PresIDent’s letter

The energy on campus right now is positively exhil-arating. The 2012 Fall CE event—our second and largest ever—was even bigger and better than we’d imagined. Life University is still riding high on the wave of 1,500 DCs, plus alums, professors, pre-senters, chiropractic leaders and their families, who converged on campus for five incredible days of learning, connection and inspiration. For me and for many of the guests I spoke with over the long weekend, this was a true Homecoming.

I’m equally honored and humbled by the glow-ing reviews of our programming, our lecturers, our beautiful campus and the great work that is tak-ing place here every day. To the hundreds of Life University faculty, staff and even students who volunteered their time and talents—in addition to their regular responsibilities and workloads—to make this event a resounding success, I give my heartfelt thanks. It’s people like them, doing things like our Fall CE event, out of a philosophy rooted in Lasting Purpose and Vitalism, that make it possible for Life University to thrive as a thought leader in the Vital Health Revolution. If you missed it, make sure you plan to attend next year (Oct. 2-6, 2013). Turn to our coverage on pages 4-5 to get an idea of what the Fall CE experience is all about, and what you have to look forward to in 2013.

The theme for this year’s Fall CE was the 70s, in honor of our first graduating class and their 35th class reunion, which we celebrated—along with several other key reunion years—in style. In further tribute, Your Extraordinary LIFE interviewed members of the original class of 1977 to see how far they’ve come, and what they’ve taken away from their time at LIFE. Their profiles appear on pages 6-7.

Finally, I’d like to draw your attention to the very center of this issue. Traditionally, the fall issue of Your Extraordinary LIFE contains our annual President’s Report. It’s my opportunity to share with you a snapshot of Life University as today’s leader in vital health education, and all we achieved in 2011-2012. Please take some time to consider our progress, to take note of the year’s most notable highlights (there are many!) and to read the names of the alumni and friends who are making it all possible. The report begins on page 9. If you have any questions about the report, or would like to add your name to that list of LIFE’s valued supporters, please contact us.

Thank you for keeping up with Life University, and for being one of the many who make LIFE worth coming home to.

Yours in Chiropractic,

Guy F. Riekeman, D.C.President

What’s New atDr. Carrick and LIFE’s Functional Neurology Center featured on ABC’s “Nightline”

Juju Chang, Emmy-winning reporter, and the crew of aBC’s “nightline” recently visited Life University for an interview with Distinguished professor Dr. ted Carrick, head of LIFE’s Functional neurology Center. “nightline” aired the story, entitled “Chiropractic neurology: miracle method or placebo?” on aug. 8. the coverage featured the first-ever footage shown on an american television network of Dr. Carrick delivering chiropractic neurological care to actual patients at the marietta, Ga., clinic. two patients suffering from severe neurological conditions were highlighted, and were shown making significant progress throughout the segment after undergoing “brain-retraining” methods Dr. Carrick and the Carrick Institute have been refining for the past 30 years.

When asked if he feels that the care he offers constitutes “a miracle cure,” Carrick responded, “I think miracles are things that happen once in a while. What we find is that the miracles that we see, we’re seeing them frequently, every day, so they’re not really miracles. What we do is amazing because of what humankind can do.”

Dr. Deborah Pogrelis named Board of Trustees Chairpersonat the quarterly board meeting in July, Deborah pogrelis, D.C., was elected as Chairperson of the Board of trustees for Life University. Dr. pogrelis has served in various roles on the Board of trustees since 2009. pogrelis takes over from shawn Ferguson, D.C., who has served as chairperson since 2010.

On taking over as chairperson, pogrelis says, “I look forward to leading the Board of trustees as we continue to work with the administration to fulfill the mission and goals of Life University. In addition to housing the largest chiropractic college in the world, the quality and growth of our undergraduate and master’s programs has catapulted Life University into being a premier institution of natural heath science education. as such, we have responsibility to produce graduates who are skilled practitioners and transformational leaders in an

increasingly diverse, global and dynamic world.”

Life University president Dr. Guy riekeman says, “there is an incredible amount of enthusiasm among the Board of trustees by the appointment of Deb pogrelis. shawn Ferguson has shown exemplary leadership over the past two years as the University completed two phases of our 2020 Vision. Given pogrelis’ history with LIFE, she is the perfect person to lead us into phase III and beyond.”

