Global Leaders Program A scholarship-based professional training and leadership course offered annually to the most exceptional graduates of YOA
In celebration of YOA’s 10th Anniversary, the Global Leaders Program was launched in 2012 as a year-long leadership training
fellowship offered to the most exceptional graduates of the orchestra. The program combines unique on-site professional
experience in diverse international settings with remote classroom training led by a faculty of pioneers in the field of social
development through music. The program seeks to foster the skills needed to guide successful community-based music programs
where participants act simultaneously as entrepreneurs, mentors, teachers, advocates, performers, administrators, and fundraisers.
By exposing our musicians to a variety of models in different cultural contexts, the Global Leaders Program builds a distinctive and
comprehensive understanding of what it takes to lead the social music initiatives of tomorrow.
Across the world, a rapidly expanding belief in the value of music education as a tool for transforming communities and improving
lives has led to the establishment of countless new programs at the national, regional, and municipal levels, formed with social
development as their principal objective. Through its vast international network of musicians and music programs across the
Americas, YOA has played a supporting role in the emergence of many of these new projects from Canada to Chile. Out of the
experience of helping to launch and guide social music programs in different settings, YOA understands first-hand the real need
that exists for young leaders capable of directing these initiatives. However, the diverse skills and experiences required to build and
sustain relevant social music programs are not taught in conservatory practice-rooms or in university lecture halls. By creating the
Global Leaders Program, YOA is helping to prepare a new generation of social entrepreneurs to use music to transform lives, while
ensuring that new social initiatives launched across the Americas will continue to exist and serve their communities through music
for generations to come.
