    Trunnion Bushing Replacement

IMPORTANT: It is recommended that the trailer be unloaded

    before beginning service procedures.

Always chock tires to prevent rollawayserious injury or death could occur.

    1. Support vehicle frame with adequate jack stands.Set jackstand height at approximately 2 (51mm) above the

suspensions specified ride height (tires just off the floor).

Always refer to the trailer manufacturersapproved method of raising the trailer. If

jack stands are used, they must be of sufficient strength andpositioned according to OEM recommendations. Failure touse approved jack pad locations may cause the trailer tofall, resulting in damage to trailer and/or serious personalinjury or death. Never use the axle or suspension componentsto raise the trailer.

    2. Remove the nuts, bolts, trunnion rubber cap, and equalizer

beams from the trunnion connection (FIGURE 6).

NOTE: For quad-axle suspension, carefully remove ring atthe end of trunnion tube.

    3. Remove trunnion bushing.Inspect all parts for excessive

wear prior to re-assembling the new trunnion bushing. If

excessive wear exists, replace the worn part, and install the

    new trunnion bushing.

    4. Re-assemble the trunnion connection making sure the

trunnion bushing is centered in the trunnion cap and

spring saddlethen tighten the connection.Torque to

specified lubricated torque of 280 ft. lbs.

NOTE: When replacing rubber part, make sure the rubber

is not pinched.Metal parts must be metal-to-metalwhen applying torque.

    5. Remove jack stands.

    AXLE ALIGNMENT

    1. To properly align the suspension attached to your trailer,

make sure there are no binds in the suspension.

    2. Alignment can be achieved with an optical device designed

especially for this purpose or manually by the following

manner: Measure the distance from the king pin to the center

line of the spindles on the front axles. It is recommended

that spindle extensions be utilized.Dimensions A and B

must be equal within 1/8 (3mm).Dimension E is equal

to the distance between the trailer center line and the axle

    center line (FIGURE 11).

    3. Align front axle to the kingpin by shifting the trunnion

clamps on the frame bracket and tighten bolts securely.

    4. Align second axle to the front axle using the radius rods.

    5. Align third and fourth axles by shifting the trunnion clamps

following the same procedure as the first axle on the frame

bracket and tighten bolts securely.Variance in Aand B

dimensions would indicate axle alignment discrepancies.

bushing is centered in the trunnion cap and spring saddle

before tightening the connection.Torque to specified lubricated

    torque of 280 ft. lbs.

NOTE: Ensure that rubber parts are not pinchedbetweenmetal components.

    9. Realign axles to kingpin (refer to the axle alignment

procedure).Weld the trunnion clamp in place following

    the directions provided.

    PRE-OPERATIONAL CHECKLIST

Prior to placing unit in service, check thefollowing items:

Always block tires to prevent rollawayserious injury or death could occur.

    1. Check the trunnion clamp welding to the frame bracket for

    proper welding (FIGURE 12).

    2. Make sure the frame bracket bracing is in place and properlywelded (FIGURE 12).

    3. Make sure guide channels are in place (FIGURE 14, 15 & 16)

    and welded (FIGURE 13).

    4. Check the axle connection welding.Welding must be in

accordance with NS-65-103. For all other models welding

must be in accordance with NS-65-07.

    5. Make sure all nuts have been torqued to specifications.
