The Golden Rule

We expect all students to follow our GOLDEN RULE:

Shirley High School students are expected to show consideration and respect to all members of the school and local community at all times.

• We believe that students will be successful if they focus on their ABC:– Attendance– Behaviour– Commitment

Attendance and Punctuality

• The biggest barrier to achievement in year 11 is non-attendance (including poor punctuality). Please get in touch as soon as possible if there are any issues concerning attendance.

Behaviour Policy

• Our new Behaviour Policy can be found on the school website along with our Attendance and Punctuality; Assessment, Recording and Reporting, and Homework policies.

• These new policies are designed to ensure improved consistency across the school.

• Please take the time to read these documents.

Uniform• Tie, jumper (and skirts for girls)

should be bought from Hewitts.• We ask you to follow the school

uniform policy to ensure uniform is consistent throughout the school.

• Plimsolls and trainers are not part of the school uniform. Students wearing incorrect footwear will be asked to change.

• Year 11 students do NOT need to wear blazers, but if they choose not to, they must wear a jumper instead.

• Hats and hoodies should not be worn on the school site at any time and will be confiscated. This is for the safety of all members of the school community.

Student Planners

• Students are expected to have their student planner with them at all times.

• Planners must be produced immediately if requested by any member of staff.

• The planner is the simplest form of home/school communication. Please check it regularly and contact your son/daughter's tutor if you have any concerns.

Expectations

• We expect ALL students will achieve 5 A* -C GCSE grades by the end of Year 11.

• Attainment grades in Key stage 3 show this is possible

• This can only be achieved if students, staff and parents work together.

Standards and AchievementHow do we do it – strategies that deliver success for all?

– PiXL (Performance in Excellence) membership x 700+ = schools– Our targets for students come from ‘FFT D’ estimates (top 25% Nationally) note

‘school’s actual 2013 results = value added factor – FFTD – 85% (5+ A* - C passes) actual 99.4% = +14.4% factor and FFTD 63% inc. English and Maths, actual 63%

– Individual One to one meetings with students x 3 per year to review progress. The Year 11 students will have their 4th 1:1 meeting with me the week beginning 7th Oct. Note preparation sheets.

– We issue grade reports x 3 per year to monitor and report progress which we internally monitor on a further 3 occasions per year. We state ‘current performance’ and FFT D estimates – all parties should know where their child was at the end of Year 10.

– In addition we offer: One to one and small group teaching and support, additional lessons afterschool, bespoke timetables, and a whole school commitment to achieving success.

Standards and AchievementKey Points - continued:

– We focus on reporting ‘indicative’ grades i.e. A3, A2, A1– We focus on a minimum of two sub-levels progression per year e.g.

• Student ‘A’ in July of Year 10 = B1 for English• Student ‘A’ in July of Year 11 = A2 for English

– We expect students to: complete all set homework, read and action all assessment comments by their teachers (reference research done by John Hattie), attend extra classes, complete all classwork and ask for help.

– To support their studies all Year 11 students will issued with a special USB stick which will have the Year slogan on it.

Standards and Achievement

Key Events coming up to note:– October 7th unveiling of the Year 11 logo to students incorporating

their slogan– Mock exams the week beginning 18th November – Year 11 reports being written the week 2nd December– Summative data collection the week 9th December – the outcomes of

which will form the 1st grade report to parents/carers with a clear indication if their child is ‘on target / below target / above target’.

– Early January: reports sent home and the school will be hosting a Mock GCSE Results Assembly re: August 2014.
