2DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE - E-NEWS

With a new year, we welcome new students, families and staff to our College community. At our assembly on the first day, my message to students was to make the most of the many opportunities available. DSC staff have very high expectations of our students. With that comes the hope that students will commit to their learning and the assurance that our staff will support students to accept challenges and grow in their learning.

WELCOME TO NEW STAFFAt our first day assembly we welcomed both new and returning staff members to our College team:

VCE EXCELLENCE AWARDS We celebrated the successes of 2017 on the evening of Wednesday 20th December, with the annual College Presentation Evening. It was a very positive way to end the year with so many members of the College community attending.

Among the many awards and scholarships presented on the night, nine of the College’s high achieving Year 12 VCE students were recognised. These students were: Brooke Dorling, Alexander Fenner, Darcie Hower, Blake Johns, Jemyma Lieshout, Shannon Mellings, Ruby Pratt, Dylan Pryor and Chloe Smith.

Jemyma Lieshout was awarded the College Dux for 2017 and was presented with the Baw Baw Shire Academic Excellence Scholarship. Jemyma will begin studying Fashion and Textile Merchandising at RMIT University in 2018.

It was very pleasing to see the positive destinations the class of 2017 have been offered. We wish all 2017 graduates well for their future studies and careers.

Jemyma Lieshout, College Dux for 2017

COMMUNITY EVENTSOur College life includes many community events. On Saturday 10th February, our College Captains, House Captains, students and staff will participate in the Ficifolia Parade.

As I write this newsletter, House Captains are preparing for the Annual Inter-house Swimming Sports to be held on Thursday 15th February. We are all looking forward to an enjoyable summer day at the Drouin pool and some great competition between the four Houses.

Monday 19th February is a very important day in our calendar as we will hold our Celebration Assembly to recognise the progress students made in 2017.

VCE Parent/Student Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 13th February. Valuable information will be shared and there will be an opportunity to have all those burning questions about VCE answered.

We are also looking forward to a welcome BBQ and Information Evening for the parents of Year 7 students on Wednesday 14th February. This evening is a great way for parents to meet other parents and your child’s teachers.

BUILDINGSOn Saturday 3rd February, we took delivery of a relocatable building which will provide us with two very much needed classrooms. This should be ready for us to use in three weeks.

On Tuesday of this week we held a start-up meeting with Law Architects, Mackie Pty Ltd (builders) and the Victorian Building Authority. At this meeting we were able to confirm work on our new buildings will begin within the next two weeks. The first work will be the demolition of the old canteen and uniform shop. Prior to this the builders will set up their compound and safety fencing. This fencing will be in place for most of this year and will require all of us to be cooperative when moving around the site.

STUDENT LEADERSHIPIt was pleasing to see a large number of senior students stepping up as candidates for the recent House Captain Elections. Thanks to all those students and I hope they will contribute as senior students in their House.

Congratulations to the 2018 House Captains:

LAWSON PATERSON GORDON DENNIS

Captain Lateisha Edwards Taylah Stephens Emily Robb Jessica Murphy

Captain Dan Brown Jake Smith Harry Phillips Drew McLean*

Vice Captain Rani Grenville Maddi Shaw Karly Jans Chloe Werner

Vice Captain Belah Reid Lochie Shaw Jonah Serong Scott Simpson-Brewer*

*Dennis Boys were a tie: Scott Simpson Brewer, Drew McLean

SERIOUSLY FOCUSED!

The 2018 House Captains are

focused on leading their

House to victory.

Kicking off with the 2018

Swimming Sports.

From the General Office...

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF) PLEASE NOTE THAT A NEW APPLICATION FORM IS REQUIRED EVERY YEARThe Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities.

CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. CSEF cannot be used for curriculum or elective charges.

The annual CSEF amount per student is:

• $125 for primary school students

• $225 for secondary school students.

How To ApplyContact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef

More InformationFor the CSEF application closing dates and more information about the fund visit www.education.vic.gov.au/csef

FEESA reminder that all fees for 2017 are now overdue (unless you have arranged a continuing payment plan). Curriculum charges for 2018 are due by the end of Term 1 2018. Elective charges for 2018 will be added to statements in Term 1.

Please note statements will be sent home in Week 6 to families via email or mailed if no email has been provided. If you are making payments via BPAY or direct deposit please double check that you are using the correct payment details for DSC. These details can be found on your statement.

