have studied:

In class you have been developing three key reading skills – understanding, inference and deduction.

Use these skills to answer the following questions on this short piece of writing. Write in full sentences.

Jane walked into the house and slammed the door. She stared around the familiar hallway, placing her umbrella in the stand and hanging her soaking coat onto the peg. The lamplight coming from the room at the end of the hallway provided just enough light for her to find her way along; passing the elaborate staircase under the chandelier and by the paintings that adorned the immaculately decorated walls. As Jane approached the room she became increasingly aware of the silence that filled the house. It wasn’t until she got to the doorway that she saw exactly what had caused the silence. Her mouth fell open.

1. How does Jane feel and how do you know:

TASK 2 DATE SET: DUE IN:

READING: Tone, Mood and Atmosphere – Selecting Evidence

Writers often use language to create a certain atmosphere for their reader. Read the following poem and highlight

any important words which you think help create that tone and atmosphere.

LONDON

I wandered through each chartered street,

Near where the chartered Thames does flow,

A mark in every face I meet,

Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

In every cry of every man,

In every infant's cry of fear,

In every voice, in every ban,

The mind-forged manacles I hear:

How the chimney-sweeper's cry

Every blackening church appals,

And the hapless soldier's sigh

Runs in blood down palace-walls.

But most, through midnight streets I hear

How the youthful harlot's curse

Blasts the new-born infant's tear,

And blights with plagues the marriage-hearse.

William Blake

QUESTIONS – answer in full sentences.

COMMONLY MISSPELLED WORDS – LEARN THEM!

These words are the most commonly misspelt words in British school English assessments.

Learning these can help secure that level 5 you need, or guarantee that you won’t let the level 6 you’re after slip

EXTENSION SECTION:

One of the best ways to revise in English is to practice! Use the following pages to do your own pieces of writing

and PEA practice. Here are some things you can do (you can repeat them as many times as you like).

1. Find a poem and write a series of PEA chains on the atmosphere or tone of the poem.

2. Find a descriptive extract from a novel or story and write PEA chains on how tension is created or how a

character or place is presented.

3. Find a postcard, painting, photograph or object and use this to inspire a piece of descriptive or narrative

writing.

4. Think of an important event that has happened. Write a tabloid newspaper article about it.

USE THE SUCCESS CRITERIA IN YOUR EXERCISE BOOK TO HELP YOU COMPLETE THESE ACTIVITIES.
