RTU RECTOR’S ADDRESS

DEAR RIGA TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY RIGA BUSINESS SCHOOL ALUMNI,

Riga Business School (RBS) is a leading regional business education institution and the only school in the Baltics offering North-American style MBA. The School has a strong reputation and is proud of graduates who occupy leading managerial positions in Latvia and abroad. As RBS is an important part of Riga Technical University (RTU), the value of RBS alumni is evaluated highly. RTU RBS was the first higher education institution in the Baltics to offer MBA programs in English, granting its graduates an internationally recognized Master of Business Administration degree. Today, 26 years later, that the School is full mature and has clear qualities, that you have embraced through the time in this school. RBS has an environment that challenges and inspires; the knowledge and skills received at RBS will ensure that you can analyze and understand processes through your future career. The School prepares business leaders, so I would like to wish each graduate to leave the studies at RBS with a strong leader’s confidence in order to justify the contribution the RBS team invested in you!

Sincerely,

RBS DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS

DEAR GRADUATES, FACULTY, STAFF, FRIENDS, AND SUPPORTERS,

Global development of digital technologies is facilitating creation of products and services that a decade ago were thought to belong in science fiction. These products have changed nearly every aspect of our lives, the ways we do our work and the approaches we use to manage our organizations. Nevertheless, technology is only a tool, and its proper, efficient and effective use depends on the inspiration, judgement, ethics, and leadership of a human. In recent years RBS has put more emphasis on training leadership skills and introduced a start-up component in all programs. We have further benchmarked course content against global professional standards and requirements, as well as increased the focus on technologies and their use. Our students and alumni help each other through mentorship programs and together they assist people in need through various social initiatives. These and other components, introduced by program leadership and faculty as part of the instructional process, are designed to prepare our students to become better managers and to undertake leadership challenges in the increasingly globalized and fast-paced world. Dear graduates! Use your skills, inspiration and judgement to advance your objectives, at the same time advancing your organizations, countries and society. Let your passion encourage other people around you to move forward. I believe that together you will achieve unprecedented heights!

With the best wishes for your success,sincerely yours,

Dr. JĀNIS GRĒVIŅŠ,

Director, RTU Riga Business School

ABOUT RIGA BUSINESS SCHOOL

For 26 years, RTU Riga Business School (RBS) has been the place where leaders of today and tomorrow meet. RBS was established in 1991 in cooperation with the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA, and the University of Ottawa, Canada. RBS was the first higher education institution in the Baltics to offer MBA programs in English, granting its graduates an internationally recognized Master of Business Administration degree. Having gained 20 years’ experience and hundreds of MBA graduates, in the year 2012, in collaboration with BI Norwegian Business School and the University at Buffalo, USA, RBS opened a dual-degree Bachelor of Management in International Business program.RBS is the only school in the Baltics which offers North-American style MBA and BBA programs that contain the high-level teaching standards and structure, a liberal

art approach, intensive case studies, group work, and active classroom participation. Strong commitment to high quality, the principles of North American management programs and all the courses presented in English make RBS distinctive in Latvia and beyond. Not only does the School have a solid reputation but also more than 1200 graduates, the majority of whom occupy leading managerial positions both in Latvia and abroad.Riga Business School is a member of PRME (Prin ciples for Responsible Management Education). The PRME are a call to encourage and facilitate the movement of business schools toward the approaches that meet the new needs and expectations of the business world and the demands of a new generation of students with regard to sustainability and good corporate citizenship.

RBS PROGRAMS

EXECUTIVE MBA

The RBS Executive MBA Program is designed to advance experienced executives to new leadership heights; moreover, it adds new perspectives and tools to their existing vast management knowledge and embraces all aspects of contemporary management practice. The North-American style management education complemented by the best European experience provides students with a truly global executive learning and networking opportunity.

“It was an intense personal and professional development journey for over 2 years! I believe that the main advantage of the EMBA program is outstanding classmates  – successful senior level professionals from various industries. The program design and the RBS faculty ensure the experience exchange and the better understanding of provided theoretical background. I  would also outline that the studies are based on the most updated international business literature and focus on case studies. The RBS EMBA program differs from others thanks to its unique leadership curriculum, which helps each student grow their leadership skills. The important part of my studies was the study trip to Buffalo in the USA, where we visited the global manufacturers to learn their business and processes, took a couple of business classes at the University at Buffalo, met with the local startups at the business incubator, and had other useful visits.”

