Welcome to Year 11 Year 11 is one of the most important years of your daughter’s school life so far. This year she will find that she has to organise herself more than ever before. There will be Controlled Assessment tasks to complete and deadlines to meet. This will have to be balanced with revision time. This booklet is designed to help parents to support their daughters in the year ahead. We have included dates for the Controlled Assessments and an overview of the Summer Examination period. Across the year we will be supporting students to achieve their best. Subject Teachers will provide feedback on progress through the Progress Summaries. We hold our Open Evening for those students aspiring to our Sixth Form in November. Our Sixth Form has been growing in success in recent years. We have a variety of courses from traditional A2 subjects to a number of vocational Level 3 courses. This booklet contains information about entry requirements to the Sixth Form so that your daughter is able to begin to consider her progression options. In December, students will complete their Internal Examinations. These will help students to learn how well they cope with a number of examinations in a short space of time. More importantly, they will allow Subject Teachers to identify areas where a student has struggled with their understanding or in answering particular types of questions. The Internal Examinations begin on 2 December and will run for two weeks. Internal examinations are marked over the Christmas period and we have an Internal Results Day in January where students are given their results in an envelope to simulate the August experience. This has been successful in the past in providing a motivating experience and to help re-focus the mind after the Christmas break. Last year 85% of our Year 11 students achieved grade 4 and above in English and 80% in Mathematics. This came about through a great deal of hard work from both students and staff here at Windsor Girls’ School and we look forward to continuing to build on our success. Your daughter will be given the opportunity to attend additional revision and support session across the year. During the Summer Examination period, we encourage students to come in before their examinations for a ‘Banana Breakfast’ or a ‘Banana Brunch’. These are designed so that students can access last minute examination technique tips, be confident and relaxed when they enter their examination and so that they can have a bit of brain food. Finally, the booklet contains all of the email addresses for Subject Teachers across the school. We encourage you to email your daughter’s teacher directly if you have any concerns regarding an aspect of her progress this year.

Controlled Assessment Deadlines and Examinations Dates Science The new Science qualifications are linear which means that our students will sit all of their examinations at the end of Year 11. Combined Science Students in Sets 3-7 will be studying towards the GCSE Combined Science, following the AQA specification. This is worth two GCSEs so the students will have two grades for Science (9-1). For Combined Science, students will sit six examination papers which will consist of multiple choice questions, structured questions, open response questions and also questions that have short, closed answers. At least 20% of the total marks for GCSE Combined Science will test students on their mathematical skills. There is no coursework component; however the course requires students to complete 21 core practical investigations, 15% of the total marks will be for questions which are based on the students understanding of the activities.

Triple Science Students in Sets 1 and 2 will study towards the Triple Science qualification, following the AQA specification. This is worth three GCSEs and the students will receive three grades for Science (9-1). For each Science, students will have to complete 8 required practical activities (24 in total), which will form the basis of questions that are worth 15% of the total marks. Students will also be tested on their mathematical skills, which will form 20% of the total mark in Chemistry, 10% of the total marks in Biology and 30% of the total marks in Physics. Physics

Mathematics All students will sit three externally assessed papers at the end of Year 11. These will consist of one non-calculator and two calculator papers. Each paper will be one and a half hours long. The foundation papers will be graded from 1 - 5, and the higher papers are from 4 - 9. It is essential that all students have a scientific calculator. English All students will sit both English Language and English Literature at the end of Year 11. There is no coursework assessment. Both Language and Literature are assessed by end of course examinations. English Language has two examinations each worth 50% of the total mark. Both papers assess reading and writing skills and use extracts from fiction and non-fiction texts. (In addition, students will be awarded a speaking and listening grade. This grade does not count towards the GCSE grade but it is compulsory to complete this assessment). English Literature also has two examinations: Paper 1 (40%) - Shakespeare and the 19th century novel (Texts: Romeo and Juliet and The Sign of the Four - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) Paper 2 (60%) - Modern Drama and Poetry (Texts: An Inspector Calls and the AQA Poetry Anthology). It is important for students to have their own copies of the Literature set texts. A letter will be sent home with details of which set texts to purchase.

Controlled Assessment at GCSE – Information Paper As you will be aware, some of your daughter’s GCSE courses contains an element known as Controlled Assessment. This information sheet provides you with a brief outline of Controlled Assessments and indicates how they operate at Windsor Girls’ School. What is controlled assessment

A form of internal assessment which replaced the coursework component.

