The Inglis Australian Easter
Yearling Sale Round 2, to be held
in conjunction with the Inglis
Scone Yearling Sale at Riverside
Stables on Sunday, will be the latest unusual
quirk in a sales season that has been upended,
rearranged and impacted heavily by the
Covid-19 pandemic.
Australia’s strict quarantine protocols will
prevent any international visitors who are not
already in the country from being at Inglis’
Warwick Farm complex, creating a different
market for a prized group of yearlings.
Among those who will be absent is Hong
Kong-based bloodstock agent George Moore,
with quarantine ensuring that he is logistically
unable to be in Sydney for the sale before
returning to the Asian mecca as his father John
wraps up his Sha Tin training operation after 35
years. Continued on page 2>>

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to buy
at Easter Round 2 as I really would want to be down there inspecting these
horses,” Moore told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday. “I’m really not one
to be buying blind and we did already buy four horses at the initial Easter
sale, so I won’t be involved.
“Easter was stronger than I expected given everything that’s
happening, I reckon that could be the same for Round 2, but I’m not sure
that we’d have any more space to add some more yearlings to dad’s new
Australian stable.
“There will always be money from Hong Kong though so I’m sure
there will be Hong Kong interest.”
While John Moore still has five meetings to go in Hong Kong before
the season ends at Happy Valley on July 15, he has already begun to
implement programs with his brother Gary that will ensure that the
training partnership can hit their straps quickly when they officially begin
working together on August 1.
“We’re not sure at the moment when dad will get to Australia, it
depends on a few different things, but he is excited to get there,” George
Moore said. “We’ve got some really nice horses going into the stable and
they all need to be prepped so I’m pushing for dad to get down there
earlier, even if he has to do the two weeks of quarantine. He’s changing his
mind a bit but it won’t be too long before he’s in Australia. The horses are
already under their system and on their feed so it’s a process.”
The Moores will have 24 boxes at Rosehill and their stables will be full of
some of the most expensive horseflesh in the land. Among their supporters
will be China Horse Club, Newgate Farm and Arrowfield Stud, while Hong
Kong-based owner Boniface Ho is set to join forces with the Moores; that
will be a new association, with John Moore not training any of Ho’s horses
in Hong Kong.
However, the issue may not be filling the boxes but it may be finding the
space, especially given the Moore family already owns a number of horses that
race in their white and maroon colours as well.

“There are a couple of horses I bought
with China Horse Club which are already in the stable, like the Snitzel
that we bought out of Girl Hussler, the half-brother to Manuel and a horse
we know from Hong Kong in Taking Aim that we bought for $875,000 at
Easter,” George Moore said.
“We’ve got two big lots from Arrowfield, a Snitzel and a Not A Single
Doubt, they are two million-dollar horses. We’ve got the half-brother to
Aethero and Classique Legend, Bon Ho bought him for $1.1 million at
Easter, that’s already in the stable. We’ve got a Capitalist colt for Bon Ho
too and dad has a Siyouni filly from a good European family, so that’s five.
“And then we’ve got a couple of Vincent Li’s horses, one of the owners
from Hong Kong - he has Larson and Shouson with us in Hong Kong at the
moment - as well as our purchases from Easter and from Magic Millions,
so that’s another eight or so. We’ve got some horses with stables in Sydney
that will come across to us and we have to fit in our personally-owned
horses too - I have shares in nine different horses and, while some of them
may be heading to Hong Kong and won’t go through his stable, five or six
of them will be with him. Dad has got shares in some too.
“We don’t have much room, but dad wants to have a very exclusive
stable with high-level horses.”
A lot of the focus has been on John Moore’s forced retirement in Hong
Kong after he turned 70 in March, bringing to an end a 35-year career that
saw him win seven Hong Kong championships, prepare numerous top-
class gallopers including the last
six to be named the Hong Kong
Horse of the Year, and set new
Hong Kong records for career wins
(1731) and prize-money (almost
HK$2 billion or AUD$375 million).
However, the effect of Moore’s
departure from Hong Kong is
more widespread as it will change
the operation of his son’s George
Moore Bloodstock operation, with
the 38-year-old one of the major
players in the lucrative market.
That said, the younger Moore says it will be mainly a superficial
change, with the agent buying horses like J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m) third
The Drinks Cart (Unencumbered) for Hong Kong clients in recent
days.
“I’m staying here in Hong Kong - my business is separate to dad’s
business,” he said. “I will still be selling to my own clients and I guess the
major difference is that we have to figure out which stables they will be
going to now. My whole business structure is changing slightly because I
need to supply horses for dad’s stable too, which is fine by me, but Hong
Kong will still be a priority.
I think, this year, Goodwood
will take the place of Ascot and I think that more will be keen to sell after Goodwood- George Moore