KASPARS LUKAČOVSExecutive MBA Alumnus

Executive MBA studies include:

Leadership Development Practicum  – a focused leadership skill development program delivered by recognized experts;

Distinguished international faculty from the USA, Canada, Argentina, South Africa, Europe, and more;

Two study trips to our excellent partner schools and organizations – a European and an out-of-Europe study trip. Each trip is planned as a learning module on a specific theme, such as negotiations, innovations, inner workings of the European Union or global business. RBS has organized the trips to the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), BI Norwegian Business School (Norway), the State University of New York at Buffalo (USA), and University of Stellenbosch Business School (South Africa). This year our students visited the capital of Europe – Brussels and gain the in-the-Middle-East experience at the Westford School of Management (United Arab Emirates). The next international trip is planned to Asia;

Networking opportunities with local and global executives. Carefully selected students receive valuable experience and insights to share with their peers, making the study process and discussion exciting and educational. Meeting experienced leaders from different industries is an advantage which is offered by the RBS Executive MBA Program.

RBS PROGRAMS

PROFESSIONAL MBA

The first and most prestigious evening MBA Program in Latvia that is delivered fully in English. The program is designed for professionals desiring to refine their skills and move up the career ladder. Professional MBA at RBS is especially valuable to those whose previous education background is not business (e.g. engineers, lawyers, IT specialists, medical personnel, etc.) and are willing to improve their career prospects or start their own businesses.

Students can receive a General MBA or select one of the following three Specialized MBAs:

MBA Finance MBA IT MBA Marketing

The RBS Professional MBA format is known for the extensive use of case studies from Harvard Business School, IESE, and the Case Centre. The program enables students to learn from the knowledge and experience of the faculty members and from each other by means of group work and classroom discussions. Exchanging ideas, opinions and experience, and analyzing real business situations, students develop their critical thinking and decision-making skills.

“Since its foundation, the focus of RBS has been on building overall professional development of managers and leaders of the Baltic region rather than on providing them with standard management education. With our MBA programs, we do not want to promise you professional and personal success, but we do promise a challenge – a challenge to step out of your comfort zone and to think critically. Delivering the message of social responsibility through our MBA programs is more important for us than to emphasize the mindset of individual victory. Join the RBS community!”

RBS PROGRAMS

BACHELOR PROGRAM WITH DUAL DEGREE OPTIONS

The BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) program at RTU Riga Business School is based on the curricula of the BBA programs of the two leading business schools in Europe and the USA – BI Norwegian Business School and the University at Buffalo.The curriculum focuses on fundamental business related subjects in management, such as Finance, Economics, Methods, Law, and Intercultural Communication, and uses a liberal arts approach to expanding students’ horizons. The BBA program is proud to have other different valu-able courses, such as StartUp Lab, Sales Management, Writing for Intercultural Communication, Art General, Intellectual Property, Financial Decision Making, and others. The program enables students to grow by stimulating creativity, developing problem-solving abilities, and expanding customer focus capabilities;

moreover, it also boosts the students’ abilities to make sound decisions and take ownership of the decisions they make and execute.This program gives a solid degree in international business with a distinct global access and the profound knowledge of how to establish a socially responsible business. The program is taught entirely in English.

The program offers three options:

Study three years at RBS in Riga and receive an internationally accredited and solid degree from RBS;

Study two years at RBS in Riga and the third year at BI Norwegian Business School and receive a dual degree diploma from RBS and BI;

Study three years at RBS in Riga and the fourth year at the University at Buffalo (UB) and receive a dual degree diploma from RBS and UB.

“Leading the BBA program during its first five years has been a very meaningful experience. First, I got to know a lot of great young people who will be at the helm of the business community for many decades to come. Second, we don’t stop trying to innovate as we always want to be the trendsetter in the region.”

EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR

RECOGNITION BY THE EMPLOYERS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF THE QUALITY OF THE EDUCATION PROVIDED BY RTU RIGA BUSINESS SCHOOL. WE WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION TO THE COMPANIES PROVIDING INTERNSHIPS

AND EMPLOYING MOST OF OUR GRADUATES

It is a true honor to be recognized by the RTU Riga Business School as Latvia’s Employer of the Year. Perhaps, what first comes to mind, associated with receiving this prestigious award, are good workplaces and generous employee benefits. At Groglass®, these are our baseline. To be a truly desirable company to work for, our aim is to make every workplace a challenge, where each individual is reaching for the top of their abilities. 8 Years after starting to sell our products to the European picture framing market against 5 competitors, Groglass® today is the absolute market leader. To become and remain #1, our employees are solving “super problems” every day, and this is what makes a good employer. We employ a cross-section of the Latvian society – kids who liked to play video games are now programming our robots and constantly improving our unique equipment; graduates of the Solid State Physics Institute are pondering the unpredictable physical properties of materials too small for a mind to comprehend – smaller than a wavelength of light; business school graduates who love to travel are growing our sales in more than 45 countries. And all have goals to bring the best out in them. We grow our business by making our employees grow. Well-educated and motivated employees are at the core of our success and many of them come out of the classrooms of the Riga Business School. So, if you like solving “super problems”, please join us and lead Groglass® into another head-spinning growth cycle.