Dr. pogrelis has a long-tenured relationship with Life University, having been a student in the very first class in January 1975. she previously served the University as the Chief of staff of Clinics and Dean of the College of Chiropractic.

Dr. pogrelis practices at towne Lake Family Chiropractic in Woodstock, Ga., and has been a resident of Cherokee County for 34 years.

Women’s cross country off to an impressive startthe Life University women’s cross country team had a successful inaugural season, culminating in a strong showing at the transouth Conference Championships in november. LIFE’s dynamic duo of mishea peltier and anika Dion did not disappoint as peltier ran away from the field, taking first place and earning a trip to the naIa nationals in Vancouver, Wash., on nov. 17.

With her performance, peltier also earned all-Conference honors, the transouth newcomer of the Year and the runner of the Year awards. Dion put in a great performance of her own, placing fourth, earning all-Conference honors and just missing a trip to nationals (the top three conference runners qualify for nationals).

Congratulations to Coach Faust, peltier and Dion for a tremendous start to what is sure to be a championship program!

Men’s wrestling hits the mat for inaugural season matches in S.C. and at homeafter completing his recruitment of some top-level grapplers, head wrestling coach mike miller is confident this inaugural men’s wrestling season will be a success. He looks forward to building a program that will be a model in the southeast.

the LIFE wrestling team opened their season nov. 3 at the Citadel Open in Charleston, s.C. Home meets will be Dec. 8 and Jan. 27. Coach miller invites all alumni and friends to campus on both dates to cheer on our wrestlers as they take it to the mat for their first at-home appearances of the season.

AthleticsRugby closes season with international honors, top national rankingsLife University rugby capped its 2011-2012 season with a summer of success at home and abroad.

All-American Honorsseveral of our players were selected by Usa rugby to take part in this summer’s all-american touring teams, an annual series of games in both 15s and 7s that gives top-level players a chance to compete with other all-americans versus international and elite-level competition. For many, this honor precedes selection to the U.s. national team.

In all, eight of our players were invited to the all-americans camp. these were Joe Cowley, Cam Dolan, James Lynch, Colton Cariaga, Glen maricelli, Jake mcFadden and O.J. auimatagi. From the camp, three teams were named:

15s TeamJoe Cowley, Cam Dolan and James Lynch were selected to travel to Ireland and play two matches against local equivalent competition.

7s Team OneColton Cariaga was selected to play in a 7s tournament in Glendale, Colo.

7s Team TwoColton Cariaga and Cam Dolan were selected to play in a 7s tournament in Chula Vista, Calif.

Preseason rankings net two no. 1snot long after the all-american tour, the preseason rankings came out for undergraduate rugby. Based on last year’s record, returning players and the depth of our program, rugbymag.com has ranked Life University’s 15s team no. 1 in the country.

the rankings for 7s rugby were also announced, and rugbymag.com initially ranked Life University’s 7s team no. 4 in the country.

most recently, our 7s team traveled to tallahassee, Fla., for the

south Independent rugby Conference

tournament. the winner of this event earns an automatic

spot in the Usa rugby national championship

in December in College station, texas.

really, this tournament came down to an expected matchup versus arkansas state, who also went through group play with ease. In a hotly contested final, both teams matched each other try for try. With zero time on the clock and LIFE with possession in a tie match, Joe Cowley scored the winning try and gave LIFE the victory.

after the tournament victory, the most recent rugbymag.com rankings now have LIFE ranked no. 1 in the country in 7s. this means, as of this writing, that your LIFE rugby team is ranked no. 1 in the country in both 15s and 7s.

4 stUDent spOtLIGHtfor the second year in a row, Life University set another precedent by offering free Ce to the masses. this year, the first 1,300 doctors who registered for the 2012 fall Ce event, held sept. 26–30, received their registration for free. with the help of our generous sponsors, Life was able to add an additional 400 free slots from the year before, when we offered 900 free spots. in total, 1,500 doctors attended this five-day event, which allowed attendees the ability to earn more than 30 hours of Ce credit with 15 different tracks ranging from Philosophy to neurology. Above all, alumni from across the country rallied together in camaraderie to celebrate Life and the chiropractic community.