“It’s a bit of a difficult market at the
moment as a lot of horses aren’t for sale. We’ve been trying to buy a
number of horses recently in both Europe and Australia and a lot of our
offers have been knocked back. One example is Pyledriver, a lot of Hong
Kong buyers would love to get their hands on him, but he’s not for sale as
he’s going to the Derby next week. The clients are still there, they are still
buying horses, but it’s been hard to get these offers accepted.
“It’s interesting too because, during the lockdown, it was obviously difficult
to source horses in Europe and New Zealand given they weren’t racing, so buyers
were paying a premium to get horses from Australia. Some of the offers that were
on the table for horses like Masked Crusader, Kinane and Shadow Hero were very
big; obviously, only Shadow Hero was sold in the end.”
The acquisition period for horses bound for Hong Kong generally follows
an unofficial set calendar, based on when the big races are run and the
timetable to get horses into the city ahead of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series.
The weeks after Royal Ascot present as one of the most important windows,
with the three-year-old features usually done and dusted. However, with the
Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) being run next weekend along with the Prix du
Jockey-Club (Gr 1, 2100m), the usual schedule has been thrown out the window.
“There’s not that many horses that are coming out of Ascot that I know about,”
Moore said. “There was quite a bit of interest for those horses from America, but
the only horse really out of Ascot right now is Berlin Tango. Another horse that
has been sold to Hong Kong is Smokey Bear, but otherwise, it’s been pretty light.
“I think, this year, Goodwood will take the place of Ascot and I think
that more will be keen to sell after Goodwood. There’s still quite a market
for English horses in Hong Kong.”
The only horse from John Moore’s Hong Kong stable who will join
his Australian operation is a former Brit in Sunny Speed (Havana Gold),
who finished third to Furore (Pierro) and Waikuku (Harbour Watch) in
the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) last year. Known as Crack On Crack
On in the UK, he was a three-time winner at Lingfield, Haydock and Ascot
between seven furlongs and a mile.
“He’s down in Victoria with Ben Mason at the moment just
completing his rehab,” Moore said. “He’s coming back from a tendon
injury, nearly a year ago now, and we might train him on the other
leg in Melbourne just to keep him going counter-clockwise to take the
pressure off that tendon.”
One way in which Moore will enter new territory is in the tried
horse market in the UK, attempting to fulfill a family dream by finding a
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) horse.
It is a race that eluded his grandfather and namesake, legendary jockey
George Moore, whose best finish was third on Caranna (Volagnes) in
1956; the Melbourne Cup was the only trophy missing from a resume that
included every Australian major as well as the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
(Gr 1, 2400m), the Epsom Derby and the 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) among
other global features.ANZ – export as HiRes PDF, no crops/bleeds

John Moore has long stated his desire
to win the Cup and his son will be ready to scout the Tattersalls Horses In
Training Sale at Newmarket in late October looking to follow a well-tried
formula for sourcing potential staying stock for Australia.
“We will be opening up to the Horses In Training sale over in Europe
to look for a stout horse, potentially a Melbourne Cup horse,” he said.
“Even if not, maybe a Sydney Cup horse or any of those races in Sydney
which are worth a bit and are just below that level. There are a few options
there, we could syndicate or we could go into partnership with four or five
of our owners from Hong Kong.
“We’ve had quite a bit of interest, so that’s another door that might be
open. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but we’ve just needed the
right pieces in place. With dad down there, I know exactly how the horses
will be trained and what they will be doing. It’s just adapting to a changing
environment - instead of just buying those 2000-metre types for the Hong
Kong Derby, we’re looking for different types.
“It’s something we’ve done before. We were buying those Derby types
from the UK and once everyone flocked there, we went to Australia and we
were sourcing Horses of the Year from Australia. I like to think that we’ve
shown we’re good at adapting to new things in the past and, in a world
that is ever-changing, we’re just trying to make our operation work.”
Moore also believes that having his father in Sydney will have a
positive effect on racing in New South Wales, with more Hong Kong
owners willing to invest in racing prospects down under in addition to
those bound for Sha Tin.
“I’ve spoken to quite a few owners up here and they’ve indicated
that, with dad down there, they’d be more interested in investing heavily
in yearlings,” he said. “They know they will be getting something they
are familiar with as dad will prepare them at Rosehill in the same way he
would prepare them at Sha Tin. I think you will see some of the bigger
Hong Kong owners increasing their Australian portfolio.”
Momentum is everything in the Hong Kong racing environment,
where owners are notoriously fickle and a good or bad meeting can
change luck on a dime. And while the same momentum is less important
in Australian racing, the Moore family acknowledges that they are
hoping for a big first half of the season to be able to build the strongest
stable possible.
“Everything hinges on a strong start for dad and uncle Gary, but I
don’t see any reason why they won’t do well in their first year with the
amount of good stock they have coming through the stable,” George
Moore said. “We are hoping to have horses getting into races like the
Breeders’ Plate, some of those early two-year-old races, and obviously
we’d love to have some horses heading to the Golden Slipper so hopefully
we can have some early success.
“It really is an exciting time. Now, we just have to get dad down
there!”ANZ – export as HiRes PDF, no crops/bleeds

