Year 2 Works continue on the Joint Venture
We are in to our fourth month of Year 2 works with the majority of enabling works almost complete. On the Network Main, only a few accesses remain to be constructed, river flumes are complete for now, fencing is on-going, pre-construction drainage is underway and soil stripping has begun. Stringing out of pipe has also begun with welding to commence imminently.
On the Raw Water Aqueduct, work continues on Year 1 pipe laying. Thankfully, a spell of good weather has seen this section progress well over the last couple of weeks. The team are gearing themselves up for a succession of road closures around the Isel and Blindcrake area. Work is also progressing well at Sheep Dog Field in anticipation for the tunnelling work. Access construction has recommenced to facilitate all the tunnelling sections across the job.
To date, there is approximately 12,030m of pipe installed across the project and 3,000m of ducting.

Health & Safety Initiatives
Project exceeds 692 days no lost time injuries
The FRB Directors have backed a safety campaign which promotes no
lost time injuries. For every quarter that this is achieved, 3 x £300 High
Street vouchers will be up for grabs.
The lucky winners of the ‘no lost time’ draw were Graham Hoey
(Farrans), Mikele Lee (Roadbridge) and Danny Edwards (Roadbridge).
The winners each received a £300 voucher for Tesco. The vouchers
were presented by Kevin Corley (Farrans Director) and John Parr
(United Utilities Construction Delivery Manager).
Well done to all who are involved in keeping all who work on the
project safe.
SAFETY
OBSERVATIONS
All safety
observations
completed will
be entered into
a fortnightly
draw. The
person whose
observation card
is drawn out will
receive a £25
high street
voucher.
We are
confident this
will stimulate a
proactive
approach to
health and
safety.
CHS Assessments
The Chest, Heart & Stroke charity attended site to carry out health
assessments from 24th—27th April. 27 personnel took part in this.
Key Dates: Team development workshop will be held on the 6th June for the FRB and UU
management teams.
Environmental Update: Amphibian Rescue at Dodd Wood
FRBJV has successfully completed a rescue of amphibians over the past month during the toad breeding season. The reason that this activity was undertaken, was to ensure suc-cessful migration from the forested area that is Dodd wood, across the site easement to reach the breeding ground at Bassenthwaite Lake. Due to the change in topography as a result of soil stripping and pipe laying activities, and the implementation of silt fencing along the site easement, the amphibians were not able to reach the breeding ground. This increased the risk of amphibian mortality, as the animals would attempt to return to Dodd wood and thus re-cross the A595.
As a mitigation method, site operatives were trained to pick up the amphibians from the site easement and silt fencing, record the number of rescued specimens, any mortalities, and assist the toads by placing them on the Bassenthwaite Lake side of the easement. From the 22th of March until the 25th of April 2018, a total of 117 amphibians were res-cued.
This endeavour was an example of a successful collaboration between FRBJV, United Util-ities, West Cumbria River Trust, and local citizen scientists.
Best Practice
Farrans Roadbridge are keen to make sure we capture and recognise good customer service from our team. We are rolling out a monthly Customer Champion, the winner of which will receive a High Street voucher worth £50.
We already log any positive feedback from the public but we also want your input into
any good practice. This could be by way of one of the team helping with an issue on site
to assist a resident or landowner or a good practice that improves how we reduce the
impact of our works on the general public.
If you have any examples of good customer service please either fill in the forms that will be left in reception or contact Colette or Jenny with details.
A new Customer Care Initiative
Farrans Roadbridge received a commendation of
Best Practice from United Utilities following the
successful delivery of 51 loads of 900mm
diameter RWA pipes over a two week period.
This was a total of 204 pipes.
All loads were escorted by vehicle convoys,
flashing beacons illuminated and clear traffic
management on the vehicle convoys from
Workington Port to the Northern Compound.
The off-loading of materials was also recognised
as being tidy and the pipe stacked in a secure
location and off loaded in a safe manner.
United Utilities have thanked FRB for all their
efforts in achieving the year one TLM key dates
which allowed them to meet their ODI
commitments for year one works on the West
Cumbria project.
Well done to everyone involved.
FRB and UU have been invited to attend the Keswick Scout Camp at Bassenthwaite Lake over the Bank Holiday weekend. We will be providing disposable bottles for the Scouts and Beavers to use to minimise the need for plastic cups.
