1. Introduction Digital Archiving on removable media The XFi le has access to a l l foo tage recorded on EVS v ideo servers through the SDTI ne twork . When a c l ip i s c rea ted on one o f the servers , a copy is au tomat ica l ly t rans fer red to XFi le in the f i le fo rmat se lected in the setup .

Th is copy is a background process, and has a lower p r io r i ty on the network compared to rea l - t ime t rans fers be tween servers for remote p layback , in o rder no t to d is tu rb the l ive product ion in any way. I f the ne twork is no t very busy, the t rans fer to the removable med ia can be per formed severa l t imes fas ter than rea l -t ime. As soon as rea l - t ime t ransfers a re requ i red on the ne twork , the backup process is s lowed down to make enough bandwidth ava i lab le to guarantee these new requests . Each c l ip i s saved as a separate f i le on the removab le med ia , inc lud ing no t on ly v ideo, aud io and t ime code in format ion , bu t a lso a l l metadata assoc ia ted w i th tha t c l ip : name, descr ip to rs , c reat ion date , o r ig ina l loca t ion (server s /n , reg is te r ) , e tc . The t rans fer between an EVS v ideo server to the XF i le is a da ta t rans fer , i .e . no decod ing/encod ing process takes p lace a t any po in t , p reserv ing the or ig ina l qua l i t y o f the footage, inc lud ing super -mot ion charac ter i f app l icab le . The XFi le i s equ ipped wi th 2 removable media , work ing as mir ro red dr ives : each c l ip is automat ica l ly saved as 2 separate f i les on these dr ives . Th is p rov ides a secur i ty copy in case o f d r ive fa i lu re , and a lso g ives the poss ib i l i ty to send these 2 dr ives to 2 d i f feren t loca t ions /s tud ios a f ter the show. Each removable media has a capac i ty o f 750 GB or 64 hours o f footage a t s tandard b i t - ra te . More XF i le s ta t ions can be inser ted on the network i f more arch ive cop ies are requ i red . The XF i le can a lso be used as a secur i ty backup o f the ne twork : should one server lose i ts footage fo r any reason (acc identa l de le te fo r ins tance) , c l ips can be res tored f rom the XF i le to any o ther EVS v ideo server on the ne twork .

A l l Super -mot ion c l ips , c reated on any ne tworked EVS v ideo server , are s to red by XFi le amongst the normal f i les . The 75 fps nature o f such mater ia l is mainta ined dur ing arch iv ing and is res tored in a s ing le pass w i thout a l te ra t ion . There fore , res tored Super -mot ion c l ips can be re-used as Super -mot ion foo tage (p layback a t 33%) or as a s tandard mater ia l (var iab le speed) jus t as i f they where captured f rom the super-mot ion camera jus t now.

2. Software Installation

Important The XFILE 2 .13 ins ta l lers inc lude the XFILE and XSTREAM ins ta l lers , the C l ip In fo Expor ter ins ta l ler , the PCX2 dr ivers and the EVS Logs co l lec tor ins ta l ler . Prior to insta l l XFILE 2 .13 uninsta l l the previous versions of XFILE and XSTREAM.

1. Run XFILE INSTALLER and fo l low the s teps o f the Setup Wizard :

The ins ta l le r inc ludes a reg is t ry key that d isab les the autorun func t ion on USB keys to avo id v i rus in t rus ion .

2. Accept the so f tware l icense agreement .

5. In the Cont igura t ion Parameters w indow, se lect the RESET EXISTING SETTINGS op t ion, i f requ i red, and c l ick Next to cont inue. Th is w i l l rese t a l l opera t iona l parameters ( l i ke SDTI speed, V ideo Standard , da tabase s ize , net name and net number , e tc . ) to de fau l t parameters .

6. In the Ready to Ins ta l l w indow, se lect INSTALL to s tar t the ins ta l la t ion o f the main f i les . A progress bar shows the ac t iv i ty o f f i les t ransfer .