Great Southern Sale moved to SydneyInglis announced yesterday that the Great
Southern Sale, which was set to be held in
Melbourne, will be brought forward and
conducted in Sydney on July 9 in the wake of a
spike on Covid-19 cases in Victoria. “Following
significant consultation with vendors and
buyers, it has been agreed to move the Great
Southern Sale to Sydney,” Inglis said. “The
auction will now be held at Riverside on
Thursday, July 9, a day after the Australian
Weanling Sale, creating a spectacular two-day
offering of the southern hemisphere’s finest
weanlings. Over 400 weanlings will be offered
across two days of the consolidated sale, with
the selling schedule to be confirmed in the
coming days.” Interested parties who intend
on being at Riverside Stables for the Great
Southern will need to register to comply with
Inglis’ Covid Safe policy, as is the case for the
Easter Round 2 and Scone Yearling Sales (July
5) and the Australian Weanling Sale (July 8).
The Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale (July 16)
is expected to go ahead as planned at Inglis’
Oaklands Junction complex on July 16.
Seven for HeadwaterVinery Stud’s first season sire Headwater
(Exceed And Excel) recorded his seventh
individual winner yesterday when Water Dove
(2 f ex She’s Warrego by Giant’s Causeway) took
out a Dubbo open-age maiden plate over 1110
metres. Owned by Vinery general manager
Peter Orton but carrying the colours of trainer
Brett Cavanough, Water Dove raced on the
speed under Chad Lever. She was quickly
joined on straightening and was clearly headed
off but, in a driving finish, she showed great
determination to fend off Great Excitement
(Bon Hoffa) by a head with Adios Steve (Night
Of Thunder) in third, a half length from the
winner. Water Dove was purchased by Belmont
Bloodstock for $20,000 at the Inglis Classic
Yearling Sale and is a half-sister to multiple
stakes placegetter Queen Of Wands (Not A
Single Doubt). Headwater will stand for a fee of
$13,750 (inc GST) in 2020.
Newnham eyeing Epsom for QuackerjackMark Newnham will give consideration to
an Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) bid for
Quackerjack (Not A Single Doubt) who could
also aim up for a shot at back-to-back Villiers
Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) titles. "A good, strong
gelding like him, there are lots of options,"
Newnham said. "There are a few early spring
races and then he can train on and have
another go at The Gong and maybe a Villiers."
Newnham, who is closing in on his best season
since taking out a licence in 2016-17 also hopes
to unearth a star among his current crop of
yearlings. "I need a replacement for Shadow
Hero," Newnham said. "We've got a lot of
yearlings coming through at the moment. We're
sorting out who are the early ones and just
giving them a bit of education."
Soxagon to chase black type winSoxagon (Rocker) will get his chance in stakes
company after winning at Doomben on the
weekend with connections now considering
the Glasshouse Handicap (Listed, 1400m) at the
Sunshine Coast on July 11. The four-year-old
posted an impressive performance on Saturday
to take his tally to six wins from 16 starts and
part-owner Brian Burke said that provided the
gelding continued to do well, he would head
to the Sunshine Coast. "He deserves a crack
at something better. The Spear Chief winner
ran quicker time than us but Soxagon wasn't
pushed out," Burke said. "He ran second to
Vega One in The Gateway last year so he isn't far
off the better ones."
Orphan foal to begin careerTwo-year-old gelding Wilsdorf (Unencumbered),
the horse who captured the hearts of the racing
industry in the first weeks of his life when he was
left an orphan, is set to begin his racing career at
Ballarat tomorrow. Wilsdorf’s dam, Gem Of Glen
Argyle (Piccolo), died from complications giving
birth to him at Three Bridges Thoroughbreds in
Eddington back in 2017. But with around-the-
clock dedication from the Liston family at Three
Bridges and assistance from the 'Mums4Bubs'
program, which pairs foster mares with orphan
foals, the son of Unencumbered (Testa Rossa)
survived those early weeks and began to thrive.
Now in the care of Lindsey Smith, Wilsdorf has
shown ability at the local jump-outs, including
victory in a recent 900-metre synthetic track hit-
out. He is set to face eight rivals when he makes
his debut over 1200 metres.

Familiar sight as Williams and Oliver lock hornsCraig Williams is relishing the now familiar
battle with Damian Oliver as he bids to claim
his ninth Melbourne jockeys’ premiership and
fifth in succession. Two winners at Caulfield on
Saturday, compared to Oliver's lone victory on
the nine-race card, took Williams' metropolitan
tally to 62 wins and he heads into the final month
of the 2019-20 season with a seven-win lead.
"It's a great competition with Damien," Williams
said after bringing up his winning double aboard
Morrissy (Snitzel) in the final race at Caulfield.
"I think when you go through the racing annals
for Victorian racing you're going to see this
competition there in black and white, and it's
fantastic. My team are working really hard but we
can't do it without the support of the owners and
trainers and most importantly the horses."
Egan brings up tonBilly Egan reached the 100-winner mark for
the first time in his 15-season career when
he partnered Resolute Lad (Reliable Man) to
victory at Ballarat yesterday. The success was
Egan’s first since returning from a six-meeting
suspension, which kept him out of the saddle
from June 21 to June 26. “I’ve been looking
forward to it,” Egan told Racing.com. “I sat on
99 all week with the suspension and I watched
a couple of Paddy’s (Payne) go around without
me and they bolted in. Sometimes when your
momentum slows up you think you’ll never get
there, but to get it off the back so soon is pretty
nice.”
Away Game to follow Loving Gaby routeCiaron Maher and David Eustace’s star juvenile
filly Away Game (Snitzel) is set to follow a similar
spring path to that of her Group 1-winning
stablemate Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) last
year. Maher and Eustace prepared Loving Gaby
to win the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at
Moonee Valley as a spring three-year-old and
they will try to get Away Game to the Group 1
sprint this year. "The Manikato is in mind and
then possibly the Coolmore Stud Stakes, but
we'll be guided by her," Eustace said. "She's
in pre-training at Pakenham and has been
there a week or so and she looks fantastic.
She has furnished really well and has matured
a lot and we're really looking forward to this
campaign." Eusatace added that Loving Gaby
has completed her pre-training is due to return
to their Caulfield stable this week.

Connections knock back Brandenburg offer
Australian racing has continued to stem the tide of
promising horses heading offshore with the owners
of Brandenburg (Burgundy) knocking back lucrative
international offers. The news that the colt will
continue his career in Australia is music to the ears
of his trainer John Sargent, who believes the three-
year-old's best racing is still ahead. Brandenburg
has already compiled a strong resume, winning the
Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and placing against
older horses in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).
Sargent confirmed Brandenburg would have two
barrier trials before resuming in the Winx Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick in August. "He's matured
now. He was always a weak three-year-old, now he's
got a neck and a behind and he's strong," Sargent
said. "He should measure up with the big boys."

Mauritian Mudhoo living his dream Apprentice jockey Rohan Mudhoo proved to
be the star of the show at Riccarton on Saturday
when he produced a winning treble of rides on
the first day of racing in the South Island following
the easing of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.
The Mauritian-born 21-year-old is in the second
full season of his apprenticeship with Riccarton
trainer Mike McCann after following his older
brother Krishna to New Zealand to launch his
riding career. Saturday’s treble aboard stable
runners Gee Tee Eleanor (Sweet Orange), Frankie
The Fox (Ego) and the Ellis Winsloe-trained Irish
Excuse (No Excuse Needed) took him to the 50-
win mark for his career to date. “That is the first
time that I have ridden three winners in a row so
it was a great thrill,” Mudhoo said. “I was pretty
calm going into the day and my boss had told me
just to take things how they come and give the
horses the best possible chance I could.”

Chrono Genesis dominant in Takarazuka KinenChrono Genesis (Bago) registered the second
elite-level success of his career when running
out a comprehensive winner of the Takarazuka
Kinen (Gr 1, 2220m) on the Hanshin turf
yesterday. The Takashi Sato-trained four-year-
old crossed the line six lengths in front of Kiseki
(Rulership) with another five lengths back to
Mozu Bello (Deep Brillante) in a stretched out
field. Yesterday’s victory was a sixth in 11 starts
for last year’s Kyoto Shuka Sho (Gr 1, 2000m)
winner.

(Invincible Spirit) sired his eighth stakes winner
yesterday when Time Scale (2 f ex An Ghalanta
by Holy Roman Emperor) took out the Empress
Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Newmarket.
The Ralph Beckett-trained filly defeated
Concessions (Muhaarar) by a comfortable
margin of three and three-quarter lengths with
Undertake (Kodiac) a further two and a half
lengths back in third. Bred at Tweenhills Stud
by the An Ghalanta Partnership, Time Scale is
out of Listed scorer An Ghalanta (Holy Roman
Emperor) making her a half-sister to multiple
stakes placegetter Bletchley (Makfi). Further
back, this is the family of Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1,

ten starts. Holding on in a tight finish, he
got the nod in a photo by a short head from

Groomsbridge Stud in the UK where his 2020
fee was £1,500 (A$2700 approx).
128 for Invincible Spirit Irish National Stud flagbearer Invincible Spirit
(Green Desert) landed his 128th stakes winner
yesterday when the regally bred Repartee (3
c ex Pleasantry by Johannesburg) took out
the Carnarvon Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Windsor.
The Kevin Ryan-trained filly defeated Above
(Anjaal) by three-quarters of a length with
Maystar (Mayson) coming home a further
length and a quarter away in third. Purchased
for 310,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls
October Yearling Sale, Repartee is out of
Pleasantry (Johannesburg) making him a
three-quarter brother in blood to Juddmonte
stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit). He is also
a half-brother to Group 2 placegetter Fajjaj
(Dawn Approach) while his granddam is Group
1 winner and dual Group 1 runner-up Zenda
(Zamindar). Further back, this is the family
of Juddmonte resident Oasis Dream (Green
Desert) and first season sire New Bay (Dubawi).
Invincible Spirit stood for a fee of €100,000
(A$180,000 approx) in 2020.
11 for ZebedeeThe late Zebedee (Invincible Spirit) sired his
11th individual stakes winner when Pogo (4
c ex Cute by Diktat) took out the Midsummer
Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Windsor yesterday.
The Charlie Hills-trained entire defeated
Urban Icon (Cityscape) by five and a half
length with Foxtrot Lady (Foxwedge) coming
home a further three-quarters away for third.
Purchased for €10,500 at the Goffs November
Foal before being pinhooked for £32,000 at the
Goffs UK Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale, Pogo
is out of stakes performer Cute (Diktat). Cute is
out of Danehill (Danzig) mare Gleam Of Light,
making her a half-sister Pikaboo (Pivotal) who
is the dam of last month’s 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1,
1m) winner Love (Galileo). Zebedee stood at
Cornerstone Stud for five seasons before dying
in 2019.
12 for PowerOaklands Stud resident Power (Oasis Dream)
sired his 12th individual stakes winner when
Wakanaka (2 f ex Storyline by Kodiac) took
out yesterday’s Premio Vittoria Crespi (Listed,
1200m) at Milan. Wakanaka is the only winner
from two to race out of Storyline (Kodiac)
who herself is out of the Listed-placed Petite
Histoire (Desert Story). Further back, this is
also the family of Group 3 victor Whitbarrow
(Royal Abjar). Wakanaka joins the likes of Gift
Of Power and Peace Envoy as a juvenile stakes
winner for Power, who stands at Oaklands Stud
in New Zealand for a fee of NZ$11,000 in 2020.
Magical back with Group 1 victoryAfter being retired at the end of last year,
champion mare Magical (5 m Galileo - Halfway
To Heaven by Pivotal) returned to the races
with an emphatic victory in yesterday’s Pretty
Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at the Curragh. The
Aidan O’Brien-trained multiple Group 1
winner defeated Cayenne Pepper (Australia) by
four and a half lengths with Fleeting (Zoffany)
finishing a further length and three-quarters
back in third. Magical is out of multiple
Group 1 winner Halfway To Heaven (Pivotal),
making her a sister to fellow Group 1 scorer
Rhododendron and Group 3 victor Flying The
Flag. She is one of 85 elite-level winners for
Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), while she is also one of
five Group 1 scorers bred on the cross between
the champion stallion and Cheveley Park
resident Pivotal (Polar Falcon).
Greenlands glory for Speak In ColoursThe Joseph O’Brien-trained Speak In Colours
(5 c Excelebration - Maglietta Fina by Verglas)
got back to winning ways yesterday in the
Greenlands Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at the Curragh.
The five-year-old was last seen finishing fifth
by three lengths in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes
(Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot, while his last victory
came in the Renaissance Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) last
September. This was his sixth win from 21
starts, which also include two Listed races and
the 2018 Phoenix Sprint Stakes (Gr 3, 6f), also
at the Curragh. Ridden by Shane Crosse, Speak
In Colours raced prominently and took it up
over a furlong from home before seeing off the
challenge of the filly Forever In Dreams (Dream
Ahead) and Buffer Zone (Bated Breath) by a
head each.

Four for Champs ElyseesChamps Elysees (Danehill) sired his fourth
individual Group 1 winner when the late-
maturing Way To Paris (7 h ex Grey Way by
Cozzene) made his elite-level breakthrough
at the age of seven with victory in yesterday’s
Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2400m).
Having given Prix du Jockey-Club (Gr 1, 2100m)
winner Sottsass (Siyouni) a fright when the
pair clashed in the Prix Ganay (Gr 1, 2100m) at
Chantilly last time out, the Andrea Marcialis-
trained entire was not winning out of turn as he
registered the sixth victory of his 32-race career
when beating Nagano Gold (Sixties Icon) by
a neck with Ziyad (Rock Of Gibraltar) just a
head further behind in a tight three-way finish.
Champs Elysees, the sire of Ascot Gold Cup
(Gr 1, 2m 4f) winner Trip To Paris and 1,000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) victor Billesdon Brook, died
in 2018 from a heart attack at the age of 15.
70 for Lope De Vega Ballylinch Stud stalwart Lope De Vega
(Shamardal) sired his 70th individual stakes
winner when Simeen (3 f ex Samadrisa
by Oasis Dream) took out yesterday’s Prix
Volterra (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. The
filly defeated Scripturale (Makfi) by three and
a half lengths with Beaute Pour Toi (Camelot)
a short-neck away in third. Simeen is the only
foal out of Samadrisa (Oasis Dream) who is
a half-sister 2010 joint Champion 3YO Filly in
Europe, Sarafina (Refuse To Bend) as well as
stakes winners Sandagiyr (Dr Fong) and Sanaya
(Barathea). Simeen joins the likes of Spanish
Whisper and Spanish Reef as a stakes-winning
filly by former shuttler Lope De Vega, who
stood at Ballylinch Stud for a career-high fee of
€100,000 (A$180,000 approx) in 2020.
55 for FrankelJuddmonte stallion Frankel (Galileo) sired his
55th individual stakes winner when Restiany
(3 c ex Restiadargent by Kendargent) took
out yesterday’s Prix de Saint-Patrick (Listed,
1600m) at Saint-Cloud. The three-year-old
colt defeated Twist (Pivotal) by a length and
a half with Arapaho (Lope De Vega) coming
home a further length away in third. Passed in
for €240,000 at the Arqana Deauville August
Yearling Sale, Restiany is out of dual Group-
winning mare Restiadargent (Kendargent).
Further back, this is the family of Matron
Stakes (Gr 3, 9f) winner Coachwhip (So You
Think). Frankel stood at Juddmonte’s Banstead
Manor Stud in Newmarket for a fee of £175,000
(A$315,000 approx) in 2020.
Poulains winner scores first four-year-old victoryPersian King (4 c Kingman - Pretty Please by
Dylan Thomas), surprisingly beaten first-up
in the Prix de Montretout (Listed, 1600m) at
Chantilly, scored a workmanlike victory in
yesterday’s Prix du Muguet (Gr 2, 1600m) at
Saint-Cloud. Ridden on the speed by Pierre-
Charles Boudot in the five-runner field, last
year’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner looked in plenty of trouble at the 300
metres when he was joined by a wall of chasers.
However, after taking time to go through his
gears, he won cosily at the finish by a length and
a quarter over Pretreville (Acclamation) with
Skalleti (Kendargent) another three-quarters
of a length away in third. Persian King is likely
to return to Group 1 company in the Prix
d’Ispahan (Gr 1, 1800m) on July 19.
Five for PomodoroThe good weekend for Pomodoro (Jet Master)
continued when victory for Caralluma (2
f ex Kalanchoe by Kahal) in the Devon Air
Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Greyville on Sunday
provided him with his fifth individual stakes
winner. The Sean Tarry-trained filly beat Due
Diligence (Silvano) by four lengths with Stella
Act (Act Of War) another half length away in
third. Dual Grade 1 winner Pomodoro stands
at Klawervlei Stud in his native South Africa.
25 for GimmethegreenlightMore than Ready’s (Southern Halo) son
Gimmethegreenlight sired his 25th individual
stakes winner when Gold Season (3 c ex Miss
Gold Digger by Rich Man’s Gold) took out
the Gatecrasher Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on
yesterday’s Greyville card. The Ashley Fortune-
trained three-year-old beat Master Of Disguise
(Mambo In Seattle) by a length and a half with
Royal Exhibit (Oratorio) another neck away in
third. Gimmethegreenlight is the sire of three
winners at the highest level in South Africa,
including Yulong Prince, runner-up in this
year’s Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill.
More Grade 1 glory for Rainbow BridgeLast season’s Sun Met Handicap (Gr 1, 2000m)
winner Rainbow Bridge (5 c Ideal World -
Halfway to Heaven by Jet Master) registered his
third win at the highest level when he got back
to winnings ways in yesterday’s Gold Challenge
(Gr 1, 1600m) at Greyville. Without a victory
since landing the Greyville Champions Cup
(Gr 1, 1800m) in July last year, the Eric Sands-
trained six-year-old came out on top in a close
finish, beating Vardy (Var) by three-quarters
of a length with Do It Again (Twice Over) just
another neck away in third. Rainbow Bridge
now has six stakes successes among his tally of
eight wins from 16 starts.
Pudding tastes more Grade 1 successSummer Pudding (4 f Silvano - Cherry On
The Cake by Strike Smartly) stretched her
unbeaten record to seven when taking out the
Woolavington 2000 (Gr 1, 2000m) at Greyville
yesterday. Trained by Paul Peter, the four-
year-old filly registered her second success
at the highest level as she got the better of
Driving Miss Daisy (Master Of My Fate) by
three-quarters of a length with Lady Of Steel
(Gimmethegreenlight) another length and
a quarter back in third. Summer Pudding’s
perfect record includes five stakes victories.
Greenlight strikes againGot The Greenlight (4 c Gimmethegreenlight
- Command Chi by Commands) notched his
third elite-level win with victory in yesterday’s
Daily News 2000 (Gr 1, 2000m) at Greyville. The
Joey Soma-trained four-year-old, who already
has victories in the Premiers Champion Stakes
(Gr 1, 1600m) and South African Classic (Gr
1, 1800m) on his CV, added another big prize
when running out a length and a half winner.
Padre Pio (Vercingetorix) got the better of
Golden Ducat (Philanthropist) in the tussle
for second with a short-head separating the
pair. Now the winner of four stakes races, Got
The Greenlight is out of the winning mare
Command Chi (Commands).

Six for AuthorizedFormer Darley stallion Authorized (Montjeu)
registered his sixth individual Group 1 winner
on Saturday when Santiago (3 c ex Wadyhatta by
Cape Cross) took out the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m
4f). Santiago is a rarity in that he is by a Darley
stallion racing under the Coolmore banner, with
the Lynch Bages operation of the Shanahan
family purchasing Santiago’s dam Wadyhatta
(Cape Cross), in foal to Authorized, for €275,000
at the 2016 Arqana Summer Sale. The colt hails
from the family of Urban Sea (Miswaki) who is the
dam of champion sires Galileo (Sadler’s Wells)
and Sea The Stars (Cape Cross). Santiago became
Authorized’s third European Group 1 winner,
joining Ambivalent and Seal Of Approval. His
other three have come in Australia with Hartnell,
Complacent and Pounamu. Authorized, who
stood at Haras du Logis in France from 2014, was
sold to the Turkish Jockey Club last year and stood
his first season in Turkey in 2020 at a fee of 20,000
lira (A$4,250 approx).
O’Brien makes it 14 Irish Derby winsSantiago, sent off 2-1 favourite for the Irish
Derby, continued his perfect three-year-old
campaign and gave Aidan O’Brien a 14th
victory in the Classic, leading home a 1-2-3-
4 for the Ballydoyle maestro. Santiago, who
won the Queen’s Vase (Gr 2, 1m 6f) at Royal
Ascot to kick off his 2020 season, held off the
late surge of Tiger Moth (Galileo), with Dawn
Patrol (Galileo) making strong late headway
to grab third just ahead of Order Of Australia
(Australia). “He's a lovely staying type of horse
and they went an honest gallop,” O’Brien said.
“We thought he might be a St Leger horse and
be one to look forward to as a Cup horse next
year, and the horses behind him are still babies,
so they're there to look forward to as well.”
Santiago still in the Epsom mixAn audacious attempt to land back-to-back
Derby wins in successive weeks remains a
possibility for Santiago. O’Brien had indicated
last week that Hampton Court Stakes (Gr 3,
1m 2f) winner Russian Emperor (Galileo),
Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) second Vatican
City (Galileo) and Mogul (Galileo), who
disappointed at Royal Ascot, were set to be
in his Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) team, with
Amhran Na Bhfiann (Galileo) and Mythical
(Camelot) also mentioned, in addition to
Armory (Galileo). However, speaking in a
television interview yesterday morning, O’Brien
did not rule out Santiago or any of those beaten
in the Irish Derby from another Classic date
just seven days on. "It’s very possible,” he told
Luck On Sunday. “I spoke to John (Magnier),
Michael (Tabor) and Derrick (Smith) yesterday
and the entries are being made on Monday.
They’ll wait to see what everybody thinks before
they decide to make an entry or not. If any of
them have come out of the race exceptionally
well and they want to make an entry, then that’s
what will happen.”
57 for KodiacTally-Ho Stud stalwart Kodiac (Danehill) brought
up his 57th individual stakes winner on Saturday
when Frenetic (2 f ex Moojha by Forest Wildcat)
proved too speedy in the First Flier Stakes (Listed,
5f) at the Curragh. The Ger Lyons-trained filly, a
Navan maiden winner on debut, raced all on her
own on the stands’ side under Colin Keane and
never looked likely to lose her advantage, crossing
the wire five lengths clear of Mooneista (Dandy
Man) with Eastern Voice (Vocalised) a further
half-length away in third. “She’s the fastest we
have and was our Queen Mary horse if we had
one,” Lyons said. “Ultimately we will work back
from the Cheveley Park. That will be my long-
term plan.” Kodiac stood for €65,000 (A$106,250
approx) in 2020.
Williams pair win on Derby undercardThe famous navy and white colours of
Australian Racing Hall of Fame owner Lloyd
Williams scored two Group 3 wins on the Irish
Derby undercard at the Curragh on Saturday
with Buckhurst (4 c Australia - Artful by Green
Desert) in the Alleged Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f)
and Twilight Payment (7 g Teofilo - Dream On
Buddy by Oasis Dream) in the Vintage Crop
Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 6f). Buckhurst beat only two
rivals, Sir Dragonet (Camelot) and Numerian
(Holy Roman Emperor), with Joseph O’Brien
confirming that the Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr 1,
1m 2.5f) was his likely next port of call. Twilight
Payment, who finished 11th in the Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) last year, may return after
his two and a half length win in the Vintage
Crop. “He could possibly go to Melbourne,
but the way things are at the moment we don’t
know if that is going to be an option with travel
restrictions,” O’Brien said.
Eight for Cairo PrinceAirdrie Stud’s Cairo Prince (Pioneerof The
Nile) scored an eighth stakes winner and
just his fourth graded stakes winner when
Dean Martini (3 g ex Soundwave by Friends
Lake) took out the Ohio Derby (Gr 3, 9f) at
Thistledown on Saturday. Dean Martini, who
was claimed by trainer Tom Amoss after he
won a maiden claimer at Churchill Downs on
May 17, defeated South Bend (Algorithms) by
three-quarters of a length, with Breeders’ Cup
Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f) winner Storm The Court
(Court Vision) a further two lengths away in
third. The win earned Dean Martini points
towards a Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) berth in
September, but Amoss was noncommittal after
the victory: “That's the carrot dangling in front
us. I don't know. We'll see.” Cairo Prince stood
at Airdrie Stud for US$25,000 (A$36,500 approx)
in 2020.
Newspaperofrecord dominant for Brown in Just A GameLeading American turf trainer Chad Brown
scored his fourth consecutive win in the Just
A Game Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Belmont with his
fourth different horse after Newspaperofrecord (4
f Lope De Vega - Sunday Times by Holy Roman
Emperor) joined Rushing Fall (More Than Ready),
A Raving Beauty (Mastercraftsman) and Antonoe
(First Defence) on the honour roll on Saturday.
The 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1,
1m) winner scored her first Grade 1 success since
that victory with a commanding three-length
triumph over Beau Recall (Sir Prancealot). The
winner’s stablemate Uni (More Than Ready), last
year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 1m) victor, was
in third. "It's a great race to win. I'm very happy
they kept it on the schedule," Brown said. "I'm
proud of her and proud of my staff for the job they
have done with her. She's training so comfortably.
They brought her into the paddock looking
magnificent."

Grade 1 winners take Churchill Downs features
Midnight Bisou (5 m Midnight Lute - Diva
Delite by Repent) and Tom’s d’Etat (7 g Smart
Strike - Julia Tuttle by Giant’s Causeway) have
both won bigger races than their respective
victories at Churchill Downs on Saturday, but
the manner of their individual scores in the
Fleur de Lis Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) and the Stephen
Foster Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) has them set up for a
big 2020. Midnight Bisou was first-up since
finishing a game second in the world’s richest
race, the Saudi Cup (1800m), and back against
the fillies and mares she won by eight and a
quarter lengths. Tom’s d’Etat, who spent the
first three years of his career searching for a
black-type win, is now on a roll and his four and
a quarter length win in the Stephen Foster has
earned him a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic
(Gr 1, 10f).
Grade 3 victory for Pharoah fillyHarvey's Lil Goil (3 f American Pharoah - Gloria
S by Tapit) added a second black-type win to her
CV on Saturday when winning the Regret Stakes
(Gr 3, 9f) at Churchill Downs. The Bill Mott-
trained filly beat Crystal Cliffs (Canford Cliffs)
by a head with In Good Spirits (Ghostzapper)
coming home a length and a half away in third.
Harvey's Lil Goil is one of three winners from
three foals out of the unraced mare Gloria S
(Tapit), who herself is a half-sister to three-
time Grade 1 victor I’ll Have Another (Flower
Alley) and dual Grade 3 scorer Golden Award
(Medaglia d’Oro). Further back this is the
family of former Spendthrift Australia shuttler
Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday). The filly’s
sire, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah
(Pioneerof The Nile), shuttles to Coolmore
Australia where he will stand for a fee of $55,000
(inc GST) in 2020.