ALEXANDER SASHA KELBERGFounder and Chairman of the Board at Groglass®

This year Rimi celebrates its 20th anniversary together with its employees, clients, suppliers and partners. We at Rimi aim to build long-term relationships with our employees, by promoting their professional growth and creating a positive working environment and ex-perience. We see that our competitive advantage is an environment where managers can be satisfied with the growth of employees and every employee enjoys work-ing together with a great manager.Rimi has prioritized attraction of talents to the compa-ny as a strategic investment for the future; therefore in 2016 graduates of universities were invited to apply for international management trainee program Rimi Talent Lab. Within this program, talented recent graduates of universities with the potential to become future Rimi leaders, had the opportunity to understand how they can apply the academic knowledge to a real business environment, find out more about different positions and career paths within Rimi and get valuable advices from field professionals. During 7 months participants of the Talent Lab program obtained additional knowledge about retail industry, applied it in the practice, as well as developed managerial and organisational skills. After the graduation from the program, all eight participants from three Baltic States continued to work in Rimi in ar-eas of category management, IT, retail intelligence, qual-ity assurance and marketing.

RTU Riga Business School was founded in 1991, and last year we celebrated our 25th anniversary with three events.

RBS always try to highlight leadership and management skills of many people in companies, NGOs and the government, therefore RBS devoted its anniversary celebration events to acknowledging 25 years of management in Latvia.

RBS Founders DinnerThe RBS Founders Dinner gathered more than 30 people who have helped to build and shape RBS to be the University you can see now. Among the guests were all three Directors, RBS Founders and our biggest supporters and many more.

Management Inspiration Stories“Management Inspiration Stories” introduces managers and leaders to the public and recognizes managers who have managed significant development in different areas (economy, culture, sports, society, etc.) in Latvia during the last 25 years.

RBS 25th Anniversary CelebrationThe RBS 25th Anniversary celebration was a closed reunion event for the RBS Community with the aim to celebrate the success of the last 25 years with alumni, students, faculty, staff and people connected closely to RBS.

RBS 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

35

On October 21, 2017, RBS launched an initiative in coope ration with the Latvia Centenary Bureau which will end in October 2018. Over the next three years, we will focus on bringing a positive connotation to the word “Management” and educating society by creating modern and accessible content about the Managers of Latvia.“Management Inspiration Stories” introduces manag-ement to the public and recognizes managers who have managed significant development in different areas (economy, culture, sports, society, etc.) in Latvia during the last 100 years. While often unknown to the public, their experience, philosophy and values are essential to inspiring and encouraging others to set and achieve ambitious goals. In the first year of the project, we invited managers who have lead significant development during the last 25 years.

LIFE @RBS

OPEN DAYS

RBS Open Days invite students to become part of the success, the knowledge, and the good feelings, which come from belonging to the RBS community. During the past year, we have held eight RBS Open Days events for our Bachelor and MBA programs. The RBS alumni and the representatives of successful companies provide valuable insight into both the learning environment and the value of the RBS diploma in the labor market. The sample case study discussions, facilitated by the RBS faculty, help our future students to comprehend how we learn together. During our Follow-a-Student-Day, potential BBA stu-dents can spend a whole day at RBS and experience the everyday life of an RBS student by participating in lectures, meeting with the Student Union, and commu-nicating with our faculty and administration.

ORIENTATION FOR NEW STUDENTS

The RBS Student Orientation Program has been developed to welcome new BBA and MBA students and introduce them to the RBS community. The program enables the students to become acquainted with one another, develop the sense of belonging, and feel at home at RBS. The event combines fun activities with thoughtful information and provides our new students with the opportunity to begin developing their own RBS network of colleagues, faculty and alumni.

BBA freshmen become acquainted with RBS during the three-day camp that is organized in cooperation with the local municipalities in Latvia. As an element of surprise, the location of a camp stays undisclosed until the moment of departure. The orientation program for MBA students is adjusted to meet the needs of young professionals; therefore, it is held on campus.

STUDENT UNION

The RBS Student Union (SU) stands for the interests of all RBS students. The RBS SU builds a strong community of leaders with the vision to leave a positive impact on society, boost its prosperity and create an influential and intelligent network between the students, the university, and its alumni.The members of the Student Union are led by the Presidential Couple and the Board – the main operational structure of the SU. The students work voluntarily in four divisions: Education, Culture, External Relations and PR. The community is the Union's most valuable asset; therefore, every opinion matters. The RBS SU creates an encouraging in and out-of-classroom environment for successful future entrepreneurs and leaders in the world of business.