7. The Setup w izard needs to restar t the computer to complete the ins ta l la t ion : se lec t one of the two op t ions and then press Finish to qu i t the ins ta l la t ion process .

A f ter re -s ta r t , the XF i le ins ta l la t ion is successfu l l y completed and a XF i le shor tcu t is saved to your desk top.

3. XFile Module

Note XFi le and XSt ream app l ica t ions work s imu l taneous ly in to 2 separate w indows bu t share the same bandwi th for a l l opera t ions. To access to the XF i le o r XSt ream window se lec t the i tem f rom the taskbar .

3.1 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION The sys tem conf igura t ion w indow is on ly ava i lab le fo r mod i f ica t ions f rom the Star t page before s ta r tup : system parameters are requi red to comple te the boot sequence and to connect to the XNet . Dur ing opera t ions , th is window w i l l be d isp layed in read-on ly mode for in fo rmat ion.

3.1.1 NETWORK SETUP

XFILE IDENTIFICATION ON THE NETWORK Standalone mode Selec t ing th is op t ion a l lows the operator to s tar t the XFi le w i thout be ing connected to the XNet . In th is mode on ly the main tenance mode is ac t ive.

Important The bandwid th, the v ideo s tandard and the Database Size must be ident ica l on a l l machines connected to the XNet . I f one system is conf igured w i th a d i f feren t bandwidth , v ideo s tandard or da tabase s ize, i t w i l l b lock the en t i re ne twork .

Net Name The Net name def ines the mach ine name on the network . Th is name is user-de f ined and can exceed 8 charac ters , but on ly 8 characters w i l l be v is ib le f rom the XNet v iews. Enter ing a Network Name is no t mandatory because a network number is automat ica l ly g iven to the sys tem, but i t i s recommended to name the machines in order to eas i ly ident i fy a l l sys tems connected to XNet .

Net Number Range: [1 … 29] The Net number de f ines the mach ine number on the network . Th is number i s user -de f ined.

COMMON PARAMETERS ON THE XNET NETWORK The va lues de f ined for the fo l lowing parameters need to be the same on a l l EVS v ideo servers on the XNet network.

SDTI Block Size (8MB HighRes/2MB LowRes) This parameter spec i f ies the s ize o f the med ia b locks recorded on the EVS v ideo servers o f the XNet ne twork . In h i - res , the b lock s ize w i l l be 8MB f rom Mul t icam V9.00. In lo- res , the b lock s ize wi l l be 2 MB on EVS v ideo servers ded ica ted to lo- res content .

SDTI Speed (540Mbps / 1485Mbps) This parameter spec i f ies the bandwidth o f the ne twork .

Video Standard (PAL/NTSC) This parameter spec i f ies the v ideo s tandard . NTSC fo rmat is a lso app l icab le fo r HD formats .

Database Size (32000 cl ips) This parameter spec i f ies the maximum number o f c l ips saved to the LSM database.

VarID Unit icy (Global / Local ) This parameter is ava i lab le f rom XFi le vers ion 2.00 . I t spec i f ies a t which leve l the Var ID is un ique:

• Global : the Var ID is un ique a t the XNet network leve l

• Local : the Var ID is un ique at the EVS v ideo server leve l .

VarID Length (8 char / 32 char) This parameter is ava i lab le f rom XFi le vers ion 2 .00 . I t spec i f ies the Var ID length:

• Fixed length o f 8 by tes

• Var iab le length o f 32 by tes

VarID Format (ASCI I / Binary) This parameter is ava i lab le f rom XFi le vers ion 2 .00 . I t spec i f ies the Var ID format :

• ASCII

• Binary

Note The Var ID w i l l on ly be d isp layed in the XF i le app l ica t ion i f th is has the ASCI I fo rmat . Otherwise, the s t r ing <Unicode> w i l l be d isp layed in the Var ID co lumn of the XF i le l i s ts in the var ious XF i le modes.

3.1.2 TRANSFER MODE Three d i f feren t operat iona l modes are ava i lab le : XNet on ly , GBE only and a combined mode GBE + XNet .