35th Class reunion On thursday evening, 15 members of Life University’s graduating class of 1977, and their spouses and guests, attended the 35th Class reunion dinner. prominent faculty members and mentors were also present, including Dr. Gerry Clum, Dr. D.D. Humber and Dr. Charlie Kalb. the celebration began with a cocktail hour before dinner and concluded with a flagpole dedication. Upon completion of the reunion dinner, the 15 alums had an opportunity to immortalize their LIFE memories inside a peace pole, which was planted in the Garden of Lasting purpose (GLp). Currently under construction, the GLp will house peace poles from every graduating class. additionally, every year, the 35th reunion class will get the opportunity to plant one of their own. the poles will contain pieces of paper featuring memories, thoughts and goals. “may peace prevail on Earth,” will be inscribed on the outside of the poles in varying languages that define the diverse makeup of each reunion class. this year’s peace pole features four languages: English, Hebrew, Cherokee and arabic. During the next day’s president’s address and Luncheon, the Class of 1977 presented a class gift of $86,000 to Life University.

30th Class reunion In celebration of their 30th reunion year, Life University’s graduating class of 1982 united together in fellowship for their reunion breakfast saturday morning. For some, it had been many years since they had been on campus. Despite this, classmates reveled in each other’s com-pany while reminiscing over old photos and yearbooks. similarly, the classmates gathered around to celebrate the past, present and future of LIFE. throughout the years, these graduates have served vital roles in the chiropractic community locally as well as nationally. addition-ally, the class of 1982 presented a class gift of $7,100 to Life University during the president’s address and Luncheon.

Alumni and friends Party and Class reunionsFor one night, Life University was adorned with polyester pants, over-sized sunglasses and big hair—all for the 70s-themed alumni and Friends party and Class reunions. partygoers gathered under the disco ball limelight to celebrate good friends, good food and good music. the party featured a rocking five-piece band, a giant twister game, a caricaturist, a magician and Life University’s own groovy mascot, Doc

the running Eagle. Guests sported retro accessories inside the photo booth, got tangled in twister knots alongside 16 of their closest friends and boogied to the tunes of Lynyrd skynyrd and stevie Wonder. the tent was decorated to the nines with shag carpeting, bold-colored beanbags, lava lamps, psychedelic wall hangings and black lights—no detail or corner was spared. there was even a special VIp area for those celebrating a class reunion (years 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007). the LIFE alumni association is still recovering from this blast from the past. see you all next year!

Life University wishes to thank the following sponsors who made our fall CE event so successful: Standard Process, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Beyond Organic, BioGenesis Nutraceu-ticals, The family Practice, DrNatura, impac, inc., The Joint, Multi Radiance Medical, NCMiC insurance Company, Neuroinfiniti, Nordic Naturals, PayDC Chiropractic Software, Pettibon Sys-tem, ScripHESSCO, TextMD, inc., Xooma Worldwide.

1974 for a visit to what was to be the new college. Dr. sid announced they were going to open the college in January 1975. It only took about 15 seconds to decide I would rather live my winters in marietta, Ga., as opposed to Davenport, Iowa.

Life College’s inaugural class of 1977 celebrates 35 years of LIFE

Life University’s first graduating class celebrated their 35th reunion during LIFE’s Fall CE event sept. 26-30. For many of these 1977 grads, the week’s reunion festivities were the first times they’d seen each other again since they walked across the stage at graduation 35 years ago.

the 35th reunion festivities could not have happened without the help of the Class of 1977 reunion Chairs. their insight, guidance and memories from their time at LIFE helped shape what was an amazing reunion experience for every-one. thank you to our 1977 Class Chairs: Drs. Debra Flynn, steve Warfield, mike Ungerank and Gerry Clum, who also took the time to remember LIFE “back when,” and to share their memories with us.

at 7 a.m., I got a call from Dr. Clum, who [had hurt his] lower back and could not find a D.C. Knowing my father had taught me how to adjust, he called me. We only had flat benches at the time and my father had taught me the thompson-Derifield technique, which used a drop mechanism. When I asked Dr. Clum, who could barely stand up, what to do, he said, “Do what your Daddy taught

before I went to palmer, and while I was [there] I regularly attended the Life DE meetings. It was from this group that the support for Life Chiropractic College emerged. I was one of the charter faculty on the job when Life Chiropractic College opened in January 1975.

favorite Life memory: One very clear memory I have is from the day the campus was opened. at that time, the College consisted of the right half of the main administration building, the other half of the building housed Western Union and the local unemployment office. For our dedication day, I was tasked with making sure the signage on the driveway was in place, so for that afternoon I took down the unemployment signage and the Western Union signage and installed the first Life Chiropractic College sign. as you could imagine, Western Union and the unemployment folks weren’t at all happy about this and we went into a cartoon-style rotation of taking signs down, put-ting them up, etc. It almost came to blows before the day was over!

why do you support Life? more than 40 years ago, my relationship with Dr. Williams and the direction he advocated for the profession began. a great deal has changed in and around Life Chiro-practic College, now Life University, over the years, but the heart of why we were about this effort and the core mission we sought to achieve in chiropractic and health care has remained unchanged and as exciting today as it was when I was in my early 20s.