GUEST LECTURES

The RBS mission is to support our students and provide them with valuable knowledge and experience, as they become leaders and team players and thus preparing them for life and success in the business world – whether in corporate, small business or entrepreneurial sectors. RBS invites business leaders from a range of industries and top institutions to share their knowledge with our community. This year we invited guest lecturers from companies, such as the Baltic Institute of Corporate

Governance, Circle K Latvia, TNS Latvia, Baltikums Banka, Citadele Banka, NASDAQ OMX Riga, CSR Latvia, Mortage Capital, 4finance, and many others. Our guest lecturers with their profound knowledge, experience and skills enrich the students with current thinking in various industries, the latest tendencies in a functional area approach and cutting edge innovation processes.

ANNUAL EXECUTIVE MBA GLOBAL STUDY TRIP

International study trips offer exceptional exposure to economic activity, market trends, and culture and combine academic learning with field visits to various companies from different sectors, such as finance, manufacturing, retail, banking, and others. In addition, the participants interact with business leaders, local Executive MBA program participants, and government officials in order to maximize group dynamics and networking opportunities.This year our students visited the capital of Europe – Brussels and gain the in-the-Middle-East experience at the Westford School of Management (United Arab Emirates). The next international trip is planned to Asia.

39

For the past 5 years, RBS have been actively involved in the education of Latvian Youth by supporting and organizing events with Junior Achievement Latvia (JAL). These events include, TITAN – Business Simulation Game, Webinars for SMUs and School Fairs, and traveling to local schools to educate young people about business plans and how to create ideas. We here at RBS strongly believe in educating youth, so we extend our education to high school students with events like L-EARN and RBS24.

L-EARN – Business Boot Camp

Designed specifically for high school students, the RBS and SEB Bank L-EARN camp provides a sneak peek into the business world, decision-making and idea generation. During the camp, participants become a part of a “management team”. Their main task is to propose a solution for a real business problem from SEB Bank. To complete the task, participants attend lectures on different business areas, meet with representatives of SEB Bank and visit other RBS Alumni companies to get a sense of what business means in real life. The students also compete for a full scholarship for studies in the Riga Business School BBA program.

Startup Workshop RBS 24

RBS in collaboration with JAL every year hosts the best Student Companies in Latvia to help them create the most effective Elevator Pitches. During this event, they learn the do’s and don’ts of an effective elevator pitch from RBS Faculty, and use these new skills in presentations for potential investors, partners and customers. Afterwards they also get feedback from real investors and executives about their pitches and useful advice for further development.

RBS ACTIVITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

40

The Embassy of the United States in Latvia and the American Councils for International Education are pleased to invite students to participate in the FLEX program. This exchange program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for bright and talented Latvian high school students to live with an American host family and attend an American high school for one academic year. We are happy that FLEX program is also introduced in Latvia.The FLEX program was established by the United States Congress in 1992. It provides a year-long, fully funded exchange program for secondary school students to travel to the United States for a year and study at a U.S. high school. Now in its twenty-third year, the FLEX academic year program has provided scholarships to over 24,000 secondary school students. The goal of the program is to promote mutual understanding between citizens of the United States and other peoples and

countries, as students learn more about the U.S. and teach Americans about their countries. Each scholarship recipient will live in the United States for one year as a member of a U.S. host family and study in an American high school.Secondary school students with disabilities are also invited to participate in the competition. Approximately twenty students with disabilities are invited to the U.S. on the FLEX program each year.

EDUCATION USA

Since the process of application to university in the United States can be very often overwhelming and confusing the Education USA Information and Testing Center (EITC) as an integral part of RBS in cooperation with the US Embassy in Latvia is here for all who are considering studies in the USA. We are the only official source in Latvia which provides unbiased and comprehensive information about higher education opportunities in the USA. The center offers free of charge monthly group advising sessions and individual consultations, test preparation materials, testing center. As every year EITC was also successfully represented at the largest education fair in Latvia, Skola 2017.

“Education USA, whether in English, Latvian or any other language, are very likely to be the first keywords one is about to search for in Google once he decides to explore the possibilities of pursuing an academic path in U.S. And unlike in majority of cases, the first result does, in fact, deliver all the information one is looking for. Education USA does a fantastic job at promoting the diversity of U.S. higher education and it helped me all throughout the process of applying to one of the best law schools in U.S. Education USA is, without a doubt, the onestop source for everything on studies in U.S.!”