Note An SDTI connect ion is s t i l l requ i red in a l l modes to access the data.

XNET ONLY Al l the t ransfers are processed through the XNet .

GBE ONLY Trans fers fo r backup, i .e . backup c l ip , backup t ra in (XSt ream) , and restore opera t ions are processed through the Ethernet ne twork . However , the fo l low ing opera t ions are s t i l l per fo rmed through the XNet : Publ ish, Grab, Render P lay l is t , and data access. That is the reason why an SDTI connect ion is s t i l l requ i red in GBE Only mode.

COMBINED MODE GBE + XNET This combined mode permi ts the t rans fers through the XNet when the Gigab i t ne twork is no t ava i lab le , e .g . in case of d isconnect ion o f one server f rom the Gigab i t network .

3.1.3 BACKUP CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT From XFi le v .2 .00 , seven backup channe ls a re ava i lab le . You w i l l ass ign them accord ing to your backup needs. Two predef ined conf igurat ions are ava i lab le and are descr ibed be low. I f the predef ined conf igura t ions do no t meet your requi rements , you can de f ine a cus tomized conf igura t ion . The backup channel ass ignment w i l l on ly a f fec t the XF i le and XStream backup modes. They wi l l not impact on the Restore, Pub l ish and Main tenance modes.

Generat ing an XML Metadata Fi le

When the AutoBackup Output Parameters > Generate EVS XML Metadata check-box is se lec ted , an XML f i le w i th the metadata o f the c l ips backed up in the au tobackup process is generated . Th is f i le i s c reated at the same t ime as the backup f i le fo r a l l media f i le formats . The c l ips are saved in the same fo lder as the backup f i le . I t has the same name as the backup f i le , fo l lowed by the <.evs.xml> ex tens ion.

Wi th the EVS MXF f i l e fo rmat , the metadata is inc luded in the header o f the media f i le i tse l f . As some systems cannot read the MXF header , i t i s poss ib le to generate an XML metadata f i le for an EVS MXF f i le to ga in access to the metadata. From XFi le vers ion 2 .13 , when changes are made to the metadata, the EVS MXF header and the EVS XML f i les are updated s imu l taneous ly bu t p r ior i ty is g iven to the XML f i le to read the metadata.

Super Motion Backup Mode

Super S low Mot ion (SSLM) c l ips can be ob ta ined by genera t ing a s ing le f low f rom 2 or 3 cameras . So, 2 or 3 p ic tures have the same t imecode and, when a SSLM c l ip i s p layed w i th a l l f rames in the Edi t C l ip module , the durat ion is tw ice (w i th 2 cameras) or three t imes longer and aud io is no more synchron ized. A c l ip p layed a t 100% seems to be p layed a t 50 or 33%. The SuperMotion Backup Mode > All Frames with Desynchronized Audio opt ion enables the backup o f a l l the f rames of the SSLM c l ips w i th the aud io . In th is case, t imecode re fe rence is no t cons is ten t . The SuperMotion Backup Mode > Ream Time (1 /2 or 1 /3 f rames with audio) op t ion backs up 1 f rame over 2 or 3 (depending on the Super Mot ion Rec mode) and keeps the aud io . When the users se lec t the Autobackup mode, the app l icat ion per forms the Scann ing Network process aga in to re t r ieve a l l c l ips to be backed up on the XNet ne twork .

Note This mode MUST be enabled for the user 's > ARCHIVE commands f rom the Mul t i cam systems to be taken in to account .

Thanks to the se lec t ion l is t , the autobackup process is an automat ic and se l f -opera t ing sys tem. When a c l ip i s c rea ted on one o f the se lec ted servers , a copy is au tomat ica l ly t rans fer red to XF i le . However , there are severa l ways to break the synchron iza t ion . The Synchron izat ion funct ion can be used to compare the content o f two fo lders . To do th is , proceed as fo l lows:

3. Cl ick the but ton to move them to the r igh t l is t box wh ich conta ins the se lec t ion o f metadata f ie lds to be inc luded in metadata output f i les .