If you want your payment to go against a specific charge (eg netbook, camp) please notify the general office as any notes you make do not transfer across to our system.

To set up a payment plan for fees, please contact the Business Manager, Josie O’Connor to make an appointment. Please note: only Year 7 and 12 camps can be added to payment plans.

STUDENTS LEAVING EARLYIf you need to collect your child/ren from school early, please provide them each with a signed note explaining the reason and time to leave class. The student is to take this note to the Learning Culture Centre and place it in the IN tray in the morning for verification by a Coordinator. Students may collect their note at recess or lunchtime so that he/she may leave class and take the note to the Learning Culture Centre to sign out.

If you unexpectedly need to collect your student, please phone the office so we can call the student up at recess or lunchtime and give them a pass to leave class.

Please note: if you have arranged for your student to be collected by someone other than the primary / alternate family (as listed on the student’s record), we will require parent permission before the student can sign out with that person. Please send a note stating the person’s name or ring the general office to give permission.

We appreciate your co-operation in this process as this will minimise disruption to classes, the inconvenience incurred by parents having to wait unnecessarily, and time spent looking for students by office staff.

Welcome Back to 2018

Country Bus TravelNotice to all Parents and StudentsCountry buses (this does not include in town bus services) are provided as a free service to eligible students for the sole purpose of providing transport between home and school. While transport to and from other locations may have been allowed in the past, this situation has become unmanageable and unsafe. The rules governing School Buses are clear in this regard.

Transport such as:• to the home of another student,• to after school employment,• to sporting and other social events, or• to another person’s home for the purpose of child

minding, are all regarded as private in nature and therefore the responsibility of the parents and students concerned.

Casual travel in the past has caused overcrowding on some buses which creates serious concerns with respect to safety. This year most buses are already running to their capacity so seating is not available.

As a result of these issues, and in accord with Department of Education and Training and Department of Infrastructure guidelines, no bus passes will be issued for any reason other than to facilitate short term emergency housing.

PLEASE NOTE: No bus pass will be issued for any other purpose. We deeply regret the inconvenience this may cause but we need to follow the guidelines set out by the Department of Education and Training as closely as possible, which are created in the best interests of safety for all students.

Maureen Hickman Transport Coordinator Drouin Secondary College

VCAL Students Share Their Experience with TAFE CoursesBuilding and ConstructionLast year, as part of my schooling, I completed my Certificate II in Building and Construction at the Baw Baw Skills Centre in Warragul, which is run by AGA (Apprenticeship Groups Australia). I attended the TAFE course for 6 months and learnt a lot about the construction industry and the regulations and rules that need to be followed. At AGA we learnt how to read house plans and what certain symbols on the plans stand for, how to use power tools appropriately, correct protective equipment to use and our big assessment was to make blueprints for a miniature house and then follow the plans to build our own two storey little house.

By Jake

Screen and MediaIn VCAL we do a course that is called VET. VET is a course that is done alongside your schooling, every Wednesday or in some cases on Friday, we do our TAFE course.

My TAFE course is Screen and Media, every Wednesday I go to Federation Training in Warragul from 9am until 2:45pm. We find our own way there, it is right next to the train station and we go there in casual clothes. In Screen and Media we do everything on computers, we have done Photoshop work, 3D modelling and animation, working in teams for research tasks. TAFE feels like real life and it gives us skills we cannot get at school. It is a great part of VCAL.

INTRODUCING...Miss StantonMy name is Maddy Ferguson and I recently had the pleasure of interviewing our new teacher Miss Stanton. After successfully passing VCAL in both Year 11 and 12 at Berwick Secondary College, Miss Stanton then went to Victoria University and studied to be a teacher and has since been a casual relief teacher (CRT) at many primary and secondary schools including Lynbrook, Lyndhurst, Nar Nar Goon Primary and Tooradin Primary School. Term 3 she was a CRT for Drouin Secondary College and Leongatha Secondary College. Miss Stanton is now a fulltime teacher at DSC and takes Year 8/9 VisCom, 8/9 3D Art, Year 10 Art, Year 11 LG and VCAL work related skills. Both VCAL classrooms have had a big revamp and thanks to Miss Stanton and Mrs Goss for putting all their time and effort into it. So welcome our new teacher Miss Stanton into our school and wish her all the best!

What's cooking...in the Food Technology kitchens?

Welcome to another school year from the DSC Food team!

