Snapshot“Iwant to build up the Thai people to be the champion

for missions in this Southeast Asia region,” says Tharawat (or “Wat”) Suebthayat, director of Wycliffe Thai Foundation. “The Thai church is key to seeing missions, including language work, advance in the region,” says Wat. “We are Thai. We can easily learn neighbouring languages and adjust to their cultures.”

By supporting Wycliffe Thai Foundation—a partner organization of Wycliffe Canada—you are collaborating with local Thai churches in engaging people in all aspects of Bible translation, literacy and Scripture use. Wycliffe Thai Foundation sees Thailand as a natural hub to reach upwards of 200 language communities in restricted Southeast Asian nations that still lack even a word of Scripture in their mother tongue.

Challenges In Thailand, the Christian population is tiny and often persecuted. In Thailand, only 0.5 percent of the population is Christian, immersed among the highly influential and dominant religions. The challenge to reach cultures steeped in Buddhism and animism is immense.

Regions in neighbouring countries are hostile to Christianity.Christians, including translators and some literacy workers, face severe persecution in neighbouring countries. They need support in order to persevere and share the Word of God with people in their own language.

“They [neighbours] destroyed our properties and belongings, and reported to the government officer about us,” says Pong, a national Bible translator. Despite being attacked, Pong hasn’t lost heart. The fire for Christ runs deep in his heart. He says he can’t turn back because his people need the Word of God. “Only God’s Word can penetrate their hearts,” he says.

Wycliffe’s RoleEngage churches and Christians in ThailandIn Thailand, out of 100 individuals in the church engaged with the idea of missions, they find one or two people are called to serve in Bible translation. With this in mind, Wycliffe Thai Foundation offers a broad scope of opportunities. These include:

• Monthly prayer and information evenings;

• Outreach events to share about missions with university students

• Missions training courses for entire church congregations

• Mission exposure through living and serving in a rural village

• Visits for pastors to restricted nations

• Mission conferences, and more

Support and encourage missionaries and believers in neighbouring countries through Café Wycliffe and other initiatives. “I now truly know that Bisu people are not walking alone in our faith in God, but we have brothers and sisters who care and pray for us,” expresses a Bisu sister–one of the 13 believers in her village–after attending a Café Wycliffe event.

Train and send workersThis happens through the “Step Out” short-term engagement program for high school and university students.

Once engaged, Thai Christians can take advantage of more opportunities for internships and short-term service, including outreach projects in local schools; foundational courses in linguistics and culture; cross-cultural training, and serving in an actual Bible translation or literacy project.

“I have a heart for every people group,” explains Por, a former participant. “I want the people groups that I teach to be a good example for my people—to encourage them to love their language and their culture.”

Long-term ServiceGraduates from “Step Out” often feel called by God to serve long term. Wycliffe Thai Foundation invites them to join and dedicate their lives to the Bible translation effort in Southeast Asia. The many opportunities that await them include:

• Bible translation with Wycliffe Thai Foundation personnel in three programs for three nations

• Mother-tongue-based literacy in remote rural communities

• Crafting chronological oral Bible story sets in language groups with oral cultures

“I want to see that in the future [Bible] storytelling will spread like gossip or a rumour!” explains Wat, the director.

ImpactYoung people in Thailand are joining the mission of Bible translation in Southeast Asia In the words of one Kairos missions education seminar participant, Rataphon Thaiyaluk: “I learned the perspective of what God has for His people. They receive His blessings to be a blessing to the nations. This motivated me in following Jesus Christ. I also received encouragement from missionary families serving among the nations. They work so hard and God blesses the people.

I am very thankful to God for giving me this opportunity to get this training. I hope that I will learn more about God’s will in my life and the strategies to serve Him effectively.”

People are learning to read the Bible in their language!Kanya (pseudonym) is a Wycliffe Thai Foundation member working with the Tang (pseudonym) people in another restricted access nation. She says, “I can say now that at least 100 people in the tribe [that I work with] can read the Bible in their language, where before no one could.” She estimates there are more than 1,500 new believers among the Tang over the past five or six years!

Along with working to finish the Tang New Testament, Kanya has also been busy training Tang people to read the Bible in their heart language. Those trained then return home and teach their fellow villagers to read the Good News! She, alongside many others in different regions, teaches literacy via multilingual education.

The Word of God is reaching those who are still Bibleless and illiterateFor example Khun John, Wycliffe Thai’s church relations officer and master storyteller, travelled to a nearby restricted country to help five different language groups learn the art of crafting their own oral Bible stories. A sixth group wanted to attend but, because of severe persecution, they were unable to.

The deep dedication of the participants was evident as they worked hard from morning to evening to craft clear, accurate and natural Bible stories for their people.

Students receiving multilingual education are thriving–even surpassing their peers. “They’re eager to answer the questions,” a teacher explains. “When the school sent them to a competition they got the high score; they won the prize.”

Current project goals1. See the Church in Thailand become mature, generous

and passionate in sending cross-cultural workers to other Southeast Asia nations.

2. Church communities reached are transformed to become churches that are mature, generous and committed to sending missionaries to their neighbours.

3. International partners are linked with local churches and agencies, and serving minority people groups in Southeast Asia.
