YOA YOA is a world-class symphony orchestra of gifted
young musicians, ages 18 to 30, representing more than 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere.
YOA’s mission is to bring together energetic, talented musicians to
pursue excellence and celebrate cultural diversity as a catalyst for social change. YOA has become an international brand by bringing renowned artists—from Yo-Yo Ma to Paquito D’Rivera, from Plácido Domingo to Philip Glass—into the lives of young musicians and diverse audiences.
Free and open auditions are held annually via YouTube,
removing the cost of international postage, to ensure that any deserving and eligible musician can apply. Following adjudication by prestigious Faculty, all musicians in the new orchestra participate on full-scholarship, to achieve the greatest equality and diversity possible.
The season centerpiece is a July-August Residence and Concert
Tour held each year in different regions of the world. Musicians, Faculty, Conductors, and Guest Artists gather for a 2-week Residence of daily full-orchestra and sectional rehearsals to prepare diverse and challenging repertoire to take on a month-long Tour.
YOA has performed more than 270 concerts since its
2002 Inaugural Tour in settings that range from the most famous concert halls of Europe and the Americas to outdoor venues not often associated with symphonic music. YOA has reached millions through live performances, television and radio broadcasts, CD recordings, print media, and documentary films.
The Global Leaders Program is a tuition-free year-long
fellowship combining on-site leadership experience in diverse international settings with remote classroom training. By creating a platform for the most exceptional candidates from each graduating class to gain access to unique leadership training, YOA is empowering the next generation of social entrepreneurs.
The impact of YOA stretches far beyond its programs.
Participants return to their native countries to share experiences and gained knowledge with their communities. YOA connects musicians to institutions of higher learning and professional job opportunities. YOA was the model for music education startups in Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Panamá, Saint Lucia, the United States, and Uruguay.

Dear Friends,
2012 was an important milestone for YOA. We celebrated 10 years since our first Tour and returned
to Chile once more. We extended our presence to Asia with an expansive Tour in China and
supported important artistic and educational initiatives throughout Europe and the Americas. In
2012 we inaugurated 35 new YOA Global Leaders into our in-depth leadership and community
development.
YOA succeeds because of talented and passionate musicians. We thank the orchestra, faculty, and
guest artists for their energy and commitment to personal excellence and higher artistic achievement
under the inspiring leadership of our talented Music Director, Carlos Miguel Prieto. All of these
efforts are supported by the dedication and creativity of our management team.
With a successful 2012 season and 10th Anniversary behind us, we look forward to more challenges
and opportunities, which we will continue to meet with passion and integrity. Importantly, we need
to be proactive in trying to secure YOA’s future by concentrating on three goals:
Community Engagement – YOA must continue to redefine a new role for the symphony orchestra at the
heart of deserving communities.
Fiscal Stability – it is essential for a non-profit organization to balance its budget while still securing
sufficient resources for creative boundaries and educational initiatives. This objective requires a continuous
expansion of our donor base beyond those who have been sustaining YOA for the past 10 years.
Developing the YOA brand – a strong brand helps constituents understand a purpose
that’s deeper and longer-lived than any specific project. YOA must communicate
on an emotional and intellectual level, engendering loyalty, creating
advocates, and inspiring ambassadors. These goals will allow YOA to
resonate with new supporters who are faced with fewer philanthropic
dollars to distribute.
Thank you all for your generous support and encouragement.
Sincerely,
Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg

It is clear that this year has been full of remarkable milestones, all
set in contrast against the challenging local and global economies.
At the end of 2011 we decided to focus on two major annual
projects with strategic significance and relevance to our mission,
while continuing our commitment to community engagement. In
addition, we resolved to focus more on supporting the remarkable
and innovative national projects of our musicians and partner
organizations in the Western Hemisphere.
All of our projects in 2012 reflect this focus, including an extensive
Tour of China and a national Tour of Chile.
We also followed through on our commitment to concentrate on
community engagement by supporting Alumni-led projects and
developing extensive interaction with local youth orchestras
throughout our Tour of Chile. The Global Leaders Program, a
pioneering concept that has grown out of this new focus on
education initiatives, promises to expand in the coming year into a
strong and unique platform to empower our musicians to become
the next generation of social entrepreneurs.
YOA has long been skillful in managing a lean and efficient
financial structure. However, the persistent economic headwinds
have intensified and we must rethink the model to ensure that our
expenses do not exceed our contributions.
Here is the bright spot: we have seen this issue developing, and
we’re ready to face it head-on by instituting an organization-wide
strategic plan that charts a bold path forward – allowing YOA to
balance great artistry, service to the community, and financial
viability.
The principles of this plan are threefold: 1) grow our community
connections throughout the Western Hemisphere; 2) heighten our
artistry and world-wide presence; and 3) secure a financially
sustainable foundation.
Achieving these goals will require tenacity, but challenging times
bring about our best work. YOA intends to demonstrate that it is
possible for an orchestra to offer exceptional artistic and
educational experiences, connect with its communities and still
operate in a fiscally sustainable manner. We need to do this so that
our next generation of musicians and listeners can experience the
YOA in all its splendor for decades to come.

