Last week, we finished our unit on clothes. Miss Bousha's class took a "field trip" to the washing machine. Everybody got a turn to put some laundry in the washer. When they were done, the children folded the clothes.

On Thursday night, April 30th, we had a parent meeting. The parents were able to

City Park

make and take different math games to play with their children.

This week, we are starting on our theme called "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." The children will explore how we can recycle and then look at different things that are made from recycled items. All of our classes will be talking about "What do people throw away". They will be doing different art projects with recycled materials. They will also be reading a variety of stories that are about recycling.

To our parents of graduating children: If your child is going to our Home Garden's site next year, please call Rocio at our enrollment office to make an appointment to sign your child up. Her phone number is 951-734-7036. If you have any questions, you can ask Miss Martha.

STATE, FIRST FIVE, FULL DAY: This week in State, we will be investigating different trees from around the world and from our own site! The children will be creating art using objects from nature such as palm trees, redwood and oak. We will be discussing why certain trees only grow in certain states and areas around the world. They will investigate the trees from our site and try to guess which type of tree it is, and what it needs in order to grow nice and healthy. CALVERT: In the beginning of the month of May, the we will begin a two week adventure with farming! During this first week, the children will be introduced to the animals that live at the farm and the sounds that the farm animals make. To further their understanding on farms, we will be doing arts and crafts, like making a horse, a sheep, a rooster, a farmer and a barn. We have supplied the children with books that will support the theme of Farm, and we will be singing songs such as “The Farmer and the Dell.” Our color of the week is Red, and we are excited to get this week started!

Main Y SCHOOL AGE: This week in the School-Age classroom we are learning about plants. We will be learning about the plant growth cycle and how to keep and preserve a plant. We will be learning about the many types of plants can grow (especially in California) and also the most important part…the seeds!! The kids will be participating in science experiments with seeds and creating crafts and poems on the subject.

First 5 Toddlers – This week, our class will be working on a family theme. We will be doing chalk art, tissue paper art, handprint art, using family finger puppets, reading books that incorporate families, and have a share day using a family picture from home.

State Toddlers – We will be using plastic flowers to paint with as well as leaves and acorns and other items found on our playground to make spring flowers. We will also be using baby gel, baby soap, baby lotion, food coloring and kool aid. We will be working on shapes as well: triangle, circle and square. Children will be sorting flowers by color.

Preschool 1 – This week our class will be learning about buildings. We will be learning about what different types of buildings, what they are used for, and what people inside could be doing. We will also be creating arts and crafts using some plastic tools like hammer wrench and screws. We will be reading stories that have homes in them like “The Three Little Pigs.”

Preschool 2 – This week our preschool class will be continuing our study on balls. We will be making bubbles for bubble painting. Children will also be making a storyboard for the “Three Little Pigs.” For our outdoor activities we will be having a balloon toss, play a game of soccer, and we will be having a sphere hunt.

Preschool 3- This week we will be introducing the study of building to the children. What is our building made of? What holds it up? We will be looking up buildings in magazines and cutting them out to make a collage. We will also be tracing a shadow of a building and making buildings out of paper bags.

School Age – Children will continue working in small groups by age to come up with 3D art project relating to science. Children will be planning art projects and begin to put together a list of materials. Children will be playing games in small groups such as dominoes and checkers. We will play soccer outside.

This week, we are continuing our study on Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse. Each class is using a variety of materials to help the children, learn and explore what it means to recycle, reduce, and reuse. The children will have several opportunities to create something new and creative. They will learn how trash is valuable, if you put an effort to create something new with it. The teachers will ask the children several open ended questions to assist the children with their process in understanding why it is important for people to recycle and reuse. They will learn how to use materials in new ways. They will use empty boxes of different sizes, and make something new, working together, while learning how to problem solve. By using their own imaginations they can take pride in what they created together. How does trash and garbage affect our community, if

we do not throw it away inside the trash cans? The

children will learn about taking care of their

community by throwing trash away inside the trash cans. Another questions for the children is should we throw paper out the window of a car or building? The

children will listen to a poem called, “The Litter Monster,” from our mighty minutes activities. The

children will learn what the word littering means, and

why it is not good to litter.

The children will learn about

using a trash can for trash. The children will be asked, if we went for a walk around the park in our

community what kinds of trash do you think we will find? How many different

kinds of trash can we list that we will find in our community? The children will listen to the story, Don’t Lose It, Reuse

It, by Nancy Williams, and they will draw a picture of what they liked in the story and what they can reuse from the story.
