Increasing speed of development of new processes– Only making the molecules you want & reducing by-products– “Green” processing

• Vision is to systematically create a multi-purpose demonstration capability:
