Yancey County is nestled in the scenic mountains of western North Carolina, just 35 miles northeast of Asheville. We

are surrounded by beauty; our northwestern border is the Appalachian Mountain Ridge, while the southeastern boundary is outlined by America’s favorite drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Home of Mount Mitchell — the highest peak in the eastern United States, at 6,684 feet — we are the place to

come for grand mountain views, as the aver-age elevation here is 2,817 feet — the highest average in the state. Total land area for Yancey County is 311 square miles.

US Highway 19E, the major east-west route in the county, and Highway 226, which skirts our northeastern border, easily pro-vide transportation in and out of the area.

Interstate 26 creates easy access to the Tennessee border.

By the mid-1700s, independent and sturdy Scottish, English, and Irish settlers of the Carolina frontier

had crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains and settled the Toe River Valley of North Carolina.

In December 1833, the state General Assembly established a new western county to be named in honor of distin-guished statesman Bartlett Yancey. As a U.S. Congressman (1813–1817) and as speaker of the North Carolina Senate (1817–1827), he was instrumental in creating an educa-tion fund that was the beginning of the NC Public School System.

In March 1834, John Bailey conveyed 100 acres of land for the county seat of this new county, which had been formed from sections of Burke and Buncombe counties. Capt. Otway Burns, a naval hero of the War of 1812, was serving in the General Assembly at the time of the vote, and the county seat was named for him. A statue of Burns stands in the center of the town’s public square, donated by the captain’s grandson. The inscription reads in part: “Otway Burns, North Carolina’s Foremost Son in the War of 1812, for him this town is named — He Guarded Well Our Seas, Let Our Mountains Honor Him.”

Yancey County Schools has an extraordinary school system focused on developing “Future Ready Students for the 21st Century.” A founda-tional element in their continuous progress rests in their vision — simply, “Excellence.”

Yancey County has a total of nine public schools: six elementary, two middle, and one high school, with a total enrollment of approximately 2,500 students. Class sizes, kindergarten through grade eight, are consis-tently low, averaging 21 students.

Yancey County Schools is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, the highest honor a school system can receive. All instructional staff follow the state’s standard course of study, which is developed for all grade levels and course offerings.

A range of outstanding academic pro-grams and courses are offered to target all student needs, including regular core courses, honors, advanced placement, early college, exceptional children, academically gifted

classes, and career and technical training. The arts and foreign language, including band, strings, chorus, visual and performing arts, and Spanish, are integral programs that offer creative expression and cultural opportunities for students.

The Yancey Evening School provides for high school students who are unable to pursue a diploma in the traditional manner. Three licensed staff provide instruction and direction for these students.

The Yancey County School Foundation awards an average of $10,000 annually in mini-grants for enhancement of classroom instruction. The school system collaborates extensively with the Regional Education Center as well as colleges and universities to assist with the professional growth and development of teachers and administrators.

Overall, the extraordinary performance by students can be attrib-uted to a strong core of dedicated teachers, administrative staff, parents and school community citizens.

Mayland Community College provides excellent opportunities for individuals who wish to earn a degree, diploma, or certificate; com-plete a GED; learn new occupational skills; take a personal-interest class; or start a business. Currently more than 7,000 students are served through curriculum and continuing-education programs. Mayland students can also choose from a wide variety of distance-edu-cation courses, including online courses, interactive television classes, telecourses, and hybrid classes.

Mayland Community College offers associate degrees in a number of subjects, including business administration, computer engineering technology, computer information technology, cosmetology, criminal justice, early childhood education, electronics engineering technology, horticulture, hotel/restaurant management, human services, medical assisting, registered nursing, and office systems technology. Located on campus, The Sam Phillips Center Auditorium hosts a range of pleasing performances and presentations throughout the year, including musi-cal groups, guest lecturers, and special events.

Mayland also serves economic devel-opment needs in the county through custom-ized training programs, designed to assist in recruiting new business and industry as well as growing existing businesses and industries.

Our library is currently housed in the historic Citizens Bank Building, located on the Town Square of Burnsville. The library system offers access to over 170,000 volumes. In addition, the library’s array of services includes programs for children and adults, bookmobile and outreach services for the homebound and handicapped, and public high-speed Internet access.

Renovation plans are under way to relocate the library in the historic Yancey Collegiate Institute.

Staff members utilize a core group of volunteers to assist them in determining the most relevant issues affecting individuals, families, and communities. The staff works side-by-side with local officials, lay advisors, volunteers, and grassroots organizations to achieve common educational goals.

LocationYancey County is nestled in the diverse

forests and lofty mountains of western North Carolina. The county shares its northwestern Appalachian Mountain Ridge with Tennessee. The scenic Blue Ridge Parkway outlines Yancey’s southeastern boundary.

Burnsville is about 35 miles northeast of Asheville. Charlotte, the state’s largest metrop-olis, lies about 125 miles southeast of the county. Johnson City, Tennessee, lies about

50 miles to the west. The county’s major east-west thoroughfare is US 19.

TopographyLand area is 311 square miles.

ClimateSummer mornings in the county can be

humid, creating a dreamy haze across the Blue Ridge and Black Mountains. Summertime highs usually peak in the mid-80s, while

evening temperatures dip to the comfortable 50s. Average annual rainfall is 59 inches. Children also delight in the winter snows, which interrupt the school schedule from time to time (snows range from less than an inch to a foot or more).

views. Skiing, golfing, hiking, biking, horse-back riding, canoeing, tubing, camping, fish-ing, and hunting contribute to a delightful selection of adventures of fun.

The Burnsville Town Center is the premier destination for many cultural and community activities. From toe-tapping musical concerts to actors in plays, this area is host to a wealth of entertainment of all types. Many events and festivals are showcased on Burnsville’s beautiful Town Square, including the historic Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair, which has taken place the first Friday and Saturday of each August for more than 50 years.

ReligionToday, more than 100 churches provide a

foundation of faith for the residents of Yancey County. Like much of North Carolina, the Baptist community has the largest congrega-tion, yet an array of religions are represented throughout the region.

Many of the county’s earliest churches and community cornerstones still mark the

rural landscape. The pioneer churches often occupied a distinct, picturesque position on the grassy knolls and steep hillsides of this mountain region.

GovernmentYancey County provides many essential

services for its residents, including social ser-vices, public health and transportation, recre-ation, recycling, mapping projects, building inspections, and emergency response efforts. Equally important, Yancey County contrib-utes at least 25 percent of the funding for its public schools.

Yancey County’s Board of Commissioners is comprised of five elected officials. The board hires a county manager to direct general operations and to administer board policies. An elected mayor and a four-person Town Board govern the Town of Burnsville.
