YEAR 9:CERAMIC RESEARCH
PROJECT
CERAMIC/ 3D RESEARCH
FOR EXAMPLE:
YOUR 2D ARTIST
SELECTION. FOR EXAMPLE:
YOUR 3D
ARTIST
RESEARCH.
LEARNING PURPOSE
LO1: I will gain knowledge of contemporary Ceramic artists works and how it can develop
my coursework theme.
LO2: I will consider my artistic strengths when selecting a Ceramic artist to reproduce in
upcoming lessons.
LO3: I will conduct relevant online research to construct in depth artist analysis using the
guidance sheet.
Future Learning
• Development of thematic ideas.
• Collecting relevant imagery for your
theme.
• Improving your observational skill
towards AO3.
• Expanding media knowledge.
Specialist Vocabulary: Artist, Reproduction, Line, Continuous, Scale, Proportion, Upscaling, Observation, Tone, Highlights, Shadows, Texture, Mark-Making, Media, Refinement
ARTIST REFERENCE RESEARCHTODAYS TASK ONE:
You are to now select 1 3D/ Ceramic Artist from the research
you undertook last week and complete written analysis for 1 of
that Artists works.
It is critical that you are able to find basic information online,(for example, the artists name) as you will now begin to construct
detailed Artist Analysis for 1 of your artist’s works.
You need to access the Artist Analysis from the online curriculum
– see the next slide for detailed instructions on where to find the
guidance sheet.
ONCE YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS TASK MOVE ONTO TASK 2!
WHICH ENSURES YOU PRESENT YOUR WORK IN POWERPOINT- USE THE
TEACHERS EXAMPLE AS A GUIDE.
NEW TASK!
ARTIST REFERENCE RESEARCH
CERAMIC ARTIST REFERENCEGRADE 6 GRADE 8 GRADE 9
REMEMBER AS YOU ARE VIEWING ARTIST WORK ASK YOURSELF; WHAT GRADE WOULD I GIVE THAT ARTWORK
FOR GCSE?
ABOVE ARE EXAMPLE OF OTHER STUDENTS ‘ARTIST REPRODUCTION’ OF 3D SCULPTURES.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT ARTWORKS NEED TO HAVE CLEAR LINKS TO YOUR THEME AND YOU WILL
NEED TO BE ABLE TO DRAW AT LEAST 1 OF THESE SCULPTURE ON YOUR RETURN TO SCHOOL.
ARTIST REFERENCE RESEARCHTASK TWO (TODAY TASK):
You should now produce a minimum of a 2 page PowerPoint
presentation showcasing your chosen CERAMIC artist. You need to
include an Artist Name, Imagery and your Critical Annotation. You
should select 2 fonts which you intend to use for your all your
coursework boards. (1 for titles/ 1 for text)
You need to set up your PowerPoint correctly so this can be easily
printed on your return to school.
On the top bar select ‘DESIGN’ and then select ‘SLIDE SIZE’ and finally
select ‘STANDARD’.
USE THE NEXT TWO SLIDES AS EXAMPLARS! PLEASE ENSURE YOU INCLUDE IMAGERY WHICH IS NOT SKETCHED OR BLURRED.

Abby Diamond is an American illustrator and visual
artist, producing abstract artworks predominantly
featuring wildlife and nature. The artwork I have chosen
to reproduce is the ‘Neon Northern Pygmy Owl’ as I
think Diamond’s colourful characterisation of a
somewhat plain bird is playful and unconventional.
The artwork is composed of a focal central bird, the
Northern Pygmy Owl. Although the bird is central, the
owl’s side on positioning and eye line creates an
uneven right balance to the composition. I would
descried the appearance of the Northern Pygmy to be
abstracted and stylised by the use of haphazard
brushstrokes, linear marks and exotic colours. Diamond
has chosen to keep the background minimal, a stark
white surround to intentionally draw the attention
centrally to the owl. However, there are bold colourful
brushstrokes extending and bursting from behind the
bird. I think the extension of colour frames the owl
successfully and this is an element I will consider as I
develop my artworks.
Diamond has a recognisable wet media experimental aesthetic
for capturing wildlife. She is known to use a range of medias;
pens, inks, watercolours paints and dyes. She overlays painterly
marks with refined lines and marks using contrasting black finer
or harmonious coloured fine liners. I have found when
replicating Diamond’s style, it is a challenge to create
haphazard painterly marks whilst remaining in control of the
application of paint media.
I have selected Abby Diamond’s as an influence for my
project, as her artwork displays harmonious colour combination
which contradict the reality of the bird’s natural tones. The
‘Neon Northern Pygmy Owl’ artwork is of particular interest, as
the subject matter relates to my theme ‘Woodland Creatures’.
Diamond’s work has similarities to the artwork of Claudine
O’Sullivan, both artists abstract the natural colouring of the
animals. However, O’Sullivan works primarily in colouring pencil.
As I continue to develop my portfolio, I would like to merge the
style of both these artists. I intend to do this by expanding my
use of media and editing my own photographs by
experimenting with colour. Once I have completed a series of
photo edits, I can work from these using a combination of
media; dyes, watercolour, coloured fine-liners, colouring pencils
and black biro. Furthermore, I will extend my artist research to
gain further reference to inspire the backgrounds of my designs.
SUMMARYSubmission of Todays Task- You will need to send your PowerPoint or alternative
document to your Art Teacher by the end of the School day. The expectations
are outlined below:
2 PAGE POWERPOINT SLIDE
• Title Page (PAGE 1) – Your ARTISTS Name (in chosen font) and 3 IMAGES which
showcase your 3D chosen artists. Ensure your imagery is not sketched or blurred as
these will be printed on your return to school.
• Artist Analysis (PAGE 2) – Use the guidance sheet on the online curriculum.
For more help or support please contact your Art teacher via their school email.