We’re looking forward to sending home some great foods with the students this year, but this becomes difficult if they don’t have a container. Please make sure all Food Technology students have a clean, named container with lid for all practical classes to help us protect our precious environment by using less throwaway products. ARCC awards are on offer for everyone who remembers as we feel it’s really important!

Shrove Tuesday is coming up on Tuesday 13th February, so what better way to celebrate than pancakes for breakfast. Find us in the undercover area before school and share some breakfast to help you get a great start to your learning for the day.

As always, we’re happy to support students with allergies and intolerances. Please discuss these with us so we have alternatives available.

We look forward to another great year in the kitchens this year! Watch this space…

On the move...BUXWEAR UNIFORM SHOP AND CANTEENare now located at the front of The Lyn Kelly Stadium (The Gym)

The Buxwear Uniform Shop at DSC is now on the carpark side of the stadium. It is open on Thursdays 10am to 6pm & the first Saturday of each month 9.30am to 12.30pm. For more information on uniforms or to see the price list go to the Uniform page on our website www.drouinsc.vic.edu.au.

In preparation for the start of building works, the Canteen has relocated into the stadium kitchen (on the tennis court side). Students using the canteen enter via the old student entrance to the stadium. All students entering the stadium for sport please go through the front door closest to the carpark.

Library LowdownNeed a space to complete class work or homework? A4, the classroom in the library, is open at lunchtimes for study for students from ALL year levels. You are welcome to bring your lunch. It opens a few minutes after the bell for the start of lunch. What was that about lunch? Yes, you are welcome to bring your lunch.

The Main Library can be used before school for study too - routinely studying in the library is a great strategy to help keep up to date. Join us at 8.30am for quality studying.

Wait, there's more. As if that's not enough opportunity, come in after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until 4.30pm for another chance to study!

Be organised and be proud of what you can achieve when you put in the effort.

Year 7 Reading & LiteracyAll Year 7 students are participating in the Accelerated Reader Program with library staff or are involved in the literacy support program, “Cars & Stars”.

Accelerated Reader takes place during SURFF and English lessons in the library. With the aid of computerised quizzes, students are placed on a level appropriate to their reading ability.

Students need to be supported at home with a routine of regular reading. At this stage of the year, students should all have selected books at their level and be reading them regularly at home.

The target for Semester 1 is to read at least three books and successfully complete quizzes on each.

Thank you for supporting your child’s reading.

Year 8 Melbourne Camp2017

For some, Melbourne camp was a new experience and for others, it was a chance to re-explore the beautiful city. As we arrived at the hostel, everyone made themselves comfortable even though some had trouble with their key cards to unlock the doors. We travelled by bus, tram and walked to many exciting destinations that included rock climbing, the Queen Victoria Market, the MCG and the Eureka Skydeck just to name a few. The rock climbing helped some of us face our fears and others just enjoyed the wonderful view of Melbourne. Ice skating was very refreshing on the 40 degree day, but the walk to the aquarium was a killer.

The Old Melbourne Goal was absolutely terrifying especially for the groups who went at night time, the supernatural feeling was very real when walking into the haunted cells.

Everyone was looking forward to seeing Ferdinand at Crown cinemas and it was a hilarious movie to watch and it was nice to relax in a cool cinema. The view from the Melbourne Star was breathtaking and everyone enjoyed the time to chillax from the extreme days we had been having. The animals at the zoo were very interesting and educational to learn their ways of life. Most people felt a thrill of excitement as they went down the water slide or jumped off the 3 metre high diving board at MSAC, others were scared out of their skin at the horrifying thought of jumping. By the end of the week everyone was extremely rundown and ready to go home after a fun filled week.

Year 9 CampThe end of the year saw Year 9 students set off on 3 choices of outdoor camp run by Outdoor Education Group (OEG). Students could choose 5 days at The Grampians bushwalking and rock climbing, Lake Eildon bushwalking and sea kayaking or the Murray River bushwalking and canoeing. All groups left early on the Monday morning excited with anticipation. Over the week groups of 14 students and 2 staff came together, learning new skills, playing games, supporting each other through difficult challenges and living 24 / 5 in each other’s company. The week saw incredible resilience from all groups in the 40 to 45 degree heat. The team at The Grampians showed incredible determination walking in very high temperatures.