Tasks are set by examination awarding bodies – teachers choose from a wide range of tasks set by examination boards. Each subject has Controlled Assessment tasks integrated into the Scheme of Work.

Controlled Assessment tasks are taken in lesson time and supervised by the class teacher or invigilator. The tasks are completed in examination conditions. Students are given the appropriate examination concessions that they are entitled to for all Controlled Assessment tasks. Tasks are marked by teachers using examination board mark schemes or criteria. All internally marked work is moderated within the subject area. Examination boards carry out an external moderation process to ensure consistency of marking across all schools. Why do only some subjects have controlled assessment GCSE examinations fall into three categories: 100% external examination – no controlled assessment. Students sit all units at the end of Year 11. Subjects in this category are English Literature, English Language, Modern Foreign Languages, Geography, History, Ethics and Mathematics. 75% external / 25% controlled assessment – there is an aspect of controlled assessment. 40% external / 60% controlled assessment – there is a major element of controlled assessment throughout the course. The remaining 40% is examined at the end of Year 11. Assessment changes All GCSE Subjects are now linear and assessment happens at the end of Year 11. At Windsor Girls’ School we have a risk management policy in place to ensure that all controlled assessments are managed and carried out according to JCQ requirements. This policy is on our website.

Revision — Basic guide

Before you start: Make sure you have a suitable place where you can revise. Ideally, it should be

quiet and away from the TV, and you should have a table or desk to lean on. Treat yourself to some new stationery – flashcards, post-it notes, coloured pens,

highlighters, new note-pads, ANYTHING that will sustain your interest and help to keep you focused and organised.

Sort out all your books for each subject and organise them so that you do not

waste any time looking for things. When you come to a revision session in school, bring all your books for that subject so that you have everything you need in front of you.

You may usually work listening to music or with the TV on in the background, but

you will not be able to do so in your examinations. Practice working in a quiet environment so that you get used to it.

Revision — How should I do it?

Revision is all about storing information in your memory, keeping it there and then being able to access it when you need it. The first step is understanding. If you do not understand the topic, you will not be able to store it in your head and use it in your examination. So, read through all your notes and make sure you understand the work you need to learn. Explain it to another person – if you can’t explain it, you don’t understand it yourself. The second step is memorising. If you understand the subject or topic you are dealing with, you will naturally remember some of it without a lot of work, like a plot in a play or book. To memorise one random idea, like vocabulary and definitions, dates in history, or scientific ideas you might need to use special techniques to help you remember them. Some ideas are listed below. The third step is revising. This is when you repeatedly go over what you already understand and are memorising so that the information gets stored securely in your brain ready for when you need it.

So, revision is the last part of the process. The memorising is the bit that will take the time and is quite a personal thing, so look at the list overleaf and identify ideas that appeal to you. Try to use different techniques and methods to make memorising varied and interesting.

Page 12: Year 11 Partnership Evening 2019fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/... · 2019-09-25 · progress through the Progress Summaries. We hold our Open Evening for

Some ideas: Make flashcards. These are really good for learning vocabulary and important dates. Write the word on one side of the card and its meaning on the other, or write the event on one side and the date on the other. Test yourself first and then get a friend or rel-ative to test you. Create ‘mind maps’ or diagrams that allow you to put all the ideas related to one topic together onto one page. Use coloured pens to draw attention to the most important points. Use ‘trigger’ words. Go through your work and make notes for each topic. Then make the notes shorter by cutting down the words used. Then cut the words down again and again until you have what are called ‘trigger’ words – words that trigger loads of other ideas and concepts. Make lists and learn the lists by turning the list into images and making a story that connects the images. The more unusual the story, the better chance you have of remembering it. Practice doing things. Practice mathematical processes, practice speaking and writing in foreign languages, practice writing essays, practice answering examination-style questions. Stick to strict timings, encourage a friend to do the same and then swap work so that you have someone else to look at what you have achieved. When it comes to it, sometimes you just have to keep repeating things, reading them again and again, making notes over and over again, drawing diagrams repeatedly, to help you commit the things you need to know to your memory. Sometimes there are no shortcuts and you just have to allow enough time to learn things well and then revise them. This is when good planning is crucial.