His Life: now LIFE’s presidential Liai-son for External affairs and Director of the LIFE Octagon, Clum retired as presi-dent of Life Chiropractic College West in 2011. He is active in several chiropractic and health care organizations and blogs at tls.drgerryclum.com.

Debra Flynn, D.C. (’77)Key West Chiropractic, Key West, fla.

Quote: “You will get it later.” Because we were the first class, there weren’t a lot of materials readily available!

why Life? Dr. sid told me I was sup-posed to be a chiropractor. I was going to just be a supportive wife, but he kept insisting that this was my calling. I even had a dream that he was telling me to become a DC!

favorite Life memory: In the middle of classes, all of a sudden, Dr. sid would walk in and sit down and talk philosophy with us.

why do you keep coming back to Life? I am so proud to have graduated from LIFE! It’s the most cutting edge, pro-found, philosophically based [chiroprac-tic institution]—you have to experience it to believe it.

Her Life after Life: after a post-graduate internship at the Gonstead Clinic of Chiropractic, Flynn started her own practice and eventually relocated to Key West, Fla., where she’s served the community for more than 32 years. Her nephew, ryan Barnett, is now in chiro-practic college at LIFE.

Gerry Clum, D.C. (’77)founding “Day One” faculty member at Life College

why Life? I was on the palmer faculty in 1974 when Dr. Wil-liams announced the establishment of Life Chiropractic College. through Dr. Cassan [Clum’s mentor], I had been introduced to Dr. Williams

you.” Well, I did and when Dr. Clum was standing straight again he stated, “What a way to start clinic, without any official technique classes, don’t you think?”

why do you support Life? my father, Dr. sid, Dr. Clum, Dr. ron Watkins, Dr. Charley Kalb and Dr. Ed ambrose were the positive [influences] that would lead anyone to keep giving back to the college and to our profession.

His Life after Life: mike Ungerank still works 40 hours a week at his Jonesboro, ark., clinic.

I am proud to report to you that we have completed Phase II of the 20/20 Vision! The Exceptional Experience was markedly different from Phase I, yet an equally important goal as we move forward in the grand vision of what Life University will be by the end of this decade. Phase I contained many items that were visible, such as construction and renovations. Phase II was much more internal, as we focused on becoming a more student-centered organization and adopting a service model in all facets of our operations. While the end result may not be as visible on the surface, I assure you the effects are felt in a positive way by every member of the LIFE community.

Life University is garnering nationwide respect and admiration for some of our other ongoing initiatives. For example, LIFE rugby continues to be a model program that is turning heads in the sport. Our undergraduate 15s team had an undefeated regular season en route to a semifinal run to the national championship. LIFE was ranked No. 2 in the country in the final USA Rugby poll. Our 7s team had an unprecedented run, winning two of the three national championships contested in the sport. The year capped off with the team being invited to the College Rugby Championship in Philadelphia this past June. The event, televised by NBC, gave Life University

the coverage, compliments and prestige you can’t buy with traditional marketing.

We also opened the LIFE Functional Neurology Center, a facility unlike any in the world, where groundbreaking chiropractic neurological research is conducted. Lastly, we completed our reaffirmation of accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). As you know, this process is critical to our existence, and I am pleased to report that we are now accredited with SACS through 2021. This year, we will be going through a similar process with the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) for our programmatic accreditation of our Doctor of Chiropractic degree.

The hard work and dedication of our fine faculty, staff and students are paramount to our continued success, but equally important is the generous support you have given to Life University. Thank you for your continued support as we move even closer to our 20/20 Vision. I hope to see you on the campus soon.

Sincerely,

Guy F. Riekeman, D.C.President

Financially supporting the mission of her employer isn’t a job requirement, but for Chris Nadine, provost project coordinator at Life University, giving back is all in a day’s work.