Overall, the feedback from all groups was positive and especially those who could relax in the waters of the Murray River through the hot afternoons. The camp program focused on the College values of Achievement, Respect, Commitment and Community. A fantastic opportunity with wonderful outcomes were achieved by all; this was a true chance to explore personal obstacles and find strategies for success and friendship. A special thank you to all OEG and DSC staff who accompanied the students for the week, sharing the highs and challenges side by side. Mr Hasley at the Grampians, Mrs Forbes and Mr Axford at Lake Eildon and Mr Russell and Mr King at the Murray. I certainly loved the good company and beautiful surrounds of the Murray River region too.

Year 8 Lake Eildon CampAmelia’s Experience:

At first glance the Eildon camp seems quite terrible, and yes we thought so too. The Lake Eildon camp is actually enjoyable and is definitely a learning experience. The activities include hiking, canoeing and camping in tents, or in our case, a tarp under the stars. It’s not just for people who like the outdoors and exercise, it’s for anyone willing to have a good time. The five day camp teaches leadership, cooking, outdoor education, and teamwork. The skills we learnt are all things that will benefit our future. While it was hard, once the whole experience was over, we all felt so accomplished and we had bonded as a team. The groups were made up of students with differing strengths and weaknesses, we were all determined enough to push ourselves and complete camp activities to the best of our ability. Even though we had no choice but to push through because we were stuck in the bush surrounded by a lake, the outdoor camp was great!

Beth’s experience:

This camp was certainly different from the Melbourne camp, for starters we only had limited time with a proper toilet and had to sleep outside. But all the scary stuff aside this camp was a time to try new things and make new friends. Unfortunately, our group only had 4 girls and we were stuck with stinking boys, lucky the beautiful views made up for this. Each group had their own experiences and inside jokes, we all have new memories and even I, someone who personally hates the outdoors, wouldn’t be against going again. I started the week thinking “OMG this is going to be AWFUL” and ended saying “this isn’t so bad and I’m enjoying this”. Even the bus rides were fun. Once you get past the smell of five day old BO, the stories and laughs we shared were one of the best parts and I even think the teachers didn’t mind spending five days straight with us.

I hope that more girls decide to go on this trip than in 2017. We each had time to cook and try our hand at different jobs around the campsite. Some group members even chose to sleep on a tarp under the stars along the shoreline, which meant that I got my group’s tent to myself.

Do you need to update your student’s medical information?Thank you to those parents who have informed the school of changes to their child’s medical condition, health plans and medication requirements. It is very important that this information is kept up-to-date in case your

student requires medical treatment while they are at school.

If your child’s medical condition has changed and you have not yet updated your child’s records, please contact your child’s Learning Culture Centre (LCC).

If your child requires medication at school, please hand the medication in to the LCC with a signed note from a parent/guardian. Medication needs to be in its original packaging, including any prescription label, clearly marked with the student’s name, the dosage and time to be taken.

Thank you in advance for your feedback as we continue to work in partnership to provide the best care for the students together.

Living Well with Asthma: Advice for Parents and Carers

1 in 10 people in Australia have asthma. Children and adolescents with current asthma are more likely to miss days of school due

to asthma and a key aspect of improving quality of life is ensuring that your child is able to engage fully in the physical activity and social aspects of life and learning.

Good asthma control is:

• Symptom free during the day and during physical exercise, reducing the need for reliever medication,

• Symptom free at night, allowing for a good night’s rest,

• Rarely experiencing asthma attacks or exacerbations,

• Preventer medication and devices are being used correctly and as prescribed (eg. on a daily basis),

• Having an asthma action plan to follow, both for the school and at home, and promptly acting on the plan when asthma symptoms occur.

Asthma symptoms are not a normal aspect of life and should be taken seriously. Children and teenagers with poor asthma control should be encouraged to seek assistance, and should visit their GP or respiratory physician for an asthma review as soon as possible.

Thank You

WHY IS BREAKFAST SO IMPORTANT?

A good, nutritious breakfast helps you get fuelled up and ready for the day. At school, a hungry child can lose concentration in class, have no energy and may be more likely to snack on unhealthy foods such as chips or biscuits if they do not get a good breakfast.  Try some easy breakfast ideas:

Wholemeal toast, cereals and eggs all provide the power (energy) kid’s bodies need to get through the morning.

Milk and other dairy products are especially good for growing bodies and healthy bones.

Use a blender to mix fruit and milk into a smoothie full of goodness.

Cut up fresh fruit and give it to the kids with yoghurt and a piece of toast.