2012 was marked by a sense of purpose that transcended all activities.
Each project undertaken by the orchestra was conceived with the
belief that building an orchestra and building a community go hand-in
-hand. A local needs-based approach to project planning enabled the
orchestra’s impact to be both international and local. The orchestra’s
activities exposed audiences, local participants, and collaborators to an
international educational exchange of the highest caliber, while
drawing attention to the region’s cultural institutions and programs.
The 2012 season solidified the orchestra’s position as much more than
an exceptional forum for artistic growth, but a springboard for
leadership training, empowering participants to play more vital roles
in the world around them.
YOA continued to establish itself as a connection point between
cultural projects and cultural leaders throughout the Americas—
helping to found national and regional initiatives in the Dominican
Republic, Honduras, and elsewhere—while continuing to foster
upstart projects in México, Haiti, Uruguay, Panamá, Colombia, and
beyond.
2012 was a year in which YOA carried its message beyond the
Americas to global audiences. A month-long Tour of China signaled
the power of YOA as a voice for our continent and its resounding
message of social transformation through symphonic training.
YOA’s Chile Tour defined the season. This project exemplified the
synergy of public-private partnerships, united through the common
objective of stimulating communities and improving lives. The
poignant experiences of this Tour—big and small—are unforgettable:
from hand-written thank you notes by young students in Coquimbo to
the roar of 3,500 voices in La Serena’s El Coliseo; from the surging
energy of Shostakovich's 5th Symphony at Teatro Las Condes to the
heartfelt cheers of pride for YOA’s Chilean musicians at the
community theater in Nuñoa; from the enthusiasm of participants in
YOA’s master-classes at the Temuco Conservatory to a day spent
sharing music from across the Americas with orphans in Puerto Varas.
Beyond the individual lives and communities invigorated through this
Tour, the long-term contribution and legacy of this project transcend
the cultural sector.
Being part of this movement makes the time, dedication, and effort
that went into 2012 more deeply rewarding and satisfying than words
can express for all involved.

Program Highlights
YOA made its Asia debut with a four-week Residence & Concert Tour. 75
musicians from 17 countries of the Americas traveled to China to perform 12
concerts in the biggest metropolitan centers as well as cites not often visited
by symphony orchestras. Between 13 December 2011 and 2 January 2012,
YOA had a Residence in Chongqing followed by a concert tour to diverse
settings ranging from the northern port of Dalian to the western city of
Lanzhou on the edge of the Gobi desert. The orchestra journeyed to the
modern commercial center of Shenzhen and to Xi’an, one of China’s oldest
cities. YOA also performed in the great urban centers of Beijing, Shanghai,
and Guangzhou.
The China Tour was a true partnership that united key musical institutions
from across the Americas. YOA Partner organizations sent musicians to
participate in this tour, including Consejo Nacional de la Cultura (Chile), New England Conservatory—YOA Founding Institution
(Massachusetts), Nucleos Estaduais de Orquestras Juvenis e Infantis—Neojiba (Bahia, Brazil), Orchesta Juvenil Municipal de Guatemala
(Guatemala), Orquesta Sinfonica Universidad Guanajuato (México), New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (Canada), and Escola de Musica Eleazar
de Carvalho—ASSATEMEC (Itu, Brazil).
Residence in La Serena | 29 June—10 July
Joining 70 YOA musicians from across the Americas, 15 young Chilean
musicians represented the country’s regional youth orchestras. The two-week
Residence, led by Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto and YOA Faculty, was
hosted by Universidad de la Serena and the Intendencia de Coquimbo.
Community Leadership
The Chile Tour included free concerts for communities, open rehearsals to the
public, and musical exchanges with local conservatories. During the
Residence, YOA musicians had the opportunity to serve as coaches and gain
experience as they oversaw 10 days of sectionals and full orchestra rehearsals
of the Youth Orchestra “Jorge Peña Hen” of La Serena. Hands-on instruction
by YOA musicians and conductors Hugo Dominguez, Benjamin Zander, and
Felipe Hidalgo culminated with a 10 July concert showcasing their work.
11-Concert Tour | 10—28 July
YOA toured across the country through La Serena, Valparaíso, Santiago,
Talca, Concepción, and Frutillar, presenting concerts in Chile’s major concert
halls—Teatro Municipal de Las Condes (Santiago), Aula Magna de la
Universidad Federico Santa Maria (Valparaíso), and Teatro del Lago
(Frutillar)—as well as free community concerts in non-traditional venues. At
the conclusion of the Tour, the orchestra was in Residence for five days in a
southern lakeside resort in Frutillar hosted by Corporación Cultural Teatro
del Lago.