“All my life,” she says, “I’ve chosen employment based on congruency with my beliefs and the mission of the organization, and working for LIFE is no exception.” Nadine holds an Associate Legion of Chiropractic Philosophers (ALCP) from the Chiropractic Philosophy Diplomate program (as a non-chiropractor), and worked in a neighborhood center before being hired as a LIFE student recruiter in 2007. She joined Life University’s President’s Circle giving program that very same year.

“I initially signed up for the President’s Circle by giving the minimum required donation. Each year I re-evaluate my financial donations,

Pat and Mike Calcagno are brothers in the truest sense of the word. Both played rugby in their high school and college years, the latter while earning their D.C. degrees from LIFE. Pat enrolled after being inspired by the chiropractic care he received as a teenage rugby player and Mike followed suit with his brother’s encouragement.

Today, they operate five clinics together in the greater Chicago area. In addition to adjusting patients and overseeing their team of doctors, Pat handles the business decisions and Mike manages operations and quality of care.

Together, the brothers have been ongoing donors to LIFE and annual supporters of the rugby program. “The friendships I developed with players on the rugby program [while] enrolled in the chiropractic program have become life-long,” Mike says. “Those friendships and my campus experience helped me become the man I am today.”

Chris Nadine: All in a day’s work

Drs. Pat (’96) and Mike Calcagno (’98): Brothers with a purpose

and this year I chose to increase my donation to LIFE.” Nadine chooses to have regular donations withdrawn directly from each paycheck. “I’ve always found that when I commit to a donation by making it automatic, it just becomes part of my budget, and I don’t think about or miss the money. Making a commitment, creating a plan and utilizing technology makes giving easy.” She also regularly donates to the local Boys & Girls Clubs and the Chattahoochee River Keepers.

“I don’t consider it a luxury to be able to give,” she adds. “I consider it a blessing. I also think the synergy of many people pooling resources together accomplishes more than one individual trying to make a difference on his or her own.”

“Rugby was the bond,” Pat says, “but Chiropractic was the calling.”

When it comes to living Lasting Purpose, the Calcagnos are equally committed.

“We send students to LIFE. We support the rugby players and coaches. We give financially—both annually and to the campaigns,” Mike says.

“Chiropractic helps people live a life free from drugs and surgery,” Pat stresses, “and giving to LIFE allows that philosophy to be promoted.”

Thanks to members of the LIFE family like the Calcagno brothers, Life University is able to promote Chiropractic, not only through its academic programs, but through its top-ranked, internationally recognized rugby program. For these brothers and those like them, it’s a win-win situation.

Life University is dedicated to the idea of ensuring the world has access to vitalistic health care. this encompasses access to both Chiropractic and integrated care, and to an education rooted in chiroprac-tic and vitalistic philosophy. to that end, we would like to recognize those alumni and friends who have assisted us with our mission by referring a student to LIFE—

whether to our world-renowned Chiro-practic program, or any of our vital health and science-based degrees.

referring students to Life University helps advance our objective in three ways:• raises awareness of Chiropractic and

Vitalism around the world.• Increases the number of vitalistic

chiropractors and vitalistic-oriented

professionals worldwide.• makes a difference with Lasting purpose:

to Give, to Do, to Love, to serve, Out of a sense of abundance.alumni & Friends who referred a stu-

dent enrolling in the spring and summer 2012 quarters are listed below. these names were provided by students upon their application for admission.

Capital CampaignLIFE’s capital campaign, realizing the Vision, is a five-phase campaign that supports the University’s 20/20 strategy Vision. In July 2012, LIFE began the third phase of the campaign, called Investing in Excellence—academics, research, rugby.

President’s CircleWhen we turn our hands to the promotion of our chiropractic profession and the education of our neighbors, we turn our eyes to the president’s Circle for the resources—advice, wherewithal and influence—to reach out to the world. For more information, please contact Erin Dancer, Director of Developement, at 770-426-2975 or [email protected].

LIFEforce 1000the LIFEforce 1000 tribe is currently dedicated to two projects: looking for 1,000 committed members, and filling Life University with students who are passionate and will spread Chiropractic around the world, now and for decades to come. to that end, they have made a commitment to each other to accomplish three things: send five students to Life University in the next five years, host two student recruiting Events each year and attend a LIFEforce 1000 Weekend in atlanta within the next year. Life University is partnering with two firms that specialize in estate planning, asset investment and protection and legal counsel. alston & Byrd is a large legal firm in atlanta that has one of the best estate planning divisions in the United states. Henssler Financial is an investment firm in greater atlanta that specializes in asset growth and estate planning. Both are working with LIFE to assist with your needs. If you would like to talk with an expert about your long-term financial plan and create your estate, please contact Greg Harris, Vice president for University advancement, at 770-426-2836 or at [email protected].

