Knowledge Organisers in SRS

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are currently in the process of reviewing the content of our curriculum to ensure there is a much greater emphasis on the ‘sticky knowledge’ (knowledge that we want children to remember) that children need in order to not only truly understand concepts, but also to enable them to apply the knowledge, offer informed explanations, make links and spot patterns.

We have looked at each subject and identified the essential knowledge that we feel the children need to know. Following this we have produced ‘Knowledge Organisers’ which are ‘go-to’ documents outlining the essential knowledge that teachers will be covering across a unit of work; including dates, key vocabulary, definitions, diagrams and other key information.

These ‘Knowledge Organisers’ will be shared with pupils and parents with the aim that everyone knows exactly what is being taught, and what the children need to learn.

Attached to this letter is the ‘Knowledge Organiser’ for the Autumn 1 scheme of work for Topic, Maths and Science which the Year 2 pupils are covering this term. If you are a parent of a child in Year 2, please feel free to use these as reference guides for what your child is learning, and as an opportunity to discuss the facts about the topics and how much they have learned. They can also be used to see if they are able to start making links or offer explanations about the world around them.

We will continue to develop the use of Knowledge Organisers and the plan is to produce them for all of our subjects (2 per term). We welcome your views and any suggestions you may have on this initiative.

What’s on the Menu?

Our topic this half term is ‘What’s on the Menu?’

We will be teaching this in our weekly topic lessons. This half term we are focusing on geography skills and knowledge.

The children will be learning all about their locality and will use a map to locate where they live. They will learn geographical vocabulary to help them describe the world around them. The children will learn the names

of the different continents and will find out what food grows best there. In our lessons the children will find out about where we get our food from in Dubai. As part of this topic, we will learn about how different foods grow best in different climates and will learn all about foods that enjoy a desert

climate.

Key Vocabulary

World This is the earth and all those who live on it.

Continents are one of the earth's seven major areas of land. The continents are Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Country is a large area of land where people live under the same government or have the same culture; nation.

City is a large and important town where many people live and work.

Area is a place or region.

Emirate the territory ruled by an emir.

Climate the usual weather conditions in a place.Antarctica has a cold climate.

Desert a very dry, sandy area with few or no plants growing in it.

Tradition the handing down of a culture's beliefs and customs from parents to children over many years.

distances, I would jog if I was running a long way.

There are 5 types of jumps they are bounce, hop, spring, step and jump

To jump further and higher I bend my knees and use my arms

If I want to throw further I use an over arm throw and more power

Warming up is important – warming up stops me hurting my muscles.

Sticky Knowledge There are 4 whistle commands, 1 blow=stop 2blows = stop and come to

the side of the pool, 3 blows= exit the pool quickly and safely, 4 blows= teacher or lifeguard entering the pool.

The breathing I use during front crawl is three strokes and a breath

If I’m helping someone out of the pool I must be on my knees for balance

Making my body streamlined helps me to travel faster

Treading is a way of staying afloat keeping your head above the water (safety)

The names of the four strokes are front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly
