What is the impact on Simon’s life? • Research suggests that 17 missed school days
in a year = a GCSE grade drop (DFES). • An improvement in attendance by 1% will see
a 5% improvement in attainment (DFES)• The greater the attendance the greater the
achievement.

Year 10 in a fortnight • Students may think they have got forever BUT look at how many
hours of lessons they actually have over this year:
Options: 5 hours every two weeks (13.5 days per subject)Core: English 8 hours every two weeks (22 days)
Maths 7 hours every two weeks (19 days)Science 9 hours every two weeks (24 days)
• Due to time constraints you will often only cover each topic once.• Learning it first time around is the key to successful revision and
exam results.

Changes to assessment in English and Maths• Grading for GCSEs has changed. A* to C will no longer be
how achievement is measured.
• A new 9 grade scale will be created with 9 representing the top grade.
• Grade 5 will be about half to two thirds higher than that required for a C. (this is likely to become the new sought after level).

• Section A (20%) – ReadingUnderstanding of one extract (about 60-100 lines) of literature from the 20th century assessed through a range of structured questions.
• Section B (20%) – Prose WritingOne creative writing task selected from a choice of four titles.

Overview of changes at GCSE• This year there are no changes at GCSE.• Students will continue with our present
courses until they are examined at in Summer 2016.
• Next year, new GCSE Science exams will be introduced for current year 9.

• Double Science students will sit 4 exams at the end of year 11.
• There are two GCSES: Core Science ( based on year10 work) and Additional Science (based on year 11 work)
• Each of these GCSEs is examined separately in two exams.• Each exam will contain questions about Biology, Chemistry
and Physics• There will also be two pieces of controlled assessment. Each
will contribute to one exam.

• Cambridge Nationals students• These students are studying towards a qualification of which
25% is based upon an exam.• The other 75% is awarded as a result of written assignments

year 11.• These students will sit an exam in year 10.