HARDWARE DESCRIPTION The XFi le so f tware is ins ta l led in a works ta t ion opera t ing under Windows XP Pro . The s tandard sys tem is In te l Core2 Duo E6300 Processor , In te l Motherboard w i th DRAM 1GB and an EVS PCX board.

Note The PCX1 board is not compat ib le w i th XF i le v2 .00 and h igher .

The hardware components o f the XF[2] p la t form ( fo rmer ly ca l led XF i le [2 ] ) a re housed in a 3U rack cab ine t equ ipped w i th 2 x ATA 133 750GB Mobi le Car t r idges .

INSTALLING A NEW HARD DISK The a im of the fo l low ing procedure is to descr ibe how to p lace and fo rmat a new s torage hard d isk in to an XF[2 ] . I t is d iv ided in to three par ts :

3. Disab l ing the D isk Index ing

MOUNTING THE DISK INTO THE CARRIER

1. Conf igure the hard d isk in Master mode. For more de ta i l s , see the sec t ion ‘Hard Disk Conf igurat ion ’ , on page 179.

2 . Connect the car r ier in terna l IDE cab le and p lace the hard d isk in to the d isk t ray , f i x ing i t w i th the four screws (e i ther on the s ide or on the unders ide of the can is te r depending on the model : see p ic tures be low) .

Note EVS st rongly recommends to app ly some g lue , l ike the Loxea l Eng ineer ing Adhes ive (medium thread lock ing) , on the screw- thread.

3. Place the d isk t ray cover , then inser t i t in to the XF [2] .

CREATING A PARTITION ON THE STORAGE DISK

1. From the desktop , r ight c l ick on My Computer and se lec t Manage f rom the contextua l menu. The Computer Management w indow opens.

2 . Selec t Disk Management f rom the Storage sec t ion in the Computer Management t ree v iew. The new d isk w i l l appear as Unkown and Not In i t ia l ized . A red icon is d isp layed nex t to the d isk name.

3. Right c l ick the d isk w i th the red icon and se lect In i t ia l ize Disk f rom the contextua l menu.

HOW TO RE-INSTALL YOUR SYSTEM WITH AN EXISTING IMAGE

1. Reboot the sys tem on Bootab le DVD (or USB key) which is de l ivered w i th the or ig ina l sys tem. On XFILE system, modi fy Boot p r ior i t y in the BIOS set t ings in order to boot on the USB key .

2 . For USB key on ly , se lec t ‘EVS Ghost Backup or Restore ’ in the menu.

3. In the ghost s ta r tup w indow, p ress [ENTER] to open the too lbar .

4. In the next w indow, se lect Loca l / Par t i t ion / F rom Image fo l lowed by [ENTER].

5. In the nex t w indow, press the [TAB] key to se lect the ‘Look in a rea ’ and open the l is t by press ing the [down ar row] key . Se lect the source dr ive : D fa t dr ive (RESTORE) then [ENTER].

6. Selec t the image f i le you want to res tore then [ENTER] .

7. In the nex t w indow, se lec t the Source par t i t ion #1 then [ENTER] .

8. In the next w indow, se lect the Dest ina t ion dr ive #1 then [ENTER]. Press the [TAB] key to se lec t the OK but ton , and then press [ENTER].

9. In the nex t w indow, se lec t the Dest ina t ion par t i t ion #1 then [ENTER]. Press the [TAB] key to se lec t the OK but ton , then press [ENTER].

10. At the message ‘Proceed w i th par t i t ion restore ’ se lect yes then [ENTER].

11. When the process is complete press [ENTER] . Se lec t Qui t then [ENTER], then Yes and [ENTER].

12. Remove the DVD d isk (or USB key) and reboot the sys tem.

10. Selec t ‘Compress h igh ’ , then [ENTER].

12. When the process is complete press [ENTER] . Se lec t Qui t then [ENTER], then Yes and [ENTER].