In celebration of YOA’s 10th Anniversary, the Global Leaders Program was
launched in 2012 as a year-long leadership training fellowship offered to the
most exceptional graduates of the orchestra. The program combines unique on-
site professional experience in diverse international settings with remote
classroom training led by a faculty of pioneers in the field of social
development through music. The program seeks to foster the skills needed to
guide successful community-based music programs where participants act
simultaneously as entrepreneurs, mentors, teachers, advocates, performers,
administrators, and fundraisers. By exposing our musicians to a variety of
models in different cultural contexts, the Global Leaders Program builds a
distinctive and comprehensive understanding of what it takes to lead the social
music initiatives of tomorrow.

Juan Antonio Orrego Salas is one of Chile’s most important musical icons and among the most widely known
Latin American composers of our time. Orrego Salas studied with Randall Thompson and Aaron Copland in
the United States, and later he settled in that country in the early 1960s to work at Indiana University, where
he co-founded the Latin American Music Center.
An exciting and insightful communicator renowned for his charismatic presence on the conductor’s podium
and his versatile command of various composers and styles, Carlos Miguel Prieto is considered one of the
most dynamic young conductors on the classical stage today. Currently music director of the Orquesta Sinfóni-
ca Nacional de México and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería in his native México, and the Louisiana Philhar-
monic Orchestra in the United States, Maestro Prieto is also in high demand as a guest conductor.
Carlos Miguel Prieto
A leading interpreter of Mahler and Beethoven, Benjamin Zander is known for his charisma and unyielding
energy and for his brilliant pre-concert talks. Since 1979, Benjamin Zander has been the conductor of the Bos-
ton Philharmonic. He is known around the world as both a guest conductor and a speaker on leadership. He
uses music to help people open their minds and create joyful harmonies that bring out the best in themselves
and their colleagues.

José Serebrier José Serebrier (Conductor), a GRAMMY-winning conductor and composer, is one of the most recorded classi-
cal artists in history. He has received thirty-nine GRAMMY nominations in recent years, winning the LATIN
GRAMMY for Best Recording of the Year. All his recent recordings have received multiple GRAMMY nomina-
tions. Former Associate Conductor of Leopold Stokowski American Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall,
Composer in Residence of the Cleveland Orchestra, and Founder and Artistic Director of Festival Miami, Sere-
brier has conducted most of the world’s major orchestras. He has made international tours with the Juilliard
Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish Chamber
Orchestra, Toulouse Chamber Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Spain and others.

18-year-old Canadian violin prodigy Timothy Chooi has won numerous prizes including the Grand Prize in
the 2010 Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal Standard Life Competition. He is presently studying at the
Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. In 2010, Timothy was a Prize Winner at the Yehudi Menuhin International
Violin Competition (Senior Division) in Oslo, Norway. He has also won First Prize at the Canadian Music
Competition, Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival (two time gold medalist), and the BC National Festival
of the Arts.
Sarah Chang is recognized as one of the world’s great violinists. Since her debut with the New York Philhar-
monic at the age of 8, she has performed with the greatest orchestras, conductors and accompanists interna-
tionally in a career spanning more than two decades. In 2012, she will have recorded exclusively for EMI Clas-
sics for 20 years.
French-Canadian pianist Louis Lortie has attracted critical acclaim throughout Europe, Asia, and the United
States, not least for extending his interpretative voice across a broad repertoire range rather than choosing to
specialize in one particular style. The London Times, describing his playing as “ever immaculate, ever imagina-
tive,” has identified the artist’s “combination of total spontaneity and meditated ripeness that only great pia-
nists have.”

Carole Farley Carole Farley (Soprano - United States), a GRAMMY-nominated vocalist, made her Metropolitan Opera debut
at age 19 in the title role of Lulu (the Met’s first production). Farley returned to the Met for the title role in
Lady Macbeth of Mtsensek by Shostakovich, the only non-Russian in the cast. A regular guest of the world’s
opera houses, she has performed at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Canadian Opera, New York City Opera,
Welsh National Opera, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and in Zürich, Paris, Torino, Lyon, Brussels, and Flor-
ence, among many others.