In 2013, LIFE will host several estate planning and deferred giving seminars with its partners. If you are interested in learning more about these seminars or in attending, please call Greg.

While you’re thinking about how you can take advantage of these opportunities, here are several terms and tools with which you should become familiar:

Living trust document: this is a document that keeps your fam-ily out of probate court. this may be advisable for estates with considerable assets to be used together with a Will.

Planned Giving: Life partners with estate advisorsLast will and testament: Directs the distribution of property at your death, except property passing by beneficiary designation or joint ownership, when a Living trust is not used.

A Pour over will: Used with a Living trust. at the time of your death, a pour Over Will places any assets you failed to list on your schedule a into your Living trust.

Durable Power of Attorney: this document gives someone power to act on your behalf regarding your finances should you become temporarily or permanently incapacitated, either mentally or physically.

Advance Health Care Directive (Health Care power of attorney and Living Will): these documents contain your instructions to those whom you have selected as your health care agents with regard to your health care and the disposition of your remains after death.

Personal Property bequests: this is a list of your assets you want given to specific people or charities. It usually consists of pets, antiques, items of sentimental nature, jewelry, books, etc.

Procedure Upon Death: these are instructions to your family and loved ones that tell them what to do upon your death.

Guardianship (if applicable): a provision to name guardians for your minor children.

New online internship resourceIn keeping with its mission to empower students with the education, skills and values needed for career success and

life fulfillment, Life University is always available to help students secure internships. a new online tool available through the Cobb Cham-ber of Commerce (cobbchamber.org) can now help facili-

tate that process. While LIFE’s Business department has strong relationships with businesses in the community that can benefit students looking for real-world experience, now those businesses can use the Chamber’s website to post internship opportunities. the Chamber’s online career center is an easy-to-use resource for employees and students alike. students can search by company name, position title or posting date. the site can help build new relation-ships by letting businesses know that students are available. Cobb County is home to more than 350 international firms, including Home Depot and Lock-heed martin aeronautics. With so many great businesses located so close to Life University, LIFE students can certainly have their pick of internship sites. the Chamber’s website puts those opportuni-ties right at students’ fingertips, making it that much easier for students to gain valuable experience and apply what they have learned at LIFE.

Computers installed in the College of Undergraduate Studiesnow it’s easier to access your email and other online resources on LIFE’s campus. new Dell computers were installed during the break after summer quarter in the College of Undergraduate studies rooms 130 and 131. they are available for use by everyone from journalism students to nutrition students and computer infor-mation management students.

Social media courses enhance LIFE’s curriculum In today’s fast-paced world, businesses need to use technology to stay ahead of the competition. In order to stay on the cutting edge and help stu-dents navigate the relationship between social media and entre-preneurship, Life University now offers two new courses: social Entrepre-neurship and Entrepreneurship & social media. the social Entrepreneur-ship course enables students to combine the pragmatic and results-oriented methods of a business entre-preneur with the goals of a social reformer. the social entrepreneur seeks innovative solutions to social problems that have an impact on society. students select an innovative

project utilizing techniques of success-ful social entrepreneurs. this can help students learn how to market a busi-ness, a skill that could come in handy after graduation—especially considering that so many businesses today eschew traditional print marketing in favor of a strong online presence.

taking this idea a step further, the Entrepreneurship & social media course examines entrepreneurship and the use of social media as a catalyst for new business ventures, providing an interactive marketing tool and medium for social, nonprofit and business entrepreneurs. students analyze vari-ous written sources, models and case studies for increasing creativity and marketing effectiveness and efficiency;

strategies for evaluating and planning websites; and how to use social media blogs, news releases, podcasts and viral marketing to reach the consumer of their chosen

service or product. achieving positive customer relationships

that are continuous is the goal for suc-cessful entrepreneurs. this course is also designed to help students learn how to

use their businesses to give back to the community. Enrollment

for both courses has been steadily increasing since they

were first introduced in 2010, indicating that the University is meeting students’ needs when it comes to rel-evant coursework.

