Year 7 Spanish HOMEWORK TOOLKIT
Nombre: Clase:
Welcome to the Year 7 Spanish
Homework Toolkit We hope you will find this Homework Toolkit useful. It contains all of the Spanish
vocabulary that your child will need this year, and we have included an overview
of which topics your child should revise during each half-term. The same
vocabulary can be found in the languages Toolkit that your child has in their
notebooks and also in Klic.
Memorising vocabulary is fundamental to success as a language
learner.
After all, words are the building blocks to a language and learning small amounts
on a regular, even daily, basis will help ensure that your child builds up a solid
foundation of words in their new language. If your child memorises a wide variety
of vocabulary, they will make much better progress in all four skills of
listening, reading, writing and speaking. We have developed a cross-curricular
programme with Humanities for students to learn and practise new vocabulary. Every
week, students will learn new vocabulary by using the 7 vocabulary learning
strategies they learn in their Languages and Humanities lessons. Progress will be
monitored through weekly vocabulary test. Videos and more information can be found
in Klic, under the subject’s section.
Little and often is the best way to memorise new words in a foreign
language.
We recommend that your child sets aside a regular time to learn vocabulary using
the strategies they find more useful. It is a good idea to explore a range of
different strategies with your child, to help them find the memorizing technique
that works best for them. Please find attached some more language learning
strategies apart from the 7 main ones.
We hope you find this booklet useful.

Estrategias para aprender vocabulario / vocabulary learning strategies
1 Look, say, cover, write, check. Use this strategy to help memorise vocabulary.
2 Post-‐it notes. Write new words on Post-‐it notes and stick them around your
bedroom, so that you keep seeing Spanish words at different times.
3 Word cards. Put new words on cards with the Spanish on one side and the
English on the other, to help you test and re-‐test yourself when learning.
4 Vocabulary ranking. When you are learning a new vocabulary group, try writing
out the words in a ranking order of difficulty – start with the difficult ones and
spend more time learning those.
5 Test yourself. Put new words on Post-‐it notes around your bedroom or write
them on cards Spanish on one side, English on the other), to help you test and
re-‐test yourself on meanings.
6 Colour coding. Write masculine words in blue and feminine words in red to help
you remember gender and the correct article.
7 Language links. Make links in your mind when meeting new words. Are they
similar to English? Is there a simple trick to remember the word? serpiente is similar to the English ‘serpent’; puerta looks like ‘porter’ – so imagine a porter
guarding a door.
8 Language patterns. Look for patterns in the Spanish words and use these to
your advantage. Once you know the spelling of vajilla, you do not need to re-‐learn it in the second half of the word lavavajillas.
9 Vocabulary fan Create a fan with paper. Write the English word in one of the
folds. Then write the Spanish word in the fold next to it. When you finish, hide
the first column. Now you only have the Spanish. Write the English in the
following fold. Continue hiding and adding until you use all the folds.
10 Record yourself Record the words you are learning to recognise them when you
hear them. You can play the clip and listen to it on the bus, on your way to
school, etc.
11 Calligrams A calligram is a poem, phrase, or word in which the typeface,
calligraphy or handwriting is arranged in a way that creates a visual image. The
image created by the words expresses visually what the word, or words, say.
12 Teach someone else Teach the vocabulary you have to learn to someone else
using different methods.