New facesIf you visited the Department of alumni relations recently, you would have noticed a new face. Kelsey Donaldson, a recent graduate of Georgia College & state University, joined the alumni

relations team in september. Before coming to LIFE, Donaldson interned at Camp twin Lakes, where she assisted with planning special events. “We are

very excited to have Kelsey join us! I believe she will be an outstanding fit for our department,” says alumni relations manager Leila tatum.

the alumni association is enjoying an infusion of new talent as well. recently, the alumni board voted to install rachel stockwell, D.C. (’12) as the

representative for student recruitment and Engagement. stockwell, a recent graduate of the College of Chiropractic, has settled in the

atlanta area and is starting a practice. “I’m very excited to be a part of the association,” says rachel, “as I am quite a proud alumna! I think we have an incredible opportunity to spread LIFE’s chiropractic message and I’m looking forward to working with everyone.”

LIFE on the road In august, several members of the LIFE community were in Florida twice, representing the University. First, alumni relations manager Leila tatum, Vp for advancement Greg Harris and traveling recruiter Eryc Jones hosted a booth in the exhibit hall at the Florida Chiropractic society Convention in palm Beach at Breakers Hotel. tatum and Harris also hosted an alumni & Friends reception.

meet the three dedicated individuals behind LIFE’s innovative postgraduate programming, and the largest free chiropractic CE offering in the world.

Kathy Stavovy-Bannisterinterim Director of Postgraduate Programs9 years at LifE Before being named our interim direc-tor, Kathy served as postgrad’s assistant director for five years. today, she over-sees all continuing education program-ming offered by Life University, as well as

our CE sponsor-ships for outside organizations. “as a depart-ment,” she adds, “we support other depart-ments on campus with online reg-

istrations, online ticket sales, continuing education for faculty, scheduling room rentals on weekends and having staff available on weekends to support pro-grams like [those offered by] the Carrick Institute and Irene Gold board reviews, along with our own [LIFE] programs.” Kathy also coordinates the program schedule for our annual Fall CE program, which she and her team start working on the day after the event ends each year. “Having the doctors come up to us and tell us what a great program it was and that they will be back next year, [and] how impressed they are with the way Life University has set itself apart from other chiropractic schools—it makes all the hard work worth it,” she says.

When she’s not in her office in LIFE’s Center for Chiropractic Education, meet-ing with colleagues all over campus, or traveling to chiropractic and continuing education events, Kathy loves to play softball. “I play co-ed softball in two different leagues from march though november every year, [and have] for the last 12 years.”

Robin Parkerregistration Coordinator3 years, 8 months at LifErobin is often the first person you see when you walk into the postgraduate office. “I handle all receipts, compile

daily deposits, data entry, fil-ing, answer the main incoming line, register all attendees and speakers, handle weekend room

rental for the CCE building and assist Kathy as needed,” she says. Like many LIFE staff members, robin also serves as a friend and unofficial mentor to stu-dents and her peers. Her proudest LIFE accomplishment? “a student came in to the office to tell me he was going to quit the D.C. program and to say good-bye. after a long discussion, a lot of tears and, eventually, laughter, he graduated last september.” this is what she loves best about working at LIFE: “the deep family bond that flows within the LIFE community.” Fall CE is a great time to witness this bond in action, robin points out, recalling “the amazing energy on campus” as well as the chance to see old friends like Dr. Whitaker, whom she says,

“has become a very dear friend to amber and me, and our personal chiropractor.”

robin is also a true animal lover, and passionately supports rescue and reha-bilitation programs.

Amber LewisPostgraduate Programs Coordinator3 years, 8 months at LifE as the programs coordinator for post-grad, amber creates and submits our applications to the state boards of chi-ropractic examiners, which must approve

all continuing education cred-its for chiro-practic seminars that LIFE hosts or sponsors. she also draws up contracts, cre-ates invoices,

processes your attendance Verification Forms (aVFs) and ensures all our pro-grams and procedures are up to date and in accordance with state board rules and regulations. amber takes great pride in building strong relationships with clients, references, DCs, colleagues and pretty much everyone she serves on a daily basis. In fact, “my favorite part of Fall CE,” she says, “is seeing some of my favorite doctors on campus and get-ting an adjustment from Dr. Whitaker. He’s the best!” she also enjoys hearing alumni and DCs share stories about their time as LIFE students.

away from her desk, amber expresses her creative side through scrapbooking, and shopping for finds that show off her personality.
